Re: Combo box in GWT2.4?

2012-05-18 Thread Isaac Truett
I played around with a ComboBox implementation long ago (circa GWT 1.6).
It's actually built on top of a modified SuggestBox. I wouldn't bet on it
working in 2.x as-is, but it's Apache licensed so do as you will with the
source under those terms.

Re: Simple GWT sample code from Eclipse does NOT run in Chrome!

2011-10-03 Thread Isaac Truett
GWT apps work fine in Chrome for me. You'll have elaborate on the problem
you're seeing. Just saying it doesn't display properly doesn't help diagnose
your problem. Does the JS console show anything? How about the Developer
Tools' Network tab? Any resources failing to load? Or is this just an
aesthetic problem - alignment or font size or something like that?

Re: Debugging in production mode

2011-09-22 Thread Isaac Truett
Laura,

I would recommend gwt-log first and
foremost for debugging production code. For setting -style in GPE, see
the User's
Guide . Also, check
your browser's console. There may simply be a JavaScript error or a file
that isn't being served properly by your production server.

This actually has nothing to do with GWT. You have Google App Engine enabled
for your project. GAE restricts your access to certain Java classes,
including JDBC drivers. Have you read the GAE Developer's Guide as the error
message suggested?

Re: Where to host GWT based web site

1. GWT applications don't require a Java back-end, so technically speaking
any web host that lets you upload HTML and JS should be able to host a GWT
application.

2. Google App Engine.

Re: Using TextResources in UiBinder

Looks like ui:text was added last year. There's also a ui:safehtml a few
months ago, but that doesn't appear to have made it into a release yet (?).

@David Is there documentation for UiBinder beyond Declarative Layout with
UiBinder<http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/doc/latest/DevGuideUiBinder.html>
that
I'm just not finding? I still can't find mention of ui:text outside of Group

used to. It would be helpful to have a complete listing of supported
elements.

Using TextResources in UiBinder

2011-07-14 Thread Isaac Truett
I want to include a block of text from a ClientBundle's TextResource in a
UiBinder template.

Logically, I want this:

http://dl.google.com/gwt/DTD/xhtml.ent";>

{res.myTextResource.getText}

But this just prints the literal "{res.myTextResource.getText}". And yet
this:

http://dl.google.com/gwt/DTD/xhtml.ent";>

... yields the content of myTextResource in the ID of the div.

So, is there some voodoo hidden somewhere that allows me to use {res.foo}
notation outside of an attribute? All of the examples shown in "Declarative
Layout with UiBinder" are for setting attributes. If this isn't currently
possible, is there a reason not to allow what I'm trying to do? Or is there
a better approach that is equally or more concise?

Thanks,
Isaac

Cannot read property 'com_google_gwt_i18n_client_DateTimeFormat_patternParts' of undefined

2011-05-18 Thread Isaac Truett
I'm at a lost to explain this JavaScriptException that occurs when trying to
parse a date. It works perfectly in DevMode, but once compiled I get this
error:

(-:-) 2011-05-18 14:57:35,044 [FATAL] Uncaught Exception:
com.google.gwt.core.client.JavaScriptException: (TypeError): Cannot read

)

The offending JS is the for loop in the following snippet.

function
com_google_gwt_i18n_client_DateTimeFormat_$parse__Lcom_google_gwt_i18n_client_DateTimeFormat_2Ljava_lang_String_2ILjava_util_Date_2ZI(this$static,
text, start, date, strict){

  parsePos =

  abutPat = -1;
  abutStart = 0;
  abutPass = 0;
  for (i = 0; i <
java_util_ArrayList_$size__Ljava_util_ArrayList_2I(this$static.com_google_gwt_i18n_client_DateTimeFormat_patternParts);
++i) {
part =

i), 85);
if (part.com_google_gwt_i18n_client_DateTimeFormat$PatternPart_count >
0) {
  if (abutPat < 0 &&
part.com_google_gwt_i18n_client_DateTimeFormat$PatternPart_abutStart) {
abutPat = i;
abutStart = start;
abutPass = 0;
  }

The stupid part is that if I try to reduce this to a minimal case, the error
disappears. I've compared the JS produced by the failing project and the
minimal attempt to reproduce and found that this snippet above is identical.

