[Hampshire] [Admin] Meetings

2013-07-08 Thread Tim Brocklehurst
Hi guys,

I've been meaning to write this note for weeks, but I've been madly busy.

There are no meetings in July and August. The next meeting will be in
September. I'll let you know the details when I have them.

Cheers,

Tim B.

[Hampshire] [ADMIN] Meetings and such

2012-06-05 Thread Hants LUG Chairman
Hi,

I would like to thank Richard our host at the University on Saturday. I think
we all wish him well with his exams and hope to see he in the new term. Our
next meeting at the University should be as planned in October.

We really do need to sort out the committee elections at the October meeting
and elect a new committee. I will distribute details shortly. If you feel you
can contribute something, then please consider volunteering for a position on
the committee.

[Hampshire] [ADMIN] Meetings

2011-03-19 Thread Hants LUG Chairman
Hi,

I am pleased to announce that thanks to Chris Malton we now have two meetings
booked at the University, Saturday 02 April and 07 May. Chris hopes to be
there with a few other students from ECS so I hope this is the start of a
stable relationship with the University.

Because of building work at the time we won't have Seminar Room 2, so if we
want to do talks we can either use Seminar Room 1 which is set up for A/V or
we can use one of the lecture rooms.

Anton is also investigating going back to IBM, and I hope to have a date for
that for this year too.

Chris said he will also look into the networking, which hasn't worked on our
previous visits.

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped to date, in getting into the
University, and I hope that with a few extra students joining in we can use
the University without having to rely on a single volunteer - which is a bit
unfair on them.

[Hampshire] [ADMIN] Meetings

2010-11-17 Thread Hants LUG Chairman
Hello,

I would first like to thank Red Hat and the Surrey LUG for last Saturday's
meeting, it was very well attended and a visit to Red Hat now and then is
appreciated.

http://surrey.lug.org.uk/content/bring-box-13th-november-2010

I believe it's full up, but Saturday 27 November is a Barcamp in Southampton
and I hope everyone who goes enjoys themselves. With luck there will be more
such events in our area.

http://barcampsoton.eventbrite.com/

On paper our next meeting should be in Southampton on Saturday 4 December. I
will probably not be going, as it's the London Perl Mongers annual Workshop in
on the same day, but I will be trying to arrange a LUG meeting for that day -
if I can get space at the University.

http://conferences.yapceurope.org/lpw2010/

If you can't make our December meeting, Surrey's is on 11 December at Nokia
(it's in Hampshire not Surrey anyway) and Silicon Corridor next meeting is in
Reading on 8 December 2010.

I need to say that I won't stand this year for the committee.

As some of you know I now have new business commitments and therefore
additional responsibilities to prioritise; not too mention some critical
project and coding deadlines the next two quarters.

I have enjoyed the role, although was unable to achieve all I had hoped,
also appreciated Adam's strong presence as Hants Lug chair.

I'll still be knocking around on list and will attend meetings when

[Hampshire] [ADMIN] Meetings

2009-10-15 Thread Hants LUG Chairman
Hi,

Our next meeting will take place at Southampton University on Saturday 7th
November 2009 between 10am and 4:30pm [0]. There will be a short AGM at the
meeting, as indicated by Hugo [1]. I believe that some committee positions are
still open so should you wish for power now is your turn..!

Recently there was an active discussion on the differences in various package
managers, I hope that we can have an active session to show all the
differences [2].

If anyone would like to give a talk then please speak up now [3].

It is possible that I will have more books for reviewing and I may repeat my
reviewing talk and distribute more books for reviewing. I should also say that
the wiki now has quite a few reviews posted and I would like to publicly thank
those that have contributed [4].

After November we plan to share with Surrey in December, return to Southampton
in January and possibly visit Hursley again in February.

2) Thanks for everyone who volunteered to review a book. I've sent a

like us to review when they let me know. The first two reviews are on the
wiki along with the review procedure.

I can't comment on how things started as it was before my time, but at the
moment we have tame contacts in the universities we visit and get the space
and bandwidth for free and we promise not to break things and leave the place
clean and tidy. We also visit places where people work, Nokia have let us in
for nothing in the past as well.

Other places charge money - sometimes a lot, and for that we need to take
donations on the door. In fact we always try and take donations to even out
 the differing costs of venues.

With the money we've collected we have bought our own kit so we can turn up
with plenty of power strips, switches and CAT5, wireless bridging, we also
contribute towards our server and so on.

Any help you could chuck my way would be very helpfull.

I'd say the best thing to do would be for a few of you to come down one of
 our
meetings, from our web site you can see which ones tend to be better attended
and what has gone on in the past.

There is also the Reading SCLUG, they don't tend to have technical meetings
but they are closer if you want social gatherings. If you have any joy with
Newbury let us know when your meetings are, there are quite a few of us in
the north of the county who can probably make Newbury and if there are enough
people interested we could do a joint meeting.

Thats a great start. I can start sending nice letters etc and test the
waters.

Would be great to attend some of your meetings, just to put faces to
names.

I'm not opposed to the idea, but I know a bring a box meeting on a

on a weekday is fine if it's possible to find a location and
enough warm bodies.

Our neighbours to the north only do a monthly social meeting in
Reading at a pub (SCLUG) and the London.pm do more frequently than
monthly social meetings with less frequent technical meetings.
Surrey have done some pub meets as well as their normal Bring and
Box meetings.

Were you thinking of a pub meeting for a few hours after work, and
if so where?

Or were you thinking of a technical meeting - a few presentations
and such?

Given the limited time in an evening some people won't travel,
which is a problem in a rural county like Hampshire. The London.pm
have plenty of social meetings because it's easy on London to nip
to the pub and get home at a sensible time, it's harder to arrange

Any idea what will be covered in the photography talk? One of the
things I haven't yet got to grips with is colour management and
profiles: the art of making what comes out of Jessops match what's on
your screen. I'd be interested in hearing more about that.

I've chased up Tony to remind him... It's still not confirmed it's still
an if all goes well event, however he did say: I can certainly talk
about colour profiles and management though as Chris asks, and will talk
about RAW processing and photo management too.

[Hampshire] [ADMIN] Meetings

2008-12-10 Thread Hants LUG Chairman
Hello,

Just a quick reminder about our next two meetings.

Saturday 13 December at the University of Surrey in Guildford with the Surrey
LUG. Details on their web site:

http://www.surrey.lug.org.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BringABox/UniversityOfSurrey

In the new year, the next meeting will take place on Saturday 10 January at
the University of Southampton. Details on our site:

http://www.hants.lug.org.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?SeminarRoom1

TALKS:

I'm giving a talk at the December meeting (a repeat I'm afraid) and if all
goes well we will have a talk on digital photography in January.

Lots of people have asked or volunteered to give talks and the talks page is
getting a tad muddled so I'm planning to clean it up shortly. Now would be a
really good time to re-volunteer for a talk so we can put you at the top of
the list! Or if you want to learn about something we can try and coerce a
speaker for you.

In case I don't see you before the new year, Seasons Greetings and best
wishes for the New Year.

Any chance of a weekday evening meeting (or daytime for that matter but
I suspect evening would suit more people) from time to time. Saturdays
are really not a good day for me at all.

Alan.
