[Goanet] A short story by Laffin Joe

2021-09-29 Thread Joseph Fernandes
Good day all,

I have been dabbling myself in writing short stories and wrote a few
especially humorous ones. Looking for your criticism and opinions. Hope you
all enjoy it.

Funeral, Emotions and Breasts - Laffin Joe
‐-

Ahh! I am sure the title got your imaginations running but as much as I
want to say, that this is a fictitious story any resemblance to the
subjects mentioned are purely co-incidental. Except if anyone bears any
resemblance to the breast mentioned in my story, will have to do really
well. That is to bear resemblance both in touch, size and sensation. 
I didn’t have a great relationship with my father emotionally. I would get
really pissed off for the way he would reprimand me. Occasionally, we did
have conversations and debates on various topics, one them included huge
breasts.
But one particular incident had a profound effect on me and it had an
impact on my life.
“The day you will have your children is the day you will know the value of
a father and you will remember me” he would proclaim his rights over me.
These words rang through my mind as I saw them lowering my dad resting in
his coffin peacefully.
Dad use to scold me for coming late every night and a 5 day beer festival
was no exception. It was a lot of fun, the ecstatic feeling of getting high
and dancing to all the live bands is what enjoyment is all about after all.
Having no responsibilities and trying to impress all the lovely young girls
was the way of life. All the fun had ended when I came home late. As
irritating as it was he went on nagging.
“What am I supposed to think, where you were all these days. I thought you
were missing. I was to go to the police station to give in a missing
complain”
“Chill dad, I am here now so what is the point of all this. You get
stressed for no reason” I said.
“The day you will have your children is the day you will know the value of
a father and you will remember me”
As the funeral rites were over, people came to wish me some of them held my
hand to console me. I was in grief and couldn’t raise my head to see who
they were. Suddenly, I felt my hands feel something soft yet it was weird.
They were not hands. I looked up to see and it was a lady whose breasts my
dad always admired. But what why did her hands feels so weird in my hands.
As I looked, alas I held her large breasts in my folded hands. I was
shaking them in a hand shake while she was consoling me. This used to the
topic of my dad discussion and debates. I hung my head, yet I was smiling
and silently laughing. My dad wanted me to live now for my two sons. Yet, I
don’t talk to them; we don’t have a conversation nor debates. We are on our
mobiles every day.
Yes Dad, I now know your value. I could talk to you about anything. I love
you.

I don't even remotely know the answers to most questions like these and
have nothing close to green fingers. Anyway, thought of sharing this query.

In no time, the replies came in.

Aparna wrote in to say: "Saplings available for free on Saturday at the
Campal give-away." Nestor Rangel added: "I will have [these] in August.
Normal mulberry and kingwhite mulberry."

Kenny D'Mello said: "You can have cuttings from me, they grow fast. I am
in Dona Paula." Ruena/Agnel Ribeiro said: "I too have. I am at Calangute.
Anyone can come and take too."

A day later, my senior neighbour, Mrs Vaz, wrote back to say: "Things
worked fast for me. Joseph Mascarenhas... came all the way from Assagao
just now and delivered it to me. Gave him an Iron Cross begonia pot in
exchange. Was happy."

So happy me too that the sharing economy can indeed work, and demonstrably
so, even if in small ways. We keep asking where is the old Goan way of
life gone, when it's here, right under our nose.

Depending on one's perspective, this could be so reminiscent of John 6:1-15
(check it out!). Or, the tonnes of Free Software created by movements like
the GNU, far away from the clutches of a Bill Gates and Micro$oft. Or,
oodles of Open Access knowledge, Creative Commons texts, photos, and even
music. This is what happens when people take to sharing. Never mind all
efforts to sabotage the sharing economy and disrupt movements towards that
goal.

Want to be part of this?

Join the Saligao Seed Bank -- don't ask why it was thus named, just because
it was started there, and initially thought of as a small village
initiative. Today it has members even from Brazil and Europe... maybe
there to share the information.

Actually, no, you can't join that network. It already has (a WhatsApp
maximum) of 257 members and is completely filled up. But, another group is
just getting going, and it's the Saligao Seed Bank 2. It might take a few
days to get active, but you can definitely go there, participate, and add
value as much as you hope to receive. Join it at

All these hungry ministers who have deserted other parties are now focused
on making the most of their time in the BJP as most of their colleagues are
desperately ill.

The sick Mla's and ministers have visited the best Hospitals in India and
abroad at our cost putting our coffers in a bad position. Why did they not
spend their money which they made illegally from public funds? These people
will have to answer to the ALMIGHTY GOD for all the sins committed while
they were living.

Rohan Khaunte has not learned his lesson. He is still healthy and is using
his energy to amass more wealth during the last days of his tenure by
pushing forward an IT PARK or two despite local opposition.

Goans will surely teach all these guys who have finished our GOA a lesson.

While in the Opposition, a very humble pretending Rohan Khaunte was very
vocal on the need of seeking the people?s consultation and consent before
any public project is pursued.

The very same now ever so arrogant Rohan Khaunte as a Minister wants that
IT Park at Chimbel despite the local Gram Sabha having unanimously opposed
it and the local MLA Tony Fernandes also having rejected the project.

If Rohan Khaunte is so desperate to have that IT Park, he should take it to
his own backward in Porvorim Constituency.

Rohan Khaunte knows well that his current protracted picnic as Minister and
MLA could end anytime, so while it lasts he is possibly trying to
desperately rake in whatever possible.

But on account of those public curses with so many Ministers already
hospitalized, Rohan Khaunte would be well advised not to queue up himself
to be the next in line. Now Goa may need to be liberated from Rohan
Khaunte.

"How many of you intend to hang around and work in Goa after
graduation?", I asked a group of 100-plus sparkling faces of
to-be-engineering grads sitting in front of me brimming with
enthusiasm and positivity. My modest expectation was that at
least 50% of them would raise their hands in affirmation. But
alas, to my utter shock and dismay two -- just two! -- of
them raised their hands. I asked again and there was no
change in the scenario. I was really taken aback!

I was part of the team which was on a visit to the Goa
Engineering College (GEC) under Project DIKSHANT of the Goa
IT Professionals (GITP). The project aims to build IT
industry-academia synergy by keeping the students abreast
about the needs of the IT industry and giving them an insight
into the growing IT ecosystem in the state.

The response from the students made me ponder.

Can we blame the youngsters for this response? I sincerely
don't think so. I feel, we as a community have failed to
instill in them a sense of confidence in the opportunities
which are available in the state. It could be the
indifference of the system, the apathy of the decision
makers, our education system, our overall environment etc. etc.

I do understand that when we give wings of state-of-the-art
education to our youth, then we have to be ready to see them
fly high and fly past us. But, when so many people across
India look at Goa as a land of opportunities, my bare minimum
expectation is that at least 50-60 % of our youngsters should
aspire to remain in the state and contribute to building an
upwardly mobile and healthy industry ecosystem. This in turn
will create more opportunities for the next generation of
Goans.

Around six million (60 lakh) national and
international tourists i.e. almost four times the
population of Goa come to the state every year.
That itself creates umpteen opportunities in every
sector from agriculture to IT. Brand Goa also
offers many add-on opportunities. Then there are
sectors like mining, shipping, pharma which have
their own set of openings. Since Goa is a small
state, prototypes for public utility solutions in
e-governance, tourism, digital payment etc can be
created and scaled nationally and globally. For
anyone who has an eye for opportunities we have the
   most conducive atmosphere around.

With technology, the world has been turned into a global
village. 'Working remotely' as a concept is picking up. You
can work for any company in the word by sitting right here in
Goa.

The IT ecosystem in Goa is buzzing with action. Many
companies in Goa are catering to global clients. Incubation
and startup activities are building up. Against this
backdrop, instead of trying ones luck in alien environments
in the metros, youngsters should be motivated to put in equal
amount of effort right here in Goa and climb the ladder of
success.

I am confident that if they join a local company or venture
into entrepreneurship, they will surely be happier
financially... and otherwise too. And I am looking for
measures to pass on that confidence to the youngsters.

As someone who has observed the industry from very
close quarters over the years, I know there are
multiple teething problems and hiccups. At the
entry level the salaries are comparatively low. But
as one gains experience and develops expertise in
niche areas doors of high-end opportunities will
open up. I know of many IT companies in Goa who pay

Today is also an important day in the History of Goa.

Today is the feast of the Cuncolim Martyrs

We should demand that this should also be included in the History of Goa.
We should be grateful to these Martyrs, because of whose sacrifice we got
the True faith.

Thank you,
Read below for the details account of the incident:

Martyrs of Cuncolim

On Monday, 25 July, 1583 (N.S.), the village of Cuncolim in the district of
Salcete, territory of Goa, India, was the scene of the martyrdom of five
religious of the Society of Jesus: Fathers Rudolph Acquaviva, Alphonsus
Pacheco, Peter Berno, and Anthony Francis, also Francis Aranha, lay brother.

