[H] new motherboard needed
I currently have an asus p5k. I'm going to keep my older cpu, and 2 gigs of ram, and add 2 gigs for now. I'd like to upgrade the cpu later this year, or earlier next year. I'm having problems with the Ethernet port on the p5k flaking out, so I want to replace it. What's the newest/most current chipset? It has to be socket 775, and ddr2. I'd like to spend 150 or less, but if there is something MUCH better for under 200 I'd go that route. I really don't want to spend 300+ on a motherboard. It has to have a lot of sata ports, and an e-sata port. I'd like it to be fanless. Other than that I can't think of much. Thanks! Chris
Re: [H] Core 2 duo and motherboard
I'd like to keep it under 600 for chip/mobo/2 gigs ram for now. I guess I'm more worried about features than I am an absolute top of the line screamer. I didn't think the i35p was available yet? the board can be sli, I just won't use two video cards. I really have no need. I'm not much of a gamer and I have a few consoles if I get the urge to play something. Only game I'd even consider playing is Diablo 3 if it ever comes out. How much are you willing to spend? A QX6800 + GA-35P-DQ6 on intel's new i35p chipset flat out rocks. Though not sli of course On the other end, you can get good value with: Gigabyte 965p-ds3 + e6600 Asus P5B-E + q6600 Just thinking of options that are not sli. But if sli is at all an option, the there are plenty of great 680i boards and 650 boards.
[H] Core 2 duo and motherboard
What's the best combo at this point? I'd love to wait until July/August when the new boards come out, but I need to buy this weekend. What's the best combo right now? I need lots of sata ports, no pata needed...and I'd love an external e-sata port or two. I don't really do gaming so SLI isn't a necessity. I'm looking for a good price, good features, and great stability. I want to run 2-3 gigs of ram and no overclocking. Thanks!

[H] Shuttle XPC SN41G2
I have an old shuttle XPC SN41G2, and an Athlon XP 2500+ Barton. I'm looking to upgrade the CPU to the fastest Socket A I can find. I haven't used socket A in years. I see newegg has some Durons and Semprons. It's been so long since I've touched this. What's my best bet in terms of a CPU upgrade? This isn't my main PC...i'm looking to make this into a HTPC for use in a second bedroom. Any other recommendations are welcome, but I'd like to keep the shuttle so I don't have to lay out any more money. Thanks! Chris
[H] HP NC6000 laptops?
Anyone on the list familiar with these? Work is getting rid of them and I took a few. They are 2-3 years old but are still decent. Some of the ones I'm getting do not have the built in wireless card. From what I'm reading I have to actually purchase the HP mini-pci wireless card or else it won't work? Also, has anyone ever upgraded the ATI Radeon 9600 card in these? Anything better that's fairly cheap? I haven't worked on these as we only have about 40 or so in the field. Thanks, Chris
[H] Windows networking problem
I need some help here. I got asked to take a look at a laptop today at work. It's a Dell Latitude 610 with XP Pro SP/2. It's not a hardware issue as we moved the hard drive to another machine and we had the same problem. The built in wireless works fine. You can login to the domain without a problem and everything is functional. However, when you plug a live drop into the built in network port it doesn't work. It detects that a cable has been plugged in, however, it cannot get an IP address. At first I went to a command prompt and did an IPconfig. Instead of the usual information, it came back with a single line response. I don't remember the response at this moment but it was just a single line. It didn't even have the name of the network card. Since then I have removed/reinstalled the NIC, I unbinded TCP/IP from the NIC, rebooted, then binded TCP/IP tot he NIC. At this point IPconfig now works. It comes back with the proper response. However, still no IP address. I can't repair the connection, and I cannot renew. When I attempt to renew it goes through contacting the server, then a long pause, then it comes up and says no network detection, then it re-detects the network connection and starts the whole process all over again. Every other machine that we attach to this network drop is fine. Put a different hard drive in the same laptop and it works fine. I don't know if TCP/IP stack is somehow corrupted? Any ideas? Thanks, Chris
RE: [H] machine update plans
