New series offers diverse perspectives on leading an ethical Jewish
life: Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices
Is my weight anybody's business but my own? Should I pay a nanny
under the table or send my child to daycare? Can a tattoo express my
Jewish identity? How much money is enough?
Jews of different ages and life experiences weigh in on these and
other ethical dilemmas in this new series from The Jewish Publication
Society. Case studies, source texts from Jewish tradition, and
original essays present a range of opinions on pressing
questions. Hear what doctors, rabbis, parents, athletes, executives,
philosophers, artists, government officials, social justice activists
and others think about how we make choices about our bodies and about
money. Intended to promote dialogue, challenge assumptions, and
reflect the reality of Jewish life today, Jewish Choices, Jewish
Voices is an invaluable resource for educators and those who want to
explore the range of informed Jewish responses to controversial questions.
Forthcoming volumes will include Power; War and National Security,
Sexual Relations and Intimacy, Social Responsibility, and more.

[ha-Safran]: New from JPS: String the Pearls

Stringing the Pearls:
How to Read the Weekly Torah Portion
James S. Diamond
ISBN: 978-0-8276-0868-9
Deepen your understanding of the weekly Torah portion with this
smart, accessible guide…
Reading the Torah, also known as the Five Books of Moses, is a
never-ending journey. Each year Jews around the world complete the
weekly cycle of Torah and then immediately begin again. How can
modern readers grapple with the Torah year after year and continue to
find the process rewarding and relevant?
Stringing the Pearls is unique in that it is a how-to guide.
Rather than offering his own analysis of each of the Torah's weekly
readings, Diamond presents readers with different lenses, both
traditional and contemporary, so that they can make their own
connections to the text. Stringing the Pearls is a wonderful tool for
anyone preparing a d'var Torah, participating in a Bible study group,
or simply seeking to be a more confident and active readers of Torah.
James S. Diamond teaches in the Program in Judaic Studies at
Princeton University. Diamond was ordained by the Jewish Theological
Seminary and holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Indiana
University in Bloomington. Adult Jewish learning has been a focal
point throughout Diamond's career. In recent years, he has taught the
Tanakh course in the Me'ah program, a two-year intensive adult Jewish
learning program that is sponsored by the Hebrew College of Boston.
Stringing the Pearls grew out of this course.
Praise for Stringing the Pearls:

I was thrilled with Jim Diamond's work on how to get the most out of
the weekly Torah portion. I learned a great deal from it.

[ha-Safran]: The JPS Commentary on the Haggadah

The JPS Commentary on the Haggadah
Joseph Tabory
978-0-8276-0858-0
JPS Commentary on the Haggadah
Historical Introduction, Translation, and Commentary by Joseph Tabory
Foreword by David Stern
The haggadah is the heart of the Passover Seder, one of the most
enduring and powerful of all Jewish rituals. In this new volume in
the acclaimed JPS Commentary collection, Joseph Tabory, one of the
world's leading authorities on the history of the haggadah, traces
the development of the seder and the haggadah through the ages.
The JPS Commentary on the Haggadah features an extended introduction
by Tabory, the classic Hebrew haggadah text side by side with its
English translation, and Tabory's clear and insightful
critical-historical commentary. A rich work of scholarship and a
successor to Goldschmidt's 1969 The Passover Haggadah, The JPS
Commentary on the Haggadah is an excellent resource for scholars and
seder-leaders.
Tabory's commentary will certainly remain the definitive work on the
haggadah for many years to come. — David Stern, Ruth Meltzer
Professor of Classical Hebrew, University of Pennsylvania
Joseph Tabory is a professor of Talmud at Bar-Ilan University in
Israel. He is also an ordained Orthodox rabbi. He received his Ph.D.
from Bar Ilan University in 1978. He has written many articles on
various fields of rabbinic literature and is the author of two major
volumes in Hebrew, one on the history of Jewish festivals (The
Passover Haggadah, upon which the JPS Commentary on the Haggadah is
based) and one on the history of the Passover seder.