Rudolph Acquaviva was born 2 October, 1550, at Atri in the Kingdom of
Naples. He was the fifth child of the Duke of Atri, and nephew of Claudius
Acquaviva, the fifth General of the Society of Jesus, while on his mother's
side he was a cousin of St. Aloysius Gonzaga. Admitted into the Society of
Jesus 2 April, 1568, he landed in Goa 13 September, 1578. Shortly after his
arrival he was selected for a very important mission to the court of the
Great Mogul Akbar, who had sent an embassy to Goa with a request that two
learned missionaries might be sent to Fatehpir-Sikri, his favourite
residence near Agra. After spending three years at the Mogul court, he
returned to Goa, much to the regret of the whole Court and especially of
the emperor. On his return to Goa, he was appointed superior of the Salcete
mission, which post he held until his martyrdom.

Alphonsus Pacheco was born about 1551, of a noble family of New Castile,
and entered the Society on 8 September, 1567. In September, 1574, he
arrived in Goa, where he so distinguished himself by his rare prudence and
virtue that in 1578 he was sent to Europe on important business. Returning
to India in 1581, he was made rector of Rachol. He accompanied two punitive
expeditions of the Portuguese to the village of Cuncolim.

Peter Berno was born of humble parents in 1550 at Ascona, a Swiss village
at the foot of the Alps. After being ordained priest in Rome, he entered
the Society of Jesus in 1577, arrived in Goa in 1579, and was soon
appointed to Salcete. He accompanied the expeditions to Cuncolim and
destroyed an ant-hill which was deemed very sacred. He used to say
constantly that no fruit would be gathered from Cuncolim and the hamlets
around it till they were bathed in bloodshed for the Faith. His superiors
declared that he had converted more pagans than all the other fathers put
together.

Anthony Francis, born in 1553, was a poor student of Coimbra in Portugal.
He joined the Society in 1571, accompanied Father Pacheco to India in 1581,
and was shortly afterwards ordained priest in Goa. It is said that whenever
he said Mass, he prayed, at the Elevation, for the grace of martyrdom; and
that on the day before his death, when he was saying Mass at the church of
Orlim, a miracle prefigured the granting of this prayer.

Brother Francis Aranha was born of a wealthy and noble family of Braga in
Portugal, about 1551, and went to India with his uncle, the first
Archbishop of Goa, Dom Gaspar. There he joined the Society of Jesus, 1
November, 1571. Being a skilled draughtsman and architect, he built several
fine chapels in Goa.

These five religious met in the church of Orlim on the 15 of July, 1583,
and thence proceeded to Cuncolim, accompanied by some Christians, with the
object of erecting a cross and selecting ground for building a church.
Seeing an opportunity of doing away with these enemies of their pagodas,
the pagan villagers, after holding a council, advanced in large numbers,
armed with swords, lances, and other weapons, towards the spot where the
Christians were. Gonçalo Rodrigues one of the party, levelled his gun, but
Father Pacheco stopped him, saying: "Come, come, Senhor Gonçalo, we are not
here to fight." Then, speaking to the crowd, he said in Konkani, their
native language, "Do not be afraid". The Pagans then fell upon them; Father
Rudolph received five cuts from a scimitar and a spear and died praying God
to forgive them, and pronouncing the Holy Name. Father Berno was next
horribly mutilated, and Father Pacheco, wounded with a spear, fell on his
knees extending his arms in the form of a cross, and praying God to forgive
his murderers and send other missionaries to them. Father Anthony Francis
was pierced with arrows, and his head was split open with a sword. Brother
Aranha, wounded at the outset by a Scimitar and a lance, fell down a deep
declivity into the thick crop of a rice-field, where he lay until he was
discovered. He was then carried to the idol, to which he was bidden to bow
his head. Upon his refusal to do this, he was tied to a tree and, like St.
Sebastian was shot to death with arrows. The spot where this tree stood is
marked with an octagonal monument surmounted by a cross, which was repaired
by the Patriarch of Goa in 1885.

The bodies of the five martyrs were thrown into a well, water of which was

[Goanet] St Thomas Higher Secondary School Aldona, celebrates 25 glorious years of achievement

2017-07-10 Thread Joseph
*St Thomas Higher Secondary School Aldona, celebrates 25 glorious years
of achievement*

St Thomas Higher Secondary School, Aldona had a humble beginning on the
13th of July 1992
when St Thomas Boys' High School run by the Missionaries of St Francis
de Sales (MSFS)
opened its higher secondary section with fifty two students in the
commerce stream. Fr Jerson
D’Souza, MSFS was the founder of the higher secondary section and the
first principal. The
classes were held in St Thomas Boys’ High School in the afternoons .
From then on it has never
looked back taking giant strides of progress down the way. The next
academic year saw the

commencement of the arts stream and the march of progress continued.

The need was felt for a separate premises for the higher secondary
section and the new
building for the higher secondary section saw the light of the day on
the 14th of February 1998.
This was possible only with the support and collaboration of many people
of Aldona and Fr

Thomas Fernandes, MSFS the main benefactor of this project.

Situated on the hilltop at Aldona, with its scenic beauty it provides a
most conducive
atmosphere for teaching and learning. The higher secondary school
strives to bring out the best
in every child, may it be academics , sports or co-curricular
activities. It concentrates on value

based all round development.

The march of progress continued with the inauguration of the science
stream in July 2004,
which could boast of one of the best designed and equipped laboratories
in Goa. The promise
of all round development of a student was fulfilled with improvements
like a lush green football
ground, concrete standard basketball court and a lovely volleyball court
not forgetting the indoor

badminton court. Thus adding many more feathers to its cap.

As time passed by, the needs of society changed and the Fransalian
Education society run by
the MSFS was quick enough to respond and thus the job oriented
Vocational Stream came into
reality in June 2009. The Catering and Restaurant Management course was
well equipped with
a restaurant and a kitchen for hands on experience to this practical
based course.
And lo and behold they had a full fledged higher secondary school
running with all the four
streams Commerce, Arts, Science and Vocational. The principals and staff
of St Thomas
Higher Secondary School, Aldona have been carrying out their mission of
educating heart and
mind through value based education. Thus remaining faithful to the
founder of MSFS Fr Peter

Mary Mermier who said “Education of the heart is the heart of education”.

Motivation, hard work and commitment have produced excellent results in
all the four streams.
Looking back at the last 25 years one can see with pride innumerable
students who left the
portals of this institute not only professionally occupying high
positions in society but also as
responsible humane individuals of society. Truly St. Thomas Higher
Secondary School is

sometimes referred as the pride of Aldona.

Today we stand 25 years tall loaded with tons of achievements , achieved
down the way which
is an outcome of the zeal, enthusiasm, foresight and hardwork put in by
the management,

principals , staff and PTA.

It gives us immense pleasure and joy to celebrate the conclusion of the
Silver Jubilee year with
a deep sense of gratitude on the 13th of July 2017. The theme chosen for
the day is ”Honouring
The Past Let Us Create The Future “ . His Grace Most Rev Filipe Neri
Ferrao Archbishop of
Goa and Daman will preside over the Concelebrated Thanksgiving Eucharist
along with
Provincial of Pune Province Fr Vincent Lourduswamy MSFS, General
Councillor for Education
of MSFS Congregation Fr George Parampukattil MSFS and others. This will
be followed by a

short closing ceremony.

Success has not made us complacent and as we move from a glittering
present to a golden
future,we look forward towards the next 25 years with loads of
aspirations and desires. . . .. .

Except for a few principled citizens,
most people in India are under the general impression that
corruption is a necessary way of life and if one has to
exist comfortably, then one must be a part of the system
that requires bribes at every turn.

Some of the latter will even wear on their shoulder the
badge of support for corruption, seeing it as a means to
acquire things they are not entitled to.

Hope they read yesterday's TOI report of 3152 farmers in
Maharashtra forced to commit suicide just last year because
to get drought subsidies, loan waivers and grants, they had
to pay bribes from clerks to mamlatdars and tehsildars
further agonizing their already frail mental condition.

At one time , in the 1960`s, Kenya`s hockey team was a power-house on

The popular stands were filled with a lot of goan fans from the

There were comments like..." but these are Sikhs and Goans "..

critical part about elections too, and this book is all about that.

This book is by a *Tarun Bharat/Gomantak/Dainik Herald* journo. It has
sections (in Marathi) covering Goa's first to 11th legislative assembly
elections, BJP's first formation of a government in Goa, political
instability, countermanding, presidential rule, in short an overview and
also a detailed look at electoral politics here.

Its next section deals with the Lok Sabha elections. in 16 different
sections. The second-last ends with the elections of 2014 (while the last
focuses on MPs elected/nominated to represent Goa since 1962).

>From page 119 to 250 is a section in English offering detailed results of

journalist or just about anyone interested in keeping track of how votes
are collated to make for winning alliances, split up and fractionalised to
ensure the defeat of some, and otherwise manipulated (sometimes innocently,
at other times in keeping with the negative connotations of this word).

Of course, needs reading in between the lines too.

Like the other two books, this one too is available from the Varsha Book
Stall, near Azad Maidan in Panjim. Reasonably priced, and a useful work of
documentation and (if you can read Marathi) analysis.

