Re: [ha-Safran]: Adin Steinsaltz Talmud

2009-11-23 Thread Yisrael Dubitsky
As far as I can tell, 41 volumes of the Bavli have been printed so
far. A projected 2 vols on Hullin and one on Niddah will total, when
finished, 44 volumes. The 42 vol complete set advertised on the
Steinsaltz site includes the 41 printed on the Bavli, and the one on
the Yerushalmi.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Refusing to be enemies

2009-11-23 Thread David Elazar
Safranim shalom,

Just the blurb describing the movie bothers me.

The words Holocaust and Nakbah should not be used together. There
should not be the slightest hint of comparison.
And why Nakbah terror? Is there a woman representing Palestinian
terror? The trailer shows the Jews suffering under the Nazis and the
Palestinians under the Israelis.

How is Nakbah described? By the fact that Arab leaders did not accept
the 1947 UN Partition Plan, and called for the Arab residents of the
British Mandate of Palestine to leave temporarily while the Arab
armies crush the newly declared Jewish State so they then can
return? Or is Israel to blame for everything?

Dialogue is good, but not when totally anti Israel. Be careful,
check their website and who the people are behind this movie.

I have not seen the movie, but from what I have seen and read on the
internet, Israel is portrayed as the villain, facts are
misrepresented, and the Land of Israel as the Jewish historical
homeland misunderstood.

I, personally, would not include this in my library.

All the best,

David

relevance of Jewish law, as well as the challenges of secularism,
modern history (including the Holocaust), feminism and religious
pluralism. Featured are those philosophers of encounter – Franz
Rosenzweig, Martin Buber, and Emmanuel Levinas, as well as Joseph
Soloveitchik, Gershom Scholem, Arthur Cohen, Eliezer Schweid, Emil
Fackenheim, and Irving Greenberg.

[ha-Safran]: Plaut family books

2009-11-23 Thread Jaffee, Cheryl
I am posting the following letter on behalf of Rabbi Jonathan Plaut:

I have a collection of remainder books authored by W. Gunther Plaut,
Elizabeth S. Plaut and myself, which I want to donate to Jewish
institutions throughout the world. This is the second (and last)
notice for these titles.

I am pleased to forward them to you at my expense. I ask that you
please list the books in your library catalogue and on WorldCat if
you are a partner.

These are the remaining books available:

Through The Sound of Many Voices was written as a tribute for my
father. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, 23 leading writers,
scholars, and religious leaders honored him by writing original
articles in their own fields of interest and scholarship.

Included are articles by Eli Wiesel, William Hallo, Walter Mondale, Rabbi
Walter Wurzberger, Robert Gordis, and Emil Fackenheim that appear in
no other publication.

Your Neighbour Is a Jew is a unique book that clears the air of
prejudice and provides a lively catalyst for discussion and better
understanding among people of all faiths stressing the common
heritage of Christian and Jew. This is a book for non-Jew and Jew –
one of the few of its kind addressed to both, providing a platform of
mutual understanding.

My father also ventured into fiction, writing short stories and
novels. We have the following remainder books available: Hanging
Threads is a book of short stories to feed the imagination.

Die Tora In judischer Auslegung (Deuteronomium) The Torah in German

My mother's books, The Guggenheim/Wormser Family: A Genealogical 300
Year Memoir, and The Gumprichs of Munster/Westphalia: A Tale of Four
Continents are extensive studies of genealogy and trace many roots,
which would be of interest to Jewish students. For an example, the
actor Kevin Kline is a relative.

Please remember that we do not want any books exchanged or sold, so
let us know what will fit with your collection.

I would truly like your library to have these books and look forward
to hearing from you.

[ha-Safran]: Letter on the Wind

2009-11-23 Thread Andrea Rapp
I'm just getting around to adding this children's book, by Sarah
Marwil Lamstein and illustrated by Neil Waldman, to our library
collection for Hanukkah.
I wonder who wrote the afterword, which says: In the Old Testament's
First Book of Maccabees, we read the story of Mattathias
But only Catholic Bibles contain the Books of Maccabees in their
Old Testament. Plus it says that the miracle of the oil story is in
Maccabees, whereas it is really in the Talmud, isn't it?
I think I'll put a little note to this effect in the back cover
of our copy.

[ha-Safran]: Sad news - Frank Unlandherm

2009-11-23 Thread Naomi Steinberger
I received this from Frank's colleagues at Columbia University.

