I'll bet a virtual sixpack that your system is infected with something.

Try download SpyBot at www.safer-networking.org - note the definitions update.

In the Features section you can see everything that is loaded by the O/S, and 
delete whatever entry.

Or, you could simply do a Run>RegEdit, and search (F5) for the string "C:\Documents", 
alternatively "Documents", and then delete the relevant key.

Your second problem sounds like you've installed the system as "ACPI Enabled 
Computer" (or something like that).

If this is the case, you should take a closer look at your BIOS settings in the 
"Power Management" department. If you disable Power Management, your problem 
will most
likely be resolved.

To my personal experience, it's always a good idea to reset the MB BIOS to 
Setup Defaults, before installing the O/S.

Tried the 'view' option before and then just tried again (enable, 
reboot, disable, reboot) and it doesn't work for this situation.


I've given up on the monitor thing.  I had thought I'd had it fixed, but 
what happens, happens sometime after XP is fully booted.  If I turn on 
the monitor anytime before full boot, the video is on.  If I wait a good 
long time, then there is no video.  All options in Power Management are 
set to Never.

The drivers have not been updated for a while (GTX280) and, yes, this is 
the first time I'm using the Digital Interface on a monitor, for a 
period of time.  Last Time was a Samsung where the DVI interface dies 
after 2 or 3 days..

Is your monitor DVI, by chance? I've seen a number of times when this
happens using DVI displays (and who isn't DVI at this point...). Since DVI
is just a digital bus, the system/display driver has to "detect" the digital
device in order to use it. If this detection isn't working properly, the
issue you describe can occur. Usually, updating your video drivers is
sufficient to resolve that issue. I would suggest a full
uninstall/reinstall, rather than over-the-top installation.

may not help but I have a 19" that will not wake up IF I turn the monitor off, 
as long as I let the power management handle things it wakes up fine. Usually 
turning the monitor OFF then ON would bring it to life

I use a combination of Flashgot and FDM for that.  Hitting F3 brings up
Flashgot with all the pieces of content on the page.  I can then filter and
choose which ones to download.  Flashgot then passes them to FDM for the
actual downloading.

Can also use the right-click context menu to send inidivudal links to
Flashgot

Of course, the only final recourse is to do a fresh install and see if that
solves the problem, then see what app can cause the problem.  I have a hunch
that Internet Download Manager (which I think works great for
downloading)has a problem.  I do have one more problem with explorer, or
rather the recycle bin, where every once in a while I get a fatal exception
trying to empty it.  Of course it takes all the explorer windows with it,
but I noticed that the tray icon for IDM disappears also.  And I can almost
swear that I did not have these problems before IDM.  Whatever.

Of course, the only final recourse is to do a fresh install and see if 
that solves the problem, then see what app can cause the problem.  I 
have a hunch that Internet Download Manager (which I think works great 
for downloading)has a problem.  I do have one more problem with 
explorer, or rather the recycle bin, where every once in a while I get a 
fatal exception trying to empty it.  Of course it takes all the explorer 
windows with it, but I noticed that the tray icon for IDM disappears 
also.  And I can almost swear that I did not have these problems before

This worked, eventually.  I had to set passwords in two different places 
before it would work.  I had to go to User Accounts and create password 
(even though one already existed), then control userpasswords2 & 
unchecking the box got me an autologon.  It must have been that XP 
either forgot the password(?) or, I mis-remember and although I had to 
click the user on .net, it really didn't have a password.  Surprisingly 
enough, when you do control userpasswords2 and uncheck the box, it asks 
you for a password, but upon rebooting, it doesn't work.  Only worked 
after creating password.

I don't patch. Then again, I don't put systems straight to the Net.
Patches sometimes introduce quirky behaviors. SP are typically safe.

I will risk stepping into this pool! If I read your email correctly, you 
may have a dot-net grumble, and, a power/ACPI/ glitch.


I am still learning the dot-net business. No help here.

I do accept ACPI; only because XP gets really grumpy without it..., 
like, unless a new-build will NOT finish a build, come live, and, ask 
for UName/PW. Period.

At this point, for me, the vertical noise is very big.

I mostly try to disable all POWER MANAGEMENT choices in bios. I manually 
turn my PCs on. I manually turn my PCs off (when necessary.  Yes, I am a 
dinosaur! LOL!


I have given up with Reset/Reboot buttons. I do know where they are wied 
and what they are supposed to do. I suspect they are now "read" 
differently at least in P45 logic). Fine. Oh, yes, I can be so wrong in 
this belief. :)  But!  I have 3 P45 m/bs running HSN (hot, 
straight, normal) right now. (Very well actually because of this List!)

Maybe just magic or blind dumb luck (BDL).
I am happy with mine!

I can not speak to TweakUI. Sometimes it works; sometimes it causes 
trouble. For now, remove it and continue testing.


I also run plain-vanilla WinXPpro @sp3.  All good here.
