[ha-Safran]: SSC Librarians in particular: Really old books

2011-01-12 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

For those of you in synagogue and center libraries, what do you do
with really old books? I don't mean items that might be determined
to be rare books; I mean, books on Jewish subjects that were written
in the mid-late 1800's and early 1900's, that could be purchased
online for $5-$25, and that, when searched on Worldcat., are in most
university and Jewish research libraries.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks, and Shabbat Shalom,

[Hasafran] mp3 downloads

2011-01-12 Thread Liz Edelglass
Hello again,

As I await responses from you to me recent query about libraries
provided patron access to e-books, I would like to add a similar
questions regarding mp3 downloads of audio-books.

Our library has always had a small but well-used collection of
audio-books -- first on cassette, then on CD -- mostly used by
patrons in the car or in the gym (we are located at the JCC). Now
patrons want to listen to books ob their iPods or other mp3 players.

Are any of you purchasing audio-books direct as mp3 downloads and
making them available to your patrons? If yes, I have similar
questions as those I posed for e-books:

Who is the vendor? Cost? How do you make the downloads available to
patrons -- in the library or from your website?

Thanks again for any and all advice.

Hi, Marie:

Ken Gordon, Editor of JBooks, here.

I've got something that may may a good blog post for New York readers
of the AJL blog. If, that is, they are hankering for a night of
edifying entertainment...

On Wednesday, January 19th, 7 p.m., at the 14th Street Y,
Novelist/Musician Rick Moody and Poet/Musical Historian David Lehman
will be talkin' bout Bob Dylan.

You may recall how these two recently improvised some great things
about an amazing photo of Dylan, The Band, and Cher. If not, read
this post from the Forward's arts blog and/or click these links:

Moody

Lehman

So if this free literary, musical, Dylan-Moody-Lehman-Cher-QuickMuse
themed eventsounds good, please encourage your readers to RSVP at the
event's Facebook page.

Cheers,

Ken G.

[ha-Safran]: 150th Anniversary of US Civil War

Award-Winning Journalist's Website Memorializes 150thAnniversary of
U.S. Civil War

The 150th anniversary of the U.S. Civil War (or as some southerners
see it as 'The War of Northern Aggression') will be celebrated during 2011.

Internet surfers can now experience those days of conflict and death
by going tohttp://www.IsraeliteOnline.com.

The free website contains all weekly issues of the Cincinnati-based
Israelite newspaper (July 1859-July 1867). You will be able to
experience the war from the viewpoint of American Jewry.

The Israelite, which has been published continuously since 1854 (now
The American Israelite), was created by Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise, the
founder of Reform Judaism in America. Some historians have reported
that Wise's personal feelings leaned toward the Confederacy.

Whatever his politics were, contemporary readers can now experience
the wins and defeats of the Union and Confederate armies, the
inauguration and assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, and the
early days of Reconstruction.

Don Canaan, a resident of The Villages, is a retired U.S. Army
photographer and prize-winning TV and newspaper journalist and
editor. For a time, he reported for the American Israelite.

Canaan is also the editor of http://www.IsraelFaxx.com, a website
containing news, features, commentaries by Villages resident and
columnist Ed Ziegler, and the latest Dry Bones cartoon from Israel.
Canaan is also the power behind the throne at
http://www.TheVillagesMorsel.com, a satirical look at life in The Villages.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Old Encyclopedia Judaica and Jewish Encyclopedias

2011-01-12 Thread Bob Schrier
@Janice Colton

I just recently did a resource review (http://bit.ly/h5RMwg) on
Encyclopaedia Judaica 2007 (free online version at
http://www.bjeindy.org/encyclopedia_judaica_online). According to the author
of the 2007 preface, the authors of the first edition published for the
first time in 1972. They make no mention of the existence of a 1971 version.
So I'm not sure if your synagogue somehow received a provisional edition
before it was publicly released? My guess would be that there may have been
some confusion about the publishing years during the original communication
with the senior Rabbi; perhaps you might double check with him.

With regard to the Jewish Encyclopedia, I would send it to the geniza since
it's an old copy and it's available for free online at
http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/. Unless there are others on the listserv
who might know of some value intrinsic to the 1902 version (or perhaps
antiquity value if refurbished), I'd say it's probably not worth keeping.

Bob Schrier

Shalom Safranim,

I Was There in Color (Doc, 55 min., New Release - 2010)
Essential for any Israeli/Jewish Studies Collection

The black and white portrayal of history comes to an end in this
moving documentary. Using amazing archival footage, filmmaker Avishai
Kfir allows a peek at an earlier Israel and the true colorful nature
of history. The historic footage was shot by Fred Monosson, a
Jewish-American businessman from Brookline, MA who died in 1972.
Until this discovery, the history of Israel was captured only in
black and white. Now, for the first time, Israel's history is told in color.

