[ha-Safran]: New from JPS: String the Pearls
Stringing the Pearls: How to Read the Weekly Torah Portion James S. Diamond ISBN: 978-0-8276-0868-9 Deepen your understanding of the weekly Torah portion with this smart, accessible guide Reading the Torah, also known as the Five Books of Moses, is a never-ending journey. Each year Jews around the world complete the weekly cycle of Torah and then immediately begin again. How can modern readers grapple with the Torah year after year and continue to find the process rewarding and relevant? Stringing the Pearls is unique in that it is a how-to guide. Rather than offering his own analysis of each of the Torah's weekly readings, Diamond presents readers with different lenses, both traditional and contemporary, so that they can make their own connections to the text. Stringing the Pearls is a wonderful tool for anyone preparing a d'var Torah, participating in a Bible study group, or simply seeking to be a more confident and active readers of Torah. James S. Diamond teaches in the Program in Judaic Studies at Princeton University. Diamond was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary and holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Indiana University in Bloomington. Adult Jewish learning has been a focal point throughout Diamond's career. In recent years, he has taught the Tanakh course in the Me'ah program, a two-year intensive adult Jewish learning program that is sponsored by the Hebrew College of Boston. Stringing the Pearls grew out of this course. Praise for Stringing the Pearls: I was thrilled with Jim Diamond's work on how to get the most out of the weekly Torah portion. I learned a great deal from it. - Edgar M. [ha-Safran]: For the Love of God and People
For the Love of God and People: A Philosophy of Jewish Law Elliot N. Dorff ISBN: 978-0-8276-0840-5 Every generation of Jews in every denomination of Judaism finds itself facing complex and pressing legal questions. What informs their decisions and their approach to Jewish law? In For the Love of God and People acclaimed writer and legal expert Elliot Dorff tackles these and other tricky questions in an intelligent and accessible guide to the philosophy behind Jewish law. What motivates modern Jews to follow Jewish law? How does Jewish law strike the balance between continuity and change? On what grounds and under what circumstances do human beings have the authority to interpret or even change God's laws? RE: [ha-Safran]: New from JPS: Who's Who in the Jewish Bible
Who's Who in the Jewish Bible was originally self-published by the author in very limited quantities. This is the first time it's been made available to a wider audience. It's a wonderful resource for both scholars and the general reader (I used it to help pick out my son's name). I'm happy to answer any questions about this or other JPS titles. [ha-Safran]: New from JPS: Sephardic folktales for all ages
Stories from the past for todays Jewish families The Power of Song And Other Sephardic Tales Selected and Retold by Rita Roth Designed and illustrated by Alexa Ginsburg Folktales are told not just to entertain but to transmit values. This delightful collection of Jewish tales from the Mediterranean contains stories the whole family can share together! Meet Hanina, the daughter of a Jewish tailor who cures a sultans only child by taming a lioness to get her milk. Or Nahum Bilbas, the brave rabbi-in-training who dares to confront the great warrior El Cid in order to secure peace for the Jews of Valencia. These and countless other colorful characters will entertain and intrigue you in this collection that contains lessons, truths, surprises, and happy endings. When the Jews fled the Iberian Peninsula in 1492 and scattered all over Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, they took with them the folktales that were an integral part of their unique heritage. As they settled into their new homelands, they borrowed many of the literary devices and motifs from their adopted countries, adding unique flavor to the traditional Jewish story. Each story in The Power of Song is accompanied by commentary on its origin and meaning, as well as definitions of the foreign words that appear in the tale. The authors introduction gives special insight into the history of Jewish folktales and specifically those of the Sephardic Jews. Rita Roth received her masters degree in teaching from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri and her doctorate in education from Washington University. She was an associate professor in the Education Department at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri for twenty years. Alexa Ginsburg holds a BFA from Cooper Union College. [ha-Safran]: Two new titles available from JPS
Inventing Jewish Ritual Vanessa L. Ochs ISBN: 978-0-8276-0834-4 Price: $25 Binding: Paper, 300 pages, 6x9 It wasnt long ago that naming ceremonies for newborn girls and Rosh Chodesh groups for women were considered new and challenging rituals. Even square matzah was initially looked on with skepticism. Today Car Mitzvahs and Torah Yoga are becoming increasingly common. How do we create new ritual? What makes it Jewish? What makes it endure? In Inventing Jewish Ritual, Vanessa Ochs invites us to see new Jewish rituals through the eyes of an anthropologist. What is involved in creating ritual? Who has the authority to make these changes? Are these new rituals authentic? Ochs uncovers the roots of contemporary rituals, including Miriams tambourines, Holocaust Torahs, and wedding booklets, and traces their surprising evolution. Explore the innovation and creativity in contemporary Jewish practice and