I, too, though, am leery of ordering anything from a website that gives no
indication of where they are. I think on-line retailers should take heed. Of
course, mail order rules don't apply to on-line commerce, only to orders one
snail mails. Not that on-line only retailers are deliberately trying to dodge,

And someone commented on non-feather wings--well, Miss USA has them with a

Most of the really outrageous feathers like peacock, ostrich and pheasant
(see Miss Trinidad Tobago) are SHED and recovered, then washed/dyed and
sold to the trade. The birds live and produce another crop every year.

Many of the other feathers that are white or dyed are a by-product of the
meat produced (turkey, mostly), but some pheasant, goose and chicken as
well. The birds aren't killed for their feathers.

My question is, what should I do, in future, to finish the ends of the
braid so that they do not unravel? This first construction used Elmer's
glue (it was what was to hand) and that is obviously the wrong answer if
one ever plans on washing the garment.

Many thanks,

Jen,

If I can't bury the end in a seam, or cover it with something, I've used
Fabri-tac and another craft glue (I think it was the pink label 'Aileen's'
glue) to seal the ends. I went for labels on glues in the t-shirt section of
the hobby store that said they were washable :). So far they seem to be
holding up. Hope that helps.

Re: [h-cost] a question about passementerie

2011-09-13 Thread Audrey Bergeron-Morin

My question is, what should I do, in future, to finish the ends of the
braid so that they do not unravel? This first construction used Elmer's glue
(it was what was to hand) and that is obviously the wrong answer if one ever
 plans on washing the garment.

Ideally, find a way to bury them in a seam. What I often do is unweave the
end and hide it under other parts of the garment, or poke a small hole in
the fabric with an awl and bring it to the wrong end; of course that doesn't
work for wide things you can't unweave. I've also used glue, but use
something that's not water soluble (Elmer's glue is, that's your problem).
Leather crafts glue has worked for me, though it tends to be stiff.

I was hoping that was the case--that most are shed naturally, or, as you say,
by-products of the poultry industry.

But that doesn't mean the costumes aren't excessive!

A non-list friend of mine said
enough with the Carnivale look and
all the birds that gave their lives
for those costumes.

Most of the really outrageous feathers like peacock, ostrich and pheasant
see Miss Trinidad Tobago) are SHED and recovered, then washed/dyed and
old to the trade. The birds live and produce another crop every year.
Many of the other feathers that are white or dyed are a by-product of the
eat produced (turkey, mostly), but some pheasant, goose and chicken as
ell. The birds aren't killed for their feathers.

Re: [h-cost] Carnivale' Costumes WAS Miss Universe 2011

2011-09-13 Thread penny1a
If anyone has watched HBO's series Treme season 2, it showed how they make
the New Orleans' (NO) Mardi Gras Indians make the Carnivale' feathered
costumes. It was a theme weaved through this season. One episode a
reporter was interviewing the Chief about the construction of his regalia
then they went to a museum of this type of costumes in NO. I wish I knew
where the museum is located. It was the museum next to St. Louis Cathedral.
Another thing for me to do in my Mardi Gras research.

A lot of work goes into the construction of these types of costumes. They
work on them year round. The NO costumes have a lot of hand beading. Last
Mardi Gras I photographed the Zulu Parade in New Orleans. The majority of
the court has these elaborate carnivale' feathered costumes. They are
amazing. The women wear an evening gown with their feathers and the men
wear suits and feathers.

The Central South American countries that celebrate carnivale' are very
proud of their costumes. These costumes have become known as their national
costumes. Carnivale' is a huge tourist season for these countries and
brings in a lot of money. Being on an international stage like Miss Universe
is a perfect opportunity for them to advertise Carnivale' as their national
costumes. Going to Rio Venice for Carnivale' are on my bucket list.

BTW, an update on my Mobile Mardi Gras costume research...last month when I
traveled to Florida for my shoulder surgery, we stopped in Mobile (Alabama)
Local History Library and pulled more descriptions of the MG court robes. I
pulled descriptions for 1950s 1980s robes. When my shoulder gets better,
I will type them and add to my website,
http://www.costumegallery.com/MardiGras/2010/Mobile/Museum/

The library's printer was down so we had to scan the articles. We just so
happened to have brought our scanner with us. One article from the 1950s
really caught my eye...during the 1930s the Mobile Jews created three
societies to celebrate their own version of Mardi Gras that occurred one
week after Mardi Gras. My husband was getting impatient scanning, so we
didn't scan the article. On our way back home, we stopped by to scan the
article...I couldn't find it. Something more to research. BUT I was talking
with the Librarian, a group of five people joined in the conversation. They
have been researching the history of Mardi Gras for 10 years, back to the
French origin in the U.S. They offered to me to me many more places to
research and they are going to obtain access for me. The group is not
researching the costumes, but they know all the local robe designers and are
willing to introduce me to them. YIPPEE! The next step in my research!

I think I will be researching this till I die...every Coastal city/town
celebrates Mardi Gras differently. I am already going there four times a
year to research and photograph. LOL! I need a great sponsor!

I was wondering why Miss Botswana is wearing a Maori Pupu? I believe
genetically Maori are closer to Vietnam and Thailand than Africa - perhaps it
is a tribute to Rugby (World Cup competition is currently in NZ).
Miss Ireland looks like she was wearing recycled DVD's. This could be poking
fun at the economic state in Ireland at present, and the fact that the same old
styles get trotted out again and again - like a bad film. How many bird wings
and carnival skirts? At least she was original, pity it wasn't flattering.
I think they should re-name the section Wearable Art with a passing referrence
to your homeland

I liked Greece, too, and agree that Miss Egypt looked like Liz Taylor as
