[Goanet] NEWS: Distilling a bit of Brazil: Cachaca in Goa... Jason Soares in NT
Distilling a bit of Brazil Published on: October 6, 2013 - 22:17 More in: Business and Commerce By Jason Soares | BC Cachaça is to Brazilians as Feni is to Goans. However, the Brazilians coming to Goa during next year’s Lusofonia Games will surely not miss sipping their favourite local spirit, for they can raise a toast to their winning teams with DesmondJi Pure Cane, the ‘desi’ version of the Cachaça. “We plan to offer our product to the Brazilians visiting Goa and hope to pleasantly surprise them,” says founder of Agave India, Desmond Nazareth, who is the brain behind the Pure Cane product that was launched in Goa earlier this year. What is interesting about DesmondJi’s Pure Cane is that it is made from freshly pressed 100 per cent pure sugarcane juice, using a specially selected species of sugarcane growing around the company’s site on the Deccan Plateau. The cane extracts are then fermented and double-distilled in Agave India’s small batch pot-stills to produce a smooth, clear spirit that belongs to the international family of sugarcane spirits, like Brazil’s famous artisanal Cachaça and Rhum Agricole from the French West Indies. Surprisingly India, one of the world’s oldest and largest growers of sugarcane, was until now, not known for producing high-end sugarcane spirits, except perhaps in some unregulated ‘country liquor’ form. “We are making an artisanal spirit which has a completely natural flavour and odour, capturing it from freshly harvested cane and preserving it in our packaged designer bottles. We manufacture the Cachaça-style spirit, using processes and equipment similar to Brazilians, at a very affordable local price, while maintaining international quality,” explains the IITM techie turned spirit connoisseur. DJ Pure Cane is currently available only in premium retail stores in Goa, but will be launched in other markets like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Daman and Puducherry from November – December onwards. “Goa is a great test and ‘fan-out’ market for DesmondJi products. People taste our products here and often take them home. We have been working on our Pure Cane product for the past five years,” Nazareth highlights. The Pure Cane represents a brand extension for the company in distilled spirits, says Nazareth. “In Agave India, we focus on creating liqueurs, spirits and easy-to-use alcoholic cocktail blends. We are planning to launch a few more products in the market, starting as always with home-base Goa. One of these is a charred oak finished spirit, to give the spirit unique sensory characteristics.” Agave India currently has production facilities in Andhra Pradesh and Goa. The agro-facility and micro-distillery arm of the operation is located at a 44-acre plot in the Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, while the bottling and packaging unit is located in South Goa. “We are targeting urban middle-class consumers, so we focussed more on making the ingredients of home-based party shots and cocktails, including those much enjoyed by the under-served women’s niche market. The DesmondJi brand has seven products in our current portfolio, which can be used to make several of the world’s most famous cocktails, including the ‘Cosmopolitan’. In just over two years, the DesmondJi brand has already made a significant national and even international impact. Interestingly, it attracted the attention of a famous but reclusive liquor baron, Switzerland-based Martin Grassl, who sources and markets super-premium spirits around the world under his own ‘Porfidio’ brand. Grassl tasted DJ 100 per cent agave abroad, and highly intrigued by the DesmondJi brand story, even visited Nazareth in Goa about a few months ago, to share experiences. “It’s been 13 years since I had the original concept for the products. We are now a guerrilla alcobev company, with an outsize brand that is up against powerful and deep-pocketed international companies and brands. DesmondJi’s popularity has spread mainly through consumer driven word-of-mouth, because of our affordability and quality vis-à-vis imported competitors,”says Nazareth as he signs off http://www.navhindtimes.in/business-and-commerce/distilling-bit-brazil

Arun Pandey, director, ARZ (Anyay Rahit Zindagi), which was conceived in 1997 and is committed to combating trafficking for sexual abuse and commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) in Goa, says that the mujra performance at a hotel on August 27 by six girls coming from places as far off as Delhi, Ghaziabad, towns in Punjab and Jharkhand/Chattisgarh, is a new trend. Reams are written, poems are composed, lavish praise is rained down on one of Goa’s remaining traditional vignettes. However, no one is willing to put their money where the mouth is. Least of all the government, whose promised subsidy scheme that was launched on June 24 this year by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, has been mere lip service. That means no beer cans, coke cans and broken bottles either. You get instead handsome looking Sedan-driving Malayali couples in their mid-40’s max two kids in tow, no tantrums either, with a sprinkling of Tamilians, equally well behaved, cash to spend and all things nice. He had been living in Goa for the past six months and intended to start his own restaurant. The building he stayed in was taken on lease. The Goa Police true to form did not reveal his name, their excuse being that it would help their investigation further notwithstanding the fact they had gladly announced his arrest to the media. The words we believe they used were “because of the sensitivity of the case”. There is more than one thing that is true to form in this; the man’s age for one, that he is a north Indian, that he was arrested in Anjuna, and that he wanted to set up a restaurant in Goa. [Goanet] Restriction on Judokas revoked, Trials now in all categories
