RE: [ha-Safran]: Librarians against SARS!!!

2006-05-27 Thread carol joseph
My stance re keywords: Whose key word? Yours? Mine? A Californian's? A
Hennepin County resident's? A Parisian's? A Tasmanian's? A Haifan's? Do
you use state of the art or street words? You miss a lot or else get too
much with keywords. Most people seem satisfied with whatever they find;
many may not even realize how often the first results have bought their
way to that rank. Anyone working with Hebrew or other non-Roman scripts
knows how many transliterated versions of a word or name can be
justified.
What Google and other good search engines and software do is to have a
version of subject authorities that is transparent. But it doesn't do
the users any good to not advise them of legitimate terminology; each
time the word search is tried it's brand new; the results may vary.
SARs by the way, are probably more useful to acquisitions librarians
than to patrons.

[ha-Safran]: New AJL Publication

2006-05-27 Thread egensler
AJL is proud to announce a new publication by Dr. Susan Freiband
entitled Collection Development in Smaller Judaica Libraries. This
is a two volume set consisting of an Introduction and Guide and a
Resource Guide.

The goal of this publication is to provide useful, practical
information to help with collection development in smaller Judaica
libraries, including Temple or synagogue libraries, Jewish day school
libraries, Jewish community center/public libraries or special libraries.

The intended audience of the Guide includes heads of these libraries
who have had little or no formal training in the field, as well as
library personnel who need updating and/or refreshing of the
knowledge, attitudes and skills important for developing library
collections today. The Resource Guide includes a bibliography of
useful tools for newcomers to the field, as well as for experienced
personnel who need more current information.

Barbara Y. Leff was instrumental in assisting Dr. Freiband with her work.

Updates to the Resource Guide will be available periodically on the
AJL website, for members only.

This publication may be ordered as a two volume set or by individual volume.

Costs are as follows:
2 volume set:Members: $20. Nonmembers: $25.
Intro and Guide: Members: $15. Nonmembers: $18.

[ha-Safran]: RE: Statement on LC

2006-05-27 Thread Aviva Astrinsky
Dear colleagues,

When I first sent my message expressing my opinion re the cancellation
of Series Authority Control by LC Cataloging Admin. -- I received a phone call
from a colleague asking me if I had a suicide wish...
Little did I know how right that colleague was.
The tumult that ensued was loud but unconvincing since nobody took the trouble
to prove how the lack of series authority would hamper access to
online information.

In order to convince your peers that, that indeed, as Ellen Zyroff claims,
"creating and sharing series authority records is important for the
integrity of efficient and effective series title access" you have to
prove that the time and expense involved in creating "CONTROLLED
SERIES TITLE ACCESS"
(not subject and not name authority access, as all my respondents
tried to preach to the converted) -- is in fact cost effective,
and efficient in this day and age.

It seems to me that the only people who constantly use series authorities
are acquisitions librarians. And if they are indeed qualified librarians,
they should be able to live with the lack of series authority
control. If they are not qualified, they can get additional training.

I, however, suspect that the fierce reaction of the LC Union and
other perennial nay sayers, and the mobilization of ALA in that trivial cause
(would that ALA use as much energy to lobby for increased salaries
and prestige of our profession) is nothing but a Pavlovian reaction
against change,
any change.

Aviva Astrinsky

PS: The word 'Why' denotes a question, not an accusation.

Gee, why do you accuse me of that because I've alerted
the organization to an important issue for the world's
libraries and one which will affect access for all? I
suggested the AJL Board consider the issue and write
an emergy letter, if they choose to do so after
deliberating and getting input. Interestingly, the ALA
Executive Board, which waits for ALA Council input on
the darndest things, saw the issue as a prima facie
case of major bad judgement from a particular unit of
LC and acted immediately on its own, since the change
is imminent. Series cataloging and the role LC has
played in . Have you ever had
a job as a series cataloger? Are you saying you think
that that one unit head at LC has made a good
decision? If so, I would for sure be interested in
hearing your opinion.