gain insight into how to make your own Jewish practice more meaningful through renewing, reshaping, and even creating new rituals. Vanessa L. Ochs is an associate professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. She is the author of Sarah Laughed, The Jewish Dream Book (with Elizabeth Ochs), Words on Fire, and Safe and Sound. For her writing she was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. Folktales of the Jews, Volume 2 Tales from Eastern Europe Edited by Dan Ben-Amos Dov Noy, Consulting Editor Lenn Schramm, Tales Translator Price: $75.00 Binding: 6 x 9, 550 pages, Hardcover ISBN: 978-0-8276-0830-6 The second volume in a literary landmark Folktales from Eastern Europe presents 71 tales from Ashkenasic culture in the most important collection of Jewish folktales ever published. It is the second volume in Folktales of the Jews, the five-volume series to be released over the next several years, in the tradition of Louis Ginzberg's classic, Legends of the Jews. The tales here and the others in this series have been selected from the Israel Folktale Archives at The University of Haifa, Israel (IFA), a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until now. Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected more than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost stories shared by their families from around the world. The tales come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially rich in Jewish content and context. Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the Ashkenasic culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of the areas covered, illustrations, biographies of the collectors and narrators, tale type and motif indexes, a subject index, and a comprehensive bibliography. Until the establishment of the IFA, we had had only limited access to the wide range of Jewish folk narratives. Even in Israel, the gathering place of the most wide-ranging cross-section of world Jewry, these folktales have remained largely unknown. Many of the communities no longer exist as cohesive societies in their representative lands; the Holocaust, migration, and changes in living styles have made the continuation of these tales impossible. This volume and the others to come will be monuments to a rich but vanishing oral tradition. About the author Dan Ben-Amos, Ph.D., is a professor of folklore at the University of Pennsylvania, the general editor of Indiana University Press's Folklore Series, and the senior editor of Mimekor Yisrael: Folktales of Israel. Dov Noy, Ph.D., is the Max and Margarethe Grunwald Professor of Hebrew Literature at the Hebrew University, the director of the Hebrew University Folklore Center, a professor of Yiddish folklore at Bar Ilan University, the 1988 recipient of the Jerusalem Prize, and the founder of the Israel Folktale Archives. Cohen Ioannides In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled the Jewish community of Spain. Sultan Beyazit invited these refugees to Thessaloniki, a community already home to a diverse Jewish population with deep roots in Greece. A Shout in the Sunshine is the story of a remarkable friendship set against the background of this turbulent time in Jewish history. Miguel and David are both Jewish, but the commonalities seem to end there. One is a refugee from post-Inquisition Spain, the other the son of a wealthy Greek fabric merchant. But beyond the obvious differences of rich and poor, Spanish and Greek, are two boys that share a special connection. The 71 tales here and the others in this series have been selected from the Israel Folktale Archives (IFA), a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until now. The tales come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially rich in Jewish content and context. These daily readings offer an opportunity to live in tune with the wisdom of the past while learning new truths about the times we live in today. Each entry has three components: a biblical quote for the day; a midrash on the biblical quote or a Jewish tradition related to that day; and commentary relating the text to the cycles of the year. The author includes an introduction that analyzes the different months and seasons of the Hebrew calendar and explains the textual sources used throughout. Appendixes provide additional material for leap years, equinoxes, and solstices. A section on seasonal meditations offers a new way to approach the divine every day. RE: [ha-Safran]: Author Recommendation
I suggest contacting Penina Adelman. Her latest book is Praise Her Works; Conversation with Biblical Women. She is Scholar-in-Residence at the Women's Studies Research Center at Brandeis University Praise Her Works examines the live of 23 Biblical women from the well-known (Eve, Miriam) to the barely named (Noah's wife, Hatzlelponi). The book was born when Penina Adelman was searching for a ritual to mark her daughter's bat-mitzvah. She learned about a 13th century Yemenite text that matches each verse of Eshet Chayil (Woman of Valor) with a woman from the Bible. I would be happy to put you in touch with her. RE: [ha-Safran]: Book recommendation
Try: The Zionist Idea edited by Arthur Hertzberg. It is a paperback collection of the writings of the leading thinkers in the Zionist movement: Herzel, Kaplan, Jabotinsky, Buber, Ben-Gurion - they are all included in this classic. The roots of many issues in modern Israeli society are all explored in this collection. For kids I highly recommend Zayda Was a Cowboy. The story of a young man who travels from the shtetl to Texas, Zayda is an engaging adventure that is a quick read and lends itself to discussion. Ages 8 and up.
