Thanks I too remember St Joseph's Convent, as I was in Belgaum
St.Pauls for a few years.
Yes I remember Mother Rose, we had our catechism classes in St
Joseph's convent. and
How can we forget stoning the papayas from the side of the road :)
The maidan was on the other side of the convent that was called
Muslim Dargah. Some memories indeed.

[Goanet] Did this article of Domnic appear on Goanet?

2020-06-04 Thread Edward Verdes
I remember back in those years, Domnic Fernandes used to post many articles
on tiatrist singers with their lyrics. The same was also posted or
copied on another
forum Gulf-Goans. I came across one article which was in the Mail Archive of
Gulf Goans, but could not find the archive of Goanet.
The subject of this article is as follows:
Lyrics of Konkani songs by the late JuJu - "SAUD" ani "MHAKA JIENK ZAI"!
https://www.mail-archive.com/gulf-goans@yahoogroups.com/msg02520.html

I posted one of the songs Mhaka Jienk Zai link from youtube in
my facebook group and also added the link with lyrics of late Juju
There was immediate response and producer of the album
informed me that there was a big mistake in this article. The lyrics
and song was sung
by another tiatrist singer Jose Juju Barretto from Navelim who is
still living, and the one
Domnic mentioned in this article is Saxophonist tiatr musician who passed away.
I have now requested Gulf-Goans to remove this article as its misleading.
surely Domnic got mixed up with both the Juju's

Re: [Goanet] Jurament (An Oath)

2020-05-29 Thread Edward Verdes
Thanks Roland but the singers name in the video is not given.

The song is actually a Kant from M.Boyers Tiatr 'Adim Tem Antam Hem'
the story based on 'Tiklem' girl.
I remember having watched this tiatr and Antonette singing the kant
but in this video version they have changed some words.
eg Gulfantlea duddvanim was actually Bahrainchea Libranim
and last line was 'Chittir boroilam tem maka Ponnje dokhear kiteak
sanglemnam'
I have the lyrics of the song on my blog as it was sung by Antonette. It
was popular song
those days and was sung for picnics etc.
https://edskantaram.blogspot.com/2020/05/hits-of-80s.html

This was also confirmed to me by one Sarah Medeira, who acted in place
of Antonette in Nairobi in 1973, when M.Boyer and C.Alvares had the show
there.

Ghantt - was the 11th (NonStop show) Tiatr of Roseferns, and late

in this tiatr) sang this song as the Opening Chorus in the shows that
were held in Goa.
Some years later Roseferns Produced his first Audio Cassette 'Ageema'

chorus of his many other tiatrs.
Bab Peter, Ophelia and Babli used to also act in Roseferns tiatrs.

Re: [Goanet] {Goanet} Finding Mogacho Aunddo-Cortubancho Sounsar

2020-05-18 Thread Edward Verdes
Linken,
Probably you were right, your grand-uncle Manuel Alphonso did provide
music for 2 films but not Mogacho Aunddo or Bhuierantlo Munis
it was Sukhachem Sopon and Cortubancho Sounsar.
https://konkanicinema.com/movie/kortubancho-sonvsar/

The details of Mogacho Aunddo was fresh in my mind as I recently (Konkani
Cinema Day celebrated on 24th April) posted on FB details about this film.
Also I pvtly asked Idsidore Dantas, who has done research on Konkani cinema
more details about this film as I was aware he was working on this film.
He did provide me some details, but the completion details is
with family of Al Jerry Braganza.

On Manuel Alphonso
Those days a lot of info was posted on Goanet on Konkani Music.
I cam across this post on Manuel Alphonso
https://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg79850.html
Since I am into collection of Konkani songs, I came to know that Manuel
produced 4 audio albums, of which I have only 2, that is
1. Goa and 2. Saudades de Goa.
I also came to know that Alfred Rose was a close friend of Manuel and
and on his 50th Wedding Anniversary Alfred Rose Composed a song
'Ponos Voros Sarlim'. I am not sure if Alfred Rose sang it but its in
Album 'Saudades de Goa'.
Both these CD's have the best of Traditional Goan Mandos.
I understand Manuel Alphonso had also published a book with lyrics
of all the songs, not sure anyone has the copy.

Here are some of the songs from Sukhachem Sopon
3 of the songs lyrics were by Alfred Rose

[Goanet] Alfred Rose and his Kantaram

2020-04-25 Thread Edward Verdes
In below article Valmiki says that Alfred Rose penned hundreds of songs
he sang a few hundred with his familybut he says MOST songs
were sung by others. I tend to disagree with Valmiki on this,
as per my view and the collection that I have very few of Alfis songs
(maybe 50)were sung by others, and he also sang not more than 50 songs
composed by others. If Valmiki is still on goanet, I would like to ask him,
who were the other
artistes who sang Alfis songs.

Edward Verdes

https://goanet-news.goanet.narkive.com/VKd1CO0O/goanet-reader-goan-music-a-long-twisted-and-often-colourful-road-across-time-valmiki-faleiro-herald
Goanet Reader -- Goan music: a long, twisted, and often colourful road
across time (Valmiki Faleiro, Herald)

Alfred Rose must be the most prolific of Konknni 'cantarists'
(singers). He wrote and sang so many songs that he lost count
of them. No chronicler can fix the number of 'cantaram' he
penned. He set most of them to music himself, sang a few
hundred, solo or in duet with wife Rita, or others. Most,
however, were sung by other artistes.

Alfred did a wide variety of songs, from serious to
satirical, melodic to mournful. Like Alexinho de Candolim
before him, many of his songs carried a strong social
message, even if at times he sounded like a Sunday 'sermao.'

Some despised the nasal in his otherwise versatile
soprano voice. And, even though original most of
the time, Alfred sometimes borrowed popular Western
tunes. But, as one of his greatest fans and my
friend Filipe Dias of Madel-Margao says, "Alfred's
music was customer-oriented. When fans requested
him to set songs to particular Western tunes,
Alfred obliged."

