[ha-Safran]: 2011 Helen and Stan Vine Canadian Jewish Book Awards

2011-05-02 Thread Stuart Schnee
Urim Publications is proud to announce that its title An Italian
Renaissance: Choosing Life in Canada by Robert Rubinstein has been
chosen as a winner of the 2011 Helen and Stan Vine Canadian Jewish Book Awards.

More info:

An Italian Renaissance

Choosing Life In Canada

"…consistently touching, quietly inspiring, and too compelling to put down."

- Rabbi Yitz Greenberg, Founding President, Jewish Life Network

Recent decades have seen an outpouring of literature about the tragic
destruction of European Jewry during the Second World War. Yet
virtually nothing has been published about the astounding process of
healing and recovery undergone by many survivors of the Holocaust,
who had to overcome unspeakable personal trauma to build successful
new lives. The present book, written with sensitivity and eloquence
by the loving son of two such people, breaks important new ground in
describing and shedding light on this remarkable phenomenon.

The story follows Béla and Judit Rubinstein as they return from the
camps at the end of the War, their families having been murdered by
the Nazis. Seeing no future in the land of their birth, they flee
Hungary and end up trapped in a refugee camp in northern Italy,
because homeless Jews are welcome nowhere in the world. Finally, an
unforeseen opportunity arises to immigrate to Canada. The
Rubinstein's establish a new home, raise a family, and integrate into
the Toronto community. Achieving unimagined material success, they
remain warm, decent, unassuming people. Along the way, they reclaim
their ravaged ancestral faith, and this imbues their lives with
meaning and purpose.

The book's universal message of hope is sure to inspire a broad range
of readers.

About the Author:

Robert Eli Rubinstein is a businessman and Jewish communal leader
in Toronto, Canada. He and his wife Renée have four children and
eight grandchildren.

This title is available through Baker and Taylor, directly from the
distributor Lambda

[ha-Safran]: Shlemiel Crooks, the Musical

2011-05-02 Thread Anna Olswanger
I wanted to let AJL know that the family musical based on Shlemiel
Crooks (a Sidney Taylor Honor Book) turned out to be a lot of fun.

The Kaufman Center posted an excerpt from the rehearsal a couple of
days before the performance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdKBW5h-gZ0

And a nice article appeared after the musical:

http://www.memphisflyer.com/memphis/family-ties/Content?oid=2741359

The Kaufman Center has decided to produce the musical again next
year, so I hope that some of you in the New York area will be able to
attend. The kids in the audience had a great time.

Best,

Blood Will Tell: Vampires as Political Metaphors Before World War I

By Sara Libby Robinson

ISBN 978-1-934843-61-1 (cloth) $59.00 / £54.50

250 pp, April 2011

Topic Areas: Literary Criticism; European Studies

Level: Academic (Undergraduate and Graduate) and General Reader

Summary: Blood Will Tell explores the ways in which writers,
thinkers, and politicians used blood and vampire-related imagery to
express social and cultural anxieties in the decades leading up to
the First World War. Covering a wide variety of topics, including
science, citizenship, gender, and anti-Semitism, Robinson
demonstrates the ways in which rhetoric tied to blood and vampires
permeated political discourse and transcended the disparate cultures
of Great Britain, France, Germany, and the United States, forming a
cohesive political and cultural metaphor. An excellent resource,
both for students of nineteenth century cultural history and for
those interested in the historical roots of Western fascination with vampires.

Author: Sara Libby Robinson received her PhD in Comparative History
from Brandeis University. Her other publications include "Novel
Anti-Semitisms: Vampiric Reflections of the Jew in Britain,
1875-1914," which appeared in Jewish Studies in Violence: A
Collection of Essays (University Press of America, 2006).

[ha-Safran]: Bibliography Hebrew books Shanghai?

2011-05-02 Thread Jonathan Fishburn
Dear Safranim

I would appreciate anyone who can direct me to any bibliographies of
the Hebrew books printed in Shanghai especially those printed during
and immediately after WWII

I am aware of

1. Z. Harkavy - In Hasefer No 9 1961 referred to in Ency Judaica
2. Elbaum - Hamayan - 2000 Defusai Shanghai U'Shearet HaPletah

I believe someone wrote a supplement with another 20 titles or so (in
English) can't remember where I saw it. (may have been in a festschrift?)

or any bibliographies of Jewish books published in Shanghai

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Best regards

Jonathan
