[Goanet] GoaNet - a premier list. WHY??

2023-11-15 Thread Eddie D'Sa

High time for an African or Asian Pope to be elected.
But do we need one at all?
Let a bunch of African & Asian leaders make the decisions.
Keep the Euros out for a change.

Why is GoaNet a premier list? What has it achieved so far?
Better to abolish it.

Subject: [Goanet] Cancel The Pope & The UNO
The Pope wants to make changes but either he is opposed tooth and nail
at consultative time or a clique of cardinals and bishops with their own
agenda, ignore those changes when implementation time comes.
The UN is on a similar track. The majority of members vote to make the
Body perform in line with charter ideals to force peace in violent
situations, but a couple of countries veto common sense solutions,
imagining they are still in victory flush of the WWII era. Some even
have the temerity of making the UN do their bidding because they finance
it.

So why does the world need either of them?
As for Gilbert’s suggestion to send no-nonsense Suella Braverman to
Rwanda to set up a British Refugee Welcome Centre, I think she would be
more effective cleaning up the drug addicts and homeless who have taken
over many once-prosperous towns and cities in the US while Washington
unlimited funds to Israel and Ukraine.
The times they are a changing. Moody’s now rates the credit outlook for
the US for the first time as negative, mentioning it can no longer rely
on their Sovereign Currency strength to finance their bottomless expense
pit.

I happened to be looking at the output in GoaNet of 9th Nov 2023 and
was amazed to find a hotch potch of items displayed with no particular
order or apparent purpose.
Could a seasoned Goa Net writer like Fred Noronha kindly explain what
GoaNet or this concoction is all about?
What is "ccrtv" all about and is there some coherent program they are
calling attention to?

It reads like a lot of muddled nonsense to me; so could some kindly
person explain what is the message being communicated?

I'd be most grateful.

With all the horrors being inflicted by the Israelis on the
Palestinians, I find no mention of Palestine in GoaNet features.

Doesn't Palestine matter to GoaNet OR have I missed something?

I'd be most grateful for any illumination on the subject.

This english King with nothing better to do decides to leave boring
Britain & hop across to former colony KENYA.

What should he be doing there?
Mere verbal apologies in fancy prose won't do.
The king should initiate massive reparations to the Kenyans to make up
for the racist insults they had to suffer and the privileges the Brits
enjoyed during their Kenyan rule. Instead the king seems to be dishing
out silly medals and making meaningless speeches to the current Kenyans
to wipe out the memory of those evil colonial years, when the natives
were treated like dirt.

I am referring to the HRH visit to Kenya and the issue of colonial

British parliament and cabinet of both parties have quite a collection

Do they feel the pain? Do they know their recent history?
Are you reminding them about it.
Or are we in a "coma or virtually dead" about our recent history?

[Goanet] Saving India

2023-10-13 Thread Eddie D'Sa

This message is meant for Arundati Roy, one of the few hopes left to
save India.

I am writing this via Goanet because I don't know Arundati's email.
I'd be grateful if someone would kindly send her email to me.

It was wonderful to hear the views of Arundhati after the moronic
ramblings of that Guju font of wisdom called Narendra MODI now running
India.

I'd like to invite Arundati to devise a strategy to save India from
intellectual zeroes like of Modi to whom the height of discourse is
about whether to call India Bharat.

Re: [Goanet] INDIA OR BHARAT?

I heartily agree with Stephen that we should continue with the name
INDIA.

Trust these Modi led Gujus to focus on trivial issues like name changes.
Hindus remain culturally drenched in their many gods & meaningless
rituals and have no time for anything more intellectually challenging or
philosophical.

I'd like to suggest that a semi-literate Hindu like Modi be kicked out
from the governing hierarchy and be replaced by a true intellectual,
preferably Christian or Muslim to deal with the more serious national &
international issues

so that India is able to earn more respect and attention.

[Goanet] Pope going to MONGOLIA

2023-09-01 Thread Eddie D'Sa

This Italian old man called Francis, aged 86, is determined not to step
down.
He wants to parade his authority to all and sundry and is ever ready to
pronounce on tricky subjects like the Environment.

But how much does he understand?
Shouldn't he be quietly retiring in some Italian village and preparing
for his death?

Instead, he has decided to visit an exotic, little known country like
Mongolia.
How will the people of Mongolia benefit? What special wisdom does Pope
Francis possess to share with the Mongolians?
HAs he considered the expenses for the trip, including the costs for
those going with him?
Euros in high positions don't have to bother with costs. The attendants
will no doubt get all costs paid and ensure he has a comfy stay.
Shouldn't he have set an example by joining the lowest of workers such
as street sweepers and addressing other such lowly folks?
But no. A Euro Pope will insist on acting pompous & authoritarian
wherever he goes and he is no doubt convinced that he is guided by this
fellow called the Holy Spirit which is a handy fiction invented by Euro
Catholics.

The crucial question for the Church is: when will there be a Black Pope
and an end to the Euro papacy and the Euro doctrines??
Why can't Francis just announce his resignation with immediate effect
and let a Black or Asian Pope take over??

Surely the Black and Asian Catholics have had enough of the Euros and
insist on having one of their own at last.

Francis, you are just too old and not too bright.
JUST LEAVE THE VATICAN AND RETIRE TO SOME QUITE ITALIAN VILLAGE.
PLEASE !!

[Goanet] Ash please act firm to reform India as it now stands

2023-07-16 Thread Eddie D'Sa

Dear Ash,
You can be reputedly firm and resolute when it comes to the antics of
the BJP and their Guju boss MODI.
Only you, Ash, can discipline this Guju clown called Modi and get him
thrown him out of office.
India is tragically ruled by semi-literate & superstitious clowns like
Modi, Shah, Adiyanath and such.
India needs to be rid of this Hindu riff-raff and replaced by
intellectuals and scholars.
Only thoughtful people like you, Ash, can accomplish this
transformation.

Can you please seriously undertake this task and modernise India?

Eddie

From: "Ash Sarkar"
To: gdig...@btinternet.com
Sent: Friday, 14 Jul, 23 At 09:43
Subject: The small print
The Cortado | Analysis from Ash Sarkar, plus a round
up of the week’s content.
Morning all. Is that the faint sound of rejoicing I can hear in the air?
Yesterday, Rishi Sunak moved to bring an end to the waves of industrial
action paralysing the public sector, by offering workers pay rises of 5%
- 7%. While these figures do not come anywhere close to an
inflation-matching pay rise (which means, in real terms, people are
still finding their wages falling), they bring the public sector in line
with bumps in the private sector’s pay packets. It’s now up to the
unions to decide whether they’ll accept.

All good news, yes? Well, if you want to end on a high I advise you to
stop reading now.
YOU KNOW WHO WOULD LIKE A PAY RISE AS WELL 

The Small Print
If you found yourself tickled by the urge to look a gift horse in the
mouth, you’d be right. Though the 6.5% pay rise for teachers isn’t
something to be sniffed at (and unions are recommending that their
memberships accept it) there is some significant small print. £1.4bn
will have to be found over two years from existing Department of
Education budgets.

So far, the government is keeping pim on what’s going to get cut in
order to pay for the proposed wage increase. For school staff who’ve
been fighting for classroom resources, this will come as something of a
kick in the teeth – and it’s a crafty bit of politicking from the
Tories, pitting the interests of pupils against the needs of those who
teach them.

There’s a few snags in the pay offer for doctors too. 6% (plus a
£1,200 sweetener for junior doctors) is nowhere near the junior docs’
demand for full pay restoration, who are on day two of a five-day
walkout. What’s more, the Royal College of Nursing had already accepted
a pay offer of 5% – which will no doubt stick in the craw of members who
wanted to hold out for something better.

And, once more, it looks like the Tories are robbing Peter to pay
Paul. The Department of Health and Social Care are being instructed

to find £700m in savings to cover the cost of the floated pay rise,
which would probably spell cuts to investments in diagnostics and NHS
tech.

This flies in the face of what striking NHS staff have been arguing
for for months: that the health service needs both a pay increase for
staff, to improve retention, and more investment to tackle capacity.

 It’s also been reported

that the government want to pay for an NHS wage increase by sharply
hiking visa costs and the NHS surcharge for migrants coming to the UK.
Quick maths

from Henry Anderson suggest that the NHS surcharge (currently £470 for
under-18s and £624 for adults annually) will now go up to £776 for
children and £1035 for adults – about a two-thirds increase.

There’s always been a stinking unfairness at the heart of the NHS
surcharge for migrants. Why should people coming to this country, who
already pay into the system in the form of tax and National Insurance
contributions, have to stump up money again when they’re unlikely to
heavily rely on the NHS?

This cash grab has traditionally been a function of the hostile

‘I Hope To God I Am Wrong’ – Climate Change ‘Going Through The Roof’
4th July 2023

Why are we at Media Lens utterly terrified by climate collapse while
other people we know are mildly concerned, blithely indifferent or
cockily contrarian?
The simple answer is that we are doing this full-time and ‘doing this’
includes reading the unfiltered reports and thoughts of top climate
scientists on social media all day, every day.
Whenever we take a break from social media, the tendrils of the
corporate body-snatchers again start to insinuate themselves. We are
soothed by entertainment, by infotainment, by presstitute
prestidigitation normalising the unthinkable. Despite a mountain of
evidence, we are assured that the crisis is under the management of
fundamentally decent, rational leaders. Yes, dear reader, our sense of
crisis also abates.

There are two key responses to news of the latest climate disasters:
‘It’s bad, but not that bad. It’s manageable and we can carry on pretty
much as normal.’

An alternative take:
‘No, it is that bad. This is just the ball starting to roll – it will
gather more and more and more momentum, and it won’t stop. We need
drastic change now!‘
The second of these is inarguably correct. The first is the underlying
message delivered by state-corporate media that have an existential
vested interest in the status quo, in discouraging us from seeking
serious change. And this is exactly why the level of public alarm does
not yet reflect the terrifying, rollercoaster reality depicted in the
soaring and crashing graphs measuring temperatures and ice coverage.
Professor Bill McGuire, Emeritus Professor of Geophysical and Climate
Hazards at University College London, tweeted
  last
month:
‘I hope to God I am wrong, but to me, it is looking increasingly as if
we have reached some sort of tipping point, with the global temperature,
sea-surface temperature, ice loss, and other parameters, all going
through the roof.’
McGuire was responding to reports headlined

by CNN thus:
‘Four alarming charts that show just how extreme the climate is right
now’

The report noted:
‘We’re only halfway through 2023 and so many climate records are being
broken, some scientists are sounding the alarm, fearing it could be a
sign of a planet warming much more rapidly than expected.’
The ‘four alarming charts’ showed that global air temperatures have
risen to record levels in 2023. Oceans are also heating up to record
levels and show no sign of stopping. Antarctic sea ice is at record
lows. And atmospheric carbon dioxide levels hit a new record high in
2023. But many of these records are not merely being broken, they are
being obliterated. Brian McNoldy, an expert in hurricanes and sea level
rise at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School, captured
  it exactly:
‘I know there are a million people sharing temperature anomaly charts
and maps lately, but there’s a good reason for that. This is totally
bonkers and people who look at this stuff routinely can’t believe their
eyes. Something very weird is happening.’
At around the same time, nearly 110 million Americans in the United
States were reported

to be living in an area the US weather service flagged as ‘experiencing
extreme heat’, with at least 100 people having died as a result in
Mexico where temperatures came close to 50C. So far this year, the
overall heat-related deaths in Mexico are almost triple the figures in
2022.
Professor McGuire tweeted
  of
this crisis:

‘Unfortunately, you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.’
CNN notes that some scientists ‘have said while the records are
alarming, they are not unexpected due to both the continued rise of
planet-heating pollution and the arrival of the natural climate
phenomenon El Niño, which has a global heating effect’.
Ryan Stauffer, a NASA scientist studying air pollution and ozone,
tweeted

2023-06-29 Thread Eddie D'Sa

Hi India Cable,
Why keep telling us what the US thinks on this or that?
What of the rest of the world? Don't it count? To India Cable, India has
a Muslim problem.