If you harvest pepper when all of it is ripe, it does not produce
the best flavor.

You have to harvest all your pepper when only a few berries are ripe.
After removing from the stalks they are kept in boiling water for
minutes and then drained.

After which dried in the sun for several days.

This gives the darkest black color and strong smell and flavor

That's sadly the case.
If he were to identify himself he would probably get paid for his
work and also get offers to supply photos for the large number of

For example my photo on Flickr on the Goa Carnival (licensed under cc)

Part of that may be due to JGUK himself. His extreme paranoia in remaining

  Dear John Gomes,
After watching the actions of our Goa politicians, albeit from afar,
I have come to the conclusion that most of them are opportunists who
vie for office not to selflessly serve the general populace of our
tiny state , but to serve a narrow groupmaybe the mining
magnates or the directives of the RSS ( who are the mentors of the
BJP) or maybe some personal ambition or to find a chance to
enrich themselves by extracting money from those folk who need their
help in real estate/family property/ business deals...note their
close collaboration with the out-of -state real estate developers.
The former PWD minister Churchill Alemao who won tremendous favour
with the common folk in solving water delivery problems etc; is now
under investigation for alleged acceptance of bribes together wtih his
CM of those days ( D.Kamat) from a foreign concern that was to set up
a water-related project Can you imagine the chief executive of a State
under such a cloud. However in the constant culture of corruption
which is standard operating procedure in the body politic of
India...such behaviour is tolerated as acceptable by Indian
standards.
Can you trust their party manifestos or campaign promises in their
path to public office ?

 old customs like bull fights

Veteran journalist and Padma Bhushan awardee Mark Tully, who was born in
Kolkata in 1935, today received his birth certificate from the Kolkata
Municipal Corporation, 78 years after his birth.

Tully, who was born at Regent Park in the Tollygunj area in the southern
part of the city (then in undivided 24-Parganas district) on October 24,
1935, needed the certificate to apply for the Overseas Citizen of India
status and had written to KMC Mayor Sovan Chatterjee in this regard on
August 5.

The birth was registered by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and
Marriages, Alipore, on November 21, 1935. He was born of William Scarth
Carlisle Tully and Patience Treby.

"I was a bit doubtful when I first wrote to the Mayor for the birth
certificate. But today I am really overwhelmed by the response. I was
born in Calcutta then I went to London and again came back to New Delhi
for my job," Tully said.

*"Though I am a British, today I feel like more Calcuttan than ever
before," said Mr Tully.

Clearly, Mark Tully was and still is a British Citizen.

Hi All,

Dr Lawrence Gomes from Chinchinim is holding his solo painting

*The inauguration will take place on Saturday 21st November 2015 at
7 PM.

*Born and brought up in Goa, he is a practicing Gynaecologist who took
up painting as a stress relieving hobby and

turned it into a passion of realistic - theme art.

After the HSSCE in science at MES College, he went to complete his
MBBS from GMC-Bambolim. Thereafter, he joined the Indian Army as a
Medical Officer and served in the AMC for five years, completing his
commission in the rank of Major.
Settled in Goa at his ancestral village of Chinchinim, he lives with his
family & parents in his archaic Portuguese villa built jointly by his
grandfather & his grand-uncle priest. Married to Aureen, a Phd in

Having no formal training in art, he says,"I'm a look n learn artist,
wholly self-taught. I used to paint inhobby competitions as a child
in my community & school, but completely forgot about painting for the
sake of studies". He started painting five years ago in order to relax.
"I often lost myself for hours striving to paint better at the next

Re: [Goanet] Wondering how to become an author?

2015-04-21 Thread Joseph

Hi All,

This set me thinking ...

First Point: Which books on Goa will have the largest audience and
can also possibly have an overseas audience?

Second Point the cost: Firstly your time, if research is involved
(Specially outside goa) then travel and stay in that location e.g.
Bombay, Pune getting permissions for archive access and
photography/xerox.
Then event photographs (if covering festivals etc) or photographs of
heritage structure - do it yourself if you are are reasonably good
enough at it or hire a professional (Quite Costly)

or license photographs from Goa's well known photographers

Third: Making a draft

Fourth: contacting a publisher and getting an estimate for
publishing. (FN being an expert on this can through some light on
how much it will cost to print a paperback book of 400 pages around
3,000 copies)

Some of the topics in my opinion that could do well ...

1) On Goa's Heritage trail
2) Emerald Paradise of the Goa - All the natural spots Beaches,
Waterfalls and places unknown

3) Goa Carnaval - Origins, History and Celebrations over the Ages
4) Goa Shigmo Through the Ages
5)History of post Liberation Goa
6) Cultural Heritage of Goa
7) Catholic Festivals and observances in Goa
8) Hindu Festivals in Goa
9) Documentation of history of each place in Goa like Dominic Fernandes
has written on Mapusa
10) Books covering specific theme like Beaches of Goa, Forts of Goa,
Churches of Goa, Temples of Goa
11) Goa's Administration - Goa's Rulers through the ages from
Pre-Portuguese times to the Present

12)Prominent personalities of Goa through the Ages

I am sure that other readers of Goanet will have more ideas to share
with budding writers.

Anyone reading this and thinking of authoring a book? Well, the Government
of Goa has some small grants scheme. They offer upto Rs 25,000 to upcoming
authors. This is currently open only to those domiciled in Goa.

It is open to:
- Anyone based in Goa
- You can write on any topic, in any genre
- Grants are decided on by an official committee

What it means:
- They will give a grant of upto Rs 25k, maybe less.
- They will expect 100 copies of your book in return
- Plus an acknowledgement of the grant, printed in your book

The time frame:
- You need to submit to the Directorate of Arts Culture by April 30, 2015
- They will take (roughly speaking) 5-8 months to decide
- You have another 3-6 months to publish your book

Documentation needed
- Two copies of your manuscript (work-in-progress will do)
- Some official document to show you are Goa domiciled (e.g. voter card)
- The form completed, which can be downloaded from the site, or below.

The economics
- Rs 25k may not be enough for printing a book, but it fills a vital gap
- You can sell some copies to the library and to other readers
- If it's a good, non-fiction book with some potential, it's not tough.

If you miss this year's deadline (April 30), you could always aim for next
year

Any other questions? Feel free to contact me, off list. Some others you
might know might have also taken support of this scheme. In my view,
there's a fair chance of getting the support.

From a rough estimate, it seems that only a few homes in any village have
lions on their gates. In some villages, house after house (in parts of the
village) were built by Africanders. If what you believe is true, why do
some have lions and others not?

In Bardez, a lot of the 20th century affluence, I'd think, came from
migration. Specially to places like Africa. This was accelerated perhaps by
the existence of some of the early English schools in this region (Fr Lyons
at Arpora, Mater Dei at Saligao, Sacred Heart at Parra, etc); other parts
of Goa got English schools much later.

A better test would be to see if the homes with 'lions at the gates' in
Salcete (where affluence and grand homes came from sources other than
overseas migration earlier on, it would seem) belong to Africanders. That
might give you an idea of how right or conjectural (let's avoid binaries,
as VJP says!) you are.

I'm open to be corrected on the arguments above; but don't dismiss it with
a label please. FN

Dear Goanetters,

Today Goanet passes a remarkable milestone -- it's 20th anniversary!

Today, we take the internet for granted. We spend so much time on the internet
hashtagging memorieson Twitter and Instagram, following our friends on
Facebook, searching Google for everything buying stuff, trading emails, and so
on. The internet keeps us connected to the rest of the world at all times.

But 20 years ago, the internet as we know it was just getting started, and
people didn’t really know what to make of it. In those days the internet was
not as user friendly. But, a small group of managed to fine each other on
Internet Relay Chat and started a mailing list. The first mailing list was
really just people sending emails to my inbox prefaced with a *, and I'd
forward them on to users who signed up. After a year or so we had our first
mailing list program do the work for us. And, here we are today.

Goanet has remained a volunteer-driven operation. We've had many volunteers over the last
20 years. A few volunteers need to be singled out. No one has done more work than our
very own Frederick Noronha (FN). In addition to moderating the mailing list,
FN contributes immensely. Bosco D'Mello is another one of our moderators with 10-15 years
of service. Viviana Coelho also contributed 5-10 years of service.

These are huge contributions to the community. And, I thank each of them for
the time and effort they have given us. I also wish to thank all the other
volunteers who have contributed to Goanet.

Goanet has brought the international Goan community together. It has been a
platform for launching other very successful groups and projects. While Goanet
has not lived up to it's full potential it has still had an impact.

Folks, please volunteer in whatever capacity you can to help sustain our group.
We have an opportunity to make a difference in Goa and to support out
international Goan community. You don't have to be tech savvy to volunteer.
And, please donate to help sustain our growth. Every little bit counts.

I'll end here by congratulating all our members for making this possible.

Dear All,

I have noticed that for the last approximately one month I am not
able to tune in to Panaji A Radio station on MW i.e. 1287 KHz
at Siolim .
At sometimes when I am able to tune it it appears very weak. Even

Any one knowing why this is happening.

