Re: [h-cost] What do you do?
I just stop for several months, and look around, go visit my family (just got back from a three month trip driving from long island, NY to Dallas, TX, and back again. put on over 7,000 miles on my truck. i stopped all along the way to visit any family that i know about, even one third cousin and several great aunts and uncles). I had not been very interested in sewing or much of anything for several months, but now that i'm back i am itching to get back to it... I am spending today unbarring my sewing area from what i piled up as i was leaving and what my husband littered the room with, and hoping i can get in one small project before the i should cook dinner. -- Bjarne og Leif Drews wrote: What do you do when you finally realise you dont want to reenact anymore, and when your costumes gets bored to look at? Re: [h-cost] Flemish Workingwomen -Black Partlets -a question
Thanks a good point Dawn. And I am making the partlet out of this outragusly great and wonderful black wool that my mom got for some suits. I made the stuff for her, and just *happened* to have some left over. when i got the fabric i had to roll around in it, it was so wonderful. Actually, I really sweated the placement of pieces because the fabic was like $30 a yard-worth every penny, but not something I would normally buy. J Schueller Says: However, I am wondering if i should make the partlet out of one layer, and just make the inside seams as pretty as I can, or should I make them out of two layers and make the seems go inside? anyway have any insight? Dawn Says: I made one of a pants weight black wool and just hemmed the edges. It is quite warm and toasty as just a single layer. I was sweating in it indoors, but comfortable on a sunny February afternoon outside. It's my belief that the black ones were outdoor or winter wear, and the white ones for indoors or better weather, and the sheer ones for 'best' wear. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
[h-cost] Flemish Workingwomen -Black Partlets -a question
I am going to be making tomorrow (wed, nov23) one of the black partlets shown in some of AERTSEN's work. Some examples of a painting with some of these partlets is http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/a/aertsen/ (in the ninth, tenth and eleventh paintings down). These partlets seem to be basically exactly the same pattern as the white linen ones worn beneath, so I have a pattern. However, I am wondering if i should make the partlet out of one layer, and just make the inside seams as pretty as I can, or should I make them out of two layers and make the seems go inside? anyway have any insight? I make my white linen ones from two layers, though I am thinking of making one with only one layer-it seems like it will be more see though with only one layer, and some of the paintings make it seem like they should be see though sometimes. Thanks to anyone who shares their opinion, I value both theoretical and practical outlooks. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

On the topic of the south and hoop skirts Were the hoop skirts popular later in the south then the north? I mean, our (ok, mine and I am a typical yankee) picture of "THE SOUTH" is alweays with ladies in hoops, but I would assume that the north had just as many ladies wearing hoops at the same time. jordana ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

For example, you could overydye the bright green with a blue to create a lovely dark green. Or add blue dye to a pink wool to create a lovely lavender or purple. Good point, I might buy enough for another flemish working women's outfit. I had forgoten about it, but aI do think that gabardine is thin enough to be useable. also, this is a bit of a boast, and I will not be able to give the name of the store (i am going to go back on sat, and i just know where it is) but I found a bunch of 60 inch wide linen in fairly light weights for 3.50 (plus 8 5/8th % sales tax). I think I am going to buy a variity about $400 Is it 100% linen? Sometimes the big chain stores call things "linen" or "linen look" when they might only contain part linen or--no linen at all. Just be sure of what you are buying when you pay that price. You might be able to ask for a burn test there or get a sample and burn it outside yourself. I would just hate for you to buy "linen" and find out that it really is linen/rayon or poly/rayon It is one of the smal hole in the wall new york city fabric stores on like 38th or 39th or 40th between 7th and 8th, and burn test is already done. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
[h-cost] Storing Outfits