Are you sure it has no US or Euro problem too?
The US fussed over Modi for 2 reasons: they want to sell weapons to
India and make money for itself (as usual) & trouble for the others.
The other reason is the US fear of China's growing clout. Whereas India
keeps buying weapons & other devices, China makes them & lots of other
things too.
The problem is that India (and Guju MODI in particular) have not much
real standing before the world, certainly no intellectual standing. They
are not inventive or innovative. Just busy with their gods and cows, and
love bullying Muslims and weaker peoples.
Hindus are cowards at heart; they can't deal with criticism, and worship
Whites generally, especially the Anglos (English speakers).
The British having ruled them them for centuries know the Hindus well,
very well.

So, India Cable, do present a more balanced viewpoint.

The results of the 2021 census were released by the Office for National

of people identifying as Christian in England and Wales (other regions
of the United Kingdom, such as Northern Ireland and Scotland report
their census data separately). According to the census, the number of
people identifying as Christian in England and Wales fell from 33.3
million (59.3%) in 2011 to 27.5 million (46.2%) in 2021, a shocking 17%

in 2011 to 6.5% in 2021, making it the fastest-growing religion in
England and Wales. Meanwhile, the number of non-religious people
increased from 25.2% to 37.2%.
Reacting to the latest data from the 2021 census, Archbishop of York

Why doesn't he resign in good grace, so that the state money wasted for

[Goanet] ASIAN CRITIQUE OF PAPAL ENCYCLICALS

2022-12-18 Thread Eddie D'Sa

The Popes (all Europeans) have written a number of Encyclicals on Social
Teaching.
They are bound to show a degree of Eurocentric bias and discerning Asian
theologians have not accepted them without reserve. In particular, a Sri
Lankan theologian, Aloysius Pieris, has presented a detailed critique.
He happens to be a founder member of the Ecumenical Association of Third
World Theologians (EATWOT) set up in 1976. He is a force to reckon with
in Asia and has lectured in the major institutions of the West.

Introduction
The critique has two aims:
1) to persuade the Vatican to listen and learn from concerned scholars
and groups so that the papal encyclicals are truly catholic;
2) to persuade Asian church leaders to evolve a Catholic Social Teaching
within Asia's own economic and cultural context.

Third world Perspective
Papal writings have failed to understand the authentic concept of a
Third world. Thus to Pope John II, the Third World is just a
geographical area where the poor are manufactured by a heartless
Christian First World. Unfortunately, the West's developmental ideology
in the 1960s neutralised the idea of a truly third way and reduced the
phrase to a mere economic category. Sadly, the Vatican also uncritically
accepted this ideology. Why didn't the Holy Ghost advise to Popes when
needed?
It was in the 1970s that the Third World came to be regarded as a
theological category and, EATWOT formed in this decade began to respond
to the West's model of development.

The Euro Popes continue to believe that their social teaching is
universally valid and needs merely adapting to local situations. Instead
of dialoguing with Bishops, theologians and the basic communities, the
Vatican has been issuing warnings and threats.

Asian Perspective
It is important to remember that Asia is almost totally (97%)
non-Christian. Asia is largely polytheistic or Marxist while only Islam
and Hinduism profess a theistic faith, together with a small minority of
Christians.
Three principles can be extracted from the western Christian formula and
re-formulated into an idiom acceptable to Asians:
(1) The theological basis of the papal social doctrine is the dignity of
the human person and this is nearly all Asian religions. The idea of
Image of God may be absent but the primacy of man and woman is affirmed
in other ways.
(2) There is a parallel between the principle of Natural Law in the CST
and the dharma/Tao or the principle of righteousness in some of Asia's
gnostic religions. But whereas in the CST, duties are derived from
rights rooted in the dignity of each person, Asian religions reverse the
process: it is dharma (duty) that justifies rights. So the dignity of
the human person is not the source of rights, rather one's
responsibilities to others.
(3)Finally there is convergence between the ancient Christian belief in
the Common Good over individual rights to private property, and Asia's
traditional sense of reverential obligation towards the common natural
resources.

The three aspects above (primacy of the human person, the human rights
language and primacy of the common good) are woven into a Christian
theory of commutative, distributive and social justice.
The papal doctrine seems tied to the West on whose colonial waves
Christianity was carried to the shores of Asia. Nowhere does the Pope
acknowledge the Christian sinfulness of colonialism so clearly stamped
in Asian history. It is difficult for non-Christian Asians to
disassociate the Pope's concern for Asia's social ills from the West's
blatant expansion of its technocratic power in Asia today. At stake is
the credibility of the CST, unlike Liberation theology, which draws from
a grassroots Third World experience.

It is time for Rome to acknowledge and correct its own failings in the
matter of social justice - silencing theologians it does to like,
overreacting to criticism levelled against its bureaucracy and most of
all its intransigent patriachalism.
Rome's unwillingness to confess its own sinfulness makes its version of
CST suspect from a biblical viewpoint. The Roman CST has been
preoccupied with general principles but is unable to respond critically
to the concrete situation.
The human rights theology of the West needs to be replaced by a
co-responsibility model. The obligations of the strong towards the weak
constitute the proper divine order priority of the needs of the poor
over the greed of the rich.
An authentic CST must promote participatory (rather than merely a
liberal) form of democracy.

Hi Aires,
At fault is Modi, BJP King. He no doubt believes that as PM of India he

Don't forget he was involved in the killings of over a thousand Muslims,
organised by his henchmen. He was then CM of Gujarat.

Has Modi been punished for this crime??
The Hindu notion of justice and fair play is not well defined and Modi
is ever ready to cut corners in securing whatever he wants.

Why won't he enroll in a basic English course that will enable him to
speak in English for a change?
At the moment he seems fluent in Hindi and Guju. But what of other
Indians who speak other languages?

The shame is that the other parties like the Congress is too timid to
challenge the BJP.

So Modi can do what he likes, as nobody dares challenge him.

Noticed a car parked in the city bearing registration No GA07 P 7770 and

It
so reveals that even some history sheeters are flouting these MLA

Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar should look into this serious breach of

Stickers should be issued with the vehicle registration number on it and

Those responsible for giving away these stickers in such a reckless

[Goanet] GLIMPSES OF CHURCH HISTORY

2022-11-24 Thread Eddie D'Sa

Period 1200 - 1300 CE
Pope Innocent III was crowned in Jan 1198 with the words:
"Thou art Father of Princes, Ruler of the world, Vicar of Jesus
Christ..."
He garments he wore shone with gold and jewels, and he rode on a
scarlet-clad horse; his foot was kissed by Prelates and Princes alike.
Within two years, he and not the Emperor was virtual Ruler of Rome and
Italy.
The Fourth Crusade was launched in 1201 and three years later, the
Eastern Capital, Constantinople, was sacked, the cathedral desecrated,
relics stolen and women, including nuns, raped. The Crusader chronicles
openly refer to the cannibalism practised by the Frankish knights.Kiing
John of England began taxing the clergy to help fund his wars and
refused to recognise the Pope who in turn excommunicated John and placed
all of England under an interdict. King John then confiscated church
property, banned church services and closed 8000 churches. The Pope then
asked King Philip of France to invade England. John then gave in and
promised to pay 1000 marks as annual rent to the Pope in addition to
Peter's pence.

Having dealt with King John, the Pope authorised a special crusade
against the Albigensians, a group considered heretical.. The pope
offered a special indulgence for 40-day service. As a result, a vast mob
of knights, clergy, peasants etc joined in. The crusaders marched to
Bezier, looting and killing on the way. The people locked themselves
into the two main churches. While requiem Mass was being chanted, the
doors were being hammered down by axes and soon gave way. None were
spared including babies. The last to go were the two celebrants, holding
a crucifix and chalice. The invaders then set fire to the town and
Bezier was turned to a heap of ashes.

Heretics were captured in the hundreds, their eyes gouged out, noses
lopped off and most were burnt on mass pyres. Meanwhile John of England
was forced to sign the Magna Carta . But Pope Innocent annulled the
Charter "from the unlimited power given to me by God".
The Pope passed more laws than the preceding 50 popes. A successor, Pope
Gregory IX (1227-41) set up the Inquisition to apprehend and punish
heretics. In 1239, Bishop Moranis of Champagne was accused to allowing
heretics in his diocese. He and 180 alleged heretics were burnt at the
stake.

Pope Innocent IV allowed the Inquisition to use torture and decreed that
disobedience even in thought was punishable. Entire families were
tortured when a member informed on them. Sentences were also passed on
the dead and their property confiscated.

 The Virtue of Gratitude

Romano Guardini: Who knows – if we may speak in this way – what God
feels when we not merely perform our duty toward Him, but give Him love.

Let us attempt to obtain a view of this gradually disappearing virtue
– gratitude. Let us ask what is necessary so that gratitude may become
possible.

Above all there is this: We can be grateful only to a
person. Gratitude and petition are possible only between an “I” and a
“Thou.” We cannot thank a law, a board, or a company. We may do so out
of mere politeness when the proper sum is handed to us, in order to keep
everything in the domain of good manners, but real gratitude does not
enter into the matter, for gratitude is the expression of a personal
encounter in human need.

But two persons, one of whom is situated so that he has
something or can do something, while the other has not or cannot – these
stand face to face. The one asks and the other is ready; the one gives
and the other thanks; and the two are united by a human tie. Here
gratitude is possible, and it becomes a basis for community.

Furthermore, gratitude is possible only in the realm of
freedom. For the fact that the sun rises in the morning or, to express
it scientifically, that the earth comes into such a position in relation
to the sun that it becomes visible: for this I am not grateful. It is
certainly true that on a bright morning very lively sentiments of
gratitude may arise because something so powerful and beautiful is
taking place. But these are the responses of man to Him who has created
all, or else they are the after-effects of a time in which the sun
itself was revered as a divinity. . . . .

within his own cabinet and the MLAs supporting his Government.
One accused of raping a minor girl is a Minister and the same Minister

the Panaji Police Station. Pramod Sawant also has as his Minister the

involved in land grabbing are now Cabinet Ministers and MLAs supporting
this government. Even some of the eight who recently joined the BJP also
have a gory criminal track record.
And if the Chief Minister knows that the ‘outsiders’ are indeed the
cause

of most crimes in Goa, what policy measures has his government taken to
tackle the problem? When will the government open its eyes and realize
that
the Casino trade it is patronizing is very much linked to the soaring
crime
rate in our once peaceful state. So also is the drug trade and
flourishing
prostitution which is merrily going on while the law enforcers

And is the Chief Minister not aware that politicians in Power depend on
muscle power and move around with bouncers to survive and carry on their
nefarious activities. So it's time that the political class takes
responsibility for the deteriorating law and order scenario rather than
blaming it on ‘outsiders’. And Mr. Chief Minister, if your very

Trump always seems to bounce back from adversity. This time, it’s hard
to see how.

