Rent in London is probably a lot higher than rent in Aldershot though. London Hackspace's expenses are hinted at here: http://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Budget I am not sure that a large industrial unit¹ in Aldershot is going to cost anywhere near £3,750/month. But like London Hackspace, I recommend saying the hackspace needs an average of £x per member to survive. We ask that you pay what you think the space is worth to you, to a minimum of £5/month. That way you get free money from all the people who like the idea but couldn't justify £20/month or whatever. Hi Dominic, On Fri, May 11, 2012 at 04:36:11PM +0100, Dominic Rodriguez wrote: I prefer Andy's idea - Yeah I understand of the costs but even so I think we should be able to pay what we want to a minimum. Just to clarify, that is not my idea, just the way that most established hackspaces I am aware of work.. :) When London Hackspace first proposed offering their full facilities to those paying only £5/month, I was initially quite vocally opposed as Hackspace Foundation Ltd at the time was running at a deficit and would have been bankrupt in ~5 months. I felt they should be only offering the most basic things at £5, and demanding the full £20 at least for everything. However, I was very pleased to be proven totally wrong - the increased buzz about the new space brought in new members and they were very soon able to expand into the neighbouring unit. The £5 minimum proved to be a good move to bring in new members. On the other hand, you have to appreciate that getting something like this off the ground is really hard - LH had been going a few years before they got their existing decent premises. They used to meet in a pub basement, and then got free access to a drafty loft elsewhere. For all that time they weren't taking subscriptions, only donations. At the start they relied on a few members paying well over the average, in order to get things kickstarted. And (a lot like a LUG I suppose) it will always need a few people putting in way more effort than everyone else to keep it going. So at the start it probably is going to need a few very dedicated people willing to subscribe to something that doesn't really yet exist and put in a lot of time, in order to bring it into existence. Re: [Hampshire] [Surrey] Aldershot Hackspace?
Guys and girls, I am glad there is alot of interest in this - so to some of the questions raised. £20/month was an out of the air figure just used and is NOT indicative of the actual cost it WILL require some individuals to pay over the odds just to set this up, but i am sure we can do it! so memberships will probably be more inline with what was suggested being much less than £20/give what you can Yes we know about reading hackspace and yes its only 20 miles from aldershot BUT its too far for alot of people to get to from the south west http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/List_of_Hacker_Spaces check the map here and you will see a hackspace in aldershot would cover a large area! I can not see a reason that LUG meetings could not be held there As for minimum age again I have no idea on that, this was just to gauge interest in if myself and the other parties should bother looking into this further if the price was a more sedate £5 or at most £10 would more people consider joining? -- Freakyclown -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --

Re: [Hampshire] [Surrey] Aldershot Hackspace?
for those that keep asking abotu what a hackspace can provide them... Hackerspaces are physical places where people can meet to learn, socialise and collaborate on projects. there will be space to work on projects electrical/mechanical/other as well as like minded people around to help and to be helped! many hackspaces (including our one) allow people to come along FOR FREE to check them out, available at most places will be kit that either you do not have or you wish to share, already we have had donations of things such as pillar drills... we would hope in time to offer such things as 3d printers and cnc machines as well as masterclasses in certain fields. Yes the lugs could meet at the hackspace although a token donation might be nice by some non-members. If you think you can help out by donating kit/time/money the please let me know off list. Already we have 4 or 5 solid pledges to join up even at £20/month - the more people who join the lower the price will become (so ask your friends) We shall be looking into setting up a website/mailing list as soon as we believe the thing will take off. -- Freakyclown -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --

Re: [Hampshire] [Surrey] Aldershot Hackspace?
Lisi The full membership would be UP to £20 (the price will go down the more people we have) FREE open days will also be held Pay what you can if you are not a regular or which to help out We shouldnt turn ANYONE away... so if you dont want to pay or cant pay you can still come along!! As for what a hackspace will give, I have already answered that before... don't ask what your hackspace can give you ask what you can give to a hackspace!