[Goanet] Rare UK honour conferred on Goan origin, Patricia Rozario

2014-05-25 Thread joseph fernandes
Patricia Rozario, a Mumbai born soprano of Goan origin, has been conferred the
prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Music (FRCM).

Rozario who has won several accolades since she came to Britain in 1975 to
study music, is now working to help raise standards of western music in India.
The soprano is the second Indian-origin after conductor Zubin Mehta to be so
feted by the college in its 131-year-old history.  At the fellowship ceremony
London based Rozario was described as having pursued a versatile career during
which her distinctive artistry has inspired over fifteen of the worlds leading
composers to write for her, notably Arvo Part and the late John Tavener.

Speaking to HT on Wednesday Rozario said that receiving the fellowship from
Prince Charles was a moving experience and that the Prince said he was very
happy that she had been recognized for her work.

The fellowship of the Royal College of Music is conferred on outstanding
figures in international music.  Past fellows include iconic composers,
singers, conductor and instrumentalists such as Yehudi Menuhin, Edward Elgar,
Holt and Alfie Boe.

Along with her pianist husband Mark Troop, Rozario has been training teachers
and students in India since 2006 in western music singing under an initiative
called Giving Voice Society.  The first concert featuring her Indian students
and conductors are scheduled for later this year.

[Goanet] Vote Responsibly - A Nice Story

2014-04-13 Thread joseph fernandes
Yes,  a bit too late for Goa, but none-the-less.

The Good Farmer`s Deadly Mistake

There was a poor farmer ,   was a very good man , worked hard too , but had no
child . He prayed to God to give him and his wife a nice little daughter . Soon
he was blessed with a lovely girl child . He was poor but treated her like a
princess . He worked  18 hours days all year , in sun and rain to get her the
best toys , clothes , education and  food . She too imbibed her fathers values
and  grew up to be a good caring human being . The farmer  even managed to send
her to  study  in a college in a  nearby city . She got some good   job offers
and  many  nice handsome  boys   wanted to marry her . But she chose to come
back to teach in the village school and said would marry only a kind hearted
boy who would let her look after her old father .

One day at the village school a  kid was bullying another kid , hitting him
with punches and  beating him with a stick . The farmers daughter , now the
school  teacher  stopped him . The boy complained to his father , who was a
very powerful person  . She was kidnapped,  and a few days later found dead ,
raped , her body mutilated .

The poor old farmer`s grief knew no bounds .  He went to the police station .
The police refused to file a complaint . He ran from pillar to post , nothing
happened . He  died of  shock .

The farmer  went to heaven ,and  asked God   God , when I  did no wrong ,
followed  what you said  my entire life , why did you do this to me ? Why did
my daugher have  to meet this fate ?

God too was shocked for a moment . Had he done something terribly wrong to some
very nice people who loved him dearly ?

He asked His angel to immediately bring the register of  the farmer`s deeds .
All his acts were good , except that he had voted for a very bad man in the
elections .

God  said to  him   I sent you many good persons to vote for . You always
voted a criminal , rapist , looter , rioter . What can I do ? Did I not give
you the power to stop them ? Your should have voted right !!

SO FRIENDS, THIS TIME VOTE WITH RESPONSIBILITY .

.

[Goanet] For the sake of India

2014-03-20 Thread joseph fernandes
If we  divide the (South) Goan vote, through multiple candidates (of different
parties), I am sure that even South Goa Lok Sabha seat will go to the BJP this
time.

So try and keep a united front against the BJP to defeat them at least in South
Goa.

Though I am against the corrupt Congress (and am for the AAP), in the
candidature of Reginaldo Alexio Lourenco, I wish that Goa Suraj and AAP should
withdraw their candidates.

The site once had an interesting sprinkling of non-Goans with little connection

debate taking place here. They contributed positively but have left due to
unwarranted criticism of what they wrote.

More posters than is normal wait to pounce on people who write their thoughts

writings seem to stir. Usually these critics write nothing of their own either
due to inability of thought or the little capacity to write outside of their

Now there is a preponderance of local politics and local issues highlighed by

No other population of liberated, once colonial people discuss their colonial

With the caveat that people in Goa have long since accepted their fait accompli

Goanet is still good for a good debate though the frequency of such interesting

Goanet has not looked for new direction either within itself or from outside.
Thus while other similar websites have reengineered their objectives, goanet
has more or less retained its avatar for the past 20 years. A pity, since the

Much of the stability that the site has enjoyed is from the long serving

[Goanet] Disquite in the Aad Aadmi party

2014-01-23 Thread joseph fernandes
the aam aadmi, not from the Ambanis or the Radias or the Shobhna
Bhartias.
They want him to talk about corruption but not do anything about it, something
Manish Tewari’s poetic flair would term “willing to wound but afraid to
strike”, an attitude as old as Chanakya and Kautilya which offers all of us a
catharsis via the good offices of Arnab Goswami and little else- but Kejriwal
is no respecter of Machiavelli or Chanakya, his vocabulary is limited because
he can only call a spade a spade, he is colour blind because he can only see in
black and white (the shades of greys can be left for the likes of Manu
Singhvi), and therefore he insists on striking, not just talking.
Is there any cause for surprise, therefore, at why the present dispensation,
both in and out of government, is rattled by this five foot four inch “insect”
from Ghaziabad? He is neither fish nor fowl, he defies understanding.
The establishment has made the supreme mistake of trying to counter him by
quoting the rules of the game (loaded in the former’s favour, naturally!) they
are past masters of- but Kejriwal has changed the rules, and now they don’t
know how to control him or neutralise him.
For the time being only Kejriwal knows the new rules, and he is springing them
on the carpet baggers one by one, catching them by surprise all the time.
Forget the English TV channels-they rarely get anything right. Forget the
Manish Tewaris, the Kiran Bedis, the FICCI spokespersons, the Minakshi Lekhis-
they are either scared witless or rank opportunists. What they all do have in
common, however, is that they have failed to see how the common man-the aam
aadmi-are gathering behind this dimunitive man with the perpetual cough.
The sincerity, integrity and commitment of this man is phenomenal, his capacity
to harness the anger and frustration of the people is limitless. His defiance
of accepted conventions and interpretations is not anarchy – it is nothing
short of a revolution. When the people have had enough of injustice,
callousness and indignity, they will not play by the rules of the rulers-they
will make new rules.
The French Revolution would not have happened if the existing rules had been
followed. Tehrir Square would not have happened if everyone swore by the old
rules. Changing the rules, Mr. Home Minister, is not anarchy – it is the
beginning of a people’s revolution.
The sooner we realise this the less pain in the transition, the less violence.
No matter how the stand-off in Delhi ends – capitulation by the Home Minister
and the Police, withdrawal of support by the Congress, imposition of
President’s Rule, police violence on the protesters and their eviction – one
thing is certain: Kejriwal is going nowhere.
He, and his paradigms, are here to stay and haunt our rulers. With his uncanny
understanding of the pulse of the people he has re-written the rules of
politics and governance.
There are now only two options Kejriwal has left the ruling class – either they
change, or the people will change them.
Avay Shukla retired from the Indian Administrative Service in December 2010. He
is a keen environmentalist and loves the mountains- he has made them his home.

A good issue indeed

we, as journos, approached them over a decade ago, they were more than

The problem is not technology or costs. The issue is that institutions of
power are unlikely to share the information and knowledge they're sitting

questioned.

In my view, we should not wait for the panchayats to do things. Every
village and city ward should set up their own presence in cyberspace,
either on a blog, electronic mailing-list or even a Facebook page.

Since we're not dealing with state secrecy here, the main concern should be
spreading the word. FN

Firstly a website domain name registration costs around Rs 750 per
year the hosting charges around 1500 per year (this varies as per
provider and quality of hosting and services offered) Total: Rs 2250
For a static site the the designing and setup charges would
typically be in the region of Rs 5,000 to Rs25,000 (depending on the
number of pages, requirements and person/firm doing the job)
For a dynamic website (website where the end user can update the

[Goanet] AP HC Ruling costs Info commissioners jobs

2013-09-13 Thread joseph fernandes
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/HC-strips-Andhra-Pradesh-of-its-four-information-commissioners/articleshow/22527444.cms

HYDERABAD: Describing the state government's approach in appointing four
information commissioners as whimsical, arbitrary and devoid of laid down
procedures, the AP High Court on Thursday set aside the appointments and
directed the state to conduct the selection process afresh and appoint new
commissioners in six weeks time.

The Kiran Kumar Reddy government had appointed Varre Venkateshwarlu, Lam
Tanthiya Kumari, Imtiaz Ahmed and M Vijayanirmala as information commissioners
on February 6 this year. All these four persons are from the Congress party and
though they are supposed to sever their political association with the party
before they join the information commission, they did not do so, said the bench
of Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice K C Bhanu while delivering
the verdict.

In selecting the new information commissioners, the state was directed to
comply with the provisions of the Right to Information (RTI) Act as well as the
judgments of the courts including the recent one by the Supreme Court in the
Namit Sarma vs Union of India case. The appointments were challenged by former
Union home secretary K Padmanabhaiah and the Forum for Rule of Law.

