That's precisely my point.

This is not about the "sins" of Jeffrey Archer, but the manner in
which he got the support from the entire Establishment, including at
the time of Maggie Thatcher, and in fields other than politics.

Yet, when it comes to judging the former home of the expats "people
defecating in public" becomes the issue,

questioning the yardsticks for conjuring Paradise.

[Goanet] Independence Day Special - My best 10 patriotic songs

2018-08-15 Thread Sandeep Heble
Independence Day Special - My best 10 patriotic songs

Music is considered as nature’s gift and listening to good music is a
privilege. It is a not only a source of good entertainment but a medium
which can takes you into a different kind of plane altogether. If the
poetry, composition, and rendition are good, you are magically taken
straight into a seventh heaven. Music soothes you, puts you at peace and
gets you into a kind of a hypnotic trance. Indeed, what would life be
without music!

There’s nothing like good music to get your day moving. The songs which you
tend to play depend on the kind of mood that you are in or would like to be
in. On days of National importance like the Independence Day or the
Republic Day, one often gets into the mood of playing out patriotic tracks.
Now, with channels like whatsapp, Facebook and Youtube, many share songs
and videos with ease. Today, on the occasion of Independence Day, I must
have received loads of music videos and tracks from friends to put me in a
good patriotic mood and fervour. That's good. I’m not complaining.

I have always been fond of good songs and have grown up listening to good
patriotic songs on patriotic days. Who hasn't? I presume, and am pretty
sure, that many must have done the same.Over the years, there have been
many good songs which have been composed and have created a lasting
impression. Everyone will have their own list of favourites to play. I have
mine as well. Here, I will make an attempt to choose my ten best.

1. Nanha munna rahi hoon – An excellent track which always used to play on
Doordarshan during my school days. Beautifully composed by Naushad with
lyrics penned by Shakeel Badayuni, this was a song for the children which
became hugely popular. It was sung by Shanti Mathur. The image of a small
boy hopping, marching and humming this song on the empty streets along with
his pet dog still comes to mind. Not many from the previous era can ever
forget this.

2. Vande Mataram – Bankim Chandra’s song has various versions. The earliest
one which featured was in a 1952 feature Film, Anadmath. There was one
version sung by Hemant Kumar and another one sung by India’s nightingale,
Lata Mangeshkar. Lata’s rendition stands out. Later, A.R. Rahman came out
with “Maa Tujhe Salaam”, a modernised version of the song in his album
which became a kind of an anthem for the youth.

3. Bharat humko jaan se pyara hai – Roja was a beautiful film on National
integration. It won three national awards and gained International fame
also. The Director, Mani Ratnam, and A.R. Rahman, who composed its music,
became National icons. Roja had some of the most amazing music. Among one
such tracks is “Bharat humko jaan se pyara hai”, in the soulful voice of
Hariharan.

4. Jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiya karti hai basera – Mohammad Rafi had
the ability to sing any kind of song and give it that extra special touch.
Be it, romantic or quawwali, emotional or masti, classical or patriotic, in
the Hindi Film Industry there would be none better than the maestro to sing
even difficult songs with extreme ease. Listen to the opening lines of the
song and you’ll know what I mean. 53 years after it was composed, this song
is still hummed and remembered.

5. Jana Gana Mana – The Jana Gana Mana video sung by over 35 top Indian
artists is probably one which has been shared the most. Bharat Bala and
A.R. Rahman came together to create this historic album in 2000 which we
have been listening to ever since. Many of India’s greatest musicians have
contributed to this video. If you haven’t heard this one yet, then you have
missed quite a lot. Catch it on Youtube and experience the musical charm it
has on offer. You will be amazed.

6. Yeh jo desh hai tera – Once again, who else but Rahman. From the movie
“Swades”, which starred Bollywood Superstar Sharukh Khan in an offbeat
role, this song has been sung by the genius Rahman himself. The Shehnai
instrument has been used in the song to great effect which makes it even
more special.

7. Sagara Pran Talmalala – It is a Marathi patriotic song penned by Vinayak
Veer Sawarkar, composed by Hridaynath and sung by Lata. While Savarkar’s
politics may be questioned, the literary genius that he was will never be.
Savarkar is said to have composed and written various poems on prison walls
with charcoal and chalk while he was in Cellular jail. This one will really
touch your heart and make you dream about your beautiful motherland.

8. Aao Baccho tumhe dikhayen jhanki Hindustan ki– Another of the songs
which used to play ever so often on Doordarshan. This song is from the
movie Jagriti, a very old but hugely successful films from the 50s. The
movie features some classic patriotic tracks. Kavi Pradeep was an extremely
famous lyricist who is popularly known for writing the lyrics of “Ae mere
watan ke logon”. He has written as well as sung this song which is set to a
simple and yet beautiful tune and music by Hemant Kumar.

