[ha-Safran]: URJ Biennial in San Diego
Just for information -- Is anyone planning to be there next month? I know I'll be pretty busy, but if someone is willing to meet me, I'd like to walk through the Convention hall with an eye to having a presence in 2009 (wherever that will be). Re: [ha-Safran]: Jerusalem Report
I don't think that is the Jerusalem Report calling you but rather a magazine sales group. I once had a huge problem when I finally agreed to resubscribe through them, not knowing they were the actual company, and the money etc was not passed on to the Jerusalem Report. Try contacting the real Jerusalem Report and tell them about the problem. I was told several years ago that they were no longer using that company for sales. Re: [ha-Safran]: Movie classification
Not a warning label, but I think we should try to put descriptive/summary notes (520 in MARC) in the catalog for as many materials as possible, and I would note in the record for this film that it is a tragicomedy with poignant elements as well as containing very humorous material. This is in accord with the reviews I just read of the film. Maybe some people will say that any sort of caveat equals censorship, but I think it's doing a service to provide descriptions of the materials whenever possible, and the patron can check the catalog to help make decisions about borrowing materials. RE: [ha-Safran]: Movie classification
I don't know the movie, but from I've just been reading of reviews, it sounds pretty crass and awful, so why it's in the Jewish Heritage Collection puzzles me. It is rated R, besides. One review says that the DVD is worthwhile because Crystal explains a lot. That aside, however, I don't think there's any way to catalog it except as comedy, and we of course can't label things -- I suppose one could mention to someone thinking of taking it out that it's a pretty dark comedy, which is apparently true. Libraries don't have warning labels, but I don't know how to convey this to an upset person. The movie _is_ rated R, which gives the would-be viewer a clue, I guess. RE: [ha-Safran]: Movie classification
Thank you to all of you who responded to my posting (below). For those who would like to know, the general consensus was: --use empathy and active listening skills when responding to the patron (which I did--although she was still not satisfied) --explain that the DVD came pre-categorized (which I did--again, she was dissatisfied with this) --comedies have a range and not all people find all comedies funny and it is not the job of the librarian to know who will find a comedy funny or not (although we can offer an opinion if we know what the patron is looking for and we are familiar with the movie) --explain in a 520 note that the comedy may be a drama/comedy or have tragic elements (which only helps if the patron chooses the film from the online catalog instead of off the shelf...) --every one responding agreed that warning labels on library items are not appropriate Thank you again for your replies! Re: [ha-Safran]: Movie classification
imds.com and the New York Times review of the movie both call _Mr. Saturday Night_ a comedy. Comedy vs. tragedy is not something librarians or book reviewers have ever warned people about. It would be too hard to determine who is sensitive to the issues raised by the movie. Like most well written comedy, _Mr. Saturday Night,_ appeals to a large and varied audience. Some will laugh and some won't. If you cover your face and laugh a passer-by will not be able to tell if you are laughing or crying.