Tips Music has uploaded the album 'Soul of Goa' of Oslando.
The song titles are not correct, but I have tried to correct in
comments where possible.
One song is missing 'Sasumaichem Lonchem' (Humorous Folk Song) and
another one is repeated. It is possible that the original cassette
itself did not have this song, but the song is available in Oslandos
'Boas Festas' Album.

Album was also uploaded by Gana: https://gaana.com/album/soul-of-goa

Cassette details with singers names:

About Oslando:
https://www.geni.com/people/Oslando-Anthony-Xavier-de-Souza/600043429591209

A few years back a Goan wrote to me from Australia asking me if I had
a particular album of Mandos. She wrote that her dad, who was himself
a singer and used to sing on AIR used to listen to this cassette every Sunday,
and everyone at home liked those songs.
Now there are so many Konkani audio cassettes, its difficult to guess
which cassette
she was referring to. So I asked her if she remembers any Mando, singers name
etc. She did not remember the singers or album title but she said the
cassette cover had a scenery with coconut trees. I figured out she was
referring to Oslandos 'Soul of Goa' which had
similar cover, released by Oriental Melodies in 1978.
How many of you remember this audio cassette?

'Goa With Love' was released in 1992.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kzOQJ8zES-E0ZO-eSJNn3NYUDyiy9AzcY

I realized that Domnic bab must have the compiled the lyrics from the two
songs in this album.
However while uploading the songs Tips music has not titled the songs
correctly. I presume
Domnic bab still has the cassette or album Inlay to rename the remaining 12
songs.
Does anyone have Domnic babs contact, as the mobile number which I have is
no longer valid
even email there is no response.

Thanks in advance for the info..

[Goanet] How many songs has Alfred Rose actually sung?

2019-11-14 Thread Edward Verdes
http://epaper.navhindtimes.in/NewsDetail.aspx?storyid=10904=2019-11-10=1
How many songs has Alfred Rose actually sung? by Fred Noronha.

Reference to article by Fred on Navhind epaper of 10th Nov.
Alfred Rose Songs.
Well it is really difficult to guess how many songs Alfred Rose has
sung, or for that matter any Konkani tiatrist or Radio singer, as none
of them have kept their work.
However Alfred had kept most of his work, which is now in Central
Library. Some of his songs maybe still with his wife Rita Rose.
Now coming back to 5000 songs of Alfred Rose, I dont think Alfred Rose
has composed and sung 5000 songs, at the most I can say 1500-2000
songs. This figure is based on my search for his songs, though Fred
said is 519, I have documented around 650 songs as of 2019 - this is
40 audio albums have finally been found that is approx 350 songs,
(minus the repeats in albums) then take another 50 songs he sang for
others albums. Then it is said that he produced/sang in 70 Vinyl
records, details of which are not available but I have so far found
26 records (record names with pictures and details), take 200 songs.
In all as of now we have so far documented approx close to 650-700
songs. Add another 600 songs which he sang for tiatrs, for radio
stations, etc etc these were not recorded, or still add another 500 of
his English songs...so say roughly around 2000 songs even though It is
said he has 6 decades of singing career.
I don't know how they got the exact figure of 5000 songs? This is
possible only if he sang and composed 80 songs each year n through out
his career or they counted the number of times he sang the song. eg if
he sang Celina, 100 times, and rest of the tiatr songs having 40-50
shows then its possible to come to 5000 songs.
My search for Alfred Rose songs started after his death, many of the
songs information I got thru the Facebook Page Alfred Rose Fan Group.
I have also documented them in my page.
I am still working on a revised version, which will have details of
the song viz correct title name, album name, singers n composers name
etc.

Regarding Isidore Dantas and his new Book - Alfred Rose - The King of Melody.
Dantas bab has done a lot of work on this book, but still needs to
edit or make changes when he comes out with the English Version. He
should stress more on the songs part, there are some mistakes in the
title of songs, then there are not much details of vinyl records
provided. Details of 26 records with pictures are available with me,
which is mostly taken from online sites as discogs etc. There were
around 10 booklets which Alfred produced with his most popular songs
Lyrics, this is also not to seen in the Book. The Alfred Rose website
is closed, and that part also need to be corrected. If one goes thru
the Alfred Rose Fan Group page, you will find a lot more information
with pictures etc. Besides that I have put a lot of information on my
Blog which is updated from time to time. Below are the links to the
pages.

Teaching Children Konkani in Roman Script a Must: Fr. Gabriel Coutinho
Konkani Awareness Programme held in Vasco

Vasco: ‘It is time that we teach our children Konkanni in Roman script and
Dalgado Konknni Akademi must take the leadership in this great work’ said Fr.
Gabriel Coutinho, parish priest of St. Andrew’s church, Vasco. He was speaking
as the chief guest at the Konkanni Awareness programme organised by DKA on
September 30, 2018 at St. Andrew’s hall, Vasco. The President of Dalgado
Konkani Akademi, Tomazinho Cardozo, Secretary Vincy Quadros and Treasurer
Celso Fernandes were on the dais with Fr. Gabriel.
We had called many but congratulated those who made it as they have an
opportunity to learn something new, Fr. Gabriel added. Empathetic of the
importance of the programme, Fr. Gabriel expressed his happiness and said if
this sort of teaching is given to the children then our younger generation would
be able to learn the language better. Especially when the Roman script is used
in
all religious services and activities, it is imperative that DKA share this
programme with the children., Fr. Gabriel added. DKA President, Tomazinho
Cardozo said that the Academy is fully appraised of this need and is work is on
in this regard.
Fr. Gabriel and his assistant, Fr. Camilo were present for the entire programme
where the method of writing, reading and using Konkanni in our day to day lives
was shared with the audience. Nearly 100 people attended the programme.

