Well my 4yo+ OC'd AMD XP-M gave up the ghost so I need
to replace it. Sucks as i
am just about to dump money into new system pass
this along to the kids when
it croaks.

Anyone have a AXDA3200DKV4E Athlon XP 3200+ or
SDA3300DKV4E Sempron 3300+ CPU
they're looking to unload $90?

Thanks!

Yes, silly me! Picked up a new Sempron 3300+ for $75
which is essentially a XP
3200+ Barton. Unfortunately it ended up being my (2nd)
shit Antec TruePower 480W
toasting caps on the 5V rail which is what Asus A7N8X
uses for vcore causing the
problem.

Problem now is tracking down a reputable (non-antec,
by principle) PSU w/ 5V
rail = 40A which are near non-existent given modern
ATX12V 2.x emphasis on 12V
amps paltry 30A or less 5V rail.I see great used
ones like a OCZ ModStream,
but like a car, you can't be sure the last driver
didn't abuse it. ;)

Thanks to all who made offers!

Bite the bullet? thanks Chris, you writing the check
on that new system for
me? AM2, Are you serious? Personally I'm waiting for
the Asus Rampage to ship
I will build a Q6600 Intel system, screw AMD.

Meanwhile the XP box is more than capable of playing
HL2 at decent frame rates
and has a brand new AGP video card (had to replace
that dead 9800) useless on a
PCI-E system. In other words perfect for the kids to
game on, hell it's been
enough for me.

So no I did not want to spend $75 on a CPU only to
find it was another shit
Antec PSU that is now out of warranty. Certainly did
not want to then have to
spend another $50-60 on the seemingly no longer made
by any quality company ATX
1.3 PSU. To dump an otherwise functional system over
$150 in repairs to keep it
running vs. $1000+ for new makes no sense to me esp.
with two kids and only one
other game pc in the house.

Saving grace, I may be able to resell the XP-M that is
not the problem after
all. I know I could resell the Sempron break even
despite Chris' surprise. ;)

Yes, I'm being serious. Ok, let's say $78 is the max you want to spend, and
you have a new AGP video card you want to use. Fine, you can grab an AM2 with
AGP (they exist, SIS) for about $33. Grab an AM2 Processor for $35, and a
stick of 1G for $10. Bam. You just spent $78. And you ended up with a
LE-1150, yeah, a blah board but you support your video card, and off you go.

Sure, you'd still be cooked to find out it was your power supply, which is a
given, but on the other end, your DDR and other components (like the Asus
board) would sell to make up about 1/2 the distance.

:)

I'm not talking about spending a ton of money.. but an LE-1150, a chip you can
grab OEM for less then $35, would be easily the equal and superior to a Sempron
whatever SocketA, the board wouldn't be, but you'd keep the AGP card so who
cares, and you'd get better SATA, USB, etc. support.

Just saying, if your budget was $78, the combo is out there ;)

I see what your saying but you know me well enough
after all these years the
last thing I'd do is grab some sis board in a casual
fashion. Could be the
greatest thing since sliced bread but it's more than I
want to go through.

Appreciate the thought but this is a EoL patch-up to
give the kids that would
not have cost me this much if I had simply suspected
the PSU to begin with. Shit
it would not have been an issue if the Antec scumbags
had built the PSU right or
at least stood behind their steaming pile of
excrement.

The issue with the twin-die arrangement on the current intel quadcores
is that it's not the northbridge that generates the FSB wall, it's the
blend of both cores and the need for everything to communicate
properly, I've had an E8400 on a 500Mhz FSB (P35 chipset) for a few
weeks now and it's very solid but the QC's seem to cap the FSB to
around 460-470 or so.

It's feasible that no chipset will get around that, sadly :/ although
stranger things have happened.

Oh, the chipset plays a huge role. The communication you speak of is
(largely) regulated the NB in question. An exaggerated (because it has other
problems) example is the 680i chipset. Even P965's are generally capable of
running higher FSBs with QC chips than it can. Alternately, you can look at
the RD600 chipset. It provides special tuning methods of the AGTL+ bus
timings (only Core 2-compatible chipset that can do this as a tunable option
as I understand), which have a -huge- impact on QC overclockability.

I still intend on getting the Q9450 or Q9550 when they're out, but probably
won't be able to push it to the limit until P45.

Yes, two dies will always limit what FSB you can hit, my argument is that
given a chip technically able to hit the high FSB, the chipset plays a very
substantial role. Probably even more important, however, is the motherboard
itself...but given that P45 should give most makers their second stab at a
design based on a chipset with native 1600QDR FSB support, I'm hopeful that
we'll see the best QC OC results yet with it.

Oh absolutely, the chipset does play a huge role, but I fear we're
going to start running into the limits of the signal traces over the
board itself AND timing issues derived from having two drops on the bus.

1999 AMD

Believe it should be an AMD Thunderbird 1.2GHz.
If it will run in your m/b, it's yours... I'll deal with my B-i-L who
seems to

think he is going to get it someday out of family gratis.
Best,
Duncan

Hey Al-

No, it's not what I need but thanks very much for the
offer.

I'm going to be real surprised if none of us have just
one D4KVE series
processor collecting dust somewhere. =)

Anyone have a AXDA3200DKV4E Athlon XP 3200+ or

I have a matched pair of MP 2000+ you can have for
shipping. I know
that's now what you were hoping for

Thanks Duncan but it has to be 3000+ or better, 400Mhz
FSB part. =(

LOL, you BiL is hard-up if he's hoping for charity in
the form of a free 1.2G
T-bird! Hell, I'm only doing replacement here because
the rest of the system
won't carry forward into X48/780i/DDR2/PCI-E land but
is more than usable for
HL2 farcry the kids want to play.

j,
ROTHFLMAO!!! Although I know not why! Yes, the BIL has been living large
on my old bone pile since '03. And, he's already put in his claim on it!!

Good news! The bone pile is now exhausted! LOL!
Except for what he knows not what to do with. :)
Understand. A 1200M TBird will not do it.
Best,
Duncan

Re: [H] Need AMD XP Sempron CPU

2008-02-19 Thread Greg Sevart
I was considering moving to X48 in the coming weeks in anticipation of a
45nm quad-core upgrade (currently running a 65nm quad-core part at 3.2GHz on
P35), but I think I'm going to hold off on the mobo move until P45. P45
sports ICH10R, which supposedly has 10GbE, and likely will do a better job
overclocking the 45nm QC's. It's due out in June.

The real problem is that the new Yorkfield series use a 1333QDR FSB, meaning
that the multipliers are lower than the current Kentsfield. That means I'll
need something likely capable of 475MHz+ FSB 24/7...that isn't P35 or X38,
and likely not X48. P45 I think gives me the best chance at a high FSB to
push to 4GHz. :)

I wouldn't touch 780i with a 20 foot pole.

Greg