This film would be perfect for your library collection. Already
purchased by Harvard University Library and Arizona State University
Library, I WAS THERE IN COLOR is both informative and touching. The
film offers the opportunity to experience a slice of the 20thcentury
in a different light. Audiences and scholars alike will respond to
the historic value and the film's strong emotional significance.

The purchase price is $300 for university libraries and $115 for
public libraries – shipping and handling is charged separately.

To learn more about the film please go to our website at

[ha-Safran]: Jewish Music Bibliography

2011-01-12 Thread Weisman, Yaffa
Solo Vocal Works on Jewish Themes: A Bibliography of Jewish Composers
is a comprehensive and annotated compendium of stage, concert, and
liturgical compositions written by Jewish composers from every known
time period and country. Kenneth Jaffe has amassed nearly 3,000
large-scale musical works for solo voice(s) on Jewish themes, written
by Jewish composers. The works include over 400 cantatas, 150
oratorios, almost 300 operas, more than 100 sacred services, 20
symphonies, and more than 350 stage works, including Yiddish theatre,
Purim and sacred plays, multi-media pieces, and musical theatre. In
addition, original song cycles and liturgical services arranged for a
modest to large complement of instruments are also included. The
works are organized by composer and subdivided by genre, and each
entry is fully annotated, detailing the title, opus, voicing and
instrumentation, text source, commission, year completed, year and
location of the premiere, the year of publication and the publisher
(if any), the location of scores, and the duration of the work. The
works are then broken down by theme, such as Biblical themes, works
for children, works of the Holocaust or Jewish suffering and
persecution, interfaith works, and wedding music. They are then
cross-referenced by voice type, arrangement, and by title. A list of
libraries and publishing houses of Jewish music rounds out this
invaluable reference.

About the Author

Kenneth Jaffe is cantor of Temple Ner Tamid in Downey, CA and has
served Jewish congregations throughout the United States as an
invested Cantor of the Reform Movement. Cantor Jaffe is available
for presentations/concerts tied in with the bibliography. See

[ha-Safran]: Temple Library

2011-01-12 Thread Lois Rosenthal
Hello,

I am writing from Temple Tifereth Israel in Winthrop MA (near Boston).

We are planning to move to a much smaller building in about 1.5
years. We will not have room for our small library of books. Most of
the books are history and social sciences. Only a small percentage
are religious volumes such as Talmud. There may be some first editions

We would like to donate them to a larger library or sell them and are
looking for some guidance in this process.

We are in the process of compiling info about the number of volumes
and more about their content.

Can you recommend anyone who can guide us? We want to find a good
home for the books.

Thank you very much for any advice you can provide.

Sincerely,

Lois Rosenthal

[ha-Safran]: The library and the Torah

2011-01-12 Thread Nancy Poole
Hello,

I have been absent a long time from the list. I have a
question. Regarding the Torah - What is the tradition or law for a
Torah remaining in a library or museum as opposed to being in a
synagogue or temple? Does it matter if it is in condition for ritual
use or not?

Thank you,

Nancy

Mazel tov twice to Anne Dublin, author and co-editor of AJL Reviews

[ha-Safran]: Library Sleepover ideas?

2011-01-12 Thread Rachel Haus
Dear Hasafranim,

I have an idea for a library sleep over (not original I know) for our
younger patrons in which they wouldn't actually sleep over, but come
in their jammies with stuffed animals etc on a Sat evening. I figured
I'd read books and then do havdalah (it gets dark pretty early in
Michigan in winter).

What have others done? I imagine I should at least read a scary book,
a funny animal book, and a sweet bedtime book. Any other suggestions,
not just for books but activities that could involve preschoolers?
What is a good way to structure the event?

Thanks,

of pleasure thrown in for good measure. We would not only like but
LOVE to visit synagogues/libraries and thank personally as many of
you as we can who have sent good wishes, advice, books and calendars
over these last 14 years. We'll be staying at the International
Youth Hostel on 883 Amsterdam Ave. We would like to treat whomsoever
wants to give us a gander/tour of their synagogue/library to a cup,
glass, or pint of whatever strikes their fancy for the honour. Or
maybe you might want to tell us about your experiences as librarians
as you accompany us on a ride on the Staten Island Ferry, or freeze
our butts off as we try to slither our way across Central Park. Or if
there is something you think we must not miss (like spitting off the
top of the Empire State for example), be sure to let us know.