DKA Working Committee member, Daniel F. D’Souza worked tirelessly to make
this event a success. DKA Treasurer, Celso Fernandes concluded by thanking the

There was this “Adios LORNA” Show on November 11, 2017 in Mississauga,
(Toronto) Canada!...if am not mistaken was this show supposed to be
last show
of Lorna in Canda?

Lorna still sings Chris Perrys old songs, but she also adds
new songs of Neves Oliveira and late Lawrence de Tiracols Albums.

If one watches the Goencho Avaz competitions, you will find there
are many new singers who sing Chris Perry's songs and many a times
its Chris Perrys songs which have given them top awards.

For Lorna's shows it has to be only Lorna singing her songs.
other singers are not allowed to sing her songs, thats what I noticed.

Re: [Goanet] GOANET : HERALD'S E-PAPER TO GO PAID

2018-01-07 Thread Edward Verdes
Dear all,
The last time herald had gone paid, I subscribed for one month with payments
done online, however next day the paper was free and I did not have to login in.

Now once again they have gone paid. I was trying to subscribe for 1 month
but the billing is bit complicated. I am in Mumbai at present on
holidays and will be
going back to Saudi Arabia. after 20 days, can I make payments thru net banking
in india with Indian and address, and will I be able to login in once
I go back to Saudi?

Another thing the older online version was quite easier, but this one
seems to be different.
will we get more of Advertisements for the online version.

Hope someone replies.

Thanks

Stephen Bab,
Looks like that vsl will be there for some time, the owners did
nothing to avoid this
and looks like its a perfect beaching of the vessel.

The vessel will sinking deeper and one JCB cant do anything. There
seems to be no objections
from NIO or any other land protection agencies...and I think the only
solution will be to
let it stay there or cut the vessel. There are chances the vsl may
break even if they try
to tow it, since its an older vessel.

Cruz Noronha Alias Cruz Jazzwala by Fausto Visitacao DaCosta

Another multi-faceted personality of Siolim: A Musician, composer,
Tiatrist, Zagor Artiste and above all a Mando composer with a
difference, whose MANDOS are sung by Goans and Mangaloreans as well
till today for any celebration.

CRUZ NORONHA alias CRUZ JAZZWALA: 03.05.1910 – 10.02.1974
Baptista Cruz Noronha known as Cruz Jazzwala in the Konkani Music and
Tiatr circle was born in Siolim, Bardez on May 3, 1910. He learnt
music in his village parochial school and was found to be a very
bright student of music.
At the age of twelve Cruz would compose his own songs and sing. He
taught the village youngsters to act in khell and zagor. He was a
zagor artiste and would compose songs for zagor and also produce and
perform in zagor. One of his famous zagors was PIXEANCHEM KAZAR.

In 1929 when he came to Mumbai to pursue his studies in English, he
got an opportunity to stage his first concert in Instituto Luso
Indiano (I L I) now The Goan Institute Hall, Mumbai. J P Souzalin
spotted him here and gave him a role of a female character in one of
his tiatrs. Cruz was looking very pretty and he performed the role to
the best of his ability. He was appreciated very much for his
performance. Thereafter Cruz has performed for many directors, like
Rogaciano D’Souza, Anthony D’Sa, Souza Ferrão, Minguel Rod, etc. to
name a few.

Cruz was an excellent composer of Mando and dulpods. Around 1934 he
recorded his Mandos on HMV Records and these Mandos became so popular
that some of his Mandos are still being played often on All India
Radio, one among them is MHOZO POTI BOMBAIM GELA. HMV company alone
had recorded around 40 Mandos of this great artiste on record discs.
His most famous mandos are: ANGVONN, JURAMENT, NIRMONN DEVACHEM,
HOSPITTOLACHIE KHATTIR, BAR NHIDIECHO, KAZARACHEA MATTVANT, etc.
besides MHOZO POTI BOMBAIM GELA.

Cruz’s most popular tiatr was ZAGOR. His other famed tiatrs are: MOGAN
KAZAR, SUKHI ZOIT, JIVIT ODRUXTTI, DOTH DIUNCHI OKLEK NHOI NOUREAK,
POSUNK GHODDDONAM etc.

Thereafter Cruz began playing for Tiatrs. He has provided music for
many tiatrs. Besides drums, he would play many musical instruments
such as violin, trumpet, guitar, Double Bass, etc. He led the MILITARY
ALEXANDRA BAND for some time.
He would teach music with notations to youngsters at his music school
situated at JSS Marg, in Dhobitalao, Mumbai, where his sons Manuel and
Julius Noronha (DAYBREAKERS) still carry on his legacy of teaching
music to youngsters till date.
A collection of Cruz’s Mandos entitled MANDEACHO NAD was produced by
his sons in 2004 in a format of a music cassette.

Cruz passed away at his residence in Mumbai on February 10, 1974.

Goa's famous musician - B Paul
I would be highly obliged if anyone knowing more about this great musician
could provide me with some inputs on his career, besides his date of birth,
death, his photo etc.
B Paul:
Basil Paul Fernandes who took his professional name as B Paul hailed from
Colvale, Bardez. He learnt music in the parochial school in his village,
Colvale. He was a very good alto saxaphone and clarinet player. He would
also play tenor sax and violin as well. He went to Mumbai for better
pastures and lived at Grant Road in Mumbai.
After performing for small Goan bands, at hotels and for tiatrs in Mumbai,
he got a big break in the famous band of Mumbai of that time Nelly & Her
Orchestra and played for this band for many years. The band leader Nelly
being a parsee this band would usually play for parsee functions and all
big corporate functions.
B Paul was short and dark and music lovers compared him to the famous
American musician and singer Louis Amstrong, whom he resembled were much.
And to B Paul too Amstrong was his role model, so much so that he would
sing two of his songs in his inimitable style ‘Hello Doly’ and ‘Who’s Sorry
Now?’ for every show.
B Paul has played music for many tiatrs in Mumbai, first as a alto sax
player in Rock de Salcette’s band and later as a band leader he has
provided music for many tiatrs of J P Souzalin, C. Alvares, Jacint Vaz,
etc. He has also arranged music for many songs of the tiatrists who have
recorded their songs on HMV records. B Paul has also played music for hindi
films. - Fausto Visitacao Dacosta

