RE: [ha-Safran]: Weeding the collection

2004-03-05 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
I was asked to help on a similar project at my synagogue library. One big
source of frustration for me was that they didn't have any kind of mission
statement. Its hard to know what books are appropriate for the collection
if you don't know by whom and how the library will be used. When I asked
our committee questions like: do the Rabbis use the library for their
research? (old books good) are there adult text study classes? (old books
good) book clubs? (old books probably not good) student groups (old book
probably not good) using it, they didn't really know. But this info is
essential before you start weeding. good luck!

[ha-Safran]: Weeding the collection

2004-03-05 Thread Amy Wissoker Graham
I would very much like to begin weeding our synagogue library
collection. However, unlike topics like science where there are clear
'age of material' guidelines, a religion-based collection seems very
daunting to weed. I plan to include our Rabbi in the process, but I'm
wondering whether anyone has seen (or written) articles on weeding
Judaic collections.

I have already checked the AJL publications list and the Hasafran
archive and found nothing.

Thanks,
Amy

RE: [ha-Safran]: Library hours-advice needed

2004-03-05 Thread Rivka Strom
My experience is much the same as yours. This is what I have done for our
library:
1-Monthly column in the newletter for the synagogue or the school.
2-Go through the children's section and take out the books that pertain to
an upcoming holiday put them in a holiday box (this is a cardboard box that
you have wrapped in pretty paper and put a label on). Have a box for each
appropriate age group.
3-Every other month do a book review in you column. I was amazed at how
many people read that column.
4-Put in the synagogue announcements about things like Hebrew Book week,
Jewish Geneology Week, etc.
5-Make announcements about new acquisitions to the library and make sure
you remember to the the donor.
6-Make sure that your hours are convenient. Since you are Conservative,
does your synagogue object to you opening up after services on Shabbat?
7-Have the school come over say on a quarterly basis to tour the library.
Find out what they are studying ahead of time and take those books out to
show them to the student.
8-Have a program called something like Storytime or the Pajama Parables
where the little ones can come in their PJs and listen to a storyteller or
to a story and look at the pictures. The parents can then take them
straight home and to bed.

Re: [ha-Safran]: library planning

2004-03-05 Thread BookChic2
Hi:
Linworth Publishing has books on library design. These books include floor
space requirements and shelving requirements based on population.
We expect to be moving in to our new library in the fall. It's both an
exciting and tiring process. Good Luck!

[ha-Safran]: Library planning

2004-03-05 Thread talya
Hi all,
We are currently going to have our library space altered here at our
elementary school. It seems we will be losing some space and we are
wondering about issues of space, student / seating ratios and any
development standards that we need to be aware of.
Does any know of any books or links that could guide us in this new endeavor?
Thanks in advance,

[ha-Safran]: Israeli History books

2004-03-05 Thread Brooke Kalter
I am a graduate student in my last semester of Library school, and I am
thinking of writing my final research project on an evaluation of Israeli
History books in public libraries, in approximately 5 public libraries in
the State of CT.

This project is born out of the sad fact at a previous public library I had
to withdraw books which the librarians did not consider Current but I
considered Valid and I wondered if it was happening at more places than
the place where I had worked.

My questions to the Hasafran list include

Do you think this is a relevant study?

Is there an existing bibliography on the Arab- Israeli conflict that you
could recommend with a CORE Bibliography that every library should have.

any comments or ideas please email me directly [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks, Todah Raba