The commissioners, whose appointments were 'under challenge,' too said that
their affinity with the Congress will in no way affect their ability to
independently function as information commissioners. But this was not the
spirit of the law, which categorically says that they should cease to be
members of that political party. That did not happen in this case, the bench
said.

While Gandra Mohan Rao, the counsel representing Padmanabhaiah said that the
state did not follow the procedure prescribed by the Act before filling the
posts, K Vivek Reddy, counsel for Forum for Rule of Law, said that the required
empanelment with a list of eligible candidates was also not done.

The need for giving wide publicity while inviting applications for the posts
from persons of eminence in various fields and the need to keep the leader of
the Opposition in the selection process were totally ignored, they said. The SC
made it clear that the government has to follow these procedures while making
appointments to information commissions and despite that, the state of AP has
given a go by to the order of the apex court also, they said. Worse still,
the state has no material to show the basis for its conclusions in this case.
What were the names they considered, where was the notification that called for
the applications, where was the merit-wise recommendations of the selection
committee? In the absence of any such material, the whole selection process has
turned out to be a mere colourable exercise of power and was done basing on
extraneous considerations, Gandra Mohan Rao said. The bench agreed with the
arguments of the petitioners and
 nullified the appointments accordingly.

Earlier, governor ESL Narasimhan too had returned the file pertaining to these
appointments raising similar objections. But when a determined state sent back
to him the same file without considering any of his objections, the latter had
no option than to appoint them as information commissioners.

[Goanet] Do you have to pay wealth tax

2013-07-29 Thread joseph fernandes

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/personal-finance/Do-you-have-to-pay-wealth-tax/articleshow/21444111.cms

Very few taxpayers have heard of it and fewer pay it. However, this is no
reason for you to ignore wealth tax. This tax is payable if the market value of
certain assets exceeds 30 lakh. The tax is 1% of the combined value of such
assets.

Wealth tax targets unproductive, non-essential and idle assets. In the
crosshairs are two of the biggest obsessions of Indian investors: property and
gold. If you have bought a second house and not given it on rent, the value of
the property will be included while computing your wealth tax liability. Of
course, the outstanding loan taken to buy the property will be deducted from
this. Gold and silver, whether bought, gifted or inherited, will also be
included in the calculation. Even the cash you keep in your locker at home is
liable to wealth tax.

However, productive and financial assets, such as commercial property, bonds,
fixed deposits, stocks, Ulips, gold funds, mutual funds, your savings account
bank balance and gold exchange traded funds (ETFs) are exempt from wealth tax.
This tax is not taken very seriously by taxpayers because the Central Board of
Direct Taxes is busy with other, more important, ones, such as corporate tax,
income tax, service taxand excise. Wealth tax accounts for less than 0.25% of
total direct taxes and is minuscule in the total revenue collection. Last year,
it contributed 866 crore to the total revenue collection of 1,038,036 crore.

The taxman's disinterest is surprising because, although small, this is a
regular stream of tax collection . Unlike income tax, which is levied on
earnings just once, wealth tax is payable every year for the same assets. One
would have thought that wealth tax collections would see an exponential rise as
India's rich became richer. Instead, these collections have witnessed a slow
growth, rising 10% from 787 crore in 2011-12 to 866 crore in 2012-13.

This doesn't mean the taxman will not go after you for not paying it. Direct
tax collections have been below the target set in the budget and the CBDT is
under pressure to improve compliance. There is a stiff penalty for evading
wealth tax. Incorrect declaration of wealth can invite a fine of up to 500% of
the evaded tax. One can also be jailed for up to seven years if the tax due is
over 1 lakh. Remember, wealth tax evasion is easy to detect because the assets
are tangible and undervaluation is not difficult to prove.

Are you liable to pay wealth tax? Fill the table provided here to know if you
are rich enough to fall in its ambit. If the total figure exceeds 30 lakh, you
have to pay 1% wealth tax on that amount. This can be paid online or deposited
at any designated bank branch. The wealth tax return is to be filed using form
BA and the last date for doing so is 31 July. If the assessee is liable to
audit, the last date is 30 September.

[Goanet] How can nri-s invest in real estate in India

2013-07-23 Thread joseph fernandes

http://www.goodreturns.in/personal-finance/investment/2013/07/how-can-nris-invest-real-estate-india-188873.html?utm_source=Daily-Newsletterutm_medium=Email-Newsletterutm_campaign=23072013

According to the regulations of FEMA and RBI, NRI is permitted to make specific
investment in real estate. A NRI is allowed to do the following investment in
property:
1) Any immovable property can be purchased by NRI in India other than any
agricultural land, farm house and plantation property.
2) He can get any immovable property as mentioned above by gift from Indian
resident, Indian citizen residing outside India or person of Indian Origin.
3) Obtain any property by inheritance.
4) He can transfer immovable property to any resident of India by sale.
5) He can transfer any agricultural land, farm house or plantation land to any
resident of India by gift.
 6) He can also transfer his residential or commercial property by means of
gift to any person either residing in India or abroad or person of Indian
origin.
Sources of Finance

NRIs considers financial institutions as the easy option available in India for
purchasing any property; at the same time financial institutions consider NRIs
as their potential clients.
Financial institutions provide home loans easily, efficiently and sooner to
such people as they are very much prompt at the time of repayment. Furthermore,
the repayment can readily be done by inward remittance through the proper
banking channel.
If someone is already getting income in India from sources like rent or
dividend, he/she can directly repay the loan as well. Now RBI has also
predetermined these norms in home loan for Non residents who are looking
forward to buying any property:
A maximum of 80% amount is only financed by the financial institution. Rest
should be given by NRI himself.
The remittance of the amount for down payment can be done from the place of
residence by normal banking channels, i.e., NRO/NRE account in India.
Furthermore, the NRI has to repay his principal amount as well as interest part
from that similar channel only.
Tax Implications for NRIs looking for property in India
NRI has to shell out stamp duty as well as registration fees at the time of
purchase. He is entitled to avail all sorts of benefits at par with Indian
resident on the interest paid for the home loan.
However, the tax process becomes full of twists and turns if the property is
leased. As the amount of income received from such action comes under the head
of income from property, therefore, standard deduction is applicable as per
standard slab.
In this case, the NRI will have to pay the applicable tax if he is residing in
the country where worldwide income is taxable unless the country has Double Tax
Avoidance Agreement with India.
The special advantage for NRI is the amount which is paid for the interest of
home loan is deductible from NRI's taxable income without any upper limit. The
NRI is legally responsible for the payment of capital Gain Tax as prescribed
under the Income Tax Act, in case he sells off the property.

[Goanet] Indian Tax laws give NRI's a raw deal

2013-07-22 Thread joseph fernandes
, besides the cess.

More restrictions

Concessions: If an NRI opts for the concessional tax treatment, he is taxed at
a flat rate. However, in such a case, he cannot avail of any deduction of
expenditure or allowance under any provisions or claim benefit of cost
indexation for capital gains.

Investments

Apart from the higher taxes, NRIs are not allowed to invest in certain
instruments, such as thePublic Provident Fund. Certain scrips specified by the
RBI are also out of their reach.

NRIs constitute an important segment of the investing population. If the
government wants this section to bring in more investment, it should take steps
to remove these glaring anamolies in the tax structure. This is especially
important in the current situation, when therupee has seen a drastic fall
against the dollar. If NRIs are given the same tax treatment that resident
Indians enjoy, it will encourage this large segment of overseas population to
start investing in their home country.

[Goanet] Daya Shankar (Ex-Customs officer) no more

2012-08-12 Thread joseph fernandes

Following news item from Times of India, Mumbai:

An Indian Revenue Service Officer of the 1978 batch, Daya Shankar, who took on
the gold smugglers in the late 1980s died in Australia following a prolonged
illness on Sunday.

His contemporaries described him as talented, irreverent and eccentric. He was
known for his crackdown on the thriving gold smuggling networks in Daman, Goa
and Mumbai. A story that did the rounds then was that when he was on duty,
smugglers got themselves off loaded and airlines used to reschedule some
flights to go empty.  In 1988, don Dawood Ibrahim said in a magazine interview
that he wanted to work under Daya Shankar, if provided another chance to lead a
dignified life.

In 1992, he stood by his colleague, Coasta Fernandes, during a CBI probe
accusing him of killing then Goa Chief Minister Churchill Alemao's brother
Alvernaz.  The CBI held Fernandes guilty, but Daya Shankar fought for him and
the SC brought the persecution of Fernandes to an end.  Fernandes won a
presidential medal, an official said.

[Goanet] [WV] [JOSEPH CANISIUS DIAS' BLOG] BLACK WHITE LIES!

2012-07-29 Thread Joseph Canisius Dias
Leander was listening to TED TALKS last night. I was doing my meditation
and instead of asking him to use his headphones, I let my mind focus on the
talk instead of pursuing a thoughtless state of mind! It was about LIES and
how to spot a LIAR! As usual, we discussed this topic over dinner and I was
surprised how the 'modern liar' has mastered the art of deception even to
pass the lie detection test!