With great sadness I convey the news that Frank Unlandherm

passed away yesterday afternoon. Frank began working at

Columbia University Libraries in 1965, after earning a

degree in Near East Studies from Princeton, traveling and

studying in London and the Middle East. He earned an MLS at

Columbia in 1967. Starting as a cataloger and acquisitions

assistant, Frank became the Middle East Bibliographer in

1969, adding Jewish Studies to his portfolio in 1993. After

retiring in 2004, Frank came back to work part time to help

us with the Jewish Studies collections.

Frank was tireless in his efforts to build strong and

comprehensive collections from and about the Middle East.

Just prior to his retirement he developed the collections in

the Islamic Studies Reading Room in Butler Library. He

assembled one of the first portals for Middle East-related

websites at the dawn of the internet age. He leaves a

distinguished and valuable legacy in all the books and bytes

he curated for faculty, students and scholars at Columbia

and beyond.

We remember him as a cheerful and friendly colleague, never

too shy to ask another selector to pay for one of his books.

His travel and cruise stories were legendary as were his

love a good meal and shopping on eBay. He will be greatly

missed.

To honor Frank's wishes, his family and the libraries are hosting a
gathering at VT Pizza this coming Sunday, Nov. 22nd. It will be an
open house and folks are welcome to stop by any time between 1:00pm
and 4:00pm. We will be in the back room of the restaurant. Any
colleagues from JTS who wish to attend and remember Frank are most welcome.

The Middle East Librarian Association has been discussing the
development of a scholarship to honor Frank and recognize
achievements in this field. I'll be happy to forward this
information to you when available.

the series. On November 7, 2010, Hulin, which deals with the laws of

RE: [ha-Safran]: Picture of Moses Elias Levy

2009-11-23 Thread Rachel Steiner
At the National Library of Israel we did a very extensive search for
a picture of Moses Elias Levy and came up with many articles and
books with information about him. In the biography Moses Levy of
Florida, the author C.S. Monaco writes in his introduction:
Admittedly, it is very unusual for a biography not to have the
benefit of some artistic rendering of the subject. Unlike most
prominent and wealthy individuals of the nineteenth-century, Levy
avoided the portrait studio, apparently because of the biblical
prohibition concerning graven images as well as his own stringent
notions about vanity and self-love. Therefore, he left no image of
himself for others to ponder and, perhaps, to gain insights by.
Fortunately Levy's 1822 citizenship application revealed essential
physical characteristics.
This seems to explain why there are no pictures anywhere, including
the Jewish Museum of Florida and the Florida Historical Society.

2009-11-23 Thread Carol Bell
Dear Friends,

I am really excited about the new Rabbi Rocketpower book, Rabbi
Rocketpower and the Half-Baked Matzah Mystery- A Particularly
Peculiar Passover. Last year my fourth grade students had an
opportunity to read an advance copy and send comments to the Rabbi
Susan Abramson. She mentioned our school's assistance in her acknowledgements!

This is the third Rabbi Rocketpower adventure. Previous books are
Rabbi Rocketpower and the Mystery of the Missing Menorahs (just
reviewed in Jewish Book World magazine) and Rabbi Rocketpower in Who
Hogged the Hallah? Check them out atwww.rabbirocketpower.com. For
those of you in the Greater Boston area, Rabbi Abramson does author
visits. She and her illustrator came to our school two years ago,
and the program was well-received.

2009-11-23 Thread Stuart Schnee
Feldheim Publishers is pleased to announce the publication of:

Religious Compulsions and Fears:
A Guide to Treatment

Under the guise of religious observance, countless Jews are held prey
to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and this book has what it takes to

describes treatment for dealing with children's fears and adult

In a clear, easy-to-follow manner, the author, a renowned clinical
psychologist, describes the nature of religious compulsions and fears
and gives a comprehensive treatment guide that is eminently useful
for sufferers, family members, rabbis, teachers, and therapists. This
book is a breakthrough, a remarkable tool for understanding,
recognizing, and recovering from OCD.

About the Author:

[ha-Safran]: YIVO Encyclopedia

2009-11-23 Thread Zachary M Baker
I am admittedly biased in the matter, but in my opinion if a public
library has the budget and the constituency for a reference work such
as the YIVO Encyclopedia, then acquiring it is really a
no-brainer. This is one of the most important Jewish encyclopedias
to have been published since the original (English-language)
Encyclopaedia Judaica came out in the early 1970s. It covers in
great breadth and depth a region and a range of topics that have been
given comparatively short shrift in other Judaic reference
works. For good reason the YIVO Encyclopedia received the 2009 AJL
Reference Award.