There was no slam on Harry at all Thane. It's not just simply learning simple tasks. Sure anyone can learn how to type a paragraph in word. However, learning Access in an MIS/CIS program is quite important. Not all corporations run SQL. The company I'm at with now has approximately 1500 employees at our site, and around 6k worldwide. Decent sized company but every department within the organization has these access databases...it's a nightmare. Colleges do teach you how to think. But if you're going to college for IT or Business you need to learn windows and you need to learn office. Most companies don't want to spend the time to teach an entry level business person how to use Excel or Word. I haven't used Open office that much but are the commands and formulas the exact same in open office? Vlookup and everything else is exactly the same? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Thane Sherrington Sent: Friday, August 25, 2006 3:01 PM To: The Hardware List Subject: RE: [H] machine update plans At 03:47 PM 25/08/2006, Christopher Klein wrote: >entering the corporate world or most areas of IT need to learn MS office. >Not open office...but the actual MS office. RE: [H] machine update plans
Harry, I think from your previous discussions you didn't attend college...or maybe you went to a community college? I don't remember now. Anyway, students entering the corporate world or most areas of IT need to learn MS office. Not open office...but the actual MS office. MS office is used by the majority of fortune 500 companies today. Hell...I was consulting at goodyear/dunlop a few weeks ago and their hardware was ancient. They were running windows 95 and novell on some units, however, all machines had office. Granted some were only office 97, but they had office. I don't think I'd consider going to different university because they used open office. In my case I would have avoided the university that did not have/teach office as it would have hurt me in the business/IT world. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Harry McGregor Sent: Friday, August 25, 2006 12:02 PM To: The Hardware List Subject: Re: [H] machine update plans Anthony Q. It's not the choice of document processing software, it's the concepts behind it. If the University is so closed minded that they will only deal with MS formats, you are going to find that they are close minded in other areas both technical and administrative, such as newer programming languages (ie Java only at U of A here), etc. The Architecture program at U of A just mandated at all incoming students have a laptop that is so overkill it's not even funny. They tried to say that it was to protect the investment and make it last the 4-5 year program. The average student in the program would be better off with two laptop purchases over the course of the degree. They speced an Intel Core Duo 2500, 2GB memory, 80GB 7200 RPM drive, ATI x1400 or better, 15" screen or better (though they did not say to go for the high resolution screen, which will suck for the students that cheaped out on that), etc. I wound up specing a MacBook Pro for a client that needed this, as it was available in town quickly. Then I installed XP Pro on it as a dual boot. The students were worried that if they did not have the laptop when they walked in for orientation, that they would get kicked out of the program. The AC voltages feeding the power supply can vary enough to cause your DC output voltages to be out of acceptable range, low and high. Now if some electrical expert will give us the percantage of voltage variance that is acceptable, we will have lots more to work with. My uneducated guess is 10% which would allow the widest acceptable range for a 12 volt output to be from 10.8 to 13.2. That seems too wide. 5% seems more realistic, 11.4 to 12.6. Chuck

Hi Henrik, Thank you very much for the response. I really don't care about the SLI. I'm not that into gaming. I'm mainly just concerned about the dual displays. However, if I'm reading this correctly it sounds pretty cool. Could I use both video cards together, in SLI mode, to output a game on one display? And when not playing games, use both video cards independently for dual display in windows? If so, that would be pretty awesome. Thanks! Did you disconnect the power on the dsl modem? A lot of times they lock onto the MAC address of the computer. Also, you may need to change the MAC address of the router itself to match the computer. Re: [H] stumped
Thanks Ryan...it turns out she was on 2003. I had her turn that option off and it works fine now. Thanks again for the help! Finger...way to chime in after Ryan had already fixed the issue! Hmmm...I don't see that last option, the allow starting in reading layout. Any other ideas? --- Ryan Vorachek <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Yeah that drove me nuts as well. [H] stumped
I have a client who is looking to change this. If you receive a word document as an attachment in Outlook, and double click on it, it opens it word automatically in the book view(pages are side by side). However, if you save the document to the hard drive first then open it...it opens normally. It's not set to this format at all before being saved. Any ideas, options to set, etc. to keep this from happening? It has happened on every machine I've tested it on so far.