While I'm digging deeper, I thought I'd throw this out to you all. Does
anyone have any idea what could cause this$static to be undefined in web
mode but work properly in DevMode?

Thanks.
Isaac

Current state of crawlability in GWT

2011-05-16 Thread Isaac Truett
What's the current state of crawlability in GWT? Is it all still done by
hand? I recall there was some work on a CrawlableHyperlink that was
abandoned, and I thought there was a Servlet written at some point that
could automatically serve up HmlUnit snapshots, but I can't find that now.
Are there plans to make crawling "just work" with Places and such?

The ImageBundle provides the little inverted triangle icon. If you

Re: "combobox" - combination of list- and suggestion box

2011-04-19 Thread Isaac Truett
I did use my own image for ComboBox. It can be overridden if you want
to use your image instead.

I think you're confused about ListBox. It's just a GWT widget wrapper
for an HTML select element. The button image isn't something that
comes with GWT, it's the browser's look and feel. If you want to
create a button that looks like the browser's select element button,
go ahead. You'll want to create a different image for each browser and
use deferred binding to show the proper one in each permutation.

Re: "combobox" - combination of list- and suggestion box

2011-04-18 Thread Isaac Truett
I wrote a ComboBox based on the GWT 1.6 SuggestBox back in 2008. There
have been a lot of changes since then, so I would be surprised if my
implementation works with newer versions. The code is Apache 2.0
licensed. If you want to use any of that old code according to the
terms of that license, here it is:

I think if this makes your list of things to get really pissed off about,
then life must be pretty good.

Someone who works on GWT gets a writing credit on a book about GWT; that's
not something to get upset over.

It sounds to me like you're editing ClientCallDetails.html in the compiler
output instead of the source directory. You probably want
src/com/sample/project/public/ClientCallDetails.html.

Re: GWT app looks ugly in IE6

2010-07-22 Thread Isaac Truett
GWT doesn't promise to make your application look the same on all browsers.
It does try its very best to make sure that the JS it produces functions the
same across browsers, and doesn't leave any nasty side effects, leak memory,
or anything like that.

There may be some cases where GWT will leverage CSS "tricks" on each browser
to achieve a result (although I can't think of any such cases off the top of
my head), but that doesn't mean that GWT will take steps to ensure that all
of your CSS is magically transformed into something that works on any
browser. For one thing, that's out of scope, and for another it isn't
possible. Some things in CSS just aren't supported, especially in older
browsers.

Yes, there are limitations. The HTML for a Button would not include
registered event handlers, for example. You generally don't want to create
widgets, reduce them to HTML, and then try to insert that HTML into another

Moorsu,

Sorry to leave you hanging on StackOverflow. I didn't see your code sample,
as I've just explained over
there
.

This behavior is described in issue
#1617.
In a nutshell, you need to set the handler and then defer the rest of
onModuleLoad to the next event cycle.

GWT.setUncaughtExceptionHandler(new ClientExceptionHandler());
Scheduler.get().scheduleDeferred(new ScheduledCommand() {
@Override
public void execute() {
startApplication(); // causes an exception
Window.alert("You won't see this");
}
});

Hope that helps.

You don't need to deploy gwt-dev.jar, so there shouldn't be any conflict
with your other library.

I am sorry to hear that you're having trouble working with GWT. Have you
followed the Getting Started with the GWT
SDK section
of the project's Google Code page?

If you're still having problems, perhaps you could describe in more detail
what is happening.

2010-04-06 Thread Isaac Truett
Thanks, Miguel!

John, I'd suggest trying to run com.google.appengine.tools.enhancer.Enhance
from the command line and see if you get the same error. See Enhancing Data
Classes at the docs URL Miguel provided. And you should be able to get the
classpath that Eclipse constructs from your project's build path by running
Development Mode and using the technique Kathrin provided. I'd start with
enhancing just one class file and see if it gets tripped up by the length of
the classpath.

John,

This may be completely out of left field, but has your classpath grown
recently? I've known java/javaw to fail due to excessively long classpaths.
Even just moving files up a few directories can make the difference.