When you announce a presidential run, you typically want to establish
yourself as the front-runner by having some momentum behind you and
demonstrating broad support from within your party. You certainly don’t
want to do it off a stunning electoral failure you’re being widely
blamed for, with members of your own party attacking you and people in
your inner circle advising you to delay the announcement.

But this is Donald Trump we’re talking about. Could it have gone any
other way?

Trump defiantly announced his 2024 presidential campaign Tuesday, a
week after a disappointing GOP midterm election performance led his own
advisers to urge him to delay the announcement. Having planned to take
credit for what he thought would be a Republican landslide that never
happened, Trump was in a bind: delay the event, looking weak and tacitly
admitting the election didn’t go his way, or barrel ahead with it
anyway, pissing off the Republican establishment while insisting
everything was going great. For anyone who’s watched Trump the past six
years, there was never any doubt what he’d do.

The speech was a relatively subdued one by Trump standards, heavy on
the teleprompter and mostly free of references to made-up election fraud
that have become synonymous with the former president over the past two
years (though he did at one point allude to China playing “a very active
role in the 2020 election”). It seemed a concerted attempt to present a
more sober, serious, presidential Trump, after a spate of
election-denying candidates in his mold fell short in their races last
week and the GOP’s entire underperformance was blamed on his years’
worth of efforts to cast doubt on and overturn the 2020 election result.

Living Bread Come Down from Heaven

Thomas Weinandy OFM Cap.: The Eucharist is a foretaste of eternal
life. Here on earth, we are taken up into the heavenly realm and
participate in the everlasting heavenly liturgy.

The Bishops of the United States have initiated a Eucharistic Revival
and will be discussing it today at their annual fall meeting in
Baltimore. It began on the Feast of Corpus Christi 2022 and will
conclude on Pentecost of 2025. The following is intended to be a modest
theological contribution to their Spirit-filled endeavor.

Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel contains Jesus’ Eucharistic
discourse. It begins with Jesus multiplying the five loaves and two
fishes – resulting in an abundance that filled twelve baskets of
leftovers. Following this miracle-sign, Jesus withdrew to the hills to
pray.

The next day the crowd went seeking for Jesus, and when they
found him, Jesus declared that they sought him not because they saw
signs, but because of the loaves. Jesus then said: “Do not labor for
the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life,
which the Son of man will give you.”

   The crowd asks what they must do to possess eternal life;
Jesus responds that they are to believe in him whom the Father sent.
They ask Jesus for a sign – and offer the example of their fathers
eating manna in the wilderness. Ironically, Jesus just performed that
very sign – a sign that they failed to recognize.

Re: [Goanet] Living Bread from Heaven

2022-11-16 Thread Eddie D'Sa

We live in the 21st century in which a few countries like the US
corporations dominate the rest and try to bend them to their will.
Do the wealthy CEOS know anything about this great Eucharist that you
speak of or care if it won't make them richer?
How many Catholics (I am one in name) care for this thing called the
Eucharist?
How does it transform them in their daily lives? How many Catholics
today care for this thing called the Eucharist?
Isn't frankly just a pious Euro belief of early Christianity and has no
meaning today? Thousands of Euro priests in the West receive the
Eucharist at Mass but then go on to molest young children.

Why hasn't the Eucharist transformed them into saintly characters? Now
don't tell me they don't have the right dispositions.
It is time that the Vatican & their friends banish these ancient
'sacraments' that make no sense today. Which Catholic is prepared to
defend the Eucharist today?

Best wishes.

   The crowd asks what they must do to possess eternal life;
Jesus responds that they are to believe in him whom the Father sent.
They ask Jesus for a sign – and offer the example of their fathers
eating manna in the wilderness. Ironically, Jesus just performed that
very sign – a sign that they failed to recognize.

[Goanet] The INQUISTIION TODAY

2022-11-14 Thread Eddie D'Sa

It was pleasantly surprising that the fellows running the Catholic Thing
decided to descend from their high perch and return to an old Bible
story - the story of Mary Magdalene.

So they do believe in the Bible after all.

Last week I had written on the old malevolent institution loved by the
Vatican called the Inquisition. But the Inquisition is not dead.
It has resurrected under a new name - Congregation for the Doctrine of
the Faith (CDF) and its head in the late 1990s was a German Cardinal
called Joseph Ratzinger in his 70s. He was soon on the lookout for a
victim; and he soon found one in the person of Sri Lankan theologian Fr
Tissa Balasuriya.
Tissa had written a book Mary and Human Liberation in which he had
raised a number of questions and comments, such as
1. In what way is Jesus united with God?... In what way is the Bible
inspired? Such issues were elaborated later in Christian history.
2. Who can know whether Mary was a virgin after the birth of Jesus?
There has been a trend to attribute perpetual virginity to Mary but the
scriptural evidence is weak.
3. Th usual perspective of original sin is not acceptable in other Asian
religions. That whole generations of peoples died with a lesser chance
of salvation is repugnant to the idea of a just and loving God.
The fact is that an Asian theologian had challenged the traditional
portrayal of Mary by the 'capitalist, patriarchal and colonialist West'.
Fr Tissa told the India media: "I have simply portrayed Mary as a role
model for working class women."
The truth is that the Vatican is increasingly uncomfortable with the
independent stand taken by South Asian theologians in recent years. Like
all Euro institutions, the Vatican would be happy with a submissive
posture from the Asians and Blacks.

Subject: Mary the Great

Mary the Great

Brad Miner profiles a remarkable woman: Mary Magdalene. She has been a
frequent subject in art, and Domenico Tintoretto painted a truly superb
portrait of her.

Who was she really? Can we even agree on what to call her? Is she Mary
Magdalene or Mary Magdalen; Mary of Magdala or The Magdalene; maybe
simply Madeleine?

Her proper name aside (which would have been Miryam in
Hebrew or Maryam in Aramaic), we know that she was very important among
the Lord’s disciples – so much so that she’s mentioned in the Gospels
more often than most of the apostles.

Luke (8:2-3) tells us she “had been cured of evil spirits”
and that “seven demons had gone out” of her, and Mark (16:19) says so
too, a detail he adds to the story of her visit to the tomb and Christ’s
appearance to her in the garden after His Resurrection. When she told
the apostles of the Lord’s rising, they didn’t believe her. (Lk. 8:9-11)

Matthew mentions her three times (27:56 and 61 and 28:1),
again in the context of Easter. And John, witness to the Crucifixion,
notes that Mary Magdalene was at the foot of the cross with Mary, the
mother of Jesus, and Mary, wife Clopas. (Jn. 19:25)

John also records her presence at the tomb (20:1) on that
greatest of Sunday mornings. She – among all the other followers of
Jesus – was first to see the empty tomb.

But John also gives us the remarkable fact that she was the
first to be in the presence of the risen Lord.

 Build Then, Always

Anthony Esolen: The baser passions sell: sex, fear, anger, hatred.
They sell the farm and all the stock before the farmer has gotten out of

I’m writing on November 9, one day after the “most significant
election in American history,” as some people were saying, and I don’t
dispute it, except I note that every big election since 1992 has been
the “most significant in American history,” and we have meanwhile slid
and slumped farther into moral confusion and madness.

In the days of Bill Clinton, that fatherless non-entity with
a taste for young women and, somewhere in his muddled soul, for America,
it was a scandal that he took advantage of a young female aide as he
did, though one journalist said, with almost eager physical description,
that she’d have performed oral sex on him just to keep abortion “legal
and safe.” In our days, fourth-graders are given
instructions on the same subject, and the only scandal is that some
people think that’s still a little young for that. As for abortion, I’ve
heard many women insist that men should have no say in it at all. And
thereby they provide, unwittingly, a testimony to their own unfitness to
belong to any civil society where people, as rational and social
creatures and not millions of islands of desire, gather to discuss the
common good and how to secure it.
Yesterday, I said to a small group of conservative and
devout Catholics in Canada that my country, the United States, was a
“banana republic without the bananas,” and that it still would be that
way on November 9, even if a tide washed a few dozen new Republican
congressmen into office.

[Goanet] The Catholic INQUISITION

2022-11-07 Thread Eddie D'Sa

he Catholic INQUISITION
The Inquisition was an ecclesiastical court and process of the Roman
Catholic Church setup to discover and punish heresy. It wielded immense
power and brutality in medieval and early modern times. The Inquisitions
function was principally assembled to repress all heretics of rights,
depriving them of their estate and assets which became subject to the
ownership of the Catholic treasury, with each relentlessly sought to
destroy anyone who spoke, or even thought differently to the Catholic
Church. This system for close to over six centuries became the legal
framework throughout most of Europe that orchestrated one of the most
strict religious orders in the course of mankind.

Inquisition Procedure
At root the word Inquisition signifies as little of evil as the
primitive “inquire,” or the adjective inquisitive, but as words, like
persons, lose their characters by bad associations, so “Inquisition” has
become infamous and hideous as the name of an executive department of
the Roman Catholic Church.
All crimes and all vices are contained in this one word Inquisition.
Murder, robbery, arson, outrage, torture, treachery, deceit, hypocrisy,
cupidity, holiness. No other word in all languages is so hateful as this
one that owes its abhorrent preeminence to its association with the
Roman Church.
In the Dark Side of Christian History, Helen Ellerbe describes how the
same men who had been both prosecutor and judge decided upon the
sentence of heresy. Once an Inquisitor arrived to a heresy-ridden
district, a 40 day period of grace was usually allowed to all who wished
to confess by recanting their faith.

http://return2sanity.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-horrors-of-church-and-its-holy.html

After this period of grace had finished, the inhabitants were then
summoned to appear before the Inquisitor. Citizens accused of heresy
would be woken in the dead of night, ordered, if not gagged, and then
escorted to the holy edifice, or Inquisition prison for closer
examination.
In 1244, the Council of Harbonne ordered that in the sentencing of
heretics, no husband should be spared because of his wife, nor wife
because of her husband, and no parent spared from a helpless child. Once
in custody victims waited before their judge anxiously, while he
pondered through the document of their accusation. During the first
examination, enough of their property was likewise confiscated to cover
the expenses of the preliminary investigation.
The accused would then be implicated and asked incriminating and luring
questions in a dexterous manner of trickery calculated to entangle most.
Many manual’s used and promulgated were by the grand inquisitor
Bernardus Guidonis, the Author of Practica Inquisitionis (Practice of
the Inquisition) and the Directorium Inquisitorum (Guideline for
Inquisitors) completed by Nicolaus Eymerich, grand inquisitor of Aragon.
These were the authoritative text-books for the use of inquisitors until
the issue of Torquemada’s instructions in 1483, which was an enlarged
and revised Directorium.

Of Tattoos and Stigmata

Fr. Thomas G. Weinandy, OFM Cap.: Not many receive the visible
stigmata as did Sts. Paul, Francis, and Pio, yet all of us do bear the
invisible stigmata, for we too have died and have risen with Christ.

