[ha-Safran]: Book "Academics Against Israel and the Jews"

2007-12-11 Thread Ashley Perry
New publication from the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs

Title:Academics Against Israel and the Jews

Edited by Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld, Chairman of the Board of Fellows
at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (www.jcpa.org)

Foreword by Natan Sharansky

The new century has seen many attempts to discriminate against
Israel, its academic institutions, and its scholars in several
Western countries. This includes boycotting Israeli universities and
academics as well as calling for divestment from Israeli securities.
The campaigns frequently use anti-Semitic motifs and sometimes also
involve violent anti-Semitic acts. The propaganda war that is
perpetrated against Israel, Zionists and Jews on the university
campus should be a source of worry to all.

Eighteen essays from four continents discuss a variety of cases of
discrimination and how Israel and Jews can defend themselves against
such initiatives. Among the essays are analyses of events on many
prestigious Western campuses of higher-education, including Columbia,
Rutgers, Harvard, California-Irvine, Concordia and SOAS in the UK.
The book also has chapters about anti-Semitism on Australian,
Austrian, Canadian, British, Dutch and European campuses.

There are also chapters on the reaction to anti-Semitism by
organizations such as Stand With Us and Scholars for Peace in the
Middle East. The recent attempted boycott by the UCU in the U.K is
explained and analyzed. Also included is a chapter on anti-Semitism
in Palestinian universities.

Natan Sharansky has contributed the foreword and there is a lengthy
informative introduction by Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld, where the global
situation is described and pieced together.

These actions should be seen in the context of the much broader,
multiple, ongoing attacks against Israel and the Jewish people. These
initiatives are part of a postmodern global war and often are
directly related to anti-Semitism. This global war is multi-sourced,
fragmented, and often diffuse and discontinuous.

The discriminatory actions against Israel prove that in many
universities, academic freedom is abused as a subtle device to
promote extremist ideologies and protect misbehavior. This is one
among many reasons why what happens on campus should be subject to
much greater external scrutiny. That would likely lead to a
long-lasting general reassessment of issues concerning academia such
as free speech, academic freedom, uncontrolled campus extremism
including incitement to violence, university autonomy, the
politicization of science, and the discrepancy in norms between
academia and society at large.

"This volume is essential reading for all…. Read this book, learn,
and go forth and speak truth to bigotry." Professor Alan Dershowitz,
Harvard University

[ha-Safran]: Different kind of query

2007-12-11 Thread Miller, Philip
Here is a different kind of query

Many years ago someone asked me what the strangest or most bizarre
reference question I had ever fielded. This person and I had not been
in contact for almost twenty years, until yesterday, and the first
thing he did was remind me of his question.

This was my answer: About thirty years ago someone called our Library
and wanted to know if there was a translation of Mein Kampf in Hebrew.

My "query" to you, dear colleagues, is: What is the strangest or most
bizarre reference question you have ever fielded?

(Answers are not important – Only the question!)

This could be fun!

Description
A celebrated botanist, who had won world fame as the discoverer of 'wild
wheat,' Aaron Aaronsohn (1876 1919) created the first Jewish
Agricultural Experiment Station in Palestine then under Turkish rule in
1910. His venture was supported and funded from the u.s. by a group
which included Julius Rosenwald, Justices Louis D. Brandeis and Felix
Frankfurter (both later on the u.s. Supreme Court), Judah L. Magnes
(later President of the Hebrew University), and Henrietta Szold, the
founder of Hadassah. In World War I, reacting against the oppressive
Turkish regime, Aaronsohn founded a Jewish spy organization, nili, to
help the British in the forthcoming battle for Palestine. Here is told
the story of Aaronsohn, who is revealed as a master of strategy, and his
sister Sarah, whose self-sacrificing devotion to the cause shows her to
be a great historic personality in her own right. Historian Shmuel Katz
here rectifies the absence of a comprehensive biography of Aaronsohn and
the nili spy ring. Meticulously researched British War Office
intelligence documents and the letters and field reports of nili s
central figures illustrate the crucial contribution made by nili to the
British conquest of Palestine. Powerfully written, with deep sensitivity
to the emotional lives of the people portrayed, The Aaronsohn Saga is
both solid history and a marvelous read.

