Hello,

I see one main benefit of this: To know, once and for all, how much
money one can *really* make out of web advertising. My personal hunch: nil.

It's pay-per-click, and last time I remember, which was in the dot-com
era, it was $0.13 / click at its best, $0.05 nominal.

But I would love to be proven wrong.

I saw some sites that used the following scheme to get some revenues:

1) Everyone entering the site will have banners here and there, perhaps a
few nasty pop-ups.
2) People that don't want ads or popups have the ability to pay a small fee
per year. This is something that can be included in the member of Hamakor,
for example.

I not a big fan of ads and/or popups, but I do think that for such sites and
can work.

I wonder if we can get those think-geek ads as well, like the ones in
Slashdot... ;-)

I vote firmly against this. Popups are evil and should not be used on any
respectful site. The reason I suggested Google's text ads is that they seem
unobtrusive enough to be used on our sites and still generate revenue.

Popups are just one of the things we can use. Unintrusive ads usualy don't
get much attention most of the time, so it will mostly take up space rather
than generate revenue.

Another good way of generating revenues is getting some sponsers. This can
be done in exchange for some of the vast knowledge people have here
regarding Linux and computers in general.

Sponsers like IBM, Sun, other software companies that are related to UN*X
and Linux in Israel and so on. Put a banner to their site and perhaps get
some hardware, bandwidth, web space or whatever from them.

These sponsers will be more than just one timers that pops up whenever there
is a gathering of some sort. It will be more like an adoption :-)

I don't really know, but is Actcom helping more than just in Hamakor
gatherings, for example?

Actcom sponsor hosting and connectivity of both iglu.org.il and
hamakor.org.il for no charge. I say they give enough to the community.

Perhaps there is a need for additional sponsers.

I know that I click on ads or banners in REALLY rare cases. I guess you can
appeal to the community and ask them to click one time each day, but that's
not the point for that, is it...

What is the goal for this money that will be collected through these ads
anyway?

It's sepecifically disallowed by Google to do so.

Money can be used for a wide variety of activites under Ha'makor's
charter, such as support for installation parties, advertising, and
activites such as the August Penguin.