I recently saw a cartoon of a football coach exhorting his new
recruits. After he had finished his pep talk, one young rookie asked:
“When do we get our tattoos?” Which led me to reflect.

For the past twenty or more years, tattoos have become very
popular, both for men and women. Moreover, they have become much more
elaborate and ubiquitous – on arms, legs, thighs, back, chest, belly,
and neck – in various combinations. Likewise, there are various creative
designs – swirling patterns in multiple colors interlaced with flowers,
butterflies, or birds.

Although some tattoos are hideous, macabre, and even
demonic, many tattoos are “in good taste” and often quite appealing, and
even sexy – that is, if one is young and, so, with still firm skin.

Few things can be more unattractive than a tattoo on drooping,
sagging, wrinkled, aging flesh. In the not-too-distant future, such
withering tattoos will become common.

[Goanet] GLIMPSES OF CHURCH HISTORY: period 1000-1100 CE (Part 2)

2022-11-05 Thread Eddie D'Sa

Are all Popes saints?
Pope Gregory VII believed that, as a successor of St Peter's, he had
absolute power and he drew up a list of 27 Declarations of papal powers
and privileges.

Among them:
- No one on earth can judge the Pope
- The Church has never erred and never will, until the end of time
- The Pope can depose bishops, emperors and kings
- All princes must kiss his feet
- a rightly elected Pope is a saint.

Forgers at work
Most of the Declarations were based on forged documents in the Roman
archives. Gregory is said to have engaged a whole school of forgers to
touch up ancient texts,
distorting or reversing their meaning as the occasion demanded. The best
known forgeries were the 9th century of 115 documents, supposedly
written by early Bishops.
Armed with this authority, Pope Gregory set about destabilising
Kingdoms. The Greek emperor and Polish King were deposed. The Holy Roman
Emperor Henry IV was ordered to stop interfering with Church
appointments. Henry was furious and nullified Gregory's election.
Gregory countered by excommunicating the emperor.

Oddly, Henry' mother backed the Pope. Princes began withdrawing their
allegiance and Henry realised he had to make peace with the Pope. Making
his way through snowdrifts, Henry's party reached Countess Mathilda's
fortress. Henry was ordered to hand over his crown and royal regalia and
publicly confess his unworthiness as emperor. He was left knee deep in
snow, teeth chattering, begging for mercy. Only when Mathilda pleaded
for Henry's life did the Pope relent. Henry had to swear to abide by the
people's will and do penance.
On his return home, Henry appointed aother pope, Clement III. In 1085,
Henry marched into Rome, forcing Pope Gregory to flee to Naples.

The next Pope, Victor III, was kept out of Rome by anti-Pope Clement
III. So was his successor for the first six years of his reign. In 638
Muslims had taken over the region but allowed pilgrims' visits. Then in
1071, the Turks took control and reversed the policy. Pope Urban II
called upon Christian Europe to wage a Holy War and recapture the Holy
Land. He asked in a famous sermon in 1095: "We do not even share the
inhabited earth equally with the Muslims. They have made Asia their
homeland..."
500 years before, Mohamed had promised paradise to those slain in
battle. Urban now promised forgiveness of sins to all those who joined
to free the Holy Land. In 1099, a band of knights stormed into Asia
Minor, massacring Muslims and Jews. They captured Jerusalem and set up a
Latin kingdom there. More crusades were to follow.

 The Problem with
 “Recreational” Sex

Anthony Esolen: Two young people passionately in love yield to their
desires, though they are not married. What they are doing is wrong by
attendant circumstances, not wrong per se: were they married, it would
be a good and glorious thing.

I am grateful to the Catholic faith that has led me, often despite my
hesitation, deeper into reality, when so much about us is aimed at our
abstraction, our losing what slender grip we have on real things and not
ideas about things, or worse, words passing for ideas about things.

Recently, I was lectured by a woman defending the right to
have an abortion, because, she said, “some people like to have
recreational sex,” and they should not have to worry about pregnancy and
childbirth in case the synthetic hormones fail, as they often do.

I thought about that phrase, “recreational sex,” and how
weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable it is, this pretense that a man and
woman can unite in that unique act, and have it mean no more than if
they were strips of Velcro stuck together for an afternoon.

Their bodies are more honest. They prepare themselves in
countless ways we are still discovering, to beget and to bear the child
that may be the fruit of that union. But in the abstracted minds of the
players, there is no child, there shall be no child, there is nothing
but “recreation.”

And that is an attempt to strain the act so thin, there is
hardly any blood left in it, any real humanity. It’s nonsense. In fact,
many a thing ceases to be what it is as soon as you say it is merely
recreational.

[Goanet] GLIMPSES OF CHURCH HISTORY - Period 1000-1100 CE

2022-11-03 Thread Eddie D'Sa

Sylvester II (999-1003), noted for his learning, was followed by three
undistinguished successors.
The influential Count Gregory of Tusculum then stepped in and got his
son Theophylact, a layman, elected as Pope Benedict VIII. He was soon
ousted by a rival claimant, Gregory, but was restored in 1014 by King
Henry II of Saxony (Germany). The Pope rewarded the King by crowning him
Holy Roman Emperor in 1022.

In 1032, Count Gergory's grandson became Pope Benedict IX. He was only
14 (some say no more than 11). Six months later, a rival faction plotted
to murder him but took fright by a solar eclipse that occurred that day.
Young Benedict went through the motions of office: celebrating High
Mass, appointing Bishops, presiding over Councils. But he led a
dissolute life feasting on immorality until the end of his life, as St
Peter Damian (1107-72) wrote. Eventually, a Roman faction expelled him
as unfit to rule. A new Pope was installed as Pope Sylvester III. He
ruled for some three uneasy months when Benedict was restored by a
Tusculum group. He continued to be devoted to pleasure and plundered the
church treasury.
He next decided to sell the papal office itself for 1500 pounds of gold
in weight.
He sold it to his godfather, Gratian, head priest of St John's Gratian
paid the price (his own money) and took over as Gregory VI in 1045.

Within a year, Sylvester III laid claim to the papacy supported by his
tribal faction. Benedict also decided to return and in 1046, Rome had
three Popes, each powerless to eject the other two. In 1046, King Henry
III was persuaded to Rome. Benedict fled to Tusculum. Sylvester was
imprisoned while Pope Gregory VI was exiled to Germany. King Henry II
then appointed Clement II as the new Pope who in turn made Henry Holy
Roman Emperor. On Clement's death in 1047, Benedict returned to reclaim
the papal office for the second time but in July 1048, Emperor Henry III
again returned, and this time Benedict fled for good. It is not clear
how he died.

Listen to the Communion

 of Saints

Stephen P. White: As the Barque of Peter shudders through choppy seas,
we can practice being a “listening Church” by turning our attention to
the witnesses who by their lives have proclaimed the Truth that saves.

This week’s twin celebrations, All Saints and All Souls, provide an
occasion to step back from our current circumstances in the Church and
the world, and to view things against a broader horizon.

More than a distant constellation of moral exemplars, more
than even a host of intercessors pleading for us before the Throne of
Grace, the Communion of Saints is what awaits each one of us whose
salvation has been won through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The
glorious diversity of saints is perfected in, even as it reflects, the
splendor of the Triune God in whose life they now share in full.

If beatitude is what we were made for, our ultimate
destination and goal, the commemoration of All Souls is a reminder that
the way is narrow. The souls in Purgatory will go to Heaven. But even as
we pray for their purification and speedy welcome into beatitude, we
cannot but be reminded of the urgent need for repentance and conversion
in our own lives.

And that brings us to where the rest of us are, this pilgrim
Church on earth. And down here, we’re a bit of a mess.

The Church is mired in another of her periodic bouts of
self-reflection, which often seem more like navel-gazing than an
examination of conscience – in recent months and years, particularly
around the Synod on Synodality.

Glimpses of Church History: period 900-1000 CEIn our previous episode,
we covered Pope Sergius III who became Pope in 904 after his supporters
murdered Leo V and Cardinal Christopher. Marozia's first son (by Pope
Sergius) became Pope John XI in 931. She married again and when her
second husband died, she married King Hugo of Provence in 932. Her
second son called Alberic came to know that Hugo planned to blind him.
So he appealed to the Romans to rise against Hugo. The Romans agreed and
when they got ready for battle, Hugo abandoned his wife and fled.

Alberic put the Pope, his half-brother, under permanent arrest and
imprisoned his mother in Hadrian's mausoleum where she remained for over
50 years. Alberic died in 954 at the age of 40. His son Octavian became
Pope John XII about the age of 18. He turned out to be one of the most
profligate popes known. He was a great gambler and kept a stud farm of
2000 horses which were fed on almonds and figs soaked in wine.
He stole the offerings of pilgrims and violated female pilgrims in St
Peter's. He kept a harem at the Lateran Palace and rewarded his
paramours with golden chalices taken from St Peter's.

King Otto of Germany came to John's aid when the King of Italy occupied
the papal states. John made him emperor of the Holy Roman empire in 962.
Otto asked John to mend his ways, whereupon John fled to Tivoli after
plundering the treasury of St Peter's. Otto then called a synod of
cardinals and bishops who read a list of John's misdeeds (charging for
ordinations, having sex with numerous women, castrating a cardinal,
incest with relatives, etc). John was duly informed of the Synod
decisions but John warned the Synod that he would excommunicate the
Bishops. John was urged to return and when he didn't, he was deposed by
the Synod and a new Pope, a German, was appointed as the next pope, Leo
VIII. Thereupon, John returned and the Leo VIII fled home to Germany.
John had his revenge on the plotters by maiming or executing them.
John then resumed his old ways. He was caught in bed with another's
wife. The husband is reported to have taken a hammer and smashed John's
skull. He was only 26 and it was his 8th year as Pope.

Roberto de Mattei says that the mission of the Church and of the Vicar
of Christ on earth is to recall the saving truths that the world ignores
or despises.
But what are these 'saving truths'? Who are being saved and from what?
Can your writers elaborate?

And does your 'world' include the non-Catholics and non-Christians?
And as for the Vicars of Christ, how many were holy & worthy leaders?
It may be worth going back in history. Be prepared to be surprised and
even shocked.

Among the references consulted were the Catholic Encyclopedia and Peter
de Rosa's Vicars of Christ (1994).
The 10th century Popes were in a class by themselves. The first pope of
that century was Benedict IV (900-03. His successor, Leo V, reigned for
just month when he was seized and imprisoned by a usurper, Cardinal
Christopher. Meanwhile, Cardinal Sergius got both Leo and Christopher
merdered and their leader became Pope Sergius III in 904.

Sergius had Pope Formosus, now dead 10 years, re-exhumed and condemned
once again. The corpse was then beheaded, three more fingers cut off and
thrown into the river Tiber. The headless body was caught in a
fisherman's net and returned a second time to St Peter's.
At the time, Senator Theophylact, civic head of the city, had supported
Sergius' party and the family (wife Theodora and daughters Marozia and
Theodora came to know Pope Sergius well. He seduced Marozia and made her
his mistress around 905 (the year after he became Pope when she was 15
and he was 45.

He soon had a son by him who was later to become Pope.

Meanwhile, Theodora's influence had grown. One of her lovers was
reportedly John, Bishop of Bolgna. Under her influence, he rose to
become Bishop of Ravenna. The Bishop of Ravenna became Pope John X in
914.

