Re: [Goanet] Mushrooms in Goa
OBS: the straw must be boiled through dried well. I boiled it in our big bhan that we use to boil paddy in. The result was excelent. But I had brought in the spawn package from Sweden. I think it is the button mushrooms that need the dung for their cultivation. Thank you, Tony. Hope it picks up as a cottage hobby. If the buttons were not photophobic, they might perhaps have spawned across our former 'well fertilized' floors, in Goa !! eric. [Goanet] Mushrooms in Goa
In the past, there have been efforts to grow and sell mushrooms in controlled conditions in Goa. My co-villager Eric DeSouza was also into mushrooms, till his life was cut short unfortunately young in an accident. Recently, I've come across D.R. Kurade's 'fresh button mushrooms' from Zuari Foods Farms Pvt Ltd being sold in the local shops in Saligao. The packet says Zuari Foods' office is at 373 D B Marg at Miramar. Ph 2465222 Email sangam_...@sancharnet.in Wonder if anyone knows more about this mushroom outlet, and other outlets selling their products. A 200 gms packet costs Rs 24 (inclusive of all taxes), but you could buy one for even Rs 20. Dr Nandkumar Kamat, a man of many interests (from environment to Goaology), but a microbiologist in his official worklife, has also worked on mushrooms. If I'm not mistaken, his PhD thesis was on this subject too. FN -- FN * http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com http://twitter.com/fn Never let a computer know you're in a hurry. - Unknown
Re: [Goanet] Mushrooms in Goa
Tony - I remember reading about cow/horse dung !! eric. On a DIY note, some time back the Agriculture Department was encouraging the cultivation of oyster mushrooms. These are grown on paddy straw which is made sterile and then seeded with the spawn. The crop takes around 21 days and the winter months are most suitable for this. I used to cultivate oyster mushroom regularly for a number of years. The results were very encouraging. You can cultivate the mushrooms any where even under the eaves or in a corner of the house. It does not require sophisticated technology. Simple materials - paddy straw, plastic bags, spawn, a little effort and patience is what is needed. The spawn used to be available at Lulu's farm in Anjuna and later at ICAR at Old Goa. Perhaps Miguel Braganza can do a write up on the methodology. Regards, Tony de Sa
