[H] mATX Motherboard recommendation

2009-06-02 Thread Naushad, Zulfiqar
Can anyone provide advice for what would be a good and decent mATX
motherboard to perhaps use a Q6600 with?

I am looking for something with VGA built in, and don't care about 3D
acceleration at all. I would prefer if the components would be
supported out of the box by Linux and/or Windows 7.

GbE would also be a requirement. Other than that price is also a
consideration. I don't want something too expensive.

[H] Vista64 questions work arounds

2009-06-02 Thread Winterlight

XP PRO TweakUi allowed one to edit the context menu = NEW
Is there a way to do this in Vista? I have found the settings in the
registry, and I can selectively remove them but they reappear after a reboot.

One of the issues with Vista Home Premium is that Vista will not
remember network passwords between reboots. The check box is there
but it doesn't work, only Ultimate supports this. Do any of you
Network Gurus know of a work around?

Thanks

If we are talking price concerns and future upgrades, I can see your point
on waiting and concentrating on the upcoming i5 cpu. The fallacy in this
philosophy FOR ME is I rarely upgrade within a socket type. The one time I
did upgrade, I now feel I spent too much to upgrade a socket 939 (at its end
of life) single core AMD64 3700 to an Opteron 185. It gave the system new
life, but cost $235 for an obsolete chip.

I usually build a system and use it for several years and then build a new
system from scratch (at least, mb, cpu, and ram) as much from want as
necessity as the technogies change. So I may spend a little more now for an
X58 mb, i7 920, and DDR3, but the investment will cover me for the next
couple of years till the new next best thing. Only potential pitfall is if
the cpu fails (and I have not ever had a cpu fail) and having to spend an
arm and leg to replace. In the meantime, I have a (for the time being) state
of the art system. The happiness factor has to be worth SOMETHING!

Well I get 2 monitors active with CrossfireX enabled, this under XP. Even when I am
gaming screen#2 still shows it's 2D desktop mode. Certainly seems for 3 or 4 monitors
that crossfireX has to be off, at least with my 4 headed single card vs. two non-X2
cards.

Winterlight wrote:

Are you saying that in non-crossfire mode with 3+ monitors there's an
issue?

no I am saying if you run multiple monitors, I am running a Gateway 3000
on one Asus EAH4970 and two DELL 2407s on another EAH4970, each at it's
native resolution. If I enable Crossfire I loose the DELLs 2D or 3D. I
only see the 30 inch monitor. Asus says this is how crossfire works. So
when you wrote that you were able to use multiple monitors with
crossfire enabled I assumed you were spanning the monitors across one
resolution which can be done with some drivers.

When I enable Crossfire in Vista 64, say to play a game, the desktop
gets messed up when I restore normal mode. So I boot into XP64 with
crossfire enabled if I want to play a gameand I only see the 30 inch
monitor.

That may be different, it was my understanding that my card has 4
heads to do 4 monitors though I think to do so CrossfireX has to be
disabled 1st. Currently I can't get CFX to disable don't have time
tonight to fiddle with it as I am flying out in the morning.
