[ha-Safran]: Video suggestion needed for Intro to Judaism
Hi all, I'm hoping that the wisdom and experience of the crowd can help me out. A local Christian seminary librarian recently wrote to me saying that she wanted to add a short (1 hour or so) video about Judaism to her collection. She specifically wants Jewish theology and customs, _not_ history. I've searched on Amazon, Netflix, some Googling, but haven't found any Intro to Judaism videos. Does anyone have any suggestions? HUC-LA is located near downtown Los Angeles. [ha-Safran]: AJL Convention blog
Date: Wed, 31 May 2006 13:13:36 -0400 Hi all, This year AJL will be experimenting with a fun new venture - a convention blog! Thanks to Ann Abrams and Heidi Estrin, we safranim will have another avenue of communication and collaboration. For those of you not familiar with blogs - this will be an online bulletin board and discussion forum for anyone interested in the convention (whether attending or not) Check it out at: http://jewishlibrariesconf06.blogspot.com/ I'll be posting my impressions of meetings, speakers, networking, food, touring and anything else convention-related that comes up. If you are not able to attend the convention, this should give you a taste of what it's like and an opportunity to chime in on the discussions. If you are attending, I invite you to participate by: 1. being a 'regular' poster (e-mail me and I'll set you up) 2. being a one-time or occasion poster (e-mail a message to me and I'll post it for you) 3. commenting on any of the posts, give different perspectives, start discussions! (just click on the comment link on the blog and enter your comments) To get us started - I would love it if the Boston locals or Boston fans would give ideas to those of us coming into the area on fun places to tour, eat, hike, shop etc. If you would like to get the blog in the comfort of your own e-mail system - you can subscribe to it. Look at the bottom of the right column of the blog for instructions. Kol tuv! Sheryl Sheryl F. [ha-Safran]: Books for prisoners
Hi, A while ago someone had posted an address for sending books for prisoners. We did send some of our duplicates and non-Judaica, but then misplaced the address. If someone still had the address, please let us know so that we can pass on more books. Thanks, Sheryl Sheryl F. Another one to add to your list is: http://www.come-and-hear.com/ Their home page says An educational forum for the examination of religious truth and religious tolerance I found their site when I was looking for online sources of Rabbinic texts to include on our website. They have digitized an English translation of the Talmud. But, they also have several articles on the Jewish plot against Christians. They use quotes from the Talmud to show how inconsistant/arbitrary Judaism is. The site is very cleverly put together mixing Jewish authorities with their own scholars Sheryl Sheryl F. Sheryl Stahl -Original Message- From: David E. S. Stein [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, May 23, 2005 7:36 AM To: Sheryl Stahl Subject: Hebrew Bible: Textual criticism and gender-accurate translation -- new web-based materials Announcing a new section of the URJ Press web site: The Torah: Documentation for the Revised Edition http://www.urjpress.com/torahrevision/documentation.htmlwww.urjpress.com/torahrevision/documentation.html More than 360 pages of new online material from URJ Press refers to its recently published (2005) revised edition of The Torah: A Modern Commentary (1981), edited by Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut. Written in English, this material spotlights the Masoretic Hebrew Bible text and a gender-accurate Bible translation of four of its books. Both have been subjects of longstanding controversy in Jewish circles and beyond. Part I describes the editorial policy for the preparation of the revised edition's Hebrew text, followed by a catalog of changes to that text, both for the Torah (Five Books of Moses) and the haftarot (prophetic lectionary). The broader significance of this work arises from the fact that the first edition's Hebrew text had been a fairly standard received text, whereas the revised edition's text is based on a collation of reliable manuscripts by the master Tiberian Masorete, Aaron ben Asher, and those most closely associated with him. Consequently this catalog of changes may well be the most detailed comparison to date of the differences between representatives of the two major types of Masoretic Hebrew text in use today. Of the discrepancies between the two types of Hebrew text, nearly all are on the relatively minute level of cantillation, secondary accents, word count, and reading rhythm. One of the stated goals of the catalog is to enlighten readers as to the types of variance in the text of the Hebrew Bible as we have received it, and what can go wrong in its transmission. Therefore the documentation not only tabulates more than 800 discrepancies between the two versions but also classes them by quality and significance. It shows where the Masoretic textual reading in the old manuscripts differs from that in all received editions, versus where it differs from only some of the received editions. In other words, it sheds lights on the little-known fact that editions of the Hebrew Bible, including the received editions, all differ from each other in manifold small ways that are not simply typographical errors. Part 2 of the documentation accounts for the revised edition's gender-accurate translation of the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. For those books, the revised edition adapted the New Jewish Publication Society (NJPS) translation, a philologically based, sense-for-sense rendering. (For Genesis, the new edition relies upon a different translation altogether.) Based on recent archaeological and social-science reconstructions of ancient Israelite society, the adapted translation portrays social gender in the biblical text the way that the original ancient audience would have understood those references. It also gives consideration to how contemporary readers understand -- or misunderstand -- the construction of gender in the ancient Near East. The documentation answers Frequently Asked Questions about the methodology used to adapt the NJPS translation. Furthermore, it includes more than six hundred translator's notes, edited for online publication, which provide an unusually rigorous, detailed, and systematic analysis of biblical gender ascriptions. WHO: Rabbi David E. S. Stein is revising translator and author of the new documentation. Previously he served as production editor for Etz Hayim: Torah and Commentary (2001) and as managing editor for The JPS Hebrew-English Tanakh (1999). Consulting editors for the translation adaptation effort were Prof. Carol Meyers (Duke University) and Prof. Adele Berlin (University of Maryland). WHY: The material is available for free download, as part of the URJ Press commitment to be accountable to readers for its revisions to a best-selling work. The URJ Press, based in New York City, is the publishing arm of the Union for Reform Judaism. http://www.urjpress.com/torahrevision/documentation.htmlwww.urjpress.com/torahrevision/documentation.html Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the AJL

RE: [ha-Safran]: Subject search vs. Key Word
This is definitely an issue with our patrons too. I usually recommend that they do a two step search. I tell them to start with a keyword search (which they're going to do anyway),pick out a couple of records that look good and then check what subject headings have been assigned to them. I then recommend that they do a new search under those subject headings. Since LC subjects are not very intuitive, I think this approach points them to the best terms pretty quickly. But it also depends on what they're looking for. If they're doing a major research paper, they should find all (or at least a lot of the resources available). If the assignment is to find any book or article, then finding one or 2 things in a keyword search might be fine. Sheryl Sheryl F. Hi Dan, et al, You didn't mention HUC's Cincinnati policy about dust jackets ... from what I remember the practice had been to cut the inside flaps of the dust jacket and glue them into the books to preserve any author information etc. I know that jackets had been selectively kept as well (but not cataloged at all) I don't know if this the still the practice there.
