Re: [Hardhats-members] Windows Vista!!!!!
VistA-Office - just two caps in a row with one of those really pain in the neck hyphens that I have to look at the keyboard to find. Makes VistA alone much more attractive, but personally I have learned to like that terminal A as there are a bizillion Vistas out there as the names of lots of things, but only on VistA. So I have already embraced VistA, and now Microsoft's move makes me truly enamored with it. RE: [Hardhats-members] Windows Vista!!!!!
It seems like Microsoft and VA have a history of using the same name for different things. Like DHCP. I wonder if VA ever copyrighted the name VistA? If so, think of the publicity that could be generated by a copyright infringement case. For those of you who didn't know it, here's a bit of VistA trivia for you. VistA was re-named from DHCP in a contest held within the VA about 10 years ago. If memory serves me Cameron submitted the winning name. My submittal was VAMIS (VA Medical Information System), along with a slogan, We're famous for VAMIS. Anyway, I still like VAMIS, but I'm afraid I'm an army of one. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Nancy Anthracite Sent: Friday, July 22, 2005 10:00 AM To: hardhats-members@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [Hardhats-members] Windows Vista! Re: [Hardhats-members] Windows Vista!!!!!
I don't know who actually invented DHCP. It was deployed as part of Windows 3.11, and that may have one of the most important factors leading to its wide acceptance. Historically, a number of protocols have been used for zero configuration networking including TFTP (if you include booting diskless workstations), RARP and BOOTP. For a long time, BOOTP was the market leader in the UNIX community, but it is now essentially obsolete. The original RFC (1531) wasn't submitted by Microsoft, but I can't tell you who originally developed the protocol. Certainly, DHCP has a number of technical advantages over BOOTP, and it really isn't surprising that it eventually won out. === Gregory Woodhouse [EMAIL PROTECTED] The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking. -- Albert Einstein On Jul 22, 2005, at 8:45 AM, Sowinski, Richard J. wrote: It seems like Microsoft and VA have a history of using the same name for different things. A lunchtime search of US copyright code, turned this up. As I read it, the gov't cannot originate a copyright for its own work, but if someone wants to transfer to the gov't a copyright they already own, they can, and then the gov't owns it. But now I'm thinking you need to trademark a name, and the gov't probably can't do that either. § 105 · Subject matter of copyright: United States Government works³⁵ Copyright protection under this title is not available for any work of the United States Government, but the United States Government is not precluded from receiving and holding copyrights transferred to it by assignment, bequest, or otherwise. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Joseph Dal Molin Sent: Friday, July 22, 2005 11:38 AM To: hardhats-members@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [Hardhats-members] Windows Vista! ...the federal gov't cannot hold a copyright to the best of my knowledge Joseph David Sommers wrote: I don't think that's possible because VistA (as we know it) doesn't appear in Google until page 2. RE: [Hardhats-members] Windows Vista!!!!!
You know I just thought about an issue for support people both inside and outside of VA. In the future, when you answer the phone, you might say, Is your problem with Vista or VistA? Eventually it may evolve into, Is your problem with Vista or HeV? But, it could be confusing for a period of time. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ELSIE CASUGAY Sent: Friday, July 22, 2005 1:16 PM To: hardhats-members@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: RE: [Hardhats-members] Windows Vista!
