Re: [Goanet] Corruption in Goa
Leon Trotsky once wrote "You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you". Many Goans have been clueless and indifferent to the land war being waged against them till it hits their doorstep and then they wake up. There is a global land war being waged against ordinary citizens by their own governments - everywhere, even is so-called democracies. An attack on rights, income, primarily with the end goal of usurping land and its related resources. In the last 20 years, the land wars have come to Goa and ethnic Goans are badly losing the war. Not only is the government lined up against them but powerful outside forces collude with Goa's own building and mining mafia. And let's not forget many "journalists" are either the front for the land mafia or clueless as to what is going on, either way does not reflect well on "journalism". Only a few are not timid or compromised. Look in any direction in Goa and there is a land scam in progress. And Goans have been complicit along with the legal profession which helps with the "paperwork regularisation" (land scams cannot happen without lawyers). Even diaspora Goans refuse to assist their own family in Goa and would rather sell ancestral land to a non-Goan rather their own family (who by the way may not always be angels). Or the other stupidity happens - donate land to the church/temple which in turn engages with the land scammers. You reap what you sow. Re: [Goanet] Corruption in Goa - athing of the past ?
NO, DEFINITELY NOT !!! Corruption starts at the lowest level. You cannot get anything done at the very lowest level unless you grease some palms. It is blatant and despicable. As someone who abhors corruption and bribery, I had to come to terms with the situation by promising a "bakshish" if the work iscompleted to my satisfaction. I still feel guilty, but I need to get my work done. I don't think that corruption will ever be rooted out in India !

[Goanet] CORRUPTION IN GOA IS NOW AT ITS PEAK
The alleged 6 crore Louis Berger kickback is peanuts compared to the astronomical riches the current ruling BJP politicians in Goa and their cronies have and continue to amass. Manohar Parrikar while Chief Minister the government had paid the same Louis Berger a whopping Rs 14 crore towards the Mopa Airport techno-feasibility study.Only Manohar Parrikar could enlighten us on how deep his cut was. What we have been witnessing over the last three and a half years is organized daylight rampant corruption with the Government intentionally having kept Goa without a Lokayukta and Information Commission as well. The CBI needs to interrogate Manohar Parrikar, Laxmikant Parsekar, Atmaram Nadkarni amongst others to unearth the mountain of ill-gotten wealth acquired. It has been a tale of rags to riches for this most corrupt government in Goa’s history. That was an interesting article by ericpinto. I should like to read the book I agree that corruption is debilitating factor whether it be Goa or India or whereever. Having said that corruption exists everywhere. There is petty courruption and big time corruption. Any form of corruption should be frowned upon and individuals can make a difference. I recall having to register my son at the Church for "zone". It is a simple task. An official from Mapuca turned up to do the registration. It was not a pressureised job given that I was the only customer there. The man said came straight out with it at the end of the registration of name and address. Would I provide "some emoluments". I was not quite prepared for this and feigned ignorance and then said NO. He was not a Goan which somehow mitigated my embarrassment. I think we can all do something to prevent corruption. After Nigeria and Pakistan, Kenya is considered to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Erstwhile man Joseph Karanja set the world alight by doing something about it. He is well worth a read. He is lawyer who studied in India who felt he had to do something for his country. http://www.GOANET.org International Cuisine Conference on Traditional Asian Diet Panaji, Goa, September 2-5, 2007 - http://www.indologygoa.in Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org Prof. M. N. Pearson of the Univ. of Sydney has written extensively on Portugal and Goa. He expands on the political and military defeats suffered by Portugal in the East by looking at administrative weakness, aka 'corruption', as a contributing factor. I now quote : Some perquisites, some peculation, were part of all administration in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is when they shade over into excess, into abuse, that we see a contribution to decline. In all Portuguese forts, at least a third of the soldiers on the books were phantoms whose pay was drawn by a very real and very corrupt commander. In 1550, a captain of a major fort like Mallacca, Hormuz or Sofala could make a 30,000 cruzados in a year. This had risen to 300,000 by century end, all from private trade and extortion. The effects were serious, both local traders and Portuguese casados fled inland to escape their rapacious fellow countrymen. Casados abandoned fine houses in Bassein by 1630, matched by miltary desertions The New Cambridge History of India, The Portuguese in India. Cambridge University Press.
