[ha-Safran]: Historic Jewish Children's Books
Andrea Rapp and Fred Isaac both write about old, or is it historic?, children's books. Deciding which category describes a book is one of the first steps in determining what to do with it. Age alone doesn't determine historic value and current library thought has it that old books on the shelf are unappealing and downright detrimental to library use. My local public library adheres to that philosophy so while you can find multiple copies of books published in the last few years on the open shelves, you can't find anything published more than 20 years ago. It makes for a very frustrating experience when one is using the library for more than browsing. With Jewish children's books, I think that many old ones can be considered historic because of the rarity of books for Jewish children within children's literature as a whole and especially because individual titles often mark significant developments in the relatively short history of American Jewish children's book publishing. Since there are no historic Jewish children's book collections in the United States - or anywhere else, as far as I know -research by scholars, students, and authors is impeded and a small but important part of the children's book publishing record is, at best, incomplete. If a Judaic library has the space, setting aside historic children's books into a separate collection would be a good idea so long as the space is designated, accessible, identified, and physically maintained. (A musty basement storage room isn't an archive and it isn't a historic collection.) Online catalogs make books accessible to far-flung searchers and the titles in a special historic collection can be indicated in the catalog record, along with information on each book's content, physical characteristics, and publication data. Libraries within a city or region could cooperate in establishing such a collection, deciding on where it will be housed, how it will be advertised in the community, etc. The need for at least one significant collection of historic American Jewish children's books certainly exists so the issues raised by Andrea and Fred are important beyond their specific library circumstances. [ha-Safran]: NIKITA KINO - a Worthy Addition to your Collection/Course
Dear Safranim, We are happy to let you know about a remarkable film that is part personal recollections and part historical recording , entitled NIKITA KINO. This film is a must for Soviet studies! Filmmaker Vivian Ostrovsky traveled with her family from Brazil to the Soviet Union in the 1970's. Her father, originally from Russia, brought them there to visit his family and to tour around places of his past. NIKITA KINO is made up entirely of family footage shot in and around Moscow mixed with found archival footage from the Soviet Union of the time. The story that the film tells is both private in its intimate details and sweeping in the history it presents. The idea of identity and history is played with and looked at with a sense of thrill and the utmost seriousness at the same time. We would be glad for NIKITA KINO to be included in your library collection. If you are planning programming having to do with Russia and the Soviet Union NIKITA KINO is a must have. We would be happy to send you a DVD for preview of this special film. The purchase price for university libraries is $300 plus shipping and handling and $115 plus shipping and handling for public libraries. [ha-Safran]: Weine or Elazar for Small Reform Synagogue
I've already replied personally to Michelle Sandler about this, but wanted to remind everyone of the usefulness of the AJL Wiki for these kinds of questions. There's a wonderful page with concise information and very helpful links about cataloging for synagogues and centers at http://ajlwiki.pbworks.com/Cataloging-for-Synagogue-and-Center-Libraries that answers many questions about this topic. The Wiki has lots more useful information. Link to it directly from the AJL home page. If you have great information to add to add to the Wiki, just use the Edit tab on the top of any page to submit permission to do so. Diane Romm and Joyce Levine are our wonderful chairs of this project. It was wonderful seeing so many of you at convention in Seattle and I add my thanks to the very hard-working convention committee that made it such a success! [ha-Safran]: Weeding old children's books
Several years ago when Har Sinai was moving fron Trenton to Pennington, we had to discard many books. It's one thing to pack up move books that you are going to keep, but quite another to move books you have decided, for whatever reason, not to move. I ultimately sent 4 boxes to Harvard for their archives 5 boxes to U of Arizona in Tempe. Reimburse us for postage, you may have them. The old 40s 50s textbooks were simply discarded because no one wanted them - muy Rabbi said that many of them weren't very good when they first came out. RE: [ha-Safran]: Early Jewish children's books
Dear Fred, Nice to hear your voice. Your e-mail got me thinking. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have one place where early Jewish children's books could be housed? That way, anyone doing research in that field could go there instead of traveling about the country for bits and pieces. Here in Toronto, we have a collection of old important children's books housed at one branch of the public library. Is there something similar somewhere in the U.S? Perhaps this could be a project of the AJL, where the collection could be housed at one of our member libraries. What do you think? RE: [ha-Safran]: Early Jewish children's books
Hi, Fred-- Since you're setting up an archive with books, I thought you might appreciate a rare book librarian's perspective. Assuming that you are talking about a situation where your library purchased multiple copies of a particular title deemed to be popular, they are probably identical. Nonetheless I would check each one. I don't think you need to keep all of them, but I would look out for: 1. The copies in best condition 2. Hardcover copies in their original dust jackets 3. First editions and first printings 4. Any copies presented to the library by private owners, particularly if there is evidence of provenance of importance to your own collection (i.e. a teacher, principal, rabbi, or donor with a special connection to your library) 5. If you have evidence of variations in form of issue (i.e. different bindings, for example. This is less likely than if you were working with mostly nineteenth century pieces, but it's worth keeping an eye out none theless) Presumably the copies you retain will be used mostly for displays and class presentations and be available to researchers, rather than to be issued to general borrowers. I wish you all the best. Dan Rettberg Daniel J. RE: [ha-Safran]: Early Jewish children's books
Jewish children's books, like all children's literature, present a historical mirror of childhood. Children are indelibly molded by the tales they read and hear. These are also the stories that one day they will share with their own offspring. Jewish libraries should collect and preserve old children books. As time goes by, they as they become source material for literary and historical research. Please don't discard your old children's books. If you have no space for them, You can offer them to Jewish academic research libraries. [ha-Safran]: Syd Hoff research
Hello. I am a Miami, FL-based journalist researching children's book illustrator, writer and humorist Syd Hoff (1912-2004). I am also curating an exhibition about him and his children's book art at the Miami Dade Public Library in 2012 for his centennial. Hoff traveled to many schools and libraries in his life. I am looking to connect with school, public and synagogue librarians who hosted Hoff at their library. I am looking to hear about these visits as well as see photographs and press coverage of these events.
