My mother's residence has a quite good library. They are reviewing
the collection, and there may be books to give to a synagogue or
central library. The place is Westchester Meadows in North White
Plains/Valhalla, NY.

If anyone is interested, please contact Ed Richman at gothic...@optonline.net.

[ha-Safran]: Morris Seminar Deadline Extended

2011-09-16 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
FYI,

***

If you're interested in book and media evaluation but have limited
experiences than this seminar is for YOU! ALSC is seeking
applications for its third biennial Morris Seminar: Book Evaluation
Training, to be held on Friday, January 20, 2012, prior to the ALA
Midwinter Meeting in Dallas, Texas. This invitational seminar
supports and honors William C. Morris' dedication to connecting
librarians and children with excellent children's books.

During this day-long event, members with limited experience are
trained and mentored in evaluation techniques by former ALSC award
committee members. The seminar will result in new and emerging
leaders for future ALSC evaluation committees.

The Morris Endowment supports those selected to attend the training
seminar by offering the seminar at no charge to the attendee. This
includes all materials, breakfast, lunch, and afternoon break on
Friday. To help defray additional costs for hotel and other
expenses, a $200 stipend for each attendee will be provided by the endowment.

Information and the application are available on the ALSC Web site
at:http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/confevents/morris_events/seminarinfo.cfm

The application deadline has been extended to September 30,
2011. Attendees selected to attend the seminar will be notified
during the first week of November.

Please contact Jenny Najduch, ALSC Program Officer, with questions

[ha-Safran]: Children's Literature Comprehensive Database REMINDER

2011-09-16 Thread Kolodney
Dear AJL members!

Please note that I got only two filled in forms so far. Some other
members were interested but did not send their forms.

Please be reminded that this benefit is for AJL members ONLY!

Uri

Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) - http://www.clcd.com/

As some of you know, the AJL and CLCD have contracted to give free
access to those AJL members whose library budget is less than $15,000
a year. In return, AJL Reviews supply the CLCD with the child & teen
reviews which are posted on the database with no cost to CLCD or to
AJL. Our members with a limited budget benefit from this agreement
and the AJL as an organization benefits from the online visibility
and free publicity.

As the liaison between the AJL and CLCD, it was brought to my
attention that some members are abusing this free benefit by sharing
their password with others. It is very well understood that one could
connect from two different machines – one at the office and the other
one at home. Other than this situation, your login information should
not be shared, and our agreement with CLCD should be fully respected.

I thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

As a reminder, those of you who are interested in getting this
benefit, please contact me directly at
general-edi...@jewishlibraries.org . You would need to fill in a form
and declare that you are eligible to get this benefit according to
the budgetary limit mentioned above.

Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions.

[ha-Safran]: Machzorim to give away

2011-09-16 Thread Chaya Wiesman
Dear Safranim,

We have some machzorim that we are weeding from our collection due to
lack of space, and we would like to find a home for them.

They include: 5 volumes of "Service of the Synagogue" (Sukkot,
Pesach, Yom Kippur, Shavu'ot, and Rosh haShannah/Yom Kippur).

They are Hebrew/English.

Aside from library markings, they are in good condition. We would
give them to anyone who would be willing to pay postage.

In future, we may have other Judaica to give away.

[ha-Safran]: Happy Rosh Hashana!

2011-09-16 Thread agendler
Dear members of Hasafran,

Every year around Rosh Hashanah we try to give customers of eBookshuk
some gift.

This year, we're glad to be able to extend this courtesy to you as
well with a very special gift: downloadable, interactive,
Hebrew-English Tanakh.

That is right. Visit now www.ebookshuk.com and download your very
own, unencrypted version of this great title... FREE (reg. $18)!

Download it yourself and let your friends, colleagues, students, and
congregants know about it as well. Just like you, they will also get
$10 store credit with eBookshuk when they do it.

Because of the way it was prepared, this edition of Tanakh can be
used on virtually any computing device, including iPad, iPhone/iPod,
Kindle, Nook, Sony, and other tablets and smart phones.

Furthermore, it has been set so you can add comments to it using only
freely available Adobe Reader, i.e. no need for Acrobat.

Regardless how you use it, what you get here is a fully vocalized,
contillated edition of traditional Massoretic text set side-by-side
with classic JPS English translation.

While there are many Hebrew Bible versions available on the Internet,
I am not aware of any downloadable edition of the same quality as ours.

Enjoy it... and have a happy, health and peaceful New 5772 Year...
you and your whole mishpuchah!

Yours,

Alex

[ha-Safran]: Databases of educational materials

2011-09-16 Thread Rachel Leket-Mor
Shalom all,

I would like to bring to your attention the availability of two free
databases of educational materials, some of them pertaining to Jewish Studies.

  1. JSTOR announced that it is making journal content published
prior to 1923 in the United States and prior to 1870 elsewhere freely
available to anyone, anywhere in the world. This "Early Journal
Content" covers nearly 500,000 articles from more than 200 journals
in many disciplines. See announcement:
http://about.jstor.org/participate-jstor/individuals/early-journal-content.

2. Project MAOR, the Israeli counterpart of MERLOT
  was established by the
Israeli Internet Association,
the Israeli Ministry of Education and the Inter-University
Computation Center. It is "a national repository of information
(meta-data) on online
learning objects. Every day, educational and academic
institutions - universities, colleges, schools and other
organizations - generate new content
to support education, teaching and learning, research and
evaluation." Project MAOR offers advanced search options, and
materials are available in
 different disciplines, including Jewish Studies
 .

Best wishes,
Rachel