That made me mull over what the Bible had to say about lying -

Proverbs 6:16-19 says, These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are
an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed
innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be
swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he
that soweth discord among brethren.

Everyone tells a white lie on occasion, it's just a question of why. Some
white lies save relationships, some ease a hectic situation, and others buy
us time. The list could go on forever. Stretching the truth is a natural
component of human instinct because it's the easy way out. We all do it, so
there is no reason to deny it. “As long as we aren't hurting others or
breaking the law, these innocent lies can make life more pleasant”- is our
justification for our lies!

Deceit, lying, and falsehoods lie at the very heart of our cultural
heritage. As the moral climate of our society has been deteriorating, lying
has become a major problem. The business world is particularly plagued by
this problem--men's dishonesty with each other. Even God's ministers are
not immune and many of them are infected with it.

The Bible is filled with admonitions against being dishonest and lying. One
of the Ten Commandments states:

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Exodus 20:16

Let us examine our own lives to see if we are infected with the same
disease. What kind of witness are we to those around us? Are we deceived
and have we become liars ourselves? The Bible also lists this sin of lying
as one that can lead us to hell along with some other grievous ones.

Revelation 21:7-8 says, He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I
will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving,
and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and
idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth
with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

A LIE IS A LIE EVEN IF SPOKEN IN LATIN!

[Goanet] [WV] [JOSEPH CANISIUS DIAS' BLOG] THE EVIL EYE

2012-07-24 Thread Joseph Canisius Dias
It's been three days since Lorine left for Portugal to join her sister and
mother who are holidaying there. I could not join because of the deadlines
at work. My two sons opted to stay behind with me. Last night the topic at
the dinner table was 'evil eyes' and is it merely a superstition. Leander
popped that question and i had a hard time explaining the 'phenomenon'!

From my own experience as a child, specially growing up in Goa, where
people are pretty superstitious, i've had my fair share of 'evil eye'
attacks and the frequent runs to the 'disht-kan' (The lady who removed the
spell). I still remember her sitting outside her hut in Mandel in Margao,
rubbing some wierd smelling roots on a stone and spraying the water thrice
on the face with much force, accompanied by the 'i believe'.

Most of us in Goa has experienced this sometime or the other in their
lifetime (I believe?). My grandmother explained it to me as being the ill
effect of somebody's envy or praise. It is important to understand that the
person who praises the child is not evil per se. IT JUST HAPPENS!

A typical account of such a mishap might be: I dressed the baby in new
clothes and took him to town and a woman who has no children saw him and
said, 'Oh, what a pretty child!' and as soon as we got home he began to
vomit! The evil in these accounts of the evil eye indicate that it is
thought to be situational in nature and that it is caused by a failure to
restrain envy within proper social bounds.

Mentions of the evil eye in the Bible clearly refer to the role that envy
and covetousness play in its development. We can read in Proverbs 23:6 Eat
thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his
dainty meat and likewise in Proverbs 28:22, He that hasteth to be rich
hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.

Then over in Mark 7:21-22, we see that the early Jewish Christians believed
in evil eye, for it is written there that when Jesus Christ lectured about
defilement, he told his followers that evil eye comes forth from a man and
defiles him just the same as if he had committed a physical crime: From
within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries,
fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit,
lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.

There are many 'cures' followed by people in various countries, some of
which may be: Olive oil dripped into water with prayer...Wax dripped into
water with prayer ... Coals or match heads dropped into water with
prayer ...Passing a whole raw egg over the face, then breaking
it ...Breaking an egg in a dark, shadowed place, unseen ...breaking an egg
and drawing a cross on the victim's forehead ...Victim drinks three sips of
holy water ...Victim is bathed in holy water

As for me, i believe in one tried and tested method which has never failed
me. It is to confess Holy Scriptures and certain assertions daily. For
example: I AM THE BODY OF CHRIST, SATAN HAS NO POWER OVER ME, SICKNESS HAS
NO PLACE IN ME.

[Goanet] [WV] [JOSEPH CANISIUS DIAS' BLOG] TRUE SUCCESS ?

2012-07-18 Thread Joseph Canisius Dias

TRUE SUCCESS

What is true success? Let's examine Scriptures to find out!

King Solomon, a man to whom God gave great wisdom, wrote most of the
Proverbs such as:

“Do not toil to acquire wealth; be wise enough to desist. When your eyes
light upon it, it is gone; for suddenly it takes to itself wings, flying
like an eagle toward heaven” (Proverbs 23:4–5, RSV).

“Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my
heart from any pleasure, for my heart rejoiced in all my labour; and this
was my reward from all my labour. Then I looked on all the works that my
hands had done and on the labour in which I had toiled; and indeed all was
vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun”
(Ecclesiastes 2:10–11).

Again, there are the following instances when...

The mother of James and John—two of Jesus' disciples—came to Him with a
request: “She said to Him, 'Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one
on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.' But Jesus
answered and said, 'You do not know what you ask'” (Matthew 20:21–22). He
then told them that those positions were for those chosen and “prepared by
My Father.”

“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who
are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you;
but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And
whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave—just as the
Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a
ransom for many” (Matthew 20:25–28).

The greatest is one who is a true servant—one who truly cares for and helps
others! Notice that it was the Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, who took
little children up in His arms and who stooped over to wash the feet of His
disciples. You can read about that foot-washing service in John 13.

Jesus' example was one of service, sacrifice and love. “For if when we were
enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more,
having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Romans 5:10).

Whatever position we may hold in this life, we will never find true success
unless we have an attitude of godly service toward others. One of the
measures of true success is the degree of godly service one is willing to
give.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His
commandments, for this is man's all. For God will bring every work into
judgement, including every secret thing, whether good or evil”
(Ecclesiastes 12:12–14).

[Goanet] [WV] [JOSEPH CANISIUS DIAS' BLOG] PHOTOSHOPPING!

2012-07-10 Thread Joseph Canisius Dias
A few days ago, i spent a good hour at the photo studio. I had gone there
to 'photoshop' a friend's image with Justin Bieber. It was her birthday and
knowing she loved Justin, i thought i'd poke some fun at her.

Whilst i was waiting there for my turn, i saw a man getting his head
transported onto another body that was with a suit on. He wanted a photo
with him in a suit and the simplest way to do that was to photoshop the
image. Another 'pimply-faced' girl got her pimples removed. yet another
couple had their pic done as if they were sitting inside a beautiful house.

What scared me most was how we tend to do the same in the 'spiritual
sense', just to look good!

H ... Enough said!

[Goanet] [WV] A WISH

2011-12-22 Thread JOSEPH CANISIUS Dias
Dear friends, well-wishers and supporters,

I take this opportunity, along with my brother and partner (Cosme) in Word
Ventures (www.word.diaz.co.in) , to wish you a blessed Christmas and a
prosperous New Year! I have no doubt that you will continue to bless us
through your patronage in the new year too.

For those of you who will be in Goa during this festive season, please do
visit the shop (See footer for address).

I will be doing a *BOOK SIGNING* on the 30th of Dec 2011(whole day). I will
also conduct a FREE WORKSHOP for children in *'Cartooning and
Caricature'*at the shop from 3 pm onwards on the 2nd of Jan 2012.

Please do let your family and friends in Goa, know about these two events.

God bless you all!

*THE CHRISTMAS STORY*
*For thousands of years they tried to live a sinless life, yet in vain,*

*Perfection alluded them, too strong was sin's strain,*

* *

*They killed sheep, bullocks, and turtledoves, all as a sacrifice,*

*But nothing that they found to kill would ever really suffice,*

* *

*Once a year the high priest went in to the Holy of Holies, alone,*

*Wishing that for all the people, the sins God would atone,*

* *

*But this practice, at best, could provide a temporary solution,*

*This caused my God in heaven to make an awesome resolution,*

* *

*He came to a lady named Mary, who was a Nazarene,*

*Through her submission to God, His Son would come on the scene,*

* *

*He would be born in Bethlehem, to fulfill prophecy,*

*The star would shine brightly, for the three kings to see,*

* *

*We celebrate his birth on Christmas, but His story doesn't end there,*

*He went on to die on a cross, so that we could preach Him everywhere,*

* *

*God's Son, yes, became our ultimate sacrifice,*

*Behold the Lamb of God, who would pay the ultimate price,*

* *

*His blood came streaming down, that tree on Calvary,*

*For the remission of sins, for the salvation of you and me,*

* *

*They took Him down and buried Him in someone's else tomb,*

*satan thought he had us, but this death would be his doom,*

* *

*Three nights and three days would have to pass by,*

*He's alive, He's not there, would be the ladies' cry,*

* *

*For God rose Him up from the dead, with all power in His hand,*

*So that I could be delivered from sin, and join the Christian band,*

* *

*So when you open up your gifts, on Christmas day,*

*Take time to tell your kids the true meaning, and please take time to pray.
*

*United Goans Center Conclude their Prestigious Tournament*

*Malabar lift 36**th** UGC tourney for first time:
*

The spectators got to see an exciting game of football in the finals of the
36th UGC tourney between Malabar FC and Curtorcares on 11-11-11 at Shuwaikh
MOH grounds. The favorites Curtorcares were defeated by Malabar by a
solitary goal.