9. Jis desh mein ganga

When will these teeming multitudes of Indians see the twilight ray of
fulfillment in their lives?, 72 years are long enough in the life span of
lucky Indians, who may be b fortunate enough to survive the ordeals of
life. The celbrations will speak eloquently of measures adopted to
ameliorate their sufferings, but these speech diets every year after year
do not fill empty stomachs on an Independent day .The progress has not
touched many living a bonded life of ignorance, and deprivity .They are out
of heath services, education, housing, M Ghandhi said that unless the
benefits reach the poorest of poor. of Indians, it is no progress and
development. Much has been done, but much remains to be done, and quickly.
There are islands of development, scientific advancement of going to moon
and mars and beyond. But down here on earth the poor are crying for basic
needs, The politicians turn millionars and billionars every year, Their
concern is lips service, more prominent during elections and they then go
into hibernation till next elections. They overlook and even may be hand iin
gloves of enriching themselves from the fat of the poor, denying them what
is legeitimately their dues and meant for them. Imagine the cattle are even
depriived of fodder, that is the level the politicians dare to stoop with
impunity. The schemes of poverty aleviation do not react, the marginalised ,
inspite of addhhar card security. The advantages meant for the poor,
illiterate are devoured by well to do.The NGO,s other welfare organisations
do their bit to reach them, but are often accused, denigrated with motives
of selfishness
Every Govt that is propelled to power uses the same cliches WELFARE of
masses.Govt of the poor , by poor for poor. These slogans continue and will
continue for anther 100 years. The illiterate are not able to demanfd their
rights and if they do individually or collectively they are beaten to pulp
by various subbtle ways of silencing them
Yes India has come a long way ,since the British left us orphaned and
broken in every sense .But it does not augur well for Indians to live on
laurels of present glory alone in comparison of the past. Housing for poor,
food for the hungry, clothing for the naked, work for the able, education
for all and right to live with dignity and honour as humans, as different
from cattle class must get priority and monitored at evry step of
implementation. Porosity of resources on the way dissipates the well
indtended benefits that must filter down at all times and under all
circumstances
Only when the last of the marginalised Indian is free from ignorance and
economic deprivation to live in dignity like a human, will Independence
become meaningful ,joyous celbrations in which every Indian will proudly
raise his head
Everyone int their position can act to make this reality in their own way
.Putting he onus on Govt alone will no do.Be a vigilant Indian to demand
Govt with resources to act responsibly and be made accountable
That day,a 15 August ? will be the happy Independence day
for all Indians yet to born

[Goanet] Can India's Patriotism Be Built on Accepting Differences? (Rudolf C Heredia, EPW)

2018-08-15 Thread Goanet Reader
Can India's Patriotism Be Built on Accepting Differences?

Rudolf C Heredia
Rudolf C Heredia (rudihere...@gmail.com) is at the Indian
Social Institute, New Delhi.
Vol. 53, Issue No. 29, 21 Jul 2018

There are many avatars of
nationalism premised on very
different understandings of
"the idea of India." This
demands a patriotism premised
on an inclusive love of all our
peoples, a commitment to their
integral welfare, and faith in
an idea of India with its
multicultural, pluri-religious
society as less a nation state
than a multi-nation-state in
the making. The jury is still
out on whether this will be a
failed experiment or a
prophetic sign of the future
for a world still struggling to
cope with diversity, not quite
able to accept the different
"other" and the legitimacy of
the difference.

There is an obvious contradiction between nationalism and
internationalism, and yet they prevail together: national
chauvinism at home and international globalism abroad. Any
response to such anomalies, particularly in a rapidly
changing situation, must be critically assessed lest we pour
new wine that cannot be contained in "old wine skins" and so
burst the skins and spill the wine.

Some Issues and Clarifications

Nationalism and patriotism: Nationalism as devotion
to one's country easily becomes exclusive: my
country first, right or wrong. When national
interests clash with those of others, nationalism
inevitably becomes antagonistic and hostile to
other countries and results in violence and war on
the world stage, rather than dialogue and
tolerance, leading to a compromise for the greater
common good and peace. Such a chauvinist
nationalism thrives on finding or creating national
enemies, whether without or within the country.
However, patriotism as a non-exclusive love of
one's country must be premised on self-confidence
and openness to other countries without fears and
suspicions. This is a far better and more
constructive basis for an inclusive society, both
  national and international, than jingoist
  exclusiveness.

An intensification of trade and finance, facilitated by media
and migration, results in an imploding globalising world. The
consequent rapid and radical change brings back uprooted
people who seek lost roots in localisation.

