Re: [Hampshire] Spamalot

2013-07-02 Thread Freaky Clown
In case this hasn't been covered before one of the most impressively easy
ways to combat this is to have a hidden form field on the registration
form, this field MUST remain blank for the form to be accepted, most spam
bots will auto fill this in yet humans will not even see it - should knock
out most of the spam.

combine with another form and its pretty fool proof

Re: [Hampshire] [OT] Citrix

2012-07-19 Thread Freaky Clown
as others have said try it you might just like it...

as for "locked down desktop" LOL we at work have yet to see a well
locked down citrix environment, infact it has become a bit of a joke
contest to see who can "break out" of the citrix environment the
fastest, i believe the current record is ~3 seconds and this was done
by someone just slapping both hands down on the keyboard... but on
average "breakouts" normally take 15 seconds or so because of the need
to type something. It is then just a matter of owning the host
environment.

I am sure your IT group will follow all the lock down guidelines and
all will be good in the world ;)

The full membership would be UP to £20 (the price will go down the
more people we have)
FREE open days will also be held
Pay what you can if you are not a regular or which to help out

We shouldnt turn ANYONE away... so if you dont want to pay or cant pay
you can still come along!!

As for what a hackspace will give, I have already answered that
before... don't ask what your hackspace can give you ask what you can
give to a hackspace!

Re: [Hampshire] [Surrey] Aldershot Hackspace?

2012-05-11 Thread Freaky Clown
for those that keep asking abotu what a hackspace can provide them...

"Hackerspaces are physical places where people can meet to learn,
socialise and collaborate on projects. "

there will be space to work on projects electrical/mechanical/other as
well as like minded people around to help and to be helped!

many hackspaces (including our one) allow people to come along FOR
FREE to check them out, available at most places will be kit that
either you do not have or
you wish to share, already we have had donations of things such as
pillar drills... we would hope in time to offer such things as 3d
printers and cnc machines as well as masterclasses
in certain fields.

Yes the lugs could meet at the hackspace although a token donation
might be nice by some non-members.

If you think you can help out by donating kit/time/money the please
let me know off list.

Already we have 4 or 5 solid pledges to join up even at £20/month -
the more people who join the lower the price will become (so ask your
friends)

We shall be looking into setting up a website/mailing list as soon as
we believe the thing will take off.

Re: [Hampshire] [Surrey] Aldershot Hackspace?

2012-05-11 Thread Freaky Clown
Guys and girls,

I am glad there is alot of interest in this - so to some of the
questions raised.

£20/month was an out of the air figure just used and is NOT indicative
of the actual cost
it WILL require some individuals to pay over the odds just to set this
up, but i am sure we can do it!

so memberships will probably be more inline with what was suggested
being much less than £20/give what you can

Yes we know about reading hackspace and yes its only 20 miles from
aldershot BUT its too far for alot of people to get to from the south
west
http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/List_of_Hacker_Spaces check the map here
and you will see a hackspace in aldershot would cover a large area!

I can not see a reason that LUG meetings could not be held there
As for minimum age again I have no idea on that, this was just to
gauge interest in if myself and the other parties should bother
looking into this further

if the price was a more sedate £5 or at most £10 would more people
consider joining?

[Hampshire] Aldershot Hackspace?

2012-05-11 Thread Freaky Clown
Sorry for the cross post but im lazy... (talk to my lawyer if you have
a problem!)

Anyway a few of us folks are looking at a possibility of a Hackspace
based in aldershot - working on the basis that membership would be
about £20/month to start with
how many people would be genuinely up for joining?

[Hampshire] Sorry for the cross post but you need to read this.

I dont normally let out stuff like this, but thought you lot should known.

So far confirmed with:

Gentoo
Fedora
ArchLinux

You can kill a locked screen by pressing ctrl+alt+*

please try this to see if you are vulnerable to this attack and let
the list know your OS if different to the above.

Cheers

Re: [Hampshire] Linux printer recommendations.

2011-12-17 Thread Freaky Clown
I hate all printers - they are the only piece of technology that has
not gotten significantly better in 5 years - however I recently HAD to
buy a printer and was shocked at how easy the Kodak ESP 7250 was to
get workign in linux - it literally was 30 seconds - I was gobsmacked.

Re: [Hampshire] DDoS survival strategies

2011-09-05 Thread Freaky Clown
Forgive me for not reading teh entire post as I currently do not have
the time (i shall no doubt put my foot in my mouth) but I have
digressed enough.

I have to say that due to the nature of my job, the use of website GET
requests to DDoS attack a site is becoming more rare, in the future
even with IPv6, i can see it becoming used even less - the current
field of attacks and a massively greater success is in the field of
DDoSing the webserver in a different manner e.g resource hogging. In
fact I was present only the other day during a conference where such a
new tool was demonstrated to effectively take down a powerful
webserver with a single IP with a 3g dongle, thankfully as yet this
tool remains in teh hands of professionals and not the public domain.
Alot of these new style attacks can not currently be stopped with out
massive amounts of resources, even so I have seen demonstrations
showing that even the "big boys" out there can not stop this type of
resource of attack.

so what does the future hold? well with ipv6 it just means the Chinese
and the PLA will use a beowulf cluster of fridges and toasters (not
the amiga one) and what ever bloody else gets a net presence to drain
the resources of your puny web server.

just my two cents from the other side of the fence :)