[ha-Safran]: For the Love of God and People

2008-01-09 Thread Arielle Levites
For the Love of God and People:
A Philosophy of Jewish Law
Elliot N. Dorff
ISBN: 978-0-8276-0840-5
Every generation of Jews in every denomination of Judaism finds
itself facing complex and pressing legal questions. The status of
same-sex unions and the plight of the agunah (a woman who cannot
obtain a divorce) are just two of a myriad of thorny questions that
Jewish legal experts grapple with today. These are not esoteric
problems but issues with a profound impact on the daily happiness of
countless people. How do the rabbis who must grapple with these
questions reach a conclusion? What informs their decisions and their
approach to Jewish law?
In For the Love of God and People acclaimed writer and legal expert
Elliot Dorff tackles these and other tricky questions in an
intelligent and accessible guide to the philosophy behind Jewish
law. What motivates modern Jews to follow Jewish law? How does
Jewish law strike the balance between continuity and change? On what
grounds and under what circumstances do human beings have the
authority to interpret or even change God's laws? Dorff also compares
Jewish law to other legal systems, including the U.S. system.
For the Love of God and Man is an important book for anyone looking
for a better understanding of the Jewish legal system and its role in
our increasingly complicated modern world.
Elliot N. Dorff, a Conservative rabbi, is Rector and Sol and Anne
Dorff Distinguished Service Professor in Philosophy at the American
Jewish University (formerly University of Judaism) He was ordained by
the Jewish Theological Seminary and earned his Ph.D. in philosophy
from Columbia University with a dissertation in moral theory. He has
written over 150 articles on Jewish thought, law, and ethics, and
many books, including three JPS volumes -- Matters of Life and Death,
To Do the Right and the Good, and Love Your Neighbor and Yourself.
Dorff is co-editor of Etz Hayim: Torah and Commentary and of the
forthcoming JPS series Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices.
Praise for For the Love of God and People: A Philosophy of Jewish Law
by Elliot N. Dorff
Elliot Dorff has long been famed as a foremost student of Jewish
thought and Jewish law, and his legal writings and decisions have
gained international acclaim and attention. In For the Love of God
and People, he offers a comprehensive vision of his own understanding
of the Jewish legal system and rare insight into the philosophy that
informs his own legal opinions. This book will be a treasure for
scholars and thoughtful laypeople alike.

Who's Who in the Jewish Bible was originally self-published by the
author in very limited quantities. This is the first time it's been made
available to a wider audience.
It's a wonderful resource for both scholars and the general reader (I
used it to help pick out my son's name).
I'm happy to answer any questions about this or other JPS titles.

Who’s Who in the Jewish Bible

David Mandel

ISBN: 978-0-8276-0863-4

New Bible Encyclopedia Catalogues 3,000 Characters from A to Z

Who's Who in the Jewish Bible is much more than a standard reference
book. From Aaron to Zurishaddai, this unique volume tells the stories
of each of the 3,000 people mentioned in the Jewish Bible. Whether
famous or not so famous, every character is here: patriarchs and
prophets, warriors and peace-makers, kings and queens, holy men and
sinners, heroes and villains. As the most comprehensive source on the
subject, this book is a fascinating, informative, and indispensable
tool for general readers and scholars, students and educators alike.

With biographical entries arranged in a convenient A to Z format,
Who’s Who in the Jewish Bible details each character’s life as a
single, continuous story, in many cases drawing together information
that is scattered over large stretches of biblical text. Entries are
ordered and numbered according to the person’s first appearance in
the Bible and accompany commentary on the origin and meaning of the
character’s name as well as estimated dates when he/she lived. All
entries correspond to the Jewish Publication Society’s acclaimed translation.

Unlike other biblical anthologies, Who’s Who in the Jewish Bible
stands alone in using only the Bible as its basis – without
extra-biblical stories, theological interpretations, or other
secondary source additions. Flip through its pages for a quick
reference check or read it straight through, and discover the
fascinating stories of men and women whose lives, teachings, and
sayings continue to influence and impact our lives.

David Mandel is the founder of Computronic Corporation, an Israeli
software development company that specializes in biblical software.
He was born in Lima, Peru, where his parents fled during the
Holocaust, and moved to Israel in 1970 after studying Bible at the
University of Pennsylvania. Mandel’s years of extensive research,
computer savvy, and love for the Bible have contributed to this
monumental work.

ISBN: 978-0-8276-0872-6

Now Available in Paperback for the First Time: Rashi’s Commentary on Psalms

In 2004, Mayer Gruber’s landmark Rashi’s Commentary on Psalms made
one of the 11th century scholar’s most important works accessible to
a larger audience for the first time. The JPS paperback edition of
this exceptional volume includes Rashi’s complete original Hebrew
text and acclaimed linguist Mayer Gruber’s contemporary English
translation and supercommentary.

