RE: [ha-Safran]: AJL Newletter

2010-11-08 Thread Stanley Nachamie
I haven't kept up with this whole thread, but I read Steven Bergson's
post about the online newsletter being available to a wider audience.
Has it been decided that the online newsletter will be available to
anyone, and not password-protected (and thus only available to paid
subscribers or members)?

Another library organization to which I belong moved their newsletter
online while raising their dues at the same time! I would read the
paper copies when I used to get them, but never go looking for it
anymore. (Initially, they would send email out when a new issue was
available, but they haven't done that for years.)

Thank you, and Shabbat Shalom.

2010-11-04 Thread ALBA TOSCANO
Hey, team, how's autumn treating everybody? Though fall has always
been my favourite season hands down (I love the smell), I have to
admit that I'm enjoying this one even more than usual. I wonder why
that might be. Anyways,

Madden,Emily A wrote:

>Will we be able to print-off copies of the entire newsletter
and this sparked a thought in my head. How's this for an idea? (I'm
not trying to be a smart-butt here so bear with and humour me a
little...) Instead of a news-letter, why not a AJL, 3-times-a-year,
news-paper?

I really like getting the newsletters. I've saved every single one
over these last 13 years, but even I have had to recognize that I
rarely re-read 10-year old newsletters no matter what the
organization might be (except for maybe Pomegranite Guild Jewish
Needlework club which has some really cool patterns for tora scroll
covers and petit point tallit bags...), especially if I can find the
articles in the AJL web page. Rarely do I take the vintage issues out
for some light after-supper pre-bedtime reading.

On the other hand, I like buying newspapers, too. Mostly because they
are multi-purpose items. I cut articles out of newspapers and keep
them in folders. I read all the advertisements and do the sudoku
puzzle. (an Atlantic Monthly-style, jewish library puzzle might be
fun). I save newspapers for up to 2-3 months and then when there's
enough I recycle them or turn them into papier mache puppets or other
manual arts projects, re-line the canary's cage or use them for
draining the oil from falafel and Januca sufganiot.

The news-letter could be printed as a news-paper with book adverts,
chapter news, blurry photos of smiling persons, an opinionated column
or two, ya di ya di da And if you want to save them, you can do that, too.

Happy autumn and

I am sorry to hear that. May I ask if this is because of certain
reading habits or has to do with an access (or lack of it) to a computer?
Thanks,

RE: [ha-Safran]: AJL Newletter

2010-11-04 Thread Kolodney, Uri
Emily,
Thank you for your questions.
Although not all technicalities are set up yet, my goal is to post
each issue of the reviews and the news as two separate PDF files. One
could print out the whole PDF or part of it as they wish. The plan is
that within the PDF itself more content would be linked outside. For
example, to a vendor's website, or ISBN's linked to Amazon, email
addresses and so on.

As for historical archiving, all back print issues are kept with the
AJL archivist Joy Kingsolver. I can say now that we are working with
Ebsco and planning to contact also JSTOR in order to digitize and
index back issues. This is still in the works and I will update once
I have actual results to report. In addition, some of the back issues
are already on the AJL website (as full PDF files), and I plan to
post more of them once we have them digitized.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks,
Uri

2010-11-04 Thread Joy Kingsolver
Emily raises an interesting point. Since the original
form of the newsletter will now be digital, it should
be archived in that form. It will also have to be
archived in print form to ensure that it will not
be lost due to digital format changes.

The details will be worked out before the first digital
issue comes out.

2010-11-02 Thread Lisa Silverman
I agree that changing from reading a printed publication to reading an
online one may cause some people to not read the Newsletter in the new
format. However, I intend to simply click "print" on the Reviews section
so I can read it at my leisure and file it in my office for future
reference.
I am excited about the fact that it will eventually be searchable by
title, which will help when I want to see a past review.

RE: [ha-Safran]: AJL Newletter

2010-11-02 Thread Madden,Emily A
Will we be able to print-off copies of the entire newsletter in
something like a PDF format or, is it going to be reformatted to the
degree that articles & topics will be presented in a more dynamic
environment with hotlinks to individually presented articles --which,
if the latter, would be cumbersome to compile as a print newsletter
[and somewhat wasteful in terms of amount of paper needed to do so]
--since we would have to print each article/column separately? As
well, what is AJL's historical archive intention as regards the online version?

I am sorry to hear about the decision to discontinue publishing the
AJL Newsletter
in print form. My experience with other organisations leads me to suspect that
I'll never get around to reading the thing if I have to go online to do so.