Code splitting report dependencies

2010-03-04 Thread Isaac Truett
I'm working on code splitting a GWT 2.0.0 app. Things are not splitting
where I expect them to, so I'm looking to the compile report for help.
According to the
documentation
I
should be able to "click on the class" to "look at a chain of dependencies."
But after I click on a package in the breakdown for the initial download,
none of the classes listed are hyperlinks.

Is this a reading comprehension fail on my part? Where're the dependency
pages?

This question comes up with every release, it seems. The GWT team
doesn't maintain GWT versions in the maven repository. I don't know
the name of the person who does, but you might be able to find it in a

There was a SuggestBox enhancement in trunk last month that abstracts
out a SuggestionDisplay. You should be able to implement a
SuggestionDisplay that gives you the access you need.

Re: SuggestBox drop down button

I played around with this idea a while back. The result is available
on Google Code (link below). It's Apache 2 license, like GWT, so you
can use it on those terms. It was written in the GWT 1.6 era and I'm
not actively developing the project at this time, but please do leave
any feedback you may have. A little outside interest might be just
what I need to get back into it.

Re: Multiple RPC requests, onSuccess() order/concurrency

2010-01-12 Thread Isaac Truett
Hi Mike,

Are you sure the responses are being handled concurrently? JS is
indeed single threaded, so you should be seeing those responses
handled sequentially, although the order in which the requests will
return is not guaranteed.

Based on your description, I would suggest disabling the button after
sending the request. In both onSuccess() and onFailure() you can
re-enable the button.

Hope that helps.

If I understand your issue correctly, I think you could make it work
by having your AWrapper constructor call
GWT.create(AWrapperImpl.class) and delegate all of AWrapper's methods
to the AWrapperImpl. That brings generators into the mix without
creating a burdensome API.

Make sense?

Re: UnsatisfiedLinkError on Production Machine

2009-12-22 Thread Isaac Truett
You're trying to call a JSNI method on the server. That won't work.
You get an UnsatisfiedLinkError because JSNI uses Java's native method
syntax. On the server there is no native implementation of that
method. You'll need to use a different MD5 implementation on the
server.

No, it doesn't change the compiler output. Wildcard imports are
considered to be a poor coding practice by many Java developers.

Have you done a clean build and deploy since downgrading? It sounds to

Re: Can java client use GWT RPC?

2009-12-15 Thread Isaac Truett
Hello Andrey,

No, there isn't a simple way to use GWT RPC outside of the browser.

Your best option is to write your server logic independent of any
particular protocol. Then you can write multiple protocol
implementations such as GWT RPC, JSON, plain HTTP, or even direct
sockets, that all share the same business logic.

Re: How to detect mouse down in an AbsolutePanel?

2009-12-14 Thread Isaac Truett
Amir,

It looks like you've created a class that is both an AbsolutePanel and
a MouseDownHandler, but do you ever call addMouseDownHandler() to make
the class handle its own events?

On a design note, you will probably want to avoid implementations such
as this and use anonymous or inner classes as handlers instead. With
your current implementation, your class could be made to listen to
mouse events from any source other then itself, which I don't think
was your intention.

Re: Compiler Performance

2009-12-14 Thread Isaac Truett
Hello Artyom,

GWT 2.0 (and every other major release since I've been following the
project) includes new compile-time optimizations. These optimization
take time to run. That could account for some of the increased compile
time you're seeing. Another thing to look at is the number of
permutations you're generating.

To reduce time spent on optimizations you can use the -draftCompile
option. This is helpful for builds during development since you aren't
going to be as concerned about runtime performance or minimized
download size. Just be sure to turn off -draftCompile for the final
release!

You can reduce the number of permutations during development by
building only for a single browser and language. And using the GWT 2.0
Development Mode will allow you to debug directly in your browser of
choice and requires only a quick refresh to see your latest
client-side changes, saving you from frequent compilations.

Re: Modules Architecture Newbie Doubt

2009-12-14 Thread Isaac Truett
Hi Ricardo,

I would suggest looking at navigation more like a Swing or other
desktop app rather than a page-centric traditional webapp. In a
typical Swing app you would probably write a "launcher" class that has
a main() method which constructs your application's window and
populates it with a menu, status bar, and one or more content panels.
Your EntryPoint is like that launcher. When the module loads, your
EntryPoint would create the login screen. Your login probably calls a
GWT-RPC service and then on success your callback will hide/destory
the login page and show your other content. Alternatively, you might
be looking to include history support in which case your callback
probably just sets a new history token and then lets your history
handler set up the new "page." Check out the samples that come with
the GWT SDK download for some ideas of how that all works.