Restriction on Judokas revoked, Trials now in all categories Judokas hold heated protest; Court verdict expected today sports@ herald- goa. com PANJIM: The Goa Judo Association today revoked the ` suspension’ on the 14 judokas besides deciding to postpone the selection trials to a further date, after engaging in a heated verbal discussion with protesting judokas at the indoor stadium, Campal. The decision was announced by a member of the Judo Association Sudesh Pivrekar in the presence of the Association secretary Siddeshwar Naik, SAG coaches and parents of the athletes including members of the Right To Information forum, who were there in support. The 14 judokas, some of who are believed to be medal winners for the State of Goa, today unitedly protested against the unjust manner of the Association in restricting the judokas from participating in the Lusofonia Games. According to information furnished this evening to the Herald, it is learnt that tempers rose at the Indoor stadium, where the judokas were protesting against the arbitrary decision of the Goa Judo Association to suspend the 14 Judokas, who had filed a petition in the High Court pertaining to the selection process for the Lusofonia Games. They also opposed the Association's decision not to conduct selection trials in some categories. SAG coach Deepak Netardikar confirmed that it was announced by the Association to revoke the restriction on the judokas and postpone the selections trials to a further date. Another decision also taken by the Association is that the trails would be held in all the categories. Judo association secretary Siddeshwar Naik revealed that the judokas had protested in a very disturbing and un- sportsmanship manner with banging and jumping on tables and that he would be reporting the unruly and high- handedly behaviour of the judokas to the Association Executive Committee. Gurudatta Bhakta, President of the Goa Judo Association categorically clarified that there was no ban on any judokas and that only 6 junior players were restricted from the selection trails pending the decision of the court case. “ We now have however decided to revoke the restriction pending the verdict of the High Court.” “ The juniors, whose performance are much below par, want to compete in the Lusofonia Games along with the seniors,” pointed out Bhakta, who preferred not to speak much on the issue, the matter being sub- judice. The High Court in all probability will be delivering its verdict tomorrow , September 7th, on the case petitioned by the aggrieved judokas. [Goanet] Systems of distributing PORTFOLIOS.
The brouhaha about the impending re-distribution of ministerial portfolios has taken some space in today's Navhind Times and OHeraldo, but has been rightly given a wide berth by Times of India [Goa] and the Gomantak times as insignificant news to be published. The Goa Su-Raj Party commends the respective managements of these two newspapers for considering the re-distribution of portfolios being the internal matter of the Government that does not warrant any wide publicity, but only to make them aware about the infighting for the plum portfolios. Goans can see the how ministers are clamoring for those portfolios which will be beneficial for them to expand their vote-banks, ensuring their win at the next hosting with headlines like these: NT- 3 Ministers expected to lose major portfolios in reshuffle. H - Ministers eyeing plum portfolios? Contrast the above system of dishing out goodies, making the CM as the whole and sole Majordomo in the field to pat his favorites on their backs and sock those who he likes not in their noses, with the system designed by GSRP: The distribution of portfolios [all] will be one of the secondary tasks in the Party Convention [after the election results are declared] which convention will select the CM as well as the Cabinet of 5 in one go and also distribute all, repeat all, portfolios to the 5 member cabinet at the outset, giving just one week's time for portfolios to be interchanged between ministers if they so want before sealing the portfolio charts for the next five years, where the Ministers may change but their portfolios will not. At the Convention: Electoral College will be the composed of the Party Executives, Constituency Working Committee delegates [2 for each constituency] plus 10 rank outsiders possibly but erudite personages of Goa, irrespective of their party affiliations. Elected representative only sell themselves to the electoral college but cannot choose themselves any positions. Portfolios will come as a matter of collective choice thro' selection of a chart of portfolios on offer i.e. 5 charts where portfolios are evenly distributed. All elected representatives may contest but only 9 will be short listed by the electoral college in the first ballot. The second ballot will select 5 out of 9. The highest scorer in votes in the second ballot is the CM, the rest 4 being the minister's in the 5 member cabinet. CM's chart of portfolios will have 'Finance' and 'Home' and this chart will be handed over to the CM elect by the chairperson of the convention. CM elect will then take the chair and call on the next highest voted minister to choose from the remaining 4 charts until the last is taken by the 5th member of the cabinet. One week will be given for ministers to swap the portfolios among themselves before they are sealed and published. End of the story. Let the Goan public decide if this is what it should be. GSRP considers every one of it's contesting candidates as CM category candidates. Cheers floriano goasuraj PPS: PEOPLE FOR POLITICAL SANITY PS: If the people refuse to become politically 'SANE', politics will remain dirty + more. I think it is in the Almada suburb, alem da Ponte 'Salazar'. My notion of its exact topographical location is a bit hazy, because when I accompanied his brother, Dr Norberto, D. Flavia, to honor Adeodato's memory, it was after they had feasted me most opulently copiously. My neighbour, of whom I have heard great legends, from his legion Lotlicar contemporaries, would have granted me full marks for the mood I was in Alfred de Tavares, Stockholm, Sweden. BTW: Dr Agostinho, the opthalmologist, known to sundry Goa, featuring the ubiquituos dois poixe philatelic Estado da India stamp over many years, does have a memorial in Lisbon; as well the Avenida Gama Pinto?