Both the teams started playing with a quick pace and looked threatening in
the initial minutes of the match. Malabar began to settle down and maintain
more possession on the ball and began to create some attacking chances. The
momentum began to shift Curtorcares way but the Malabar keeper made some
good saves. Minguel of Curtorcares received a good cross from the wing and
having beaten the last defender, shot wide of goal having only the keeper
to beat. Towards the end of the first half, a long range effort from Binu
of Malabar suprised the Curtorcares keeper and he had no chance of saving
it. Malabar went into the first half with a goal advantage. Sanal should
have double the lead but he did not make his shot count having only the
keeper to beat.

In the second half Curtorcares began to take charge and started looking for
the equalizer. They missed out on many chances but the defense and keeper
of Malabar stood firm and made sure there would be no equalizer. Braz who
has been the player standing out from Curtorcares all tournament was not
allowed any room to make any plays. They defended well against corners and
set-pieces and Curtorcares tried their level best giving it their all but
they could not find the back of the net after 90 minutes. The UGC
tournament is being conducted under the auspices of KIFF and refereed by
The KIFF referees Derrick, Victor, Edward and Arnold.

Don Bosco, KGA out Rising Stars, Malabar United and Goa Maroons advance
to the Semi Finals:

The first match was contested between Don Bosco and Malabar United. The
KIFF match officials were P. A. Tony, Bernard and Adolf. The start of
the match revolved mostly in the centre half as both teams tried to gain
possession, as Don Bosco began to settle, they started to look more
comfortable and were rewarded with a free kick which was well converted
into a Goal by Conrad no 4. Malabar in response attempted some long
range shots and were finally rewarded with a goal in the closing minutes
of the first half. The first half score was 1 -1. In the second both
the teams started to attack each other in search of the lead. Don Bosco
won a free kick which was taken by Steven but his shot was well saved by
the Malabar Goal keeper. Malabar made a change and brought in Noshad in
place of Shahli and started to dominate again until they won a free kick
which was shot wide. The score still remained the same at the end of the
final whistle and the game went into extra time. During the extra time
both team started to push each other in search of the winning Goal which
saw some rough tackles being made. Noshad from Malabar was shown a
Yellow card for a hard tackle and during the closing stages of the extra

P. A. Tony. The game went into penalties. For Don Bosco Alex and Michael

Kaltoraran continued to shine by scoring the only goals of the match.
KGA had some good chances but failed to convert it into a Goal. They saw
some of the efforts well save by the Rising Star Goal keeper. During the

*Rising Stars Edge Tournament Hosts: Malabar, Don Bosco and Curtorcares
Advance :

*

The first match from last week’s fixtures was contested between two new
teams: Gulf Cable and Malabar United. The KIFF match officials were Connie,
Ronnie and Edward. The start of the much revolved mostly in the centre half
as both teams tried to gain possession. As Gulf Cable began to settle, they
started to look more comfortable moving the ball around and created some
good chances. Malabar is response attempted some long range shots to trouble
the keeper. The first half remained scoreless but Gibu of Malabar made no
mistake scoring from a spot kick in the second half to take the lead as
their defender brought down the attacker in the penalty area. Juzer of Gulf
Cable had a really good chance to equalize the game but the keeper made a
full stretch save to deny him. Muneer of Malabar could have put the game
away but he shot wide having only the keeper to beat. A total of five yellow
cards were handed out in this match and Malabar have to be careful in the
next round.

The second match of the day was between Curtorcares and DHL. Curtorcares
maintained their good form in the tournament to secure a 2-0 win. No.6 Braz
continued to shine by scoring both the goals in this match. No.17 Jose had
another chance from a free kick but was unable to find the target. He played
a pivotal role for Curtorcares in supplying the ball to the fowards. No.6
Braz picked up both his goals in the second half. DHL had a few chances but
found it difficult to come back into the game after being two goals down.
Curtorcares now wait for their opponents in the semi-final stage.

The third match was between UG Strikers and Rising Stars. It was a closely
contested match between the two old rivals. Rising Stars scored took the
lead in twenty minutes from a long range effort from No.7 Arun. No.9
Thankapan double the lead shortly as the UG keeper failed to make a
regulation save. UG started to find their feet back in the game and replied
with a string of shots on goal but the Rising keeper did well to keep
everything out. UG made a double substitution during the second half and
were rewarded with a goal from No.4 Pontes. Alfred made some good moves in
the second half and was nearly rewarded. Rising attempted some more long
range shots in the second half to trouble the UG keeper.

The fourth match of the day was an exciting feature between AVC and Don
Bosco. AVC began to threaten as soon as the whistle blew off and made Don
Bosco defend a lot. Stevens header on goal line and some good defending from
Conrad at the back kept the scoreline to a draw till halftime. Don Bosco
began to play a better game in the second half and troubled the AVC keeper.
The KIFF match officials were John, Arnold and Romeo. In the second half,
Kevin Vaz of AVC had the best chance in of the match but his powerful shoot
was kept out by the keeper. There was not much separating the two sides and
after regulation time and extra time the game had to be decided by
penalties. AVC put in all their first four penalties and Don Bosco got in
only three out of four. It looked like AVC were going to take it away on
penalties but penalties is always a cruel way to end a game and AVC missed
their fifth spot kick and gave Don Bosco a golden opportunity to come back
in sudden death. Steven of Don Bosco took a cool penalty while Luciano of
AVC was not able to convert. Don Bosco will meet earlier winners Malabar in
the quarter final stage. For pictures and scores updates you can log onto

Re: [Goanet] doctors and corruption - Cure for Piles

2011-09-01 Thread joseph fernandes
While on the subject of Doctor's and Corruption, I bring my own personal
experience re treatment for piles.

My brother had acute piles problem for some years during which he had undergone
two operations (one laser at Juhu Mumbai) but the problem persisted.  He then
while reading a book - Home Encyclopedia by J B Lobo, 7th edition, page 293,
among with various cures listed for Piles, tried the following one and was
cured in 5 days:

Slice an Onion and mix it with curds and have it twice a day, for 7 days.  He
was cured in 5 days and has not experienced piles for the last 3 years.

A year back when I had Piles, I followed the above, but 3 times a day and was
cured in 3 days.

Additionally in our family we make it a point to have 5 or 6 small cloves of
raw garlic, sliced in tiny pieces and gulped down with water, before sleeping.
Garlic helps control blood pressure and reduce cardiac diseases.

Also drinking regularly,  Kokum Agal (not sweetened kokum sherbat) -  widely
available in Goa, diluted with water is also very good for health.  These are
from my own personal experiences.

Subject: ''Chalo Panjim for English Medium''

‘’Chalo Panjim with a Political touch’’

The ‘’Chalo Panjim’’ unity supporting English as Medium of Instruction has
demonstrated the capability and strength of the concerned parents in organizing
mass rallies in the interest of their children’s future. However these efforts
will be a pure waste since only education policy cannot guarantee bright and
prosperous future when the present legislators continue to loot and plunder,
and
function with corrupt and selfish motives. Today Goa is on the brink of
destruction from all spheres and how much goodies will be left for their
hapless
children to enjoy in the future? This rally had the spectacular support of many
wolves ranging from Monsarettes, Alemaos and Goudhinos disguised as shepherds
and leading guardians of the Goan sheep. This make me wonder whether this was a
political ploy keeping the next assembly elections in mind and to divert the
people's attention from the loot and plunder that is taking place ranging from
MOPA, mining, slums, to various custodial deaths and police-politicos-drugs
nexus. From the past experience, these effort from the parents will surely be
like a leaking tap with water running down drip, drip, drip as they run from
pillar to post to legislators who are only interested in filling their own
pockets. This has always been the farce and deceptive way of today’s MLAs
assuring control on crimes, drugs, rapes, migrants, slum dwellings in Zuari
Nagar moti dongor and fukat nagar, illegal mining, promising special status
and even promising the heaven and moon in Goa. Educated and concerned parents
should first realize that praying and calling upon uneducated, communal and
illiterate and criminal legislators cannot bring in a good education policy for
their offspring unless they elect the right people to guarantee this. Instead,
their efforts should culminate in a well organized unity on one platform to
announce their candidature or support for honest and integral people who will
uphold the dignity and respect of ethnic Goans who are fighting today for
justice and thier own survival through the various courts.

Dear all,

I would subscribe to Mr. Benedict Lobo's contention that it has become
a trend to oppose anything and everything these days, so that the real
issues affecting Goa are conveniently sidelined.

In the case of the Festival being held in Goa on Candolim Beach, it's
not the Fault of the organisers for holding such a Fest, but it's the
old Supply and Demand ethos that is the driving force behind such
Festivals be it Glastonbury, Woodstock, Leeds or wherever Music is
appreciated for what it's worth !!.

So One should not deny OUR Goan Music Lovers for this yearly Festive Season
experience in Goa or as Mr Benedict Lobo so rightly puts it as This
Cock and Bull story about drugs being sold at the Festival makes me
laugh. Come on people , we have spent half our lives living on the
Calangute-Candolim coastline.Drugs are sold everywhere in Goa and in
the least of places you will expect. The 'drug dealer' is not foolish to
sell dope at a public venue like the festival where he is being watched.

