Re: [ha-Safran]: Mel Gibson Film

2004-03-02 Thread Yehuda Herskowitz
I do not think Mel Gibson's film is anti-semitic.
Further, I think it is an enormous chutzpa for Jews to
think, that they can dictate to gentiles whether or
not they can express, in a public medium, fundamental
points of their faith.

Do we want to discuss the Gibson movie on this forum?

2004-03-02 Thread Dr. Donald J. Weinshank
Please read, then cut below here indicated.

Do we want to discuss the Gibson movie on this forum? I am acutely sensitive
to listservs which lose focus and therefore audience. People get turned
off by topics not directly relevant to the mission of the listserv. IF but
ONLY IF you feel that the discussion is relevant, please post the following.

[From the Moderator: I think I have to agree. Y. Galron]

=cut here===

Eli Wise's commentary was outstanding. In answer to his comment about
acquiescence, I urge you to read Leon Wieseltier's brilliant review of the
Mel Gibson movie in the forthcoming New Republic.

As a number of reviewers have pointed out, Gibson's favorite role is a
quasi-masochistic one in which the hero is terribly injured by his attackers
but triumphs in the end. This says more about Gibson than theology. What
worries me is how whole-heartedly the Christian Right seems to embrace this
film. I went by one local church recently which had this film's opening on
its sign rather than its usually hortatory message.

The key issue here is that we Jews do not exist on sufferance (unlike St.
Augustine's views on this subject). Gibson is entitled to make money any way
he can, but we must not acquiesce in his portrayal of Jews.

In the open discussion of the topic last Friday night at our synagogue, I
urged people to read two books.

Professor Fredriksen does an extremely careful analysis of the events of the
turbulent First Century. This is a must read book for people who want to
understand the origins of both Christianity and Judaism. We are descended
from the Pharisees and their successors (and contemporaries) the Rabbis, who
shaped what is modern Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in 70 C.E.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Mel Gibson Film

2004-03-02 Thread Joshua Sharf
The sense that I get, without yet having seen the film, is that it's pretty
much what you make of it. I do think it's incumbent upon people to see
something before criticizing it, though.

The reaction of all of my Christian friends who take their religion
seriously, most of them fundamentalist, is that it makes no sense from a
theological standpoint to blame the Jews for Jesus's death. (The blood
libel, the line from Matthew that was quoted, does not appear in the film.
Also, Gibson's hands are the one seen driving in the first nails.) If they
start off from that point of view, the film's probably as harmless as
anything else. If they start off believing that you and I are personally
responsible for Easter, the film probably could be used as a focal point for
all the old hostilities.

Here in Denver, the Pastor of a local Pentacostalist church used the
occasion to put up a sign saying, Jews Killed the Lord Jesus. Not only
did about 150 local Christians turn out (along with about 50 Jews) to
protest to sign, but the Pastor soon found himself in a small minority
within his own congregation. The next day he put up a sign sort of
apologizing. (The kind of, sorry if I offended anyone apology.) The
point is that without the opposition of local Christians, the sign would
probably still be up there.

In any case, the healthiest relationship between Jews and Christians is
probably one of mutual respect from a distance. We can't dictate tenets of
their faith to them, and we certainly have had enough of them trying to tell
us what to believe. My personal experience, for what it's worth, is that
serious Christanity, as practiced here in the States, is moving in that
direction.

[ha-Safran]: Clarification

2004-03-02 Thread Eli Wise
I am surprised that anyone would suggest that I want to make this forum a
place for discussion of Mel Gibson's film. When I suggest reaction it is in
the way we do our professional work. I hardly think that creating a resource
is tantamount to preventing Christians from observing their faith. We are in
a profession that seeks to prevent ignorance. A bibliography or database on
this controversial film is not out of line with our professional
responsibilities.

The Rabbis warn us that we should know how to answer an apikoros. Let us
take this warning further and say we should know how to answer regarding
this controversial film. It doesn't mean to picket the theater, threaten
Gibson etc. We are information professionals lets gather information and
prevent ignorance and educate.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Mel Gibson Film

2004-03-02 Thread Cheryl Banks
Friends:

I agree with Eli's cogent statements, but I think there is one thing
that is being overlooked in this debate.

Our role as information specialists is to provide information, no doubt
about that. But in the case of this film, I have to add that (and now
I'm speaking as the librarian in a large Conservative synagogue) I feel
that it is our job to educate JEWS, not because the film is anti-semitic
or isn't, but because many, many Jews don't even know the ISSUES. The
people who have come to me for information are doing so because they
don't know the history of the first century, they don't know who Pontius
Pilate or Herod was, they aren't familiar with what is in the gospels at
all (his blood be on you and on your children), because they are,
frankly, afraid (yes, that is the right word) to look into
Jewish-Christian relations.