About the Author
Shmuel Katz was born in South Africa in 1914. He moved to Palestine in
1936 but in 1939, invited by Vladimir Jabotinsky to come to London, he
there founded the weekly Jewish Standard to promote the idea of a Jewish
national army in the war against Nazi Germany. He returned to Palestine
in 1946. A journalist, author, translator, historian, political
activist, and book publisher, he has enjoyed a multifaceted career
spanning many disciplines. A member of the High Command of the Irgun
Zvai Leumi, member of the first Israeli Knesset, and advisor to Israeli
Prime Minister Menachem Begin in 1977, Katz has been intimately involved
in the entire history of the modern State of Israel. His books, written
in both English and Hebrew and translated into other languages as well,
include Days of Fire, Battleground: Fact and Fantasy in Palestine,
Battletruth: The World and Israel, the Hollow Peace, and Lone Wolf: A
Biography of Vladimir Gefen Publishing House (Ze ev) Jabotinsky.

'...Katz s language is fluent and engaging, [reading] more like a novel
than a work of history. He paints colourful portraits of all the main
figures in the epoch and in doing so he also provides a fine picture of
the life and times of the Yishuv and its relations with the outside
world.' In the contemporary review of the 1936 travelogue Palestine on
the Eve, by the Hungarian-born journalist Ladislas Farrago, a British
writer wrote: ...one day, truth will emerge from the well, and the
Empire will learn what it owed to Aaron and Sarah Aaronsohn, Avshalom
Feinberg, and others of that devoted band, who endured and died for
their faith under the inspiration of Aaron. Thanks to the indefatigable
efforts and meticulous scholarship of Shmuel Katz, it seems that one day
may have finally arrived.

[ha-Safran]: Book "Academics Against Israel and the Jews"

Subject: [ha-Safran]: Book "Academics Against Israel and the Jews"

New publication from the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs

Title:Academics Against Israel and the Jews

Edited by Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld, Chairman of the Board of Fellows at
the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (www.jcpa.org)

Foreword by Natan Sharansky

The new century has seen many attempts to discriminate against Israel,
its academic institutions, and its scholars in several Western
countries. This includes boycotting Israeli universities and academics
as well as calling for divestment from Israeli securities. The
campaigns frequently use anti-Semitic motifs and sometimes also
involve violent anti-Semitic acts. The propaganda war that is
perpetrated against Israel, Zionists and Jews on the university campus
should be a source of worry to all.

The
book also has chapters about anti-Semitism on Australian, Austrian,
Canadian, British, Dutch and European campuses.

There are also chapters on the reaction to anti-Semitism by
organizations such as Stand With Us and Scholars for Peace in the
Middle East. The recent attempted boycott by the UCU in the U.K is
explained and analyzed. Also included is a chapter on anti-Semitism in
Palestinian universities.

These
initiatives are part of a postmodern global war and often are directly
related to anti-Semitism. This global war is multi-sourced,
fragmented, and often diffuse and discontinuous.

The discriminatory actions against Israel prove that in many
universities, academic freedom is abused as a subtle device to promote
extremist ideologies and protect misbehavior. This is one among many
reasons why what happens on campus should be subject to much greater
external scrutiny. That would likely lead to a long-lasting general
reassessment of issues concerning academia such as free speech,
academic freedom, uncontrolled campus extremism including incitement
to violence, university autonomy, the politicization of science, and
the discrepancy in norms between academia and society at large.

"This volume is essential reading for all…. Read this book, learn, and
go forth and speak truth to bigotry." Professor Alan Dershowitz,
Harvard University
