I'm writing to see if you know of anyone or any institution which may want a 23 volume set of The Zohar? [ha-Safran]: Bibliographia Karaitica
Dear Safranim, I'm very pleased to announce the publication of: Bibliographia Karaitica An Annotated Bibliography of Karaites and Karaism by Barry Dov Walfish with Mikhail Kizilov. Leiden: Brill, 2011. Karaite Texts and Studies Volume 2 Études sur le Judaïsme Médiéval, 43 ISBN-13 (i):978 90 04 18927 0 ISBN-10:90 04 18927 0 List price: E230.00, $327.00 This is the first comprehensive bibliography on the Karaites and Karaism. Including over 8000 items in twenty languages, this bibliography, with its extensive annotations, thoroughly documents the present state of Karaite Studies and provides a solid foundation for future research. Special attention has been given to the organizational structure of the bibliography. A detailed table of contents and a complete set of indices enable the reader to easily navigate through the material. Translations of items from non-Western languages increase the bibliography's utility for the English-speaking reader. Especially noteworthy are the listings of obscure eastern European publications and the analysis of many periodical publications which enable unprecedented access to this material. It is an essential reference tool for Karaite and Jewish Studies. For more information, see: http://www.brill.nl/product_id43326. [Hasafran] e-books
Hello Hasafran friends - I am wondering if any of your libraries are purchasing and lending e-books? Can anyone who is doing this tell me how it works? Who is the vendor? What are the costs? How are the e-books conveyed to your patrons? Do they have to come into the library -- or do they download from your website? What if some patrons own a Kindle and others own a Nook -- can they both access the downloads? If the library must choose to purchase either for Nook or for Kindle, what choice have you made, and why? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. And happy new year. [ha-Safran]: cataloging synagogue library
Hello Safranim I have offered to catalog my synagogue library for inventory and searching purposes. We want a web based program. We have about 2500 volumes, and about 1/2 are seforim. I anticipate that the collection will grow. My question is two-fold: 1. I know that OPALS handles Hebrew characters. Are there any other programs that you can recommend that are no more expensive than OPALS and can handle Hebrew characters? OPALS could be more than we want or need. 2. I am also aware of Resoucemate and Libraryworld, which would be an option if we decide to romanize the Hebrew. If you have opinions or experience with either of these systems and romanizing Hebrew, please let me know. Any additional suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. A 4th grade teacher has asked me how her students can act out the parasha: Mishpatim, Exodus 21. It's a list of daily laws on how to treat others, essentially. I've been searching for stories which might illustrate the value of rules, a folktale or something, but to no avail. Have spent lots of time with the Values Finder, You be the Judge, and have only found one story in God's Garden, by Adam Fisher. Any ideas? I was looking through Rabbi Harvey to see if he told any good justice stories. I will suggest the class choose a specific rule/law from the parasha, if not. There are certainly lots of choices. I have several copies of "Jewish Currents" from 1973-1997. This is by no means a complete run, but might be of interest to fill in gaps in collections. In addition, the book, "A Ten Year Harvest, The Third Decennial Reader: A selection of short stories, poems and essays from Jewish Currents, 1966-1976," is available. I'm weeding my personal Jewish library, and will have more books to give away. Here are a couple more: "Amerikanisher Briefen-Shteler [American Letter Writer]," Alexander Harkavy, bilingual (Yiddish and English). This is a print-on-demand book from the National Yiddish Book Center. Also, "The Jackpot: A Folk-Play in Four Acts," Sholem Aleichem, translated by Weitzner and Zumoff, n.d. Re: [ha-Safran]: Column for us Luddites
As a librarian and also an author myself, I obviously support the purchase of real print-and-paper books. But as a reader and traveler, I must say that I LOVE my Kindle and have not had any of the problems that you had, Lee. I use the Kindle primarily when traveling -- now that airlines severely limit number and weight of suitcases and even charge for checked luggage, I can no longer afford to travel with a suitcase full of books. But I can bring any number of books on my Kindle and buy more in an instant, from anywhere in the world, if I run out of reading material. I read my Kindle in all types of light, indoors and out, even at the beach, with no trouble whatsoever. (I did have trouble with the first Kindle I ordered -- the print faded in sunlight -- I was told it was a glitch and they immediately sent a replacement that works fine -- maybe there was a similar problem with yours?) I also love the Kindle app on my iPhone. Again, I would not choose to read all the time on my phone! But if I am stuck waiting in the doctor's office or unexpectedly have to take my car in for service, I have access to all my Kindle books on my phone -- and it will sync to the last page read on my Kindle at home. So... I love books, but I have discovered that I love the new technology as well. Happy (secular) New Year to all.