Thanks,
Ellen

RE: [ha-Safran]: Librarians against SARS!!!

2006-05-27 Thread Steven Bernstein
For that matter, someone doing a Google keyword search for "Librarians"
and "SARS" would find hundreds of items about the 2003 Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome scare in Toronto and how it scared thousands of
librarians away from the AJL and ALA conferences that took place there
that year. The person might find an item or two about Series Authority
Records, but that person would have to sift through 164,000 results in
order to find them.

Authority control is necessary to give context to data, for only when
data is given a context can it be called "information". I like to
compare keyword searching to the microwave: they're both quick and easy
to use for basic needs, but if you want higher quality results you need
to use more tried and true methods. A kitchen in which the only
appliance is a microwave is a batchelor pad, not a kitchen. A catalog in
which the only method of searching is keyword searching is a database,
not a library information system.

Yehoshua, and the role of every Jew in promoting

2006-05-27 Thread Bernard Katz
Aaron Kuperman and Daniel Stuhlman have responded appropriately to
Aviva Astrinsky's over-zealous endorsement of keyword searching. I
recall several scholarly studies I read in graduate library school
over 35 years ago that corroborate what they've said... and more!

The advantages of a controlled vocabulary approach to subject
searching (ie. subject headings) with cross references of various
types is well established and has been significantly strengthened
through the use of computer-based catalogue searching. There's lots
of documented theory behind these things, folks, if you'd only take a
look at your old grad school notes :-)

Where I heartily agree with Aviva is her remark about not doing any
analysis of individual titles in a series. That's like throwing out
the baby with the bathwater! Viva Aviva on that score!

What does this have to do with series authority headings?

I never expressed opposition to names and subjects authorities.
I just think that series authoities are a waste of time, while cataloging
each and every distinct title in a monographic series provides much
improved access.

HEBREW UNIVERSITY MAGNES PRESS AND PUBLISHERS ROW UNVEIL WORLD'S FIRST
i-BOOK STORE

Skokie, Illinois, May 24, 2006 Hebrew University Magnes Press and Publishers
Row announce the first ever bookstore capable of selling online editions of
published books as complete works, or by the chapter or page.š

Customers can now choose how they will use each "tru-image" title, affecting
the price that they pay.š Options include the ability to buy access to
titles permanently, or for a limited time of one or six months and to choose
the level of functionality beyond searching and reading, such as the ability
to copy, print or download.š All Magnes Press i-books are Unicode compliant,
allowing search of English or Hebrew words.š

The Magnes Press online bookstore:
www.publishersrow.com/Stores/default.asp?shid=10

Publishers Row, Inc., a provider of online services for book publishers,
powers the Magnes store using BooksellerT, its Web based book publishing
platform. This revolutionary platform allows publishers, along with their
booksellers, to make complete replicas of their books available for
examination and purchase for use on any Internet connected computing device.

Now all publishers can show the inside of their featured books
cover-to-cover in a secure, controlled environment on their Web site and
those of their resellers. These online editions can be used for promoting
titles pre-release, offering electronic examination copies, engaging more
book reviewers at a lower cost, and as stand-alone online products. They
are available for use and sale to any reseller in a publisher's distribution
network.

Online titles function like full-featured downloadable e-books using
familiar hypertext links for ease of navigation. The user can jump from the
table of contents, indexes and even in-between related books to specified
sections. BookSellerT does not require the user to download large files, to
open additional software such as Adobe's Acrobat Reader or to install
security plug-ins to read the books. Because server-based technology makes
them secure, publishers can set preferences to control copying, printing,
downloading and access to free previews.

Any commercial printer should be able to do your job. I would not
advise using pressure sensitive or stick-on labels. They tend to dry
out and ruin the book with the residue.

If you want color, go to a commercial printer and print on acid free
paper. This should be no problem for your laser printer when you
want to personalize them. An alternative is to print the whole book
plate on your own color laser printer.