Political leaders often find it convenient, even
profitable to confuse nationalism and patriotism so
as to mobilise people on the basis of a politics of
hate, masquerading as nationalism, rather than
painstakingly cultivating patriotism as a love for
one's people that reaches out to other peoples as
well. Such patriotism is a far more viable basis
for a national community in pursuit of the common
good, rather than the social contract of Thomas
Hobbes (1985) which grounds our politics today in
the self-interest in individual or group, national
or international community. This is what plagues
communities in our country and nations at the
United Nations, despite so much pious rhetoric.

Imagining a nation: Nationalism is the ideology that drives
this process of nation-building: "Nationalism is not the
awakening of nations to self-consciousness; it invents
nations where they do not exist". (Gellner 1964: 169) It was
a powerful idea but one that imposed a uniformity (cultural,
religious, and economic) with a brutal aggression subsuming
lesser communities into the dominant one. The last century
has witnessed horrendous clashes of aggressive nationalisms
in Europe, engulfing the world in two great wars. However, we
have not as yet managed to exorcise such nationalisms from
our world.

Moreover, when religion is used to construct this national
identity, then religion is politicised into an "ideology" and
vice versa and nationalism is sacralised into a "religion" --
in other words, a nationalised religion and a sacred
nationalism. This entanglement of religion and politics
inevitably becomes explosive, as religion becomes
fundamentalist and exclusive; and politics becomes extremist
and violent. No religious tradition has been an exception to
such political manipulation, even those purported to be
tolerant and non-violent. Only the expression of the violence
varies.

When there are many imagined communities in a single polity,
we have the multi-nation state, very different and far more
problematic than the original European nation state.
Moreover, a pluri-religious, multicultural society demands a
correspondingly adequate ideological construct -- a pluralism
for a multicultural, pluri-religious multi-nation federal
state, not the nationalism of the unitary nation state. But
first, it must be a civil state before becoming political
one.

GOVERNMENT'S EASE OF LIVING INDEX
The government has ranked Indian major cities on a 100 point scale reportedly
on four parameters of governance, social, economic and physical infrastructures
and has stated Pune is the most livable city with Panaji at 90th position! I
was born, spent my school and beautiful college years in Poona. Today renamed
PUNE is an overcrowded noisy polluted city, generally smelling of garbage with
traffic and parking problems, pedestrians finding it difficult to walk safely,
pot holed roads, power failures/load shedding , flooding at the slightest
rains. Besides the well maintained army contonment which they are trying to
destroy, heritage buildings replaced by ugly buildings with flora gone and
crows/scavenger birds predominant, shanties/ beggars unoticed on streets. I
have stopped going on holidays to Pune where most of my family stays, because
it brings tears to my eyes to see what they have done to my beloved city. Many
people I know have run away from Pune to settle in Goa. This exercise I suppose
is good government propaganda for smart cities and I pray Panaji does not
follow suit into a concrete jungle. Ease of living for whom?

Economic indicators may have boomed after the handover, but the downside to the
China market is that local youth married or single today have to live with
their parents or in public housing because the rents and prices of flats are
exorbitant, some even live across the border because of costs . The rate of
unemployment is low, but the type of jobs are basically menial. The dwindling
of freedoms is another negative aspect, and  no one knows what is behind the
big deals.
Many locals claim that living standards were much better than before the
handover.

Roland,
Not surprised that Macau will end up as Qatar of the East.
It seems that whatever the Chinese touch turn to gold. The Portuguese must
be hiding their heads in shame.
Here is some more info on Macau:

[Goanet] Can non-resident Indians please shut up?

GL responds:
I see Tensing, you had to do some real research - dig-up a 2015 article to
support your perspective.  Yet you make a valid point.
However, specifically for Goanet, that is what we care about, quite a few
frequent posters are using the e-site and the rest of us as a forum to
dissipate their own internal stress.  The question critical writers need to ask
and answer is:  Is my post going to solve the problem or am I trying to
transpose my internal frustrations on others?
Most of us come to Goanet to enjoy and share positive thoughts and feelings;
and not read the same old - kere kere, however true false the account may be.
Enough of my kere kere!

[Goanet] Bebinca Hits Macau

2018-08-15 Thread Bernado Colaco
Bebinca was a damp squib, thank god. As for Macau overtaking Qatar in GDP
terms, depends a lot on the China tap (people coming in). Currently the
disparity is large. It is only the yanks who earn sums of money.

No deaths, no problem.
Money will solve a lot of other smaller problems.

Just read that Macau would overtake Qatar in GDP and per capita income.

If Goa Portuguesa was a nation than Ole Xac would be its Macau-resident China
ambassador.