Fully annotated by Gruber, Rashi’s Commentary on Psalms places Rashi,
the most influential Hebrew biblical commentator of all time, in the
larger context of biblical exegesis. Gruber identifies Rashi’s
sources, pinpoints the exegetical questions to which Rashi responds,
defines the nuances of Rashi’s terminology, and guides the reader to
use the English translation as a tool to access the original Hebrew
text. Gruber’s extensive introduction takes a critical look at Rashi
and his enduring legacy.

[ha-Safran]: New from JPS: Sephardic folktales for all ages

2007-09-11 Thread Arielle Levites
Stories from the past for today’s Jewish families

The Power of Song

And Other Sephardic Tales

Selected and Retold by Rita Roth

Designed and illustrated by Alexa Ginsburg

Folktales are told not just to entertain but to transmit values. This
delightful collection of Jewish tales from the Mediterranean contains
stories the whole family can share together!

Meet Hanina, the daughter of a Jewish tailor who cures a sultan’s
only child by

taming a lioness to get her milk. Or Nahum Bilbas, the brave
rabbi-in-training who dares

to confront the great warrior El Cid in order to secure peace for the
Jews of Valencia. These and countless other colorful characters will
entertain and intrigue you in this collection that contains lessons,
truths, surprises, and happy endings.

When the Jews fled the Iberian Peninsula in 1492 and scattered all
over Europe, North

Africa, and the Middle East, they took with them the folktales that
were an integral part of their unique heritage. As they settled into
their new homelands, they borrowed many of the literary devices and
motifs from their adopted countries, adding unique flavor to the
traditional Jewish story.

Each story in The Power of Song is accompanied by commentary on its
origin and meaning, as well as definitions of the foreign words that
appear in the tale. The author’s introduction gives special insight
into the history of Jewish folktales and specifically those of the
Sephardic Jews.

Rita Roth received her master’s degree in teaching from Webster
University in St. Louis, Missouri and her doctorate in education from
Washington University. She was an associate professor in the
Education Department at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri
for twenty years.

Alexa Ginsburg holds a BFA from Cooper Union College. She is a

is also the illustrator of Wise and Not So Wise: Ten Tales from the

[ha-Safran]: Two new titles available from JPS

2007-05-22 Thread Arielle Levites
Inventing Jewish Ritual

Vanessa L. Ochs

ISBN: 978-0-8276-0834-4

Price: $25

Binding: Paper, 300 pages, 6”x9”

It wasn’t long ago that naming ceremonies for newborn girls and Rosh
Chodesh groups for women were considered new and challenging rituals.
Even square matzah was initially looked on with skepticism. Today Car
Mitzvahs and Torah Yoga are becoming increasingly common. How do we
create new ritual? What makes it Jewish? What makes it endure?

In Inventing Jewish Ritual, Vanessa Ochs invites us to see new Jewish
rituals through the eyes of an anthropologist. What is involved in
creating ritual? Who has the authority to make these changes? Are
these new rituals authentic? Ochs uncovers the roots of contemporary
rituals, including Miriam’s tambourines, Holocaust Torahs, and
wedding booklets, and traces their surprising evolution.

Explore the innovation and creativity in contemporary Jewish practice
and gain insight into how to make your own Jewish practice more
meaningful through renewing, reshaping, and even creating new rituals.

Vanessa L. Ochs is an associate professor of religious studies at the
University of Virginia, Charlottesville. She is the author of Sarah
Laughed, The Jewish Dream Book (with Elizabeth Ochs), Words on Fire,
and Safe and Sound. For her writing she was awarded a National
Endowment for the Arts fellowship.

Folktales of the Jews, Volume 2
Tales from Eastern Europe
Edited by Dan Ben-Amos

Dov Noy, Consulting Editor

Lenn Schramm, Tales Translator

Price: $75.00
Binding: 6 x 9, 550 pages, Hardcover
ISBN: 978-0-8276-0830-6

The second volume in a literary landmark Folktales from Eastern
Europe presents 71 tales from Ashkenasic culture in the most
important collection of Jewish folktales ever published. It is the
second volume in Folktales of the Jews, the five-volume series to be
released over the next several years, in the tradition of Louis
Ginzberg's classic, Legends of the Jews.