Re: Controlling desktop windows size and position.

2009-12-02 Thread Isaac Truett
Patrick,

GWT can do anything that HTML, JavaScript, and CSS together can do in
a browser. The server in your setup is the entity that will be
interacting with the OS to manipulate other processes. Once you get to
the server, you're really outside the realm of GWT and you're free to
do whatever you want with Java or whatever server-side language you
choose.

So to answer your first question: no, GWT does not have functions
equivalent to VB's FindWindow, ShowWindow and MoveWindow. You'll want
to look for a Java library for that.

Hope that helps.

Hosted (now "Dev") mode does allow sockets from server classes. App

Re: gwt suggestbox.

2009-10-29 Thread Isaac Truett

As Thomas said, you'll need to write a SuggestOracle that returns an
empty list of suggestions for queries shorter than x characters. And I
wanted to add: if you want to keep the functionality of the
MultiWordSuggestOracle then you can have your oracle delegate to a
MuliWordSuggestOracle instance for queries that are long enough. As I
recall MultiWordSuggestOracle is not amenable to subclassing, and
composition is a better strategy anyway.

Re: Session-Confusion

2009-10-26 Thread Isaac Truett

Philipp,

Use your own ID instead of or in addition to the session cookie. Send
that ID with each RPC request so that the server knows which instance
of your app it is talking to.

You can use separate packages as long as you add them to your source path.

Re: List Serialization Error

2009-10-02 Thread Isaac Truett

Well, that could be a perfectly valid argument if stacktraces were
capable of lying. Something's null. Denial won't get you anywhere.
Something on line 19 is null. Use your debugger and find out what,
then trace backwards until you find where/why. Or attack it from the
other direction: start with a blank slate and add code piece by piece
until you reproduce the problem. The last thing you changed is
probably the culprit.

Re: dialog box background - BUG?

2009-09-29 Thread Isaac Truett

John,

I'm assuming that by "basic GWT project" you mean a project created
with the New Web Application Project wizard in the Google Plugin for
Eclipse, since that seems to fit with your description. If that
assumption is correct, then you're not looking at a bug at all. The
CSS file created by the wizard sets a width of 400px on DialogBoxes:

.gwt-DialogBox {
  width: 400px;
}

You have a 400px-wide dialog with a smaller table inside it, allowing
the background to show through. I'm sure you could've discovered that
for yourself. If you'd really stripped things down to the smallest
possible reproduction case, you would've found that the problem
disappeared when you removed that CSS rule. You also could've
discovered it by examining your application in a DOM inspector such as
the Firefox plugin Firebug.

Re: Link static html elements with GWT

2009-09-24 Thread Isaac Truett

I think you might have better luck with the Anchor.wrap() method.
After wrapping the elements in an Anchor Widgets you can add
ClickHandlers.

Stefan,

Are you aware that you have your project configured to use Google App
Engine? App Engine will not let you open a socket to a database.

Hi Maks,

I think you would be better served by using a FlowPanel and adding
multiple Hyperlinks or Anchors to it. The example you've provided
doesn't allow for separate ClickHandlers on the two elements.

Hi Jan,

I'm not a maven user. You might have better luck on a maven forum. But
the stacktrace you provided suggests to me that you have two different
versions of GWT on your classpath.

Hope that helps.

Re: GWT RPC - how to call an existing GWT Rpc Servlet from a simple class (not client code)

2009-09-18 Thread Isaac Truett

Take all of the logic out of your RPC servlet and put it in another
class. Call that class' methods from your RPC servlet's service method
implementations. Write another interface, such as a plain servlet, and
have it call the logic class methods, too. In the Java desktop, call
the non-RPC interface (e.g. via HttpConnection).

The first step in reporting a bug is to create the smallest possible

Basically, no. You can't do what you want to do. You can't connect to

Re: Deployment with Tomcat without nasty "404 Not Found" error?