ENTER IMRAM KHAN

New P.M of Pakistan has been sworn in . Whether it bodes well for India
time alone will tell, notwithstanding the invitation to  India. May be
cricket diplomacy like pink pong earlier may be attempted. His role as a
captain, bowler, batsman may provide the spark if resumed, Cricket is like
a emotional, passionate war of sorts between the neighbours ,substitute for
physical engagement  In the past too attempts have been made by all sides
for rapprochement without much  success

The people of Pakistan invest in democracy with a hope, expectations and
aspiration for change of order for better. The civilian Govts have suffered
the same disease of maneuvering by military establishment from behind. Ms
Bhuto blowing hot and cold was eliminated by design not by accident as it
appears to be. Musharaf too made news wearing a mask of peace and waging
the infamous Kargil war .The actions of Sharif alienated the establishment,
who tried to put a spork in is wheel of developing cordial relations The
war cries and bugles is favourite diet of military to keep in them in the
reckoning .No one dares to rub them on the wrong sides. Musharaf is in
exile with all his patriotic flavor having the taste of his own medicine he
administered to his predecessor Since the military establishment cannot
dislodge the democratic Govt by a coup, they embroil their unamenable
leaders in the cauldron of soup of economic offences Military coup will
lead to crippling economic sanctions that will not be to the advantage of
military bosses and that is why they thread a beaten path. Already winds of
allegations of corruption are blowing against the new incumbent, meant to
send a subtle warning. The civilian Govt is always check mated for trying
to pursue a liberal approach towards India and must receive tacit approval
of military establishment, hence the democratic Govt in Pakistan is
constantly under a strain to please the military. The military is pursuing
a low intensity war of terrorism bleeding India with non-state actors,
jihadi groups and terrorist training camps on its soil  with denial mode
as its strategy

The one solution that could reign in peace is the suggestion that LOC be
converted into International border. Both sides give up their hardened
stand to re occupy the positions held as present. Improvement of trade,
exchange of visitors person to person contact, stopping export of cross
border terrorism with military support and reigning in the jihadi groups
can at least bring about thaw in hostile relations The threat of nuclear
war is a bogey that will have consequences for warring groups with economic
disaster for already a ruined economy of Pakistan, The cold war bitterness
between Russia, China, USA for strategic foothold in the region is no more
the avowed purpose and Pakistan no more holds its cards The Afghanistan
issue is no more the bone of contention to give Pakistan  aid, which has
been misused

Imran Khan as the new P.M carries the weight on his shoulders .He has to
please the military establishment , not alienate the powerful Jihadi groups
nurtured and cultivated by military and fulfill the aspiration of people
who have put him in the sa

[Goanet] WHAT?S GOAN?

2018-08-15 Thread Bernado Colaco
Very easy to answer. Wear a casti, pudvem, tadop, suit and pent! So many
options, zaitem aha nespak.
BC

I used to tell my daughter: ?Always remember, you are a Goan?. I did not say ?a
Goan first? because I could not invent an order of priorities.

Her older son?s British school asked him to wear his national dress at a school
function. So his father bought him an Indian outfit for the occasion.

The little fellow asked his father: ?Is that Goan?? The father told him: ?Ask
your grandfather.?

I remain nonplussed; can anyone tell what?s 'Goan?

It's stiil few hours to go for the celebrations to begin marking India's 71
birthday for Indians in Canada. Yeah, at the stroke of midnight, India broke
free of its colonial yoke. No matter where some of us -- foreign citizens -
have attachment to the "old country.".
A remark by a Conservative MP just few days ago has again raised the issue of
whether Canada is losing its "core" identity through "radical multiculturalism"
promoted by the Liberal govt.
India is no exception under the present dispensation, calling for a Hindu
Rashtra.
Political tribes is a new race.

[Goanet] INDEPENDENCE DAY GREETINGS TO YOU

2018-08-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Let us today vow to work towards ensuring that in 2019 we will see a truly
Independent India. The Lok Sabha Elections next year will be our final
opportunity to politically trash the BJP and restore our country's Secular
outlook that the founding Fathers of the Constitution had so dedicatedly
toiled for. To restore democracy our India must wholeheartedly and
selflessly unite against the deviously Communal, Corrupt and very Divisive
BJP.

Over the last four years under Narendra Modi our great country has ebbed to
dire straits. Raj Bhavans have been converted into BJP dens for political
chicanery. The BJP has over these years trampled on even the Independence
of the Judiciary. And more importantly while eroding the autonomy of even
the Reserve Bank, Election Commission and the CBI, Narendra Modi and the
BJP have ruptured the very secular fabric of our great nation.
