Our local JoAnn's fabrics has it in packaged sheets, presumably for
quilters. I think I've also seen it where they sell computer paper, but that
might have been iron-on fabric.

My dad did a production of this many years ago. I probably won't be able to
explain it well. The heads and hooves were made from metal "rod". They looked
like cages - all the rods running vertically - no squares. The hoof parts fit
the foot like a pair of skates and were at least a foot tall and were heavy
enough that they could "stomp" them. The actors wore all black. If I
remember correctly the eyes glowed - otherwise the metal was all black.

Re: [h-cost] Image piracy - Anyone know who this is?

2009-02-28 Thread Chiara Francesca
I ran into this a while back with an eBay seller. I complained to eBay and sent
full documentation of what the offender was doing and my site.

They took the offender down within a week. I have yet to see them back on as a
seller on eBay ever since.

Do screen shots of everything, now. This is a Power seller, it may take a lot
to get them to be sanctioned.

That being said however, I can tell you that eBay has changed somewhat from the
day that I did that. Things are different there now so it may not be as easy to
get someone to listen to you. Still, try.

Etsy is another place where it is FULL of this type of offender. But unlike
eBay Etsy will refuse to do anything about it.

I might go for something like PVC pipe painted to look like metal for the
heads. A lot lighter and easier to cut and put together than real metal. But
the
hooves must be sturdy. Go check out how skates or skis are kept on one's
feet and then the hooves themselves can be built up in layers from all sorts of

material. What do they make soles out of these days anyway? (wood is heavy
and breaks). Check your local flooring dept. Hell check all round Lowe's! Ask
everyone in construction. You never know where the right stuff will pop up.

Of course you don't have to do the original costumes. You could start from

clever way to do it.

PVC sounds interesting and the larger pipe can be cut with a slight angle
then somehow attach to an old skate last -- the brain wheels are turning --
hope they go somewhere and don't stuck in a rut ...

If you weld, you can do the metal cages things suggested by AlbertCat,
otherwise, stack wood and glue. Sandwich straps/leather/ties between the top
2 layers for fastening to the foot. If you want more noise when stomping,
add metal washers, flat metal pieces or even real horseshoes to the bottom.

Re: [h-cost] OT-Equus heads and hooves

2009-02-28 Thread stilskin
Traditionally in the show, the horses are people carrying/wearing wire or cane
or other cage-like pieces to give the impression of horses rather than create
anatomically correct horses or, ghod forbid, panto horses! I have also seen it
done with papier mache heads and conical cups around the ankles.

I did make some hooves for a costume (Satan) about ten years back. They were
carved from light timber (pine) in four sections then glued and screwed before
painting. The inside shape was similar to a high-heel shoe so that the foot sat
with the heel higher with the foot at a diagonal, not the most comfortable
solution but the most appropriate for scale -- remember you hoof must sit well
visually against the ankle. These hooves were then strapped around and up the
ankle. I wanted the clip-clop sound so avoided some sensible rubber on the
bottom but did place some grooves there to give a little traction.

The main thing is to closely look at a horse hoof to see how they look, get the
profile right, and remember the underside which has a lot of shape and texture.
You can hide the ankle strapping under some hair -- think Clydesdale but not so
thick,