We, as Judaica librarians, and as information specialists, I feel,
should make the ecucational resources available, without judging the
film, and without judging Christian beliefs. This is an opportunity for
educating the Jewish community, an opportunity for dialogue. Hopefully
people will not have a knee-jerk reaction to the movie (and certainly,
they should not if they have not seen it), but will be interested in
finding out about the roots of anti-semitism, the influence of the
gospels in anti-semitism, and the ways in which it can be combatted in
today's society. Look at it as a learning opportunity.

In the case of this forum, extensive discussion about the movie itself
is probably not warranted, but discussion of the resources that could
help all of us is crucial.

Subject: Mel Gibson

In light of the publicity of the release of Mel Gibson's film, The
Passion..., we would like to alert you to available resource material on
the BJE's Educational Resource Center's page -
http://www.bjeny.org/erc_CurrentEvents.asp?dept=Educational%20Resources.

These materials were developed after a meeting convened by BJE with staff
from ADL, AJCommitee, JESNA, the JCRC of NY, and BJE.

Kudos to Emily Witty, Orna Sheena, and Mendy Sudranski for their usual
high-quality and creative work and quick turnaround time. Special thanks
also to Bill Rothchild and Etzion Neuer of ADL, David Elcott of AJCommittee,
Elisa Haidt of JESNA, Michael Miller and Craig Miller of the JCRC of NY for
their guidance, cooperation, insights, and materials.

We are surveying schools as to their needs and interest. We are also
suggesting that if their students tell teachers about severe problems they
may encounter due to the film, principals should immediately report it to
the ADL, AJC, or JCRC. Gray Area issues -- for example, a sense of change
in relationships or friendship with non-Jewish friends -- are to be
reported to BJE area offices for data collection if students raise it.

We are also encouraging Jewish teachers, as you will see in the materials,
to try to understand this event in the context of great inter-faith progress
in the United States and to be aware of and analyze their own possible
internal prejudices.

Subject: Ballot on the Revised ISBN: DIS 2108

Dear NISO members,
The revised ISO standard International Standard book Number, DIS 2108,is
now out for ballot. A PDF of DIS 2108 is on the NISO website in the Voting
Members section. The ballot will close: June 1, 2004.

NISO, as the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to TC 46 is required to
submit the U.S. vote on DIS 2108. All NISO voting members are TAG-members.
You are, therefore, invited to vote and comment. Your comments will be
considered in shaping the U.S. response.

DIS 2108 changes the ISBN number significantly:
*The ISBN is expanded from 10-digits to 13-digits. This change increases
the pool of numbers available for assignment and aligns the ISBN system
with product numbering conventions used globally. *In addition, the
section on Assignment of the ISBN has been expanded (see Section 5) and a
section on Metadata has been added (see Annex E).

Other ISBN Resources:
If you have any questions on the standard or its implementation there are
two good resources available to you:

*The International ISBN Agency has issued the first set of implementation
guidelines for the 13-digit ISBN:
http://www.isbn-international.org/revision.html.
These Guidelines are intended to provide guidance for all ISBN user
sectors and to help organizations prepare for implementation of the new
13-digit ISBN format in January 2007. These guidelines may be subject to
further development so please bookmark that site for updates (instead of
copying the guidelines).

*A set of Frequently Asked Questions explaining the changes to the ISBN
system is available on the Web at:
http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/iso/tc46sc9/isbn.htm.

ANSI Notice
ANSI requires that the following notice be shared with all TAG members:
Permission is granted by the American National Standards Institute to
electronically reproduce this draft International Standard (DIS 2108) for
the purpose of review and comment related to the preparation of the U.S.
position. All other rights are reserved.

Appreciations
Finally, a team of dedicated standards professionals from the book and
library community have worked together since early-2002 to revise, expand,
and refine the ISBN. Congratulations to the U.S. representatives who have
worked long and hard to get us to the DIS in only two years: Michael Cairns
(R. R. Bowker), Richard Stark (Barnes and Noble), Laurie Stark (Random
House), Albert Simmonds (Dawson Simmonds, Inc.), Wendell Lotz (Ingram).
This two-year timeline may be a new land-speed record for ISO standards
development!

REMINDER
The ballot deadline is June 1, 2004. You are encouraged to vote on the
website.