(more to follow).

[Goanet] Pope Francis issues lame apology for abuse & murder of thousands of Canadian natives

2022-10-24 Thread Eddie D'Sa

Pope Francis decided to visit Canada to apologise for the massive abuse
and killings of thousands of indigenous Canadians (including children)
over decades.

And all he could do was issue a verbal apology for the damage done.
What sort of Catholic God would allow the natives to be abused and
killed by the white clerics without inflicting punishment on the evil
doers?
And was a plain verbal apology enough? Why was substantive financial and
material reparations not dispensed over decades for the damage done?

It's disgraceful that the white Pope, ultimately responsible for the
evil done to the Natives sat comfortably on a chair while he was wheeled
about on open ground accompanied by Native leaders. Why didn't he have
the good sense and humility to adopt a kneeling posture and move
kneeling to indicate appreciation of the sufferings of the Natives? Such
a posture would remind him of the pain inflicted on the Natives.
The apology as offered seems quite inadequate and suggests a lack of
understanding of the sufferings meted out to the Natives by the holy
white men.

May we ask the Chief Minister, if that is the case, why he is moving

In fact the total fleet of police personnel entrusted with the Chief

of security cover for the Chief Minister in a so claimed very safe Goa.
May we also know as to how Chief Minister Pramod Sawant manages to get
the

Our elected representatives should at all times act respectfully and

GLIMPSES OF CHURCH HISTORY: Period:1000-1100 CE

"Times New Roman"">Count Gregory
SylvesterII(999-1003) was noted for his learning. He is said to have
introduced Arabicnumerals into Europe. His next 3 successors, elected by
dominant factions ofthe time, were undistinguished. The influential
Count Gregory of Tusculum thenstepped in and got his son Theophylact, a
layman, elected as Pope Benedict VIII. Hewas soon ousted by a rival
claimant, Gregory but was restored in 1014 by KingHenry II of Saxony
(Germany). The pope rewarded the King by crowning him HolyRoman emperor
in 1022. Benedict was succeeded by his brother as Pope John XIX.About
this time, King Canute of newly formed England visited Rome and
wasimpressed. “A great assembly of nobles was present. I spoke with the
Emperorhimself and the Sovereign Pope about the needs of my people,
English andDanes…”

PopeBenedict IX
In 1032, Count Gregory’s grandson, another Theophylact, became Pope
BenedictIX. He was 14 (some say no more than 11). Six months later, a
rival factionplotted to murder him in St Peter’s basilica but took
fright when an eclipse ofthe sun occurred on the day, turning the
interior and all faces an eerie‘yellow and saffron’! The pope’s Tusculan
supporters smuggled him out of Rome.

The young Benedict went through the motions of office:celebrating high
mass at St Peters, appointing bishops, presiding overcouncils. But he
led a dissolute life. St Peter Damian (1007-72), doctor of thechurch,
said: “The wretch, from thebeginning of his pontificate to the end of
his life, has feasted on immorality.”
Eventually a Roman faction expelledhim after 12 years in office as unfit
to rule. A Bishop John was installed asPope Sylvester III in 1045. He
ruledfor some three uneasy months when Benedict was restored by a
Tusculan group.Sylvester fled to his tribesmen in the Sabine Hills.

Papacysold
Opposition to Pope Benedict grew.He continued to be “devoted to
pleasure” as Pope Victor II was to write and hadplundered the church
treasury. About 1045, he had set his eyes on a beautifulcousin but her
father, Girard de Saxo, insisted that Benedict must abdicate aspope
before he could marry her. He agreed but first decided to sell the
papaloffice itself to his godfather, John Gratian. The price: about 1500
pounds ofgold in weight. Gratian, a goodChristian and head priest of St
John’s church, had received innumerablecomplaints about Benedict’s
conduct. Gratian’s money was his own, meant for therepair of Rome’s
great churches. He paid it to Benedict in a desperate bid tosave St
Peters from total disrepute. His godson retired to the Alban Hills.

Gratian took over as Gregory VI in 1045. There was barelyenough to pay
for the day-to-day running of the court. Anarchy prevailed inRome and
the papal states, bandits thronged the roads and highways,
clericalcelibacy was observed more in the breach. Within a year,
Sylvester III again laidclaim to the papacy supported by his tribal
faction. Benedict, rejected by hislady love, also decided to return.
Late in 1046, Rome had three popes, eachpowerless to eject the other
two.
In desperation, a group of Romancitizens and priests appealed to King
Henry III to take over Romeand clear the mess. He arrived on 20 December
1046. Benedict promptly fled toTusculum. Sylvester was imprisoned as an
imposter while Pope Gregory VIadmitted: “Simony had entered into my
election…I must be deposed.” He wasexiled to Germany.

Henry III appointed Clement II as the new pontiff who inturn obliged by
making Henry Holy Roman Emperor. On Clement’s death in 1047,Benedict
returned and reclaimed the papal office for the second time. In
July1048, Emperor Henry III again returned to Rome and this time
Benedict fled forgood and out of history. It is not clear how he died.

The Great Schism
Benedict IX’s successor, Damascus II, died within a year and
wassucceeded by Pope Leo IX. The finalyear of Leo’s reign, 1054, is
noted for the formal break between the Latin andOrthodox churches
through mutual excommunications by the Pope in Rome and thePatriarch in
Constantinople. The break or schism between East and West stillstands.
[A major point at dispute (hold your breath) is whether the Holy Spirit
proceeds from the Father or via his Son!]

PopeGregory VII
Hildebrand of Tuscany, chaplain toGregory VI, had witnessed Emperor
Henry III depose and humiliate him. Theincident had etched deeply into
his mind. He had accompanied Gregory into exileinto Germany and rose to
be prior at the Benedictine abbey of Cluny. His famespread and he became
advisor to four pontiffs, from Victor II to Alexander II(see Table). At
the latter’s funeral in 1073, Hildebrand was publicly acclaimedas the
new pope. He took the name GregoryVII. All papal appointments needed the
Emperor’s approval and, much againsthis will, Gregory was forced to ask
this of 17-year old Emperor Henry IV. Hedecided to end this prerogative

Re: [Goanet] Pope launches global consultation forum

Hi Albert,

Thanks for the news about the papal consultation.
I don't think that the BBC is a reliable source for this sort of news
item. It rarely gives up its imperial outlook.
There was no mention, for example, of brown or black people. And perhaps
the Pope didn't either.

So I have made some changes in what you submitted.

Pope Francis launches consultation on Church reform - perhaps the most
ambitious attempt

 at reformation for 60 years.
It is a two-year process that seeks to consult every Catholic parish
around the world on the

 future direction of the Church.
Controversial issues include women's ordination, married priests,
child abuse by priests, Church exit by Catholics in the thousands.

The consultation process will work in stages:
In the "listening phase", people in parishes and dioceses will be
able
to discuss a wide range of issues. Pope Francis said it was important
to
hear from those who were often on the fringes of local Church life
such as
women; we must hear about racism & discrimination against brown and
black people.
Return of the land stolen by Euro migrants from Brown people in the
Americas and Australia.
Reparations for the vast resources grabbed from brown people from
their own land.

The "continental phase" will see bishops gather to discuss and
formalise their findings.
Pope Francis warned against the process becoming an intellectual
exercise that fails to address the real-world

 issues faced by Catholics.

[Goanet] CHURCH HISTORY: how Christ's Teachings got Europeanised

2021-09-30 Thread Eddie D'Sa
The conquests of Alexander (two centuries after the Persian victory in
Babylonia) led to a further Jewish dispersal to places like Alexandria
in Egypt, Antioch, Rome and other cities of the Greco-Roman world.

Christ's doctrine was dressed up in an alien philosophy (2nd century)
Finding itself in the Greco-Roman civilisation, the early Christian
church had to decide whether its doctrine and practices should remain
within Judaism. The Jerusalem Christians regarded their faith as a
variant of Judaism but Paul, a Roman, argued against it. His view was
accepted and Christians were freed from the requirements of
circumcision, food laws and Sabbath observance.

In the Roman world, the Christians encountered Greek philosophy and were
not intellectually equipped to resist its influence. Their leaders (like
Clement of Alexandria, Origen and Gregory of Nyssa) began to interpret
the gospel in the categories of Greek thought. In particular, there
strongly influenced by the Jewish philosopher, Philo Judaeus (20 BCE -
50 BC) who loved Plato's thought and argued that the same God spoke
through Greek philosophy and Jewish religion. For example, they
appropriated his notion of Logos, a concept alien to Jesus and planted
it into the very beginning of the Gospel of John (chap 1, verse 1).
[Ref 3]

Black US theologian, James Cone, The gospel of Jesus can never be
identified with the power of the state... This was the error of the
early church. By becoming the religion of the Roman state, Christianity
became the opposite of what Jesus intended." (from God of the Oppressed,
Seabury Press, NY 1975))

Asian Jesuit theologian, Aloysius Pieris, put it this way:
“Greek culture was so pervasive …(and) Christianity allowed itself to be
Hellenised…After the persecutions, links with Judaism were severed and
those with Greco-Roman culture were strengthened…The Church Fathers were
interested in non-Christian philosophy as intellectual equipment to
grasp revelation and formulate it in a manner intelligible to the
‘pagan’ culture in which they lived. Thus began the tradition in which
Christian ‘religion’ learned to use philosophy…there developed a sort of
academic tradition which revolved around the system of thought to the
exclusion of the experiential dimension…” (Ref 4, p 21-25).

Among the influential early Church Fathers were:
 - St Irenaeus (c.130-200), a Greek theologian and later Bishop of Lyon
(178-200). He was the disciple of Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna - himself
of John the Apostle. He attacked Gnosticism and helped define the Books
of the Bible (Digest 4.2).
 - St Clement, head of a theology school at Alexandria and thoroughly
Greek in his outlook. He injected ideas from Greek philosophy into the
Christian faith.
 - Tertullian (c. 160-240) of Carthage, a prominent Latin Father,
introduced the Roman legal idiom into Christian theology.

Appropriating Greek ideas - Logos, Mind & Spirit

Debate raged on the Logos concept and its identification with Christ.
Justin Martyr, influenced by Philo, held that the Logos was a kind of
second God incarnated in a historical person, Jesus for the salvation of
humans. Irenaeus, on the other hand, held that the Logos, incarnate in
Jesus, was the divine revelation. He said: "Jesus Christ was both man
and God, fully man and the incarnation of the Logos..."

Tertullian declared that although God in substance is one, God has three
persona, a trinity of manifestations. Logos or reason is in God and
expresses itself in word. Quoting the Gospel of John, he said the Word
became incarnate.

Clement held that God is knowable only through the Logos, the mind of
God. He was convinced that Jesus is the Logos, the guide to humanity.
His successor at the theology school, Origen, theorised that 1) there is
one God, the Father, creator of all things, 2) Jesus Christ, God-man,
was the incarnation of the Logos and co-eternal with the Father, and 3)
the uncreated Holy Spirit is associated with the Father and the Son.