2009-09-15 Thread Isaac Truett

If you want to avoid downtime then I agree with Andrew; you basically
have to have a backup server. On the other hand, if all you want to do
is present something more user-friendly than a 404 page, you could run
Apache or some other web server in front of Tomcat and have Apache
serve up an "out to lunch" page when you're doing a deployment.

Re: Chrome like tab behaviour possible using GWT?

2009-09-14 Thread Isaac Truett

That really isn't behavior so much as appearance, is it? You just need
a few images for the overlapping edges. Without having tried it
myself, I'm anticipating that you'll need a little bit of logic to
apply special style names to handle cases where the selected tab is
the first or last, but otherwise it should be doable with CSS.

Re: Seriously getting beyond my capabilities with GWT....

2009-09-11 Thread Isaac Truett

John,

I think you'll get the best results and fastest replies if you post
more details. Specifically:

1. The exact text of the error message you received, including any
Java stacktrace.
2. The portion of your code referenced in the stacktrace. Start with
the class closest to the top of the trace and include the entire block
surrounding the referenced line - probably not more than a dozen or so
lines of code if you're writing small, cohesive methods. If we need to
see more code to diagnose the problem, we'll ask for it.

I'd be happy to look into your situation if you post back to this
thread with that information.

You have to disable the App Engine portion of the Eclipse plugin
because you aren't using App Engine. You *can* run GWT applications on
App Engine, but in your specific case you have chosen (perhaps
unconsciously) not to do so.

You need to deploy your compiled application to an app server. See

Re: GWT plugin: Problem when project name is changed

2009-09-05 Thread Isaac Truett

I've never named my host page after my project. I name it "index.html"
since that's what every web/application server I've ever worked with
will look for by default. The name doesn't matter to me, it's just a
convenience.

But having project rename change files in the project would be a
substantial annoyance to me. I frequently create multiple copies of a
project in my workspace and, of course, name them differently. They're
all copies of the same code repository - maybe one for trunk, one for
a different branch I'm working in, and one for applying patches from
other developers for review. The point is, I don't want
mypoject-trunk, myproject-branch-1.2, and myproject-code-review to
each have a differently named HTML file.

So, I maintain that keeping the name of the project and the name of
the host page in sync would not be helpful. Keeping the name of the
host page and the launch configurations in sync might be, but that's
not the same thing.

Since ListStore is from a third-party library and not a core class,
you might have better luck asking on that library's forum. Off the
cuff, I'd guess that ListStore is not serializable. But, again, you
should find people with more specific knowledge of your situation on

Re: GWT plugin: Problem when project name is changed

I would tend to say no, although I reserve the right to be persuaded
otherwise by a compelling argument. I can't think of any precedent for
an Eclipse plugin altering a launch configuration's arguments field in
that manner.

Not true. GWT does not require a Java backend and a Java backend does
not require Spring, Hibernate, or anything of the sort.

GWT does not replace PHP on the server or CSS on the client. GWT
replaces most or all of your handwritten JS and AJAX. There's plenty
of information in the forum history about integrating PHP and GWT.

Re: MySQL Connection

2009-09-02 Thread Isaac Truett

Stephan,

You need to make a request to the server for the data. The server can
connect to the database and return the results to the browser. If your
server is running Java, then GWT RPC is a good method. For non-Java
servers, JSON could work for you.

See:
http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/doc/1.6/DevGuideServerCommunication.html

Hope that helps.

Re: MySQL Connection

2009-09-02 Thread Isaac Truett
Hi,

The problem is that you're trying to mix GWT and java.sql. That's not
going to work. JS in the browser can't connect to your database.

The cause of your specific error is that Class.forName() is not a part
of the JRE that GWT emulates.

Re: blank page and other weirdness after upgrade, 1.5 to 1.7

2009-08-31 Thread Isaac Truett

No worries.

I looked up your message directly in Groups, and I see that you
identified your problem as being a div with an ID that's the same as
your module name. I don't believe this is a documented gotcha, but I
do recall seeing another instance of it on the forum recently. What I
don't recall seeing is an explanation of why this should be a problem.
My guess is that something in the bootstrapping wants to use the
module name as an ID and having another element in the HTML with that
ID causes the conflict. But again, that's only a guess.