For too long , we Goans have been Whistling in the Wind about the
decline of Morality, Civility and Decency of Standards in in Goa due to
tthe prevailing conditions and most undemocratic forms of Governance in
Goa,

For once in our lifetime, Ixttoghots or as in English, friends, what is
needed to change our thinking is not the drip, drip of ways of opposing
anything and everything to stop this ROT and downward slide of Goa
going to the stray DOGS, of which there are plenty in Goa, but as Gandhi
once said, we Must be the Change and to
Change the things in Goa with a Zeal that the Great St Francis Xavier
Left us.

We should not do this by merely evangelising the Masses, but we
should look into OUR own Hearts by making or bringing about an
AWARENESS and complete RE-EDUCATION of our Peoples to Know Right from
Wrong and to Elect in true Goan Faith those Politician who have the
Integrity rather than Just Muscle Power or clad as WOLVES in Sheep's
Clothing !!

Only, if we do this then, will our road of HOPE in ourselves be
restored to the Promised Land of Milk and Honey we have been yearning
for so long, 50 yearsafter invasion be opened up for our TRUE
Aspirations to See the Golden side of once Peaceful anni Amchem Goem,
Viva Goa, Viva !!.

On hindsight, I may have Jumped the Gun by endossing the Sunburn

Obviously, as an Oversaes Goenkar, I must admit my sheer ignorance to

the reach of our local Goans. As he rightly puts it, it's more for the

But seriously, who LISTENS to the Voice (s) of REASON in today's Goa ?

[Goanet] UFC lift UGC trophy for Second time on Nov-5-2010

2010-11-09 Thread Joseph Gonsalves
*UFC lift UGC trophy for Second time*

* *

The 35th edition of the United Goans Centre final was played on MOH grounds
Shuwaikh, Kuwait under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation. It
began at 8:30am with the national anthem of Kuwait and India being played.
The chief guest Mrs. Valencia D’souza, brand manager of Trafalgar trading
and guest of honor Mr. Shibu Ninan, manager of national air cargo, KIFF
president Fidelis Fernades and all the presidents of different clubs greeted
the UFC and Goa Maroons players before the start of play.

Both teams began playing defensively and were looking to attack on the
counter. It would be Goa Maroons who would have the first shot on target
from a long ball provided by Sandy, but the keeper was equal to the task. It
would be UFC chance next as Hemanth Kumar stepped up with a shot on target,
but it did not trouble the keeper Gomes of Maroons.

Ten minutes into the game, Goa Maroons failed to clear the ball and no.8
Juzer Bankoda volleyed in a great shot to take UFC into the lead. UFC began
to dominate proceedings after the first goal and were passing the ball
nicely among them and kept more possession of the ball. Ian Dsouza and Alex
of Goa Maroons were kept busy at the back and they did well to repel all the
attacks from UFC. Goa Maroons were lacking in attacking options and did not
pose a threat to UFC in the first half.

Goa Maroons started the second half with a shot on target straight away by
Ian Dsouza and he would have another chance later on but he had sent over
the bar. All the spectators were expecting a comeback from Goa Maroons after
a great start to the second half. Goalkeeper Martin of UFC was kept busy
during the second half as Goa Maroons substitutes began to make an impact on
the game.

Teotonio Fernandes stood out as the wall of the back and kept Goa Maroons
away from scoring an equalizer. He was awarded the man of the match award
for his brilliant performance. Cajetan Godinho came in the second half and
has a record for being the longest player to have played without receiving a
card. He had a great attempt on goal placing the ball to the extreme corner
of the goal and the Maroons keeper Gomes made a full stretch dive to keep
the ball out. Late in the second half, Ricky Sebastian made a surging run
towards the orange goal and with a quick glance up took a good directed shot
surpassing the keeper but only to find the crossbar. This was the best
chance Maroons had in the game. In the end, the lone goal from Juzer would
be enough to separate the two sides and see UFC win back to back UGC finals.

Mr. Edwin D’cruz concluded the master of ceremony. Asst. General Secretary
Joseph Gonsalves thanked the chief guest and guest of honor for giving their
precious time in spite of their busy schedules. He also thanked individual
sponsors Marian Fernandes, Amaldo Fernandes, Nicolas Rodrgiues, Lawrence
Pereira, Vaclau D’cruz and all KIFF affiliated clubs and members. Guest of
honor, Shibu gave the runners up trophies to the individual Goa Maroons
players and finally the chief guest presented the winner’s trophy to the UFC
captain.

The top scorer of the tournament was bagged by Jagadesh of Indian Strikers.
Man of the match went to Teotonio Fernandes of UFC.
The Best Disciplined team went to DHL which was given in memory of late
president Joe Fernandes.
The housie prize was received by Mr.Agnelo Fernandes from vice president
Brigidio Fernandes.
The gifts for the referees were distributed by KIFF president Mr.Fidelis
Fernandes and the memento for the chief guest Valencia D’sozua was given by
President of UGC Pascoal Alfonso.

[Goanet] UGC writeup for semi-final

2010-11-01 Thread Joseph Gonsalves
*UFC and Goa Maroons Advance to Finals*

*
*

* *

The semi-finals of the 35th UGC Annual football tournament were played on 29
th October 2010, at Shuwaikh MOH ground under the auspices of K.I.F.F. The
first match was played between Navelim and United Friends Club and was
officiated by Edward, Joe, Tony and Conny. UFC started attacking right from
the word go and looked to have caught Navelim players by surprise by their
courageous start. UFC had a couple of shots on target and Brito the keeper
of Navelim failed to collect a long cross where UFC forwards were ready to
pounce on, but a brave effort from Brito made sure he got to the ball first.
Remedio of UFC played a key role in the middle and was providing the ball
nicely to his strikers up front. UFC defense was well organized and spread
out and Navelim was having a hard time to penetrate. Navelim had to take
long range shots to test the keeper and that’s exactly what they did.

UFC missed a golden opportunity to score in the 25th minute but the shock
was lacking in power and it was cleared by the last defender. And at the
other end, Dwarte of NYC provided superb crosses but some good UFC defending
did not allow any chances. UFC keeper Martin Dias was forced to come out of
his area and make some good saves when the ball was crosses inside the dee.

UFC was the dominant team in the first half and in the second half NYC had
more ball possession and more shots on target. Both teams increased the
intensity and it was Navelim who looked like they would score in the second
half. From their various efforts, they found the woodwork from Seby, who
also worked very hard upfront to try to find the winner. He had two shots on
target but the UFC keeper Martin was at his best and did everything correct
to keep the ball out of the net. The UFC defense was not holding up as it
did in the first half and Navelim begin to take advantage of it. The
shortage of goals resulted in more cards flying out to both teams and
rightly so to players that did not play to the whistle. UFC had a great
chance towards at the end of the second half to clinch the winner but no.15
Xavier missed narrowly from a tough shot.

The game went to extra-time to try to break the dead lock and Navelim
continued marching towards goal but UFC keeper who was the man of the match
on this day continued making great saves to deny NYC. The match had to move
into penalties and all UFC players – Antonio, Cajetan, Remedio and Edwin
took calm and composed penalties and made no mistakes. Navelim were unlucky
on the other hand as Alfred hit the post and the ball went straight to the
keepers hands and Pires shot was saved by Martin to deny Navelim and secure
UFC a place in the final, second time in a row. *UFC 5 - NYC 3*

The second match started at 9:30 am. No team was able to take control early
and both teams maintained equal possession. Both teams did a good job in
defending well in the early half. Ian D’souza of Goa Maroons made nothing
easy for DHL and cut off all the crosses and stopped all the through balls.
Goa Maroons and DHL were both playing without key players due to injuries,
suspensions and travel plans. DHL began to settle in the game and started
passing the ball nicely among themselves. No.6 Vincent of DHL played a good
attacking role up front for DHL and provided Valenky a great chance who
missed by inches with his shot. For Goa Maroons No.16 Sandy was playing a
pivotal role in midfield. Jerry of Goa Maroons had a good chance in front of
goal but his shot was sent wide of the target. The first half ended with no
goals for either team.

In the second half, DHL on a couple of occasions kept the ball for too long
in the Goa Maroons dee without taking a shot. Fifteen minutes into the
second half, a miscued header from a DHL player beat the goalkeeper and
found the back of the net. Goa Maroons took the lead after that mistake from
DHL and the match began to change drastically. The match picked up pace
after the first goal. DHL did not look like that goal was going to stop them
and they played some good football to try to find an equalizer.

Godfrey Aguiar of DHL missed two heading opportunities from some good
crosses he had received. He had the best chance for DHL to change the
outcome of the game. Goa Maroons started moving forward and found the post
twice from a long range effort from Philip and Joseph. DHL were lucky those
did shots did not go in as it would change the match. DHL tried till the
final whistle blew but they were not able to find the equalizer. The match
was officiated by Pascoal, Rosario, Conny and Zico. Goa Maroons will meet
United Friends Club in the finals next week.