The Council of Nicaea 325 CE
The Emperor Constantine claimed the sole right to convoke religious
assemblies. Though not a Christian, the bishops remained under his
jurisdiction while he called himself ‘Bishop of Bishops’. In 314, he
called the Council of Arles. and in 321, the First General Council of
the Church.
Sylvester I who was Pope at the time had no part in calling the Council.
The aim was to resolve the Arian heresy (that the Son was inferior to
the Father) raging at the time. The Council was held in 325 in Bithynia
at a place called Nicaea in today's Turkey. Some 300 bishops attended,
all but six from the East. The Pope did not even attend and sent two
representatives instead. Athanasius (c. 296-373) was a staunch opponent
of Arianism, itself derived from the neo-Platonist belief in the Logos,
a term which came to be used to designate Christ. Most of the bishops
were in favour of Arianism (named after Arius, a priest from

The 24th of September 2021 may remain as a historical marker -- albeit
of a
dishonorable type -- in the annals of history for the legal fraternity
of
Goa, on account of the alleged shady electioneering at the elections of
our

Goa High Court Bar Association.

The entire process was not insulated against extraneous considerations
of

unethical nature. As members of legal fraternity we are duty-bound to
uphold the Rule of Law in our deeds and actions, howsoever strong be our
desire to win elections. Sadly, Goa’s highest Court of Justice
helplessly

witnessed an atrocious tragedy of sorts.

For the first time ever these elections to our Bar Association witnessed
a
huge flow of cash and considerations in kind. Our profession was no
longer
noble when we fell prey to such temptations, throwing the sacrosanct
Code

of ethics to the winds.

It is an extremely sad precedent that has been set. If we as
lawyers lose our right to think independently, act appropriately and
speak

out fearlessly the future is bleak. Can we, then, expect anything better
from other sections of the community? Winning elections by making
unlawful
and immoral inducements is a crying shame more so within the precincts
of a

Court of Justice.

September 24th will be remembered as a very dark day for Goa’s legal
fraternity when we advocates were sadly guided in breaching the law by
succumbing to acts which were absolutely unprincipled and horrendous to
say
the least. We abdicated our responsibility as guardians of law that we
had

so solemnly resolved to be.

As an officer of the Court, I have diligently complied with my bounden
duty
by informing the above to the Chief Justice of India, the Bombay High

[Goanet] GLIMPSES OF CHURCH HISTORY

2021-09-24 Thread Eddie D'Sa

How did the Church come into being?
For an answer, we helpless Goans and other Asians have to depend on the
wisdom of the Europeans & their institutions.

Here is what an American Archdiocese (of St Paul) has to say:
By his Cross, Jesus gave birth to the Church. The origin and growth of
the Church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the
open side of the crucified Jesus.
The Holy Spirit revealed the Church at Pentecost, empowering the
Apostles to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

[So where is this mysterious Spirit to be found? Does he live in London
or Mapusa? Such questions must not be asked.

We Asians must just believe whatever the wise ones of the West say.]

NOW FOR SOME HISTORY:
The New Testament began with the letters of St Paul from about 48 CE
until his death by Roman Emperor Nero in 64 CE.
When Paul died, not a single Gospel had been written. Paul was a
controversial figure and a reading of Galatians shows that he clashed
with Peter and the Jerusalem church leaders. There are irreconcilable
differences between Paul’s views and the account in the Book of Acts
(supposedly about Paul’s work). Paul never mentions Jesus’ supernatural
birth and has a different idea of his resurrection.
The official Church piously believes that Peter was Bishop of Rome but
nobody has said so and there is no document as evidence.

Let's move a few centuries ahead.
Innocent I became Pope in 401. He was the son of the previous pope,
Anastasius I (399-401).
The Church at the time preached that babies who died without baptism (a
Catholic ritual) went to hell for all eternity. But other Popes went
further. They believed that if baptized babies died without communion,
they went straight to hell.

SOME WEIRD EVENTS
In the closing years of the 9th century, rival factions battling for the
Chair of St Peter brought chaos to Rome. In 896 the deranged Pope
Stephen VII (belonging to one faction) decided to unearth the 9-month
old corpse of a Corsican predecessor, Pope Formosus (891-96) who had
belonged to another faction. He had the corpse dressed in full papal
robes and placed on the throne in the Lateran palace. He then proceeded
to interrogate ‘him’ personally. Formosus was charged with becoming pope
under false pretences.
After being found guilty by the Synod, the corpse was stripped of all
but a hair-shirt clinging to the withered flesh. The two fingers used to
give the apostolic blessing were hacked off. The body was dragged
through the palace and hurled on to the mob in the streets. They in turn
dragged it to the river Tiber and flung it in. The corpse held together
by the hairshirt was recovered by Formosus’ supporters and given a
decent burial. It was eventually returned to its tomb in St Peter’s.

Later in the same year 896 Stephen himself was siezed and strangled. His
supporters elected a certain Cardinal Sergius as pope while the opposing
party elected one of their own. In the violence that followed, Sergius
and his supporters were chased out of the city. Over the next 12 months,
four more popes (among them Romanus and Theodore II) scrambled onto the
bloodstained Chair of St Peter, maintaining themselves precariously for
a few weeks (or even days) before being hounded out.

The first pope of the 10th century was Benedict IV (900-03). His
successor, Leo V, reigned for just one month when he was seized and
imprisoned by a usurper, Cardinal Christopher. Meanwhile Cardinal
Sergius who had tried for the papal office some seven years earlier now
tried again. His supporters got both Leo and Christopher murdered and
their leader became Pope Sergius III in 904.

Sergius decided to honour Pope Stephen VII with a handsome epitaph and
to overturn the judgement that had re-instated Pope Formosus’ character.
In fact, Sergius had Formosus, now ten years dead, re-exhumed and
condemned once again. The corpse was then beheaded, three more fingers
cut off and thrown into the river Tiber. The headless body was caught in
a fisherman’s net and returned a second time to St Peter’s.

Interesting, Filo.
India's BJP fanatics should be up in arms - the cow is their god and
their urine is claimed to be a health giving drink, which could replace

attack the Bloomberg researchers.

Most Hindus are plain cowards before whites ready to kiss their shoes.

[Goanet] Modi going to USA to see Biden?

2021-09-04 Thread Eddie D'Sa

It seems that PM Modi has decided to visit the USA.
Wonder why. With his poor comprehension & articulacy of English, how
will he be able to make his point?

He could take interpreters.
So why is he going there? He is perhaps going to make a case for his
Guju pals Adani and Ambani.
And buy a few weapons with which to bash Pakistan and a new enemy, the
Taliban.

In return, Modi may gift Biden
1) a copy of the latest adventures in the Ramayana
2) a couple of cows and possibly a gallon of a health drink like cow
urine.

Subject: [Goanet] VVIP VISITS CANNOT BE CAUSE FOR TRAFFIC CHAOS
While in the midst of the current pandemic and that statewide curfew (or
whatever it means) still in force, Goa braces for the visit of yet
another
VVIP. This time President Ram Nath Kovind who will be here on a three
day

visit from Sept 5th.
The authorities must ensure that the public do not have to endure the
usual

traffic chaos during such visits by VVIPs.
As the Supreme Court has clearly ruled time and again that public roads
cannot be closed even for the movement of VVIP vehicles, the commuting
public should not face a traffic nightmare, while the convoy of the VVIP
merrily weaves its way through.
Every visitor to Goa must be given a warm welcome but not at the cost of
obstructing the vehicular traffic. Such disruption of normal life is
absolutely impermissible.
Closing down roads without making alternative arrangements is in
violation
of the fundamental rights guaranteed to us under Article 14, 19 and 21
of

our Constitution. This indiscriminately blocking of key roads should be
strongly deprecated with the message loud and clear to the VVIPs that
they

are not welcome to Goa if it is to create traffic mayhem.
We are all entitled to lead our normal lives. Every citizen’s time and
respect is as important as that of any VVIP.

[Goanet] CATHOLIC CHURCH TODAY

2021-08-23 Thread Eddie D'Sa
s.

Peter Bird had noted in Renew magazine (Sept 2001):
“Christianity has lost all vigour and purpose, and is hopelessly
divided.

It has reduced largely to a Sunday morning affair.
The clergy are bound into an outdated system that suppresses initiative
and innovation.
Top management, with jobs for life, is remote and inflexible. The laity
are kept subservient.
Communication is top-down. We focus not on the living Lord but on the
old figures of the early church.
The Christian Story – virgin birth, incarnation, original sin, miracles,
transubstantiation etc no longer convince.

Christianity is terminally ill.”

We need radically new people, new theological perspectives, a new vision
to save the church

(End of my letter to the Cardinal)

Eddie D'Sa

APPENDIX added:
1. The western church has always had a cosy relationship with the ruling
classes. That ensures its survival. The establishment in turn feels safe
knowing it will never be prophetically denounced by the Church for
monumental state-made injustices at home & abroad.
When LIBERATION THEOLOGY was promoted by South American bishops in 1968,
the Vatican was alarmed that the Pope's dictatorial approach was at
risk. It promptly discouraged its growth and even sought advice from US
President Reagan.
2. The church authorities do not take racism seriously - even it has
been declared it a mortal sin. They seemingly can only relate to
minorities within Anglocentric structures of domination and control. The
senior clerics remain aloof, secretive and inaccessible to ordinary
parishioners, taking decisions behind closed doors.
3. Vatican documents are heavily Eurocentric and dryly academic but
still deemed to have universal validity for all societies. The
Rome-based leadership is determined to retain its stranglehold.
4. The Western World must urgently be re-evangelized...it has reverted
to paganism and hedonism.

Re: [Goanet] Help a fellow Goan.....

2021-08-10 Thread Eddie D'Sa
own Brown people, instead of
migrating to the capital of imperialism to fully enjoy the comforts and
benefits of that imperialistic system.

 2. Where are the "Browns and Blacks" like Eddie? Do they raise money,
send Petitions and sign Petitions, and support prizes and competitions
as paths to recognition and for preservation of the memory of those who
gave extraordinary service for mankind?

Why don't they make Saints and Patron Saints, give Nobel Prizes and
Pulitzer Prizes, have the Olympics, and other honors and competitions?

If Eddie can tell us where to apply for a similar high honor as
"Patron Saint" to be given by Browns and Blacks, we'll be happy to apply
for one for St. Joseph Vaz.

 3. Until he and other Browns and Blacks can do that, we are left to
participate in a white establishment system of publishing, movies,
competitions, and honors and get the Nobel Prize of Sainthood, the
Patron Saint title, for one of the most outstanding and brilliant Goans
- not just most saintly - that ever lived.

My question to Eddie and those who think like him is: would you also
tell Goans not to support a fellow Goan who is nominated for the Nobel
Prize, because it is established and funded by whites, or compete in the
Olympic Games which was established by whites?

We don't see any Browns and Blacks boycotting the Nobel Prize or the
Olympic Games so far. Why should we boycott the "Patron Saint" honor
for one of our own?

 4. Another twist to this argument is that what we we're doing is
getting the White Establishment to in effect honor and recognize the
achievements of a Saint of Color:

By forcing the whites to recognize him, we're highlighting that they
did the exact opposite of what he did, USE FORCE and CRUEL EXPLOITATION
to spread the Gospel. He gave alms, he didn't touch or accept money
even for Masses. Making him a "Patron Saint" brings to the world's
attention that, unlike the whites, he came without arms and colonial
power to plunder and kill, he recognized the high worth and civilization
of us Browns and Blacks, our languages, our traditional names, our
literature, our unique spiritual path of Yogic renunciation and
Meditation, and integrated them into the Gospel message of unconditional
love.