[Goanet] Konkani Songs by Non-Goans

In the mid-1970s various prominent non-Goan singers were invited by the
Goan stalwarts Chris Perry and Alfred Rose to record Konkani songs under
their respective banners. While Chris Perry brought in Mohammad Rafi and
Usha Uthup (then known as Usha Iyer), Alfred Rose had Shailendra Singh,
Dilraj Kaur, Amit Kumar, Hemlata, Usha Mangeshkar (the only Goan in the
group), Ambar Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Krishna Kalle, Vani Jairam and Ranu
Mukherjee to sing for him. Meanwhile, in the south, Enoch Daniels roped in
the legendary Hemant Kumar to record memorable hits like *Juliana, Mollbar

[Goanet] Bomoicar -Stories of Bombay Goans - Alfred Rose

2014-10-10 Thread Edward Verdes
An extract from BOMOICAR: Stories of Bombay Goans, 1920-1980: pg 74:
At school the honest-to-goodness Gerry (Dr.Gerry Rodricks) was appointed
guardian of Alfred Rose,
nicknamed Goencho pao or Makapao, for his Konkani-accented English. The two
boys soon hit it off
and Alfred found his fame as St.Xavier's singing idol for the ditty composed
by his father, AMB (Ambrose) Fernandes,
who supplied condensed milk cans to ships. The song, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO
PAY ME WHAT YOU OWE ME?
appears to have been inspired by AMB's debtors. As the lyrics go:

Lots of people in this world, they seem to have a knack,
They borrow money from you, but they never pay you back,
So I want you all to cry, every time those money twisters pass you by,
When are you going to pay me what you owe me? (2)

And the Konkani continuation of the song.
A senior tiatrist who heard the song sent me Konkani words
.
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO PAY M WHAT YOU OWE ME? ...Sang tum moje duddu kednam
ditai?

Sabar munis duddu magchea velar khobro sangtat
Pun portun addun dinvchenant, tuje dusman zatat,
Rostean tankam poilear, bolteach vatten poutat,
Osleam munxank dekhtokuch sobemazar kantar korat

CHORUS
Sang tum moje duddu kednam ditai?
Aiz don vorsam zalim pollon bonvtai,

Above is a fine example of our music and musicians dedicated to all our lost

I know some will say they do not understand the words who are quite happy
dancing to the macarena, lambada and other languages which they do not
understand either.

Put your speakers loud and enjoy this beatiful song - keep our music and

Can someone kindly let us know the year when the above song was written and by
whom as there is a very important line at minute 1.40 that says poixe ghott
dhorta (money tight holds), in order words hesitant to part with money in this
instance for their bus ride. If you agree, poixe ghott dhorta appears to be
the same mental attitude of our people as much today as it was when this song
was first written, nothing really seems to have changed.

Our musicians and entertainers have kept us going over the years only to be
short changed by people who copy their items and resell at lower rates reducing
their opportunities of earning an income to progress making new films, entering
new creative ventures and even create employment.

My other heros are the sons and daughters of the soil in Goa and around the
world who till the land to produce our daily bread found in the market and
delivered to your doorstep and the roadside in all weathers. Here again you
will find haggling instead of just paying for the perishable goods essential
for daily living which causes prices to rise and fall. Only last year I heard
that one had to pay a few rupees for four carrots and now you have to pay the
same number of rupees for two carrots (not the carots in gold brought out for
an airing at kazar and festa dis).

My first travel with Jet Air was not a good one. It was many years back
Flying from Goa to Mumbai, Jet air did not accommodate me in the flight

From Jeddah and on slight turbulence the aircraft shakes a lot.

Regarding the baggage allowance, all airlines have now updated
Their websites with baggage allowance for all countries. Recently
Some had introduced the piece concept. Last year Lufthansa charged

Not all passengers flying from Jeddah are labourers, there are many pilgrims

Even though the original post was about Jet Airways customer service, it has
provided good discussion about what we travelers should be prepared for when
we travel.

Here are some of my observations:

1: for those among us who book online (say on Virgin) (as 007 Jim did),
there is no way (i know) to book from NY to Goa on that site.
2: Essentially, the BOM-Goa segment has to be booked separately and becomes
a domestic route and not subject to Int baggage agreements.
3: About booking via travel agents: Our Australia based family were booked
Sydney BOM (Quantas), BOM Goa (Spicejet). They arrived in BOM on (I
believe) Sept 9, 2013 - the day when Spicejet's reduced domestic baggage
allowance became effective. Somehow, the family did not know as the travel
agent either did not check or did not advise the passengers appropriately.

Suggestion: Always check on line before you travel.

[Goanet] Dovornnem - 1st Tiatr at the 39th Tiatr Competition

2013-09-23 Thread Edward Verdes
Dovornnem - By Agnelo L Fernandes (Agnelo Borim)

What is life full of care? We have no time to stand and stare’, Wrote
William Henry Davies.

Indeed, we live our life in a fast lane. We Goans who are said to have a
susegad
and laid back attitude to live are also steadily getting sucked into the
culture of the rat race.
Living at the speed of life that we cannot slow down, always haunted by the
finishing line,
life seems to have become a ride that seems to head nowhere. Before we meet
a dead end,
it is time to slow down and look at the bigger picture of life.