The tales here and the others in this series have been selected from
the Israel Folktale Archives at The University of Haifa, Israel
(IFA), a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely
unavailable to the entire world until now.

Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected more
than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost stories
shared by their families from around the world. The tales come from
the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are
representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially
rich in Jewish content and context.

Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains
the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its
similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive
scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the
Ashkenasic culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of
the areas covered, illustrations,
biographies of the collectors and narrators, tale type and motif
indexes, a subject index, and a comprehensive bibliography.

Until the establishment of the IFA, we had had only limited access to
the wide range of Jewish folk narratives. Even in Israel, the
gathering place of the most wide-ranging cross-section of world
Jewry, these folktales have remained largely unknown. Many of the
communities no longer exist as cohesive societies in their
representative lands; the Holocaust, migration, and changes in living
styles have made the continuation of these tales impossible. This
volume and the others to come will be monuments to a rich but
vanishing oral tradition.

About the author

Dan Ben-Amos, Ph.D., is a professor of folklore at the University of
Pennsylvania, the general editor of Indiana University Press's
Folklore Series, and the senior editor of Mimekor Yisrael: Folktales
of Israel.

Dov Noy, Ph.D., is the Max and Margarethe Grunwald Professor of
Hebrew Literature at the Hebrew University, the director of the
Hebrew University Folklore Center, a professor of Yiddish folklore at
Bar Ilan University, the 1988 recipient of the Jerusalem Prize, and
the founder of the Israel Folktale Archives.

[ha-Safran]: Book Recommendation Needed

2007-05-03 Thread Arielle Levites
Dear Safranim,

I’m on a committee to select a book to be read by the entire Jewish
community of my city (akin to many city’s One Book program). I would
appreciate any recommendations you have for books that you think
would be appropriate for a diverse Jewish community.

Some of our thoughts on criteria include:

-Offers insight, a taste of, or opinion of one or more Jewish values/concepts

-Is enjoyable/readable

-Conducive to the development of engaging activities in a variety of
modalities (such as films, workshops, lectures, debates,
internet/computer generated education, field trips)

-Conducive to the selection of companion books for teens and youth

-Offers collaborative opportunities with other agencies and
organizations (secular or otherwise)

-Available in paperback (bonus: if available in large print, ‘book on
tape’, and film version)

-Is readily available and inexpensive to buy (on line and in book stores)

-Author is willing to participate

If you reply to me off list with your suggestions I’ll put together
all the responses and share them with the group.

Thanks!

Mara W. Cohen Ioannides

Ages 10 and up

An Extraordinary Time, an Extraordinary Friendship…

A Shout in the Sunshine by Mara W. Cohen Ioannides

In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled the Jewish
community of Spain. Sultan Beyazit invited these refugees to
Thessaloniki, a community already home to a diverse Jewish population
with deep roots in Greece. A Shout in the Sunshine is the story of a
remarkable friendship set against the background of this turbulent
time in Jewish history.

Miguel and David are both Jewish, but the commonalities seem to end
there. One is a refugee from post-Inquisition Spain, the other the
son of a wealthy Greek fabric merchant. But beyond the obvious
differences of rich and poor, Spanish and Greek, are two boys that
share a special connection.

A Shout in the Sunshine is a tribute to the vitality of a once
thriving Jewish community and a testament to the power of friendship.

Mara W. Cohen Ioannides is a lecturer in English composition and
Jewish studies at Missouri State University. This is her first novel.

Folktales of the Jews
Volume 1, Tales from the Sephardic Dispersion
Edited by Dan Ben-Amos
Dov Noy, Consulting Editor
Lenn Schramm, Translator

The first volume in a new literary landmark, Tales from the Sephardic
Dispersion begins the most important collection of Jewish folktales
ever published. It is the first volume in Folktales of the Jews, the
five-volume series to be released over the next several years, in the
tradition of Louis Ginzberg's classic, Legends of the Jews.

The 71 tales here and the others in this series have been selected
from the Israel Folktale Archives (IFA), a treasure house of Jewish
lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until
now. Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected
more than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost
stories shared by their families from around the world. The tales
come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world
and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs,
especially rich in Jewish content and context.

Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains
the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its
similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive
scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the
Sephardic culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of
the areas covered, illustrations, biographies of the collectors and
narrators, tale type and motif indexes, a subject index, and a
comprehensive bibliography.

The Jewish Book of Days: A Companion for All Seasons
By Jill Hammer

Throughout the ages, Jews have connected legends to particular days
of the Hebrew calendar. Abraham's birth, the death of Rachel, and the
creation of light are all tales that are linked to a specific day and
season. The Jewish Book of Days invites readers to experience the
connection between sacred story and nature's rhythms, through
readings designed for each and every day of the year. These daily
readings offer an opportunity to live in tune with the wisdom of the
past while learning new truths about the times we live in today.

Each entry has three components: a biblical quote for the day; a
midrash on the biblical quote or a Jewish tradition related to that
day; and commentary relating the text to the cycles of the year. The
author includes an introduction that analyzes the different months
and seasons of the Hebrew calendar and explains the textual sources
used throughout. Appendixes provide additional material for leap
years, equinoxes, and solstices. A section on seasonal meditations
offers a new way to approach the divine every day.

Price: $30.00
Binding: 6 3/4 x 7 1/2, 400 pages,
Hardcover
ISBN: 0827608314

Dictionary of Jewish Words: A JPS Guide
By Joyce Eisenberg, Ellen Scolnic

This JPS bestseller is now updated and expanded, with new words,
names, terms, and expressions

Organized in an A to Z format for easy reference, The JPS Dictionary
of Jewish Words contains 1,200 entries derived from Yiddish, Hebrew,
Aramaic, and English. The entries include words for and associated
with Jewish holidays and life-cycle events, culture, history, the
Bible and other sacred texts, worship, and more.

Each entry has a pronunciation guide and is cross-referenced to other
related terms. The introduction is an excellent primer on the history
of Jewish words, their transliteration, and pronunciation. The
indexes at the back, arranged by categories, help readers easily find
the words they want, even when they don't know the exact spelling.

[ha-Safran]: David and Max: A Classic Updated

2006-08-06 Thread Arielle Levites
A National Jewish Book Award for Children's Literature Finalist

David and Max

Gary Provost and Gail Provost Stockwell

Twelve-year-old David is too short to make the basketball team so he
takes his basketball along on a family vacation hoping to improve his
skills. But a startling mystery soon eclipses ball practice.

A routine trip for ice cream with his grandfather, Max, introduces
David to long hidden family secrets. Are his grandfather's eyes
playing tricks on him or have they found a friend Max thought died
long ago in the Holocaust? Slowly, as David and Max search for the
elusive B.B., David learns about Max's terrible past. As he comes to
terms with his grandfather's disturbing memories and declining
health, David grows to understand more about the meaning of honesty -
and about himself.

Now this delightful classic about the remarkable relationship between
a boy and his grandfather is available in a new edition, updated to
appeal to the next generation of readers.

Gail Provost Stockwell and her late husband, Gary Provost, are the
authors of three award-winning novels for children including Good If
It Goes, winner of the National Jewish Book Award. They created and
have taught at nationwide writing seminars and founded the Writers

RE: [ha-Safran]: Author Recommendation

2005-08-12 Thread Arielle Levites
I suggest contacting Penina Adelman. Her latest book is Praise Her
Works; Conversation with Biblical Women. She is Scholar-in-Residence at
the Women's Studies Research Center at Brandeis University
Praise Her Works examines the live of 23 Biblical women from the
well-known (Eve, Miriam) to the barely named (Noah's wife, Hatzlelponi).

The book was born when Penina Adelman was searching for a ritual to mark
her daughter's bat-mitzvah. She learned about a 13th century Yemenite
text that matches each verse of Eshet Chayil (Woman of Valor) with a
woman from the Bible.
I would be happy to put you in touch with her.

Try:
The Zionist Idea edited by Arthur Hertzberg.
It is a paperback collection of the writings of the leading thinkers in
the Zionist movement: Herzel, Kaplan, Jabotinsky, Buber, Ben-Gurion -
they are all included in this classic. The roots of many issues in
modern Israeli society are all explored in this collection.

For kids I highly recommend Zayda Was a Cowboy. The story of a young man
who travels from the shtetl to Texas, Zayda is an engaging adventure
that is a quick read and lends itself to discussion. Ages 8 and up.