 5. Thanks to Adolfo for saying that he cares for the memory of our
Brown Saint Joseph Vaz and supports our initiative. My sister and I
have been working for the just recognition of our Brown St. Joseph Vaz,
and asked for recognition of his Goan Oratorian Companions, some Sri
Lankan lay Catholics who helped him, our Martyrs of Cuncolim since 1978.
George has worked with us since the year 2000 when we petitioned for his
Canonization for the Grand Jubilee of Christendom in its 2000th Year.
Jesuit Fr. Olvin Veigas S.J. from Mangalore has given his wholehearted
help since 2016.

But there has been next to help and support from our fellow Brown
Catholics.

It is very difficult because the main job of our own local Church
leadership is to promote white saints. St. Joseph Vaz takes a back
seat in their thinking and not the front seat in the brainwashing of the
faithful.

It is very difficult to get a Brown saint recognized when the Goan
faithful and other people of color are promoting white saints and models
of sanctity and spirituality, celebrating their feasts with great gusto
while ignoring our own Brown saints.

 6. Eddie may not realize that until someone in the white leadership
recognizes St. Joseph Vaz and tells the Browns and Whites that it's O.K.
to venerate him as a Saint and a Patron Saint, our own Browns and Blacks
won't recognize him either.

Eddie is blaming us, the only people trying to go against this system
of brainwashing?

If we stopped promoting our Brown and Black Saints, where would they
be? Where would we Brown and Black people like you and me be?

Completely in the dustbin of history?

 7. We have powers of observation and common sense. We observe that
we can get recognition for St. Joseph Vaz only from the white system and
establishment.

We can't get any recognition for St. Joseph Vaz from any Brown and
Black quarters because none exists.

No Eddie d'Sa is going to stop us from getting that recognition and
having his memory celebrated in the only system of world history we
know.

 8. Meanwhile we appeal to Goans to follow the response of Adolfo who
gets the point, and support our Petition with Signatures from Goans
worldwide.

If you already signed the petition, thank you. If you have not, only 15
seconds of your time can help a fellow Goan. Please sign the petition to
Pope Francis at this link https://josephnaikvaz.org/ (the petition is
half-way down the page).
Your signature to our Petition - and your help in collecting signatures
today by forwarding to others and posting on social media - can make the
difference as to whether or not Saint Vaz is made Patron Saint.
We have petitioned Pope Francis, asking that St. Joseph Vaz be made
"Patron Saint of First Responders" because of his care of the abandoned
victims of the smallpox epidemic in seventeenth century.

I notice that Adolfo endorses your petition. I am afraid I don't.
This is 2021 and we (the Browns and Blacks) are still begging the (Holy)
Whites for favours.
And what pathetic favours! "Making Vaz Patron Saint of First
Responders."
Who has cooked up this title? Hardly a Goan, I guess. Must be some Holy
White guy.
We Goans still seem helpless to move forward without approval from the
Whites - even in the spiritual realm.

George & Adolf - let's drop our self-imposed inferiority . I say again -
it is 2021.
Why are Goans still cowering before the Whites? They have become used to
our subservience over the ages and expect the same attitude.
Take this Pope Francis fellow.. He claims to come from Argentina. He is
merely an Italian who (or his ancestors) migrated to that region of
South America for better prospects.
And what did these Euro migrants do when they encountered the Natives
(Indians they called them):
They systematically slaughtered them, children and all - this is all
recorded by scientist Charles Darwin who was travelling in the region at
the time.
Pope Francis should publicly tell us about the origins of Argentina and
apologise but will he? These holy White s rarely do.

For that matter, the US Anglos slaughtered some 50 million of the US
Natives and then grabbed the entire land & turned it into Europe 2.
Please read the book "The New Age of Empire" by Prof K Andrews (2021) to
learn more.
In Australia, the Anglos did the same thing: slaughtered the Natives and
grabbed the whole continent.

The Whites have always been driven by Greed and Racism.
-
May I move on to the main Catholic periodicals of the West?
They are the National Catholic Reporter, a US weekly and the Tablet, UK
weekly.
I have been in touch with both and over the years I noticed that the
Editorial Boards of both periodicals are entirely WHITE.

For both, Catholic means white and mostly IRISH.
I have requested the Editors to recognise black and brown Catholics and
appoint non-white editors but they won't even respond !!
The Tablet even calls itself an "International Catholic Weekly" - there
is little international news in the weekly and I pointed this out but
they are not moved and won't answer.

And there is our George Pinto begging the Holy Whites in Rome to make
our Fr Vaz a Patron Saint!!

In conclusion, I 'd like to propose that GoaNet be re-structured into
two Parts: Goa-based items (with the traditional nostalgic/historical

Re: [Goanet] US bombing of Hiroshima: 75th Anniversary

2021-08-07 Thread Eddie D'Sa
Adolfo's account of the 75th Hiroshima Anniversary was disappointingly
sketchy.

Of course, none of us were there at the time but a lot has been written.

Here are snippets from an essay written in 2005 (60th Anniversary):

file:///C:/Users/Eddie/Desktop/COUNTRIES%20&%20ISSUES/JAPAN/Hiroshima%20&%20Nagasaki%20(6-9%20Aug%2045)%2060th%20Anniversary.htm

At 8:15 a.m. August 6, 1945, an American B-29 warplane, named the Enola
Gay bombed Hiroshima, a Japanese city with a population of 255,000. The
atomic bomb , killed 80,000 people—30 percent of the
population—immediately or within hours of the explosion.
Three days later, on August 9, a similar plane carrying a more powerful
weapon flew on to its second target, Nagasaki, a heavily industrialized
city of about 270,000. The bomb missed the city center and the effects
were slightly less devastating. An estimated 40,000 people were killed
outright.
Over the next several months, tens of thousands more died from their
injuries, including radiation sickness caused by the nuclear devices.
While exact figures involving such magnitudes are inherently difficult
to come by, estimates of the total number of men, women and children
killed within four months of the two blasts range from 200,000 to
350,000. Never before had such devastation been wrought so quickly.

--

Notice that Truman decided to bomb the Japanese and not the Germans,
fellow Europeans. It was surely a race-based decision.

--
A more recent essay by J Hornberger on 06 Aug 2021 on precisely the 76th
Anniversary: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/56699.htmHere are
snippets:Japan had expressed a willingness to surrender. The only
condition was

that the Japanese emperor not be abused or executed.
President Truman refused to agree to that condition. Like his
predecessor Franklin Roosevelt, Truman demanded “unconditional
surrender.”

That was why Japan continued fighting. Japanese officials naturally
assumed that U.S. officials were going to do some very bad things to
their
emperor, including torture and execution. In the minds of Japanese
officials,
why else would the United States not be willing to agree to that one
condition,
especially given that it would have meant the end of the war? The dark
irony is that Truman ended up accepting the condition anyway,
only after he pulverized the people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki with
nuclear bombs.

The US FIREBOMBS TOKYO in 1945

Source: 05 March, 2013 Countercurrents.org
On the night of March 9-10, 1945, General Curtis LeMay, head of the
Twenty-first U.S. Bomber Command, brought an all-American brand of hell
into the Pacific theater as his bombardiers laid siege on Tokyo.
Tightly packed wooden buildings were assaulted by 1,665 tons of
incendiaries. LeMay later recalled that a few explosives had been mixed
in with the incendiaries to demoralize firefighters (96 fire engines
burned to ashes, 88 firemen died).
One Japanese doctor recalled “countless bodies” floating in the Sumida
River. These bodies were “as black as charcoal” and beyond
identification. The total dead for one night was an estimated 85,000,
with 40,000 injured and one million left homeless.
This was only the first strike in a firebombing campaign that dropped
250 tons of bombs per square mile, destroying 40 percent of the surface
area in 66 death-list cities (including Hiroshima and Nagasaki).
By design, the Tokyo attack area was 87.4 percent residential and it is
believed that more people died from fire in a six-hour time period than
ever before in the history of mankind.
Read that again: By design, the Tokyo attack area was 87.4 percent
residential.
At ground zero, the temperature reached 1,800° Fahrenheit. Flames from
the ensuing inferno were visible for 200 miles. Due to the intense heat,
canals boiled over, metals melted, and human beings burst spontaneously
into flames.
By May 1945, 75 percent of the bombs being dropped on Japan were
incendiaries. Cheered on by the likes of Time magazine—who explained
that “properly kindled, Japanese cities will burn like autumn
leaves”—the U.S. bombing campaign took an estimated 672,000 lives,
mostly civilians.
Read that again: The U.S. bombing campaign took an estimated 672,000
lives, mostly civilians.
Radio Tokyo called such tactics “slaughter bombing” and the Japanese
press declared that through the fire raids, “America has revealed her
barbaric character… It was an attempt at mass murder of women and
children… The action of the Americans is all the more despicable because
of the noisy pretensions they constantly make about their humanity and
idealism… No one expects war to be anything but a brutal business, but
it remains for the Americans to make it systematically and unnecessarily
a wholesale horror for innocent victims.”

[Goanet] Catholic Church in Canada failed to pay reparations to survivors of the native residential schools

2021-07-29 Thread Eddie D'Sa

Catholic church spent millions meant for Canada residential school
victims on lawyers & expenses – court documents seen by media

https://www.rt.com/news/530584-catholic-church-millions-residential-school-victims/
Millions of dollars that were supposed to go to Canadian residential
school survivors as part of a 2005 settlement were reportedly spent by
the Catholic Church on lawyers, fundraising, administration costs and
unapproved loans.

At least 150,000 indigenous children were forced to attend some 140
residential schools across the country, which were funded by the federal
government and run by churches. The children had been forcibly taken
from their families in order to strip them of their cultural identity.
Under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA)
between the Canadian federal government, indigenous representatives and
the various church bodies that operated the schools, more than Can$3
billion (US$2.4 billion) has been paid to compensate survivors, as of
March 2021.
While the other churches have apparently paid their amounts-due in full,
the Catholic Church has failed to meet its quota. Besides being required
to make a lump cash payment of Can$29 million (US$23.2 million) and
provide Can$25 million (US$ 20 million) of “in-kind services,” the
church was to give its “best efforts” to raise Can$25 million (US$20
million) for survivors.
The church had claimed to have paid most of the cash amount and
fulfilled its “in-kind services” commitment. In 2015, it invoked the
“best efforts” clause in court where a judge absolved it of the legal
obligation to pay the remaining unpaid sum of $21 million (US$16.8
million) from that fundraising campaign.
In recent weeks, it has emerged that the church was able to raise around
$300 million (US$240 million) for construction and renovation projects
during the same time period that it claimed it could only raise a total
of $3.9 million (US$3.1 million) for residential school survivors.
Now, court documents accessed by CBC news reportedly contradict the
church’s claims. A federal government “factum” document that summarized
the evidence from the 2015 court case pointed to “a large number of
serious accounting discrepancies that are alarming to Canada.”
The church had also not filed its mandatory annual financial statements
to the government until 2012 – five years after IRSSA went into effect
in 2007, according to the documents seen by the CBC.
From the Can$29-million cash payment, some $2.7 million (US$2.1
million) was reportedly paid to lawyers and an additional $2.3 million
(US$1.84 million) was spent on administration expenses – something no
other church group claimed.
As well, Can$1.6 million (US$1.28 million) was claimed as donations made
to projects related to indigenous issues. These projects were not
covered in the approval process and no explanation or invoices have
reportedly been provided to back these claims.
ALSO ON RT.COMCanadian indigenous leaders call for ‘racist’ Manitoba
province government to be TOPPLED if it doesn’t address community issues

The church’s accountant testified that it had provided the Can$25
million of “in-kind services” but he had admitted that he relied only on
“minutes of meetings” supplied by church officials.
As for the Can$25-million fundraising campaign that eventually only
raised $3.9 million, the accountant told the court that many donations
came with a “string attached” that instructed him on where to put the
money. This was, again, apparently contrary to the agreement.
Federal government lawyers had also asked the judge to declare the
church had not fulfilled its obligations and order an independent review
of the expenses, among other recommendations.
However, ahead of the 2015 hearing on the case, the judge approved a
controversial $1.2 million (US$962,418) church buyout proposal and the
case was closed without it having to justify any expenditure.