[Goanet] Maulinguem gripped by tension
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM: Tension prevailed in Maulinguem village on the state's border with Maharashtra, as a discussion over a property matter sparked off heated arguments between the stakeholders. The heirs of the local landlord, late Babasaheb Rane, had called some villagers from a ward for discussion to settle a property dispute. When villagers from the other four wards learnt about it, they thought they may be left out and converged at the scene. Nearly 175 villagers gathered and demanded that the matter be sorted in a transparent manner. A police team led by Bicholim PSI Tukaram Walke rushed to the scene. The trouble started after the heirs to the property started selling plots in the disputed property. Locals claim they have a stake in the property while the heirs say they inherited the property from Rane. A special meeting deal with this issue has been called on Sunday at 10am at Maulinguem.(ToI)

- Original Message - From: floriano lobo To: edi...@herald-goa.com Sent: Monday, October 07, 2013 11:13 PM Subject: Re: MGP reiterating demand for Marathi as Goa's Official Language - Press note for kind favour of publication OHeraldO - October 6, 2013 - MGP REITERATES MARATHI DEMAND [Pg 3] The Goa Su-Raj Party is not surprised by the renewed demands made by MGP that Marathi be given the Official status in Goa. MGP will have nothing important to say than this rubbish as long as this sorry Party's name remains Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. Goans must note that those who are demanding Official Status for Marathi in Goa are asli MAHARASTRIAN masquerading as GOANS. Goans must remember that the KULDEV of these Maharashtrians reside not in Goa but in the heartland of Maharahtra. The Goa Su-Raj Party's official agenda is to amend the Language Act, 1987 to remove (1) The Konkani Script shall be in DEVANAGRI, and (2) Marathi shall also be used for all official purposes. GSRP will see to it that the pipe dream of Maharastrians in Goa shall never ever be realized. This is the promise that GSRP has made to GOANS when it was born 13 long years ago and will see to it that this promise is fulfilled totally and completely. If Official status for Marathi is sought by Maharashtrians in Goa, then let them confer the Official status for Konkani in Maharashtra. Goans shall then have no qualms to accept Marathi in Goa under these terms. Period. for Goa Su-Raj Party - GSRP Sd/- Floriano Lobo Gen. [Goanet] Goanet Reader: Coconut and Goan Pyramid Jaggery (Shamika Andrade)
Goan Girl on all things Goan on Coconut and Goan Pyramid Jaggery Shamika Andrade shamikaandr...@gmail.com It was August 15, 2013. I still remember the date. My sister and her kids had just arrived for their summer break. India commemorated 66 years of Independence and the Catholic Church celebrated the feast of our Lady of Assumption. At home, after early morning mass and a multicultural flag hoisting event, we rejoiced like every other veritable Goan family by making patolleos (pronounced pathayo). If you are Goan and you are reading this, then I'm sure your eyes are glowing, your tummy rumbling and your mouth salivating by now. So for our annual patolleo-making ceremony this year, ladies of all shapes, sizes and age groups gathered around the dining table. This included my niece who is six years old to her Pontimai who is 86. You see, we had a very important mission at task... Goan rice was soaked overnight and then ground into a fine paste with a pinch of salt. It then had to be flattened onto turmeric leaves and filled with juicy freshly scraped coconuts and copious amounts of Goan jaggery. And then, this divine creation is steamed. At this time, the men of my family of all shapes, sizes and age groups, captivated by the aromas finally venture into the kitchen. You can add cardamom if you choose. We choose not to as we like the raw taste of the Goanness -- Goan rice, Goan jaggery and even coconuts from our trees in Goa. Substitute the jaggery and the rice for anything non Goan and it's just not the same. It was a good day. That's all I remember. We all sat by the table and laughed and talked as we filled ourselves with fresh coconut and Goan jaggery caressed by rice, embraced by turmeric leaves and steamed with love... August came and went. So fast, just like this year. So one rainy day in September when the clouds were grey and heavy and the sky looked like it was going to fall, I decided to surprise my grandparents with alle belle for tea. Ah ha! Does the word alle belle make you hungry too? Delicious, soft, melt-in-the-mouth... this sweet Goan pancake is a favourite in most Goan households. It is a favourite at mine. The only tip I can give you is to get the pancake real thin and fine, just like a dainty lace handkerchief. The type of handkerchief a pretty damsel would drop by mistake, so that a handsome prince picks it for her and sniffs it for its perfume. I digress, for cooking makes me creative and happy. Or is it happy and creative Like patolleos, alle belle uses freshly scraped coconut and Goan jaggery. You could even stuff the pancakes with coconut and a squeeze of lime and a sprinkle of sugar. If you ask me my preference, coconut jaggery alle belle wins hands down. And since October has only just begun, I decided to make vhonn. semi-solid, smooth, creamy and velvety, Vhonn is almost like a traditional Goan rice kheer. But do you know something? I'm out of Goan pyramid jaggery. Now the thing is, I don't live in Goa. The shops here don't sell Goan pyramid jaggery And I refuse to use an other jaggery. Definately not Manglorean jaggery! Just not the same. Never the same! Viva Goa, Until my next, Yours truly, Goan Girl