The new tiatr of Agnelo (Borim), ‘Dovornnem’ challenges us to do exactly
this.
He appears to have picked up the right place where we seem to have been
schooled and fooled
to live our life in the fast lane. Along with his ever energetic and
refreshing set of artistes,
thought provoking and insightful inputs of Rev. Dr. Victor Ferrao and
resourceful as well as agile direction
of Avinash Chari, Agnelo Borim and Ami Daizi Fatorda are all set to
entertain the audience
and forcefully drive home a vital and relevant message.
As we are faced with a very real threat of loss of the richness of our Goan
Culture,
‘Dovornnem’ opens a rejuvenating leaf from our cultural life.
Indeed, the word ‘Dovornnem’ is literally untranslatable but evokes a
profound past
as well illumines our present anxieties and promises a serene future.
Dovornnem of the yester years was a site of rest and re-energization.
Our ancestors carrying loads of goods on their head would stop and unload
their heavy burdens on it.
It not only became a space of rest but also became a space of independence
as the ‘Dovornnem’
become a reliable site to both to unload and lift ones load without any help
from outside.
Agnelo (Borim) attempts to take us on a reflective journey into the present
scenario of our life
and reminds us that we all need Dovornnem to remain, sane and calm in our
circumstances of life today.
To drive home this message, he takes up the context of education which seems
to school us into a life in the fast lane.

The tiatr Dovornnem attempts to present how the enabling and liberating
potentials of education
are suffocated and stifled by systems and practices that have converted
education into a ladder
to jump into the life in the fast lane. The Tiatr interrogates the system
that indoctrinates and domesticates
the students to live their life as dependent citizens. The thrill and
ecstasy of learning in the young children
is literally nipped in the bud by a system that basis its teaching and
learning strategies solely on reward
and punishment techniques and fails to let the children to think and learn.
This infantalization of the child in the classroom has converted our class
rooms into spaces
of passive knowledge consumption and in fact students learn without being
taught
to become dummy citizens of our consumerist world. While questioning the
reigning model of Education,
the tiatr makes a plea for a child-centric, teacher-student dialogic
relationship driven education
that would convert the class room into a space of active learning and
collaborative knowledge production.
The tiatr shows the crippling and disabling effects of present system of
learning
which converts us into deductive people whose assumptions are already set
for us
and we seem to have not ability to question them.

Agnelo ( Borim) creatively brings the importance of Dovornnem by putting
into play a family plot
that consists of three generations. These three levels of generation, the
grand father Celstinho, his son Antonio,
Two grand daughters Leah and Zeeta and a grandson are shown to be tossed by
the demands of life
while the grand father is challenged to lend his shoulder like the Dovornnem
to everyone.
The son being captured by the consumerist culture views education as a great
business opportunity
and is set to put education for sale. His two daughters along with their
grandfather
and the domestic helper Ramfu gate crash into his plans.
To find how the plot unfolds see Dovornnem that will be staged on 23rd
September, 2013 at 7p.m. at DMKM Kala Academy Panjim.

The Tiatr Dovornnem is scripted by Agnelo Borim has the concept by Rev. Dr.

Sushila Pereira, a mother of two from Mazgaon, remembers attending tiatrs
practically every Sunday with her family. Today she learns about upcoming
shows at church, from the magazine Examiner and through family. ?You cannot
compare tiatrs of the olden days to the ones now. The oldies had that
intense love for it, there was more life in the stories,? she says bemoaning
the fact that youngsters shying away from Konkani has resulted in lack of
interest in the theatre form. ?When we were young, those tiatrs were our
window to the world,? she says.

[Goanet] Nostalgia of Alfred Rose Songs

2013-08-06 Thread Edward Verdes
Alfred Rose 81st Birthday Remembrance 5th August

Nostalgia of Alfred Rose Songs - fr. Joaquim Fernandes

Gone are those childhood days when I used to hurry up my studies to listen
to the melodious Konkani programme under the titled Manazogtim Gitam, on the
Radio. So also during weddings in Goa, gramophone records of Konkani songs
were played on the old funnel-type mikes which kept the whole atmosphere of
the neighbourhood reverberating with music. No Tape-recorder, no TV, no
internet, no ipod existed. Radio and Newspaper were the only means of
communication. Somehow his songs did cast a magic spell on my innocent young
life so much that he seemed to me like a Pied Piper whose music just drove
me to the world of ecstasy.
Lots of tribute have been paid to him, by his passionate friends and fans,
by writing pages after pages on the various newspapers and websites
specially after his sad demise on 21st October 2003. I just don't want to
repeat what other fans and well-wishers have said nor I intend to
exaggerate my sharing on him. Although I have never met him personally nor
seen in the dramas, yet I feel overjoyed to scribble something on the
occasion of his birthday remembrance on 5th August.

Childhood memories they say, never die. Although now years have gone by yet
its melody still reverberates in my mind. Secondly by God's providence,
after 12 twelve years of Priesthood I was posted in the same village of
Carona where he was born. Perhaps God wanted me to keep him alive in
whatever way I can, for the immense contribution that he has done to the
Konkani in particular and to Goan culture in general.