THE JOY OF DANCE – AT ANY AGE

Two films from Ruth Diskin Films that will

make your heart skip and your spirit swing

Ida's Dance Club

Doc. 59 min

Written and Directed by Dalit Kimor

The combination of happiness and laughter , lots of music and
dancing along with depth and smart movie-making have made the film
enjoyable for audiences of any age.

Dancing Alfonso

Doc. 50 min

Written Directed by Barak Heymann

Heyman's camera embraces Alfonso; as he dances elegantly, as he
flirts enthusiastically, as he glides gracefully… He is a man who has
the whole world at his feet and he takes on the world without shame.

Dear Librarian/Professor,

As people are living longer, the issue of how to deal with old age
has taken on additional resonance. Two films from Ruth Diskin Films
allow us a peek at the exceptional inner worlds of senior citizens in
Tel Aviv who have a unique take on getting old.

Dancing Alfonso is an award winning film with a rewarding character
at its center.

Barak Heymann follows a Tel Aviv senior citizen leading a dramatic
life. Alfonso, the lead dancer in a flamenco class with an average
age of 75, uses dance to express the alternating emotions of hope and
rage of a man on the cusp of losing his wife to illness.

Ida's Dance Club is where once a year a ballroom dancing competition
takes place. All the competitors are way past retirement age, but
that doesn't stop them from dancing and singing, from falling in love
and being disappointed. The competition participants hardly know one
another outside the club walls, but their lives, full of problems,
are gradually revealed to us.

We are offering the films for purchase at the price of $300 per title
for universities - and a 10% discount on the purchase of both. The
price for public libraries is $115 per title with a 5% discount for
the purchase of both. Prices do not include shipping and handling.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon-

Ruth

[ha-Safran]: Yiddish Given Names

2009-11-23 Thread Ada Albright
I have been asked by a colleague to post the following:

Message for Jewish Studies librarians and for all interested in Yiddish Studies

As of this writing, WorldCat lists 67 libraries as owners of Rella
Israly Cohn's Yiddish Given Names (Lanham, Md.: Scarecrow Press,
2008), a lexicon focusing on 256 forenames bestowed, as the preface
states, in the modern period, 1750 on, of the Yiddish language.
This published work is based on the author's dissertation.

The book, although not inexpensive, is highly worth recommending as a
learned and deeply interesting reference source and discussion of
Yiddish names, and by extension, of Ashkenazi Jewish naming practices
and Yiddish historical linguistics. Chapters preceding the lexicon
itself review not only the data fields for the names analyzed, but
also the literature on the topic, the history of Yiddish (Earliest
Yiddish appears to have arisen around 1000 CE) and Ashkenazi Jewish
naming (contrasted with Sephardic practices).

Rella Israly Cohn did not live to see final production of this book.
One of her children, a linguistics professor here at Cornell,
recently brought it to my attention, concerned it should receive
consideration in the wider community of readers at multiple levels of
interest. I had forgotten about this work but now remember happily
ordering it last summer for the Cornell Library: though not a Yiddish
speaker (yet), I am thoroughly sympathetic in a professional sense to
serious efforts to study and even propagate this remarkable language.

Now I have borrowed Cornell's copy and find enjoyment in both its
scholarly depth and its careful organization.

Respectfully,

Patrick J. Stevens
Selector for Jewish Studies
Cornell University Library

[ha-Safran]: Israel Armstrong series by Ian Sansom

2009-11-23 Thread Rachel Kamin
Does anyone know if the Mobile Library Mystery series by Ian Sansom
- The Case of the Missing Books, Mr. Dixon Disappears, The Book Stops
Here, and the newest installment, The Bad Book Affair - have
significant or any Jewish content? The main character, Israel
Armstrong, is described in the descriptions as Jewish and from the
review in Booklist (11/15/09), the fourth book may have Jewish
content. Since it doesn't make sense to only purchase the fourth
book, I'm wondering if the entire series is a worthwhile addition for
a synagogue library. Our patrons are always looking for lighter
reads. If anyone has firsthand experience with these books, I'd
appreciate your insight.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Refusing to be enemies

2009-11-23 Thread Andrea Rapp

This narrative--i.e. version of history-- now permeates academia,
textbook publishing and much of trade-book publishing.
It is full of falsehoods and bias.