I have a question about storage. I do not store my historic clothing on hangers mostly, I fold or roll up and put into cloth bags that i make for each outfit (the bag has a listing of each part of the outfit and what needs to brought along that is not in the bag), then I put the bags into plastic tots. However, sometimes they get a little funny smelling, and I would like to make sure that bugs do not get into them. Does anyone have any advise about storing outfits? A couple of years ago, I made little bags of lavender and such and put those in, which smell nice, but I am not sure if they do anything to keep bugs away Jordana p.s. Some dresses I fold over at the waist and hang from pants clasp hangers --> mostly before I hem the dress I like to leave it like that for a couple of weeks to get any stretch out not sure if it makes a difference, just have never had any problems doing that, so i figure that i might as well keep doing it. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Re: Fabrics from eBay, was Re: [h-cost] linen blends
My problem with fabrics-store is that thier white light weight linen (IL-19 and IL-20 i think are they names) does not come in what they called "soften" so it is fairly rough-i.e. not something i would want to use in a chemises. I have used it so, and it is ok, but NOT as nice as some of the good linen I have bought for 7 dollars other places. I have tried washing and drying it again and again, and alos tried washing it with dish soap (someone said that might help at some point). I have noticed that Joanne's sometimes appears to mix things up, but the local one is pretty limited that way...a huge selection of craft supplies, quilting, and home decor fabrics (that part isn't so bad actually). The actual garment fabric section takes up less than 1/4 of the fabric department and is heavily into fleeces and specialty (bridal/prom, baby, holiday) fabrics. Completely natural fabrics are hard to come by. :- ( In that same vein...I have seen several eBay sellers that have linen. Anyone want to share any experiences with buying fabrics from eBay? Annette M - Today's lesson is about fabric. For linen, I go to www.fabrics-store.com. I have had good service and decent products at a good price. You can get free samples of up to 5 fabrics at a time. Can't hurt to give it a try. I've had good luck with cotton-linen blends (and it's amazing what a little color-remover and dye will do if the original color is just wrong); most of the ones I have used are 50-50. I won't use any of the linen-rayon blends for next-to-the-skin clothing, but they should be fine for outer garments. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
[h-cost] Costum Movies
Hello all, yesterday i got a movie out from the Library and was wondering on you all's reaction /memory of it. I was not particularly impressed, but then, i was watching WHILE sewing so, i was not paying as much attention to the movie as i could have. The movie was LUTHER ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0309820/ ) The movie was not in itself very impressive. i thought the acting was ok, but there was no attempt to go in depth so it just seemed like people walking on stage, then walking off stage, and i did not get much of a feeling of a story from the movie. The costumes were also not too impressive. most looked right, but it just did not click ion my brain and give me the feeling of clothes for many of the people. Like Emperor Charles V's costume was gorgeous, but it looked like he was wearing a costume, not clothes. Fitting t-tunics was:Re: [h-cost] Re: Future ware(gloves)
One website that i would love to do (when i have the fitting ability) is do a web site with various people and show the first fit of a t-tunic, and then how it looks as one changes each measurement to get a great fitting tunic. can you tell that i am a math teacher (methodical, methodical, and methodical) \Sue Clemenger wrote: It's more of an issue with me, as well, but in my case, it's more of a bust issue than tummy, which I take care of with gores. When I wrote that this morning, what I was picturing was not only all the folk I know in the SCA who wear "I don't give a [EMAIL PROTECTED] if it's old and grody, you can't make me wear anything else" tee tunics, but also all the larger people who seem to have bought into the tunic-or-houpe-as-medieval-equivalent-to-a-muumuu, when I know, from personal experience, that fit is just as important for those of us at the larger end of the bodily bell curve as it is for those who are otherwise blessed, if not more so! I'd like to add that I know a variety of SCA people, mostly guys, who wear nicely fitting tunics or cotes, and their heights and weights vary significantly, but they all still look good. It's the fit, and the right materials (natural fibers so ROCK!). --sue J Schueller wrote: (Nothing against tee tunics, mind you, or any of the style-cousins, but many of the ones I've seen are old, sloppy, and badly-fitting. I was talking to some guys at work (older) and they siad that they had never bought cloths for themselfs, their wifes had always boght their clothes. So, how much of what guys wore over the centries has been what they wanted to wear, and how much of it was chosen by thier womanfolks?