Gabriel Marcel the famous French philosopher (the existentialist) saw with
his own eyes during the first world war how people brutally killed each
other without any inch of mercy. This moved him to write one drama called
the broken world. And in this drama he showed the plight of the modern
world. If we cast a glance around us we see in the life of the modern man
lack of values and principles. We read in the newspapers and see on the TV,
the murders, Rapes and all sorts of evil that is taking place in the
present-day world. In such a cloudy atmosphere, Alfred Rose songs appears
like the sunshine to the broken World. Like a magician he would hipnotise
the listener into singing, dancing and even crying. Due to his passionate
songs and melody he earned the sobriquets like Goa's melody king, the man
with the Golden voice etc.
Apart from his golden voice what makes him stand above the rest is his
ability to appeal to the different taste of different people whatever may be
cultural background. Whenever he undertook tour to the European countries he
shaped his songs according to the taste of his audience. He believed in the
adage, 'Be a Roman when you are in Rome. His songs though highly
'entertaining' with his lovely and lively music yet I would call them as
edutaining, meaning along with the entertainment they are educating the
listener with the thought provoking message.
Thirdly, another difference that I have found is that unlike most of the
modern singers, there is lot of positivity in his songs. His songs seems to
say there is no use of crying over split milk, but keep up hope, there is
brighter side of life, sooner or later the sun is sure to rise in your
life. He never indulged in mud slinging in his songs but on the contrary
inculcated values in the heart of the listener. Love is the central idea of
the most of his songs. Romanticism seems to be his forte. He sings his
romantic songs not merely with his golden voice but more than that, he sings
it with great passion and with gusto that captivates the heart of the
listener.
Though Alfred rose had a humble beginning, yet he never forgot his roots.
Though he achived much in his life mostly as a singer yet he ever rememebers
his roots. This is evident in his songs such as kalchi coddi, ghoddxem, etc.
He identifies himself with the sick, the old, the poor and the downtrodden
through his songs and raises up their spirits. Whenever are natural
calamities or disasters or accidents he used to beautifully express the
sorrow the world has experience though that disaster. His sorrowful songs no
doubt would bring tears in my eyes.
Still thoughts start flowing in my mind but I would like to restrict myself
and remember my favourite singer Late Alfred Rose on his 81st Birthday on
5th August, and pray that the Lord may give him the eternal bliss in heaven.
I take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Rita Rose and his family members for
granting me the permission to compile his songs under the title
Gitanjali'. I also wish to thank his die-hard fans Mr. Edward Verdes,
Andrea Alvares and others who have supported me in compiling this Book. This
Book is available in Pauline Centres, Panjim and Mapusa, Light House Margao
and Vasco etc. So let's keep him and Goan culture alive till the last
breath of our life.

[Goanet] BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY - Goa/Mumbai Bus

2013-03-30 Thread Edward Verdes
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY

http://afternoondc.in/city-news/better-safe-than-sorry/article_79023

Bus operators avoid accident prone Mumbai-Goa Highway, adding time and extra
miles to ensure passengers reach alive and well
After a bus plunged into a river on the Mumbai-Goa Highway recently, killing
40 passengers, some major bus operators on this route have started plying
their buses via the Mumbai Pune Expressway, and the rest too are planning to
follow suit. Considering the safety of passengers, drivers and the buses to
be more important, the operators are ready to bear the extra costs arising
out of the increase in distance of about 70 km, which also extends the
journey time by as much as 1 to 2 hours.

There have been several accidents along the Mumbai-Goa Highway due to
several reasons like single narrow road, steep curves, over speeding at
blind curves, overtaking, etc. As the drivers are always trying to complete
their journey within 12 hours, most resort to over speeding, putting
themselves and the passengers in constant danger of death or injury.

The distance to Goa via the Mumbai- Goa Highway is 615 km and via the
Mumbai-Pune Expressway, it increases to 690 km, but the roads on the
expressway are broader and hence, safer.

Aziz Sheikh, Operation Officer of Neeta Travels, said, “Neeta Travels has
been plying all its buses via Mumbai Pune Éxpress Highway since the last 2-3
months are. Our buses too have been involved in accidents on the older
route, resulting loss of life and property. The Mumbai Goa Highway is
accident prone because of the narrow roads, steep curves, ghats, increase in
traffic movement, over speeding and dangerous overtaking by motorists. Since
passenger safety is most important, we are now using the Mumbai-Pune route,
and after passing Pune, we go via Satara, Karad, Kolhapur.

After us, other bus operators too have started following this much safer of
travel between Mumbai and Goa.

Comment: I mostly travel by bus from Mumbai to Goa, the last I travelled by
the illfated bus was in Mid Jan this year.
The Mahakali bus drivers are safe and their buses are year old, however I
must say that the Mumbai-Goa Highway is accident
Prone in some places, where the roads are narrow and mostly important the
bridges are dangerous and very old, including
The one where the bus fell off. Work is going on at a snails place to make
it 4 lane but it will take some more years.
There are 2 drivers in each bus working on shift of 5/6 hrs each, what I
have mostly seen is that if the first driver
Is slow, the next driver tries to make up for the time lost and make sure
they arrive the destination early.
There is also one conductor/cleander who mostly does the other work, and
also stays with night driver to keep
him awake, so the question of driver falling asleep does not arise.

[Goanet] Release of Kenny's new album 'Senorita

2013-02-28 Thread Edward Verdes
Kenny's 8th album 'Senorita' was recently released in Mumbai on occasion of
the 11th Konkani Carnival of Maharashtra Konkani Kala Sanstha.

This audio album has 11 konkani songs and 1 tullu song, sung by Kenny,
Sheanella Miranda, Kenny-kenneth Zuzarte, Titta Pretto, Succurine, Betty
Naz, Maryann D'Souza, Augustine Coelho.

The lyrics are composed by Carrie, Kenny, Titta, Augustine Coelho, Joe
Wallace, Francis de Tuem, late H.Britton and Late Gabru Gomes and Music By
Day Breakers of Mumbai. The tunes are catchy and singers have done full
justice to the songs.

The highlight of this album is the multi-star cast song 'Italian Bhurgo'
which is sung by 20 singers, - 16 of them children of yesteryear tiatrist.
This is first time in history of Konkani kantaram that one song is sung by
20 singers from Goa and Mumbai.

