[ha-Safran]: Special Invitation: RAS Digitization Committee Meeting

2011-06-14 Thread Rachel Leket-Mor
Dear colleagues,

In less than a week we are going to get together in Montreal for
another AJL annual convention. In addition to the engaging
presentations offered by RAS, I personally can't wait for the other
happenings planned for us by the local committee. I hope to see many of there!

I would like to urge you to join the Digitization Committee meeting
on Sunday afternoon. This year, a representative of JSTOR will join
us for discussing desirable digitization projects in our field.
Please come to participate in the discussion. You are also welcome to
email me in advance.

Thank you,

Rachel Leket-Mor
RAS President

I am Abigail Yasgur, a professional librarian (Master's of Science
degree in Library Information Science) and the former director of the
Jewish Library of Los Angeles.
I have always played around with the vision of an English language
library in Jerusalem and I have never fully understood or spoken with
someone who could tell me if there is an English language library in
Jerusalem that works in a similar fashion to those public libraries
in the US and offers itself as a cultural hub of activity and events:
author talks, book clubs, family story time events.
I am looking for information related to this and would like to have
some conversations with people who may find this an interesting idea
and pursuit.
Exploratory stage. I have strong experience in initiating and
developing this type of Library and I am interested in being in Jerusalem.

I will be in Israel, and specifically in Jerusalem from Friday July
29th through Monday August 1. If I need to be there Tuesday August 2
for a conversation I am happy to make myself available on that day as
well. I would like to hear from people about this and do not want to
step on toes either.
My email is abigailyas...@gmail.com

I will also post this letter to the Association of Jewish Libraries
listserv with the hope of finding out more from colleagues in Jerusalem.
Abigail

for the first time - Israel's history is told in color

I WAS THERE IN COLOR

A film by Avishai Kfir

Doc. 55 min

(already purchased by Penn University , UCLA, Yeshiva University,
Columbia University and by The JTS)

The black and white portrayal of history comes to an end in this
moving documentary. Using amazing archival footage, filmmaker Avishai
Kfir allows a peek at an earlier Israel and the true colorful nature
of history. The historic footage was shot by Fred Monosson, a
Jewish-American businessman from Brookline, MA who died in 1972.
Until this discovery, the history of Israel was captured only in
black and white. Now, for the first time, Israel's history is told in color.

This film would be perfect for your library collection. Already
purchased by Harvard University Library and Arizona State University
Library, I WAS THERE IN COLOR is both informative and touching. The
film offers the opportunity to experience a slice of the 20thcentury
in a different light. Audiences and scholars alike will respond to
the historic value and the film's strong emotional significance.

The purchase price is $300 for university libraries and $115 for
public libraries – shipping and handling is charged separately.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Currency to carry to convention?

2011-06-14 Thread Ted Koppel
In my experience, it isn't wise to bring much cash at all.

I suggest using your ATM card, at a bank in Canada.Even with
whatever fee is charged, you are much more likely to get a better
exchange rate than what you would get in the US, and you have the
safety benefit of not carrying wads of cash. That is the cash-travel
strategy I have used for years, and it seems to work well.

Ted

Re: [ha-Safran]: Currency to carry to convention?

2011-06-14 Thread Steven M. Bergson
Does anybody have advice about how
  much cash, both American and
Canadian, we should bring to the convention? (It's
  probably wise to
get some Canadian money before we go, so we have it already
  when we
get there, and don't have make a special trip to a bank.)

Usually, that's the case. I don't think it'll be worth it to do so
for next week's convention, though.

I just went to the currency exchange section of the Bank of Canada
website (http://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/exchange/daily-converter/).
I don't know what the American counterpart's website is, but Google
also has a currency converter at http://www.google.com/finance/converter .

Whichever site you use, it looks like this week the US $ is slightly
weaker than the Canadian $.

1 $US = 96 - 98 cents CDN

So, you would lose somewhere between 2 and 4 cents on the dollar by
exchanging it to Canadian funds. Minus the bank's service fee.

I would assume that with the currencies so close in value, most
vendors will accept US cash on par, rather than charging you an extra
2 cents on the dollar.

Just my 2 (Canadian) cents' worth. ;)

[ha-Safran]: Why 10 for a minyan?

2011-06-14 Thread Marga Hirsch
In this week's Torah portion, Sh'lach l'kha, Moses sends a team of 12
scouts – one representative from each of the tribes – to scope out
the land of Canaan. Only Joshua and Caleb return with a positive
report. God then asks (Numbers 14:27), How long will this evil
'assembly' provoke [the Jewish nation] to complain against Me? From
the use of the word eidah, assembly, to refer to that group of ten,
the rabbinic sages deduced that an eidah, a congregation, must
consist of at least ten people.

Next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 6:45 am, we will have two
minyanim: orthodox in room Huronie A and egalitarian in room Huronie
B. The orthodox minyan needs 10 men, and the egal minyan needs 10 men
and women in order for people to say all the morning prayers and read
from the Torah, and in order for mouners to say Kaddish.

Please consider participating in a minyan one morning of convention.
If there are ten participants for each minyan at 6:45 am, both
services can begin promptly and end in time for a leisurely breakfast.

Thanks in advance,

Marga