Court officials recently declined to make that 2015 court document
public. The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, which represents
First Nations communities in Saskatchewan province, claimed this refusal
was an example of “systemic racism.”

---
Like most Euro institutions, the Catholic Church has been consistently
racist when dealing with Brown & Black Catholics.
In India and Africa, the front pews were reserved for white
parishioners, even though they were so few of them.
At the end of Sunday Mass, prayers were held for the conversion of
Russia, not for the end of the racist colonialism practised by the
Christians nations of the West.
Meanwhile, in 2021 the Euro high clerics in the EU (especially Germany)
and the US continue to be lost in child sex abuse.

I see that you agree with the term 'cultural genocide', a term used by the

You say that the children died of loneliness, inadequate care, harsh discipline
or disease but were not directly killed.
How would you know what really happened without proper investigation or
testimony?
The Anglos are masters with their language English, at inventing categories
that can absolve themselves from blame.

Children were separated from their families, some of them as young as three.
Can you imagine the trauma suffered by the children, deprived of the warmth and
close contact with their parents? And what of teen girls in their menstrual
years? Did they receive adequate comfort and protection?
In the schools, children were forbidden to speak their language or practice
their own culture. Many children also suffered physical and sexual abuse. Over
150,000 children passed through the school system and the last school was
closed as recently as 1996.

“I told him how important it is for Canadians to move forward on real
reconciliation with the indigenous peoples and I highlighted how he could help
by issuing an apology,” Trudeau told reporters after meeting the pope in Rome.

PM Justin Trudeau admitted that that successive Canadian governments "have
failed" indigenous people and promised to outline a "national action plan" to
tackle the violence.

As for the holy man of the Europe, Pope Francis said he was pained but refused
to apologise. Is there were legal implications, should a top religious leader
fear and dodge them? After all, he has accepted the titles Supreme Pontiff and
Vicar of Christ. How could Christ's Vicar be a weakling and coward?
In any case, do clerical or government apologies mean anything without return
of vast stolen land and payment of trillions of dollars in reparations? Were
any of the white priests and nuns punished?

[Goanet] All about the WORD

2020-06-16 Thread Eddie D'Sa
Mr Argham continues to regale and confuse us with gems from his Bible, the
alleged inspired word of the Christian God.
Here are his recent quotes from John 1:1-4 & 14:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be.
4. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the
human race;
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,...
===
It reads like a lot of garbage and Mr Argham does not elucidate. When a message
is posted, it is meant to educate, enlighten, edify.
But Mr Argham does not explain. Perhaps as a traditional Goan, he fears to
offend the Euro clerics who composed & authorised the text.
So what to do? He could ask a knowledgeable person, perhaps a senior local
cleric. How about Goa’s good Bishop? Will he engage with mere laymen?

More than once, I had tried to elicit some comment and had copied a post to the
Bishop. HE never responded.
May be he fears he cannot offer his own views without consulting the Vatican.
I am trying again.

So dear Archbishop (or your assistant), could you kindly explain the four above
verses?

Mr Argham, you do dig up some weird injunctions.

Phew. Sounds like a prescription to nourish a society of vampires and cannibals.

John 6:54-56, 58 -Jesus the WORD of God, became flesh

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise
him on the last day.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.
Whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

[Goanet] Renaming India Bharat

2020-06-05 Thread Eddie D'Sa
I am not surprised that John Gomes was disturbed by some nationalist attempt to
rename India Bharat.
This name ‘Bharat’ taken from the hero of a Hindu epic may appease the Hindu
majority but mean nothing to the minorities (some 200m Muslims, Christians).
This lack of sensitivity to non-Hindu sentiment is characteristic of the
BJPwalas & their coarse leader Modi.
When Hindu nationalists want to demonstrate transformation, they can only do so
at a crude level, typically by changing names of towns or streets or erecting
tall statues to mediocrities. One such a statue was intended for Sardar Patel
but the Hindus did not have the technical skills and had to call in the Chinese
to build it.

To expand on this issue, it’s worth noting that historically Hindustan has
never excelled in the intellectual domain: high level discourse, critical
thinking, innovation or invention. [What a difference Shashi Tharoor as PM
would make.]
Way back in the 11th century (c.1020), Persian scholar Al-Biruni who
accompanied the first major Muslim invader Mahmud of Ghazni, made a study of
Hindu society and he was not impressed. He wrote: “The scientific ideas of the
Hindus are utterly confused and devoid of any logical order...they do not seem
to understand the methods of a strictly scientific deduction.”
[See Islamic Civilisation in South Asia by Burjor Avari, Routledge 2013]
Some five centuries later, the first Mughal Emperor Babur revealed in his
famous Memoirs c.1530 that he too found Hindustan backward in most respects.

Intellectual production remains poor to this day and more so under the BJP
regime. In the absence of creativity, BJP officials have succumbed to the
temptation to plagiarise even foreign material into Indian government documents
& journals and pass it as one’s own. The brilliant watchdog site Altnews.in has
discovered several BJP transgressions.
Examples:

  1. The Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways website has been
shamelessly using pictures of US and Canadian roadways!
  2. The Home Ministry Annual Report 2016-17 copied the image of the
Spain-Morocco floodlit border to pass off as the India-Pak border.
[Pity that images cannot be shown on GoaNet.]

[Goanet] US turmoil: Church clerics more concerned about the protests than race killing

2020-06-03 Thread Eddie D'Sa
According to the UK Catholic weekly Tablet,
https://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/13005/pope-criticises-destructive-violence-of-floyd-protest
“we recognise the efforts by people of great power to divide us, opposed to the
plan God has for this world...
“[Cardinal Tobin of New Jersey] the murder of George Floyd, the needless deaths
of so many people of colour, the exploitation of social division for political
gain simply take our breath away ...
“Cardinal Cupich of Chicago said he had spent the last few nights ‘in great
personal pain, horrified at the violence...

https://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/13005/pope-criticises-destructive-violence-of-floyd-protests
“Pope Francis spoke of his great concern at the disturbing social unrest
following the tragic death of George Floyd.
“we cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form
“At the same time, we recognize that the violence of recent nights is
‘self-destructive and self-defeating’.
The Pope prayed for the repose of George’s soul and of others and through the
sin of racism.

Note that the Pope or Bishops will not criticize western leaders like Trump or
condemn police brutality. They never go through the specific horrors of racism
experienced by brown & black people for centuries.
They always resort to banal or abstract terms in describing the crimes of the
white authorities. For the clerics, racism is just a ‘sin’.
The Church itself has been openly racist in India and Africa. For example,
white people were given seating preference at Wodehouse Church in Bombay or at
the Holy Family Church in Nairobi.
Pope John Paul did not hesitate to call Saddam Hussein a terrorist but not US
President Bush who destroyed Iraq on fake evidence.
The fact is that the Western Church is part of the Western scheme of global
control.
The former Jesuit scholar, Stan Lourdesamy explained neatly why the Vatican is
lukewarm on social justice issues.
"The efforts of the Vatican to quench the cry of oppressed people must be
historically situated in its true political context. From 1976, the Vatican has
been trying to discredit Liberation Theology (which is about the struggles of
the poor against the forces of oppression) and has been pressing bishops to
condemn particular theologians… The hierarchical church of which the Vatican is
the apex cannot tolerate any initiative (like Lib Theo) that bypasses its
authoritarian power structure.
It is suspicious of anything that springs from the life experience of the
people… Their struggles have to be ignored.

“The Vatican is much more at home with liberal capitalism.
It is a major shareholder in several national and multinational corporations of
the West. The Catholic hierarchy, by way of properties owned and money at its
disposal, is a rich church among poor people of the Third World. Given this
economic base, it has to function according to the logic of capitalism… For
this reason the Vatican can only point out general facts about mass poverty,
injustice or inequality but cannot name those responsible.
It is ready to find fault with socialism but cannot censure the capitalists for
exploiting the working classes… "

That says it all.

Thoughtful of you, Roland, to bring up the question of upgrading Goa Net.
FN has nursed his baby since 1994 and it has attracted a huge variety of Goans,
local and overseas.
All sort of topics have been covered. Literature has perhaps been a special
interest but there is also the popular Book Club.
Though the Book Club is focused on Literature, it is has one great advantage
over GoaNet in that it accepts posts in a wide variety of formats whereas
GoaNet, like a poor cousin, can only accept text.
That means, for example, that you cannot have an image in GoaNet or bold text.
This is an odd unfortunate aberration and I hope it can be corrected.

[Goanet] The Lord's hand & ears; our sins & iniquities

2020-05-27 Thread Eddie D'Sa
More quotes from Mr Argham,
1 Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear
dull, that it cannot hear;
2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your
sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.

Mr Arghan, what language is this? Can you translate in today’s English please?
Or ask the guys in frocks at the Vatican.
And why the constant focus on sins? Why is your God so easily offended?
And why do you hesitate to offer your own views, instead of hiding behind the
printed word??

Dear Mr Argham:
In your latest quote, Your Lord advises his followers to rejoice always, no
matter what.
He seems unaware that the corona pandemic is raging and has killed thousands of
people the world over.
Your Lord seems to be a pretty heartless fellow but you of course wouldn’t know.
You mechanically select passages from the Bible, constructed and authorized by
the holy white guys of the Vatican. And of course, as a good Catholic, you
wouldn’t dare challenge any passage or make comments of your own.

[Goanet] MORE BIBLE CRAP

2020-05-02 Thread Eddie D'Sa
What’s the matter with this resident Bible scholar, Devak Argham, as he goes
about splashing weird quotes from his Bible before an unsuspecting audience?
Here are the latest passage are from: John 8:43-44

43 Why do you not understand what I am saying? Because you cannot bear to hear
my word.

44 You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out your
father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in
truth, because there is no truth in him.

These sound like the ravings of a madman.
It is only fair to ask what these verses mean. Does Devak himself understand?
Not all of us are as bright as Devak Argham is. Who is the ‘I’ referred to? Is
it Jesus and what is the context?
Then the speaker of the passages goes berserk and talks of some devil. The
father of his audience is identified as the devil and is vilified as ‘murderer’
and a liar.
Mr Argham, please explain this holy crap that you are spreading.