They are Capucina (late C Alvares), Julius (late Cruz Noronha), Lara
(Antonette and Late Romeo Mendes), Risma (Meena and Late Christopher
Leitao), Ravi (late PREM KUMAR), Monica (late Gabru Gomes), Alria (Rita and
late Alfred Rose), Candy (late Philomena Braz), Babli (late Mohana, Ophelia
and Late Bab Peter), Jennifer (Bella and late Saby Coutinho), Jr. Nelson
(late Nelson Afonso), Felcy (late Rom Tony), Salida (Carrie Fernandes),
Zubin (Saby Fernandes) and Sheanella and Krishangi (Kenny).the other four
being Kenneth Dias, Betty Naz, Carrie Fernandes and Kenny himself. This song
is worth listening more than once...a great tribute to the tiatrists by
their children. Over all a must buy album for konkani Kantaram
lovers...available in Mumbai, Goa Manglore.

Eddie Verdes

-Original Message-

Hello Domnic-Bab,

First of all Konkani words can have multiple meanings in Salcete and in
Bardez.
In Salcete villages the Intruz (Carnaval) Monom or Mono, with an acute
accent on second o makes it Monom, a feared figure at Carnaval time or
boogey-man.
But if you have an acute accent on first o as in Mo , yes the meaning
is dumb certainly.
In Portuguese there are accents, so it conveys the clear word pronunciation.

I don't know how they will differentiate it in Devanagri script.
But Mono can have 2 meanings. So when a Saxtti mother used to say to a
child Baba mono etolo tuka khauncheak it means the boogey-man and not the
dumb person.
Cheers

[Goanet] New Baggage Rules for International flights

2012-09-19 Thread Edward Verdes
Friends, before you fly international pls check the new baggage rules,
adapted by your airline.
Most Foreign airlines have started using the piece concept with the weight.
Some airlines allow 64kgs or less for Biz class 2 pieces and Economy 1bag
23/32 kgs.
For every additional bag you will have to pay extra even though you are
within the permissible weight limits.
Also note the airlines will not accept bags over 32kgs.

On a recent flight to Poland we had to pay for the extra piece even though
we had less weight.

This maybe new for gulf flights, as they were not implementing this rule
before.

Eugene,
Remmie also sang a few songs with Alfred Rose.
Vantto Meuchonam and North-South from album 'Chief Minister',
'Bhattkar ani Mundkar'and ''Rakhche Devan'from the album 'Civil Marriage'
Both Albums of Alfred Rose. Read he also sang some songs with AMB Rose.

Remmie must have composed sung over 400 songs for tiatrs but he hardly
Produced any audio albums, his only album that I know is 'Gharachem Sukh'
The rest of the songs were on LP records.

At a rough estimate, Remmie must have composed at least 400 songs in
his long career, since he made his debut in a amateur tiatr,
Bhaguintlem Ful (he has a song by that name) as a youngster playing a
female role. Then came Maim, also a small role as a female. It was in
1944, and later in the same year C. Alvares got him to act in Tor Ho

Can I see my baby? the happy new mother asked.

When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to
look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked
out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears. Time
proved that the baby's hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that
was marred. When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into
his mother's arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession
of heartbreaks. He blurted out the tragedy. A boy, a big boy ... called me

Re: [Goanet] Goan ghost stories...

2012-02-04 Thread Edward Verdes
This is what I had posted on 'Tiatrist Fan group'on facebook last month.
There were a few who remembered these incident and commented.

TORCH - is the 2nd song from George Coelho's album 'Tiatristancho Raza'
which was dedicated to M.Boyer
When he was still living. George Coelho in this song tell us that this is a
real story
...it seems there was one Jerry from Cortalim who used to work in Vasco..one
night as he was returning
home from work late night his bike skipped somewhere in the middle in
Kesarval...
a tempo passing by stopped and a man/driver from the tempo came to his help.

This man helped Jerry to start his bike, but realised that his headlights
were not working,
so the tempo man/driver gave him a Torch so that he can reach home safely.
Jerry thanked him and asked where he could return the torch..and the tempo
man/driver told him that
he works in a bank in Sanvordem and that he cud keep that torch in that
bank.
Jerry reached home safely that night and so the next morning he went to
return the torch in the bank..
the staff in the bank were shocked to hear, as the man or driver who gave
Jerry the torch had passed away a year back.
Jerry still cudnt believe this so he asked the address of the man...
when Jerry reached the man's house he was shocked to see the picture of this
man garlanded
and he came to know from his parents that this man had died on that spot in
Kesarwval a year back.

RICKSHAWALA - another song...

Thoddim melelim almam borim kortat ani thoddim vaitt..
This song is about a rickshawala picking up a lady passenger late night..
on the way he takes another passenger...the lady tells the rickshawala to
stop near a hill,
and as she walks towards the hill...the other passenger tells the
rickshawala...
see the lady's feet are backwards (porte/ulta)...the rickshawala was
shocked...
the passenger then tells him look at my legs...the rickshawala fainted.
Someone came back with a feedback saying the Rickshawala passed away
narrating
This incident to his mom in the hospital.

And there was another one about the suit in the graveyard...

While I was digging into my storage cartons to locate Christmas Carol
oldies' audio cassettes, I found one of Nolasco Dias' cassettes titled
VIVA-RE-GOA, which must be approximately 30 years old!

This is a very interesting cassette because while side 'A' contains
Prelude, Mando Dulpods and Folk Songs, side 'B' contains Glimpses of a
Goan Society Wedding celebrated at home (a complete sequence) - it is
indeed a unique cassette. I wish someone would come up with a VCD,
especially of side 'B'; of course with his family's permission.

Eugene,
One of my cousin sisters husband passed away in the very same hospital 2
months back.
He was on self-dialysis, carried his kit all the way from Canada on doctors
advise.
They were supposed to return to Canada after a week staying in Goa. On the
last day
they had been to colva and he ate something over there which caused food
poison,
he was rushed to Apollo Margaoa and was in ICU. After a month in ICU doing
tests and operations,
he finally left for Canada in a coffin! the bill was over 25 lakhs, but am
not sure if u guys are
covered under travel Insurance once you come down to India.
My mom was rushed to GMC and they had to be amputate her leg, after she was
operated in Apollo.

