[h-cost] Pattern drafting history, Kidwell, Seligman

2012-01-26 Thread mhprobe...@gmail.com
Does anyone know of researchers who are currently studying the history of
pattern making? The only scholarly books I have on the subject are
Kidwell's (1979) and Seligman's (1996), nothing more recent, and I don't
know if anyone is doing similar research any more.
thanks!

I don't know if this counts, but a number of years ago, a fellow from (I
think) a Missouri Opera company 'revived' a system used in the 19th
century. The guy called it the Sartor system. I think he self published
it. It isn't really a historical study, but it might be of interest.

I think I have my 'facts' right - I am sure someone else will correct me if
I am wrong. He also wrote the Annotated Arnold
Trump, R. W. *The Annotated Arnold: A commentary on *Patterns of Fashion
1560-1620* by Janet Arnold*. Self-published.

[h-cost] 1958 prom dress

2012-01-26 Thread Lynn Roth
Could anyone tell me what tyoe of decoration would be on a 1958 prom gown?  I
usually don't do this costume era and i'm not sure what would be acceptable.
Also, would the under slip ever show on the bottom?  One of the women wearing
the dress would like the bottom(I believe its netting) to show.  Thank you Lynn

2012-01-26 Thread Lavolta Press
If it comes to that, I revived four different 19th- and early
20th-century apportioning scale systems in my books Fashions of the
Gilded Age (Heinrich Klemm's system), Bustle Fashions 1885-1887 and
Directoire Revival Systems 1888-1889 (the first version of William
Goldsberry's system), The Voice of Fashion (the second version of
William Goldsberry's system), and The Edwardian Modiste (Jonathan
Nelson's system). I also did research into early 19th-century pattern
drafting for The Lady's Stratagem and described some techniques there.

But, although I enjoy doing the research and have done more than I have
published, there is not a lot of commercial value in it. Publishing
patterns yes; the research per se, no.

I have it somewhere. As I recall, it is exactly what the title says:
Information on where to find materials held in institutions on which to
do your own research. I just use eBay, etc.

mmaybe peaked out of the scallops and maybe but not always blue Tue rushing
somewhere else like in a cassette ay the waist or shoulder. My cousins was like

Strapless? Small spegetti cord, or self shoulder straps, gathered to about
2/3...'usually snapped on for ease of removal..for an option. Self fabric
trim using bows, roses Other fabric flowers...one Elizabeth Taylor gown
appliqued the whole bodice with daiseys (I think) Sprinkles of sequins , tiers
of ruffles (tulle) or organza.. The tulle ruffle at th bottom would have been
attached to the hem of the dress.Dipping prtticosts (in my crowd) would have
been in poor taste (too long, rolled up and slipping.) Appliques of rattail in
geometric shapes. American in Paris, Daddy Longlegs are two films that might
give you some ideas.

My 1958 prom dress was very simple. White floor length, netting over satin
full skirt with a strapless top of satin with the netting in tiny vertical
folds covering it.

I hadn't thought of it in years.

2012-01-26 Thread Marjorie Wilser
I remember 1958 blue as being almost a powder blue with lavender
highlights when seen at an angle. Quite a lovely subtle color. And the
fabric turned bright pink when ironed, and cooled to its original blue.
