Re: [H] Compaq hidden partition
I'm not talking about the bootstrap loader & settings NVRAM, I am talking about the code to run the configuration interface FOR the BIOS. Choice of boot device happens w/o the software via the hardware BIOS reset jumper, but no further control over settings w/o the hidden partition's program. I know this from having run in to and a for one of the few times in my life being forced to contact TS to understand WTF to do! Stupid idea, yes? Re: [H] adobe reader 8.1
Yeah, pain in the butt.. They don't seem to have the "alternate download page" any more where you could download and save the whole file... You can always download it to install and then save the temp file before you finish the install. :) >>Trying to dl adobe reader 8.1 to send to a customer on dialup but all it want >>to do is install, will not let me dl to keep. >> >>anyone have a link where I can get this ? Re: [H] Fan Noise............
Well, re-installed Vista and XP. Newest nVidia drivers for each OS. Still get the full speed fan in Vista with the nVidia drivers... XP = silent fan Vista = full speed noisy fan Guess I need to wait for nVidia to address the issue. Per the forums I was on it seems there are no fan speed controls in the Vista drivers like there are in XP's. and it seems that the drivers think the Aero interface is a 3D app, which I guess it is basically.. Sigh. ps MS lies, this Core2 Duo machine screams in XP compared to Vista LOL >>Damn it -- JRS<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Please remove **X** to reply... ...Cleverly Disguised As A Responsible Adult...

[H] Fan Noise............
Damn it Installed the latest Vista nVidia driver day before yesterday, and now my GPU fan runs full speed all the time even on the desktop, not just in graphics or games like it's supposed to do. Before the new driver, it ran slowly or not at all when on the desktop, which is good. Called nVidia, they are no help, they escalated to Second level support, but nothing has happened so far. If I boot into Linux or WinPE, the fan stays slow, so it's whatever the damn latest driver put on my PC that did the dirty deed.. Even re-installing the older driver did not work, it's leaving something newer somewhere. System Restore did not work either, again, that can change the registry settings, but not return to an older version of some driver left around some where on the system... nVidia and Guru3D forums said to try Rivatuner, but that does not work with Vista, and nTune did not work either, as neither show a "fan" tab in Vista like they do with XP. Curses. I think I might want to rebuild just because of this, and I wonder if I should go dual boot with XP this time ?? Whaddya think? Dual boot, or just re-install Vista? :) -- JRS<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Please remove **X** to reply... ...Cleverly Disguised As A Responsible Adult...

Re: [H] Compaq hidden partition
I removed the hidden partition on my son's Compaq laptop without any ill effects. I do all partition work with BootIt NG. It doesn't make sense to put BIOS code on the HD because a PC needs to be able to start the boot process from the BIOS even when the HD is defective, or in case you want to boot from a CD or floppy disk. Gary VanderMolen - Original Message - I may be mistaken, but I think the Compaq partition actually has all of the code for the BIOS or some utilities on it. You may not want to get rid of it. No rumor. The new Santa Rosa based MacBook Pros announced yesterday have LED backlighting. Apple claim there is no difference in brightless or viewing angle, but there is a 20% power saving. RE: [H] Glossy LCD screens
Colours are usually brighter with the glossy screens. I tend to find the reflections on glossy screens more bearable. Instead of all or most of the screen being un-readable, it's only the localized area where the main reflection is. Each to their own though :) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Hunter, Gary Sent: 06 June 2007 09:49 To: The Hardware List Subject: [H] Glossy LCD screens Hi, Looking at the ACER LCD's they come in glossy and matt finishes.