A few years back I had posted on this forum, two cases involving our close
friends. The Docs in Goa
Treated them for a year and finally recommended to Tata Hospital in Mumbai.
When we saw the letters
We knew it was Cancer case but the patients nor their relatives were aware
of this.
Agree corruption is everywhere, but this case u are playing with human life.

I recently had a very dissapointing experience with Apollo Victor Hospital,
Margoa. The day I went to meet the doctor I was informed that I would be
admitted the same day and operated upon the next day for kidney tumour. The
doctors there said I would also need angiography and temporary pacemaker as
they found irregular heartbeats as I had undergone triple bypass more than
10 years ago. I stayed there for two days undergoing tests. My brother was
asked to arrange for blood (three bottles) at night for surgery to be held
next morning at eight. He said it would be impossible to round up people so
late. But I got out of the hospital the next morning.

[Goanet] Tuzo Uggdas - Album Launch

2011-06-29 Thread Edward Verdes
Album Launch - Tuzo Uggdas by Alex Dias

Locatin: Santa cruz church hall-st.cruz
Time : Friday, July 1 . 7:00pm - 10:00pm

http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=247989871883759

Tuzo uggdas' is my debut konkanni album , I have composed my songs in such a
way
that they not only cater to the Goan listeners but also the world over.
The album has songs in different genres so that it can appeal to people with
different tastes of music.
Apart from local Deknni style flavour, there is a mix of Pop, Rock, Reggae
and rock n roll.
The backup vocals for these songs have been arranged in a very innovative
way with lot of modern influences.
The title track of my album 'Tuzo Uggdas' is a dedication to my father who
passed away last year and the others
are on various themes such as, the song on Mother Theresa is life and her
contribution towards mankind.
Also there is a song giving a message to the couples getting married.
There is a song on the way we Goans celebrate feasts with great enthusiasm
as well there are a reggae
flavoured song on the Goan cuisine, There is a light bone-tickling comedy
song called Milkman,
and also a song of a sailor falling in love on-board! The lyrics have been
written by my brother Francisco Dias.
The song on Mother Theresa has been written by Peter Barbosa.
I hope that this work of mine will be accepted by the listeners and the
lovers of Music,
check out my teaser track here,,
Thanks!

That was the opening song titled 'Dennem'composed by Neves Oliveira from
his album with Lorna titled 'Dennem'released in 2009. Lorna started singing
this song from the time Neves's musical show 'Bhangarchem Goem' which was
held in Mumbai in Jan this year, or else Lorna always used to sing Portun Aikat

This show was held on 24th Jan at Thackeray Ball

Of his death anniversary which was on the following day (25th jan).

[Goanet] More on Anna Hazare - LOKPAL QUOTA

2011-04-14 Thread Edward Verdes
By Vishnudas Sheshrao

RPI demands ‘representation’ in bill drafting committee

Anna Hazare may have won the war against the central government but he may
have one more battle to fight – that of reservations. This is one more
battle that has erupted among the many about who should be in the drafting
committee of the Lokpal Bill.

The Republican Party of India (RPI) seeks to claim its share in the success
of the movement to introduce the bill stating that its workers had
participated in the protest in  support of Anna Hazare. For this they want
two of their representatives from the ‘Ambedkari Janata’ (followers of
Ambedkar), including the controversial Chief Justice of India (CJI), K.G.
Balakrishnan on the drafting committee.

http://afternoondc.in/city-news/lokpal-quota/article_22155

Interestingly, last February, Income Tax Authorities in Kochi had alleged
that Balakrishnan’s three relatives, including his son-in-law P.V.
Sareenijan and M.J. Benny both advocates, were found to possess black money
during investigation into allegations of amassment of disproportionate
wealth by them.
Athawale alleged, “Anna Hazare cast out all politicians alleging them as
corrupt. However, a spiritual-yoga guru turned politician, Swami Ramdev, who
has collected huge sums of black money from his devotees, was enjoying
special status with Anna, in Delhi. Ramdev must continue with his yoga and
should not interfere in social and political issues. However, we could not
contact Anna Hazare, as he had isolated himself.”

open n the other with the zip. Both come in handy as they are strong and can
hold lot of stuff like fresh fish, meats, vegges n can be washed after use.
Besides this bag, many mumbaikar also used to get the fish soap and payal
slippers :))

Last year IC Parish initiated the Plastic Free drive, by distributing free
cloth bags, and it was followed

for quite some time.

Eddie, I've heard about the Goa bag, but only from Bomboicars. If
I'm not mistaken, it's the black, plasticy bag that is available at
the Mapusa market, and probably at other places.

Being in Goa myself, I've not thought of this as a Goa bag for
obvious reasons :-)

Question: do you know how and when this name originated, or when it
was first used? Intrigued... FN

where you find mostly Goans coming for their daily fresh fish with Goa
Bag :)

Agree with Hilary, Goans were there long before, most of them
shifting from other parts of Mumbai. A few years back IC
Parish had 20,000+ parishioners, which included Dahisar. Now
Dahisar has a seperate church. The Bazaar is the typical Goan bazaar
where you find mostly Goans coming for their daily fresh fish with Goa Bag
:)

There is already a Manglorean Association there, but Goans have recently
started. A Prince Jacob tiatr is always house full. The midnight mass
for Christmas/New Year starts at 9 n ends by 11, with reading and hymns
in English/Konkani/Hindi. Its a typical goan village with Ambe, Ponos, madd.
Dec is more festive with communion parties and each building having
their own Christmas/new year parties. Slowly the old bunglows are making
way for new buildings.

Good Morning Frederick

Pertinent to your mail below, I don't think IC Colony is the newer
settings for Goans. As far as I know goans have been here long long
before.

I know of many who have/had property/ies within the Colony, Goa type
houses.
