[h-cost] loot query...
Anybody know? Did Medieval Clothing and Textiles #6 have an edition that came without a dust jacket, or do we need to yell at the vendor? Our Christmas copy unexpectedly has a very nicely printed hard cover, but no dust jacket, and 1-5, as we have them, all have DJs. thanks! chimene ps, my other big costume thing is Stella Mary Newton's Health, Art Reason!!! Well, the aforementioned Med Clothing Textiles #6. Stella Mary Newton's Health, Art Reason! (to feed my Reform Dress jones!) And there's SUPPOSED to be a frock coat pattern on the way. That one serves me right for dithering so long, but both of us had multiple items not arrive in time for today. Thank you all very much, all the folks who responded to eek, quick opinion please!!! Numerous other books and LOTS of chocolates, 8-)! dk choc hazelnuts from here in Oregon; Meiji chocolate almonds (); dk choc almonds from I-don't-know-where, buy them at Capella bulk section; Chocolove cherry-and-dk and raspberry-and-dk bars (which I haven't tried before, though their almond-and-sea-salt dark bar is divine!) and the mini-pack of all-dark Ferro-Roche (hazelnut)... chimene On Dec 25, 2010, at 1:19 PM, Lavolta Press wrote: My husband gave me three costume books: How the Watch Was Worn: A Fashion for 500 Years, by Genevieve Cummins Accessories to Modernity: Fashion and the Feminine in 19th-Century France, by Susan Hiner The Cut of His Coat: Men, Dress, and Consumer Culture in Britain 1860-1914, by Brent Shannon A fancy walnut hand mirror Also some non-costume books and some chocolate truffles. It is new this year, correct? Only costumey thing I got is a very nice bangle bracelet--I'm not much of a bracelet person, but my DH gave it to me, so I think I'll change my ways. Re: [h-cost] What costume-related holiday gifts did you get?
My family and Santa provided me with a few books under the tree today. Cool Couture by Kenneth D. King, so I can improve my sewing skills. I need to improve my piping if I'm going to attempt Victorian clothing, and I've never done a welt pocket and his instructions look good and doable. I also like his decorated tassle, which I've wanted to do for the end of a Tudor girdle. Pattern Fitting with Confidence by Nancy Zieman. I can drape bodices decently now, but my skills on paper pattern adjustments for modern retro clothes are basic. I learned her shift pivot pattern adjusting method from a small article from an old Threads book of collected articles. But this book expands that basic info on fitting, including fitting for us plus sized folks. It was the pants adjustments that sold me, although I will find out how well it works in practice soon enough. I've also got Fitting for Real People for other fitting help, it's just the cut slash method they use that confuses me. And the beautiful Santa gift was the Italian renaissance paintings book Sunny recommended, with my heartfelt thanks. Virtue Beauty from the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Oh my what great images, many of which I've not seen before (and also didn't know to look). Many are in black and white, but the ones in color are large, and a few are closeup details, which just made this a wonderful book to look through. I can't wait to read and learn from it. Thanks again Sunny for the suggestion. I've also received a few amazon gift cards, so I'm trying to figure out what to get next. But most likely they will be embroidery illumination books, unless I pre-order one of the costume books coming. I hope everyone had a great Christmas, if you celebrate it, or at least a great holiday season. I only got some small notions in my stocking, but I got the only book I truly wanted this year: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Sewn Product Manufacturing by Kathleen Fasanella. It's not really for historical costuming but will be helpful since I'm starting a costuming business. On the other hand, my costume design sketches were a great success as gifts for the family - now to actually get them made! I got two! copies of High Style: Masterworks from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Arta little lack of communication between family members. However, one of them was purchased 'at' the museum by a BIL who lives in NYC. So, he's returning it and getting me the OTHER Met book on my list, 100 Dresses. Sort of costuming related - a new bathroom scale and a Wii system (getting Wii-fit soon), so I can start doing something about fitting back in to some of my older, worn-once-and-no-longer-fits costumesplus a bunch of fiction books and a little kitchen stuff. Pierre got drawing supplies and a new tarot deck (which we use for costume inspiration, not for divination), plus books, DVD's, and CD's.
