Dear Safranim,
I am very happy to have received by post the button of AJL Proud member for
2023. It is very well designed, and I was laughing when I read the
catalogue card it was attached to: "Sex Role Perceptions of Palestinian
males and females in Israel".

I was wondering, how many AJL Members are there outside of Israel and the
USA? I feel a little alone as a Proud Member in France.

All the best

[ha-Safran] Reminder: "A Time to Gather: Archives and the Control of Jewish Culture" Roundtable with Dr. Jason Lustig

2022-03-21 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Please join us for the upcoming AJL Roundtable:

*"A Time to Gather: Archives and the Control of Jewish Culture"*

Thursday, March 24, 2022

9:30AM PT / 12:30PM ET / 6:30PM Israel Time

Dr. Jason Lustig, Lecturer and Israel Institute Teaching Fellow at the
University of Texas at Austin’s Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies, will
discuss his recent book *A Time to Gather: Archives and the Control
of Jewish Culture*, published by Oxford University Press in December 2021.

*A Time to Gather* is a transnational history of twentieth-century
Jewish archives
with a focus on Germany, the United States, and the state of Israel, and it
argues that archives have never been neutral. Instead, by looking at the
struggles over who might “own” Jewish history, both before the Holocaust
and especially in its aftermath given the context of Nazi looting and
post-war restitution, the book showcases how archives have always been
battlegrounds not just over the Jewish past but also the possibilities of
the future. Dr. Lustig will also discuss ongoing efforts to create
monumental archives of the Jewish past, and how digitization magnifies,
rather than mitigates, concerns about “owning” the past.

* Register by March 22 to receive the introduction of the book prior to the
program. Discussion is encouraged.

Members-only event. The event is organized by the RAS Division and all AJL
members are welcome. To register:

[ha-Safran] Reminder: Feb 16 event, "Big Data Tools in Jewish Texts Analysis"

2022-02-13 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Please join us this Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at 12:30 pm EST/7:30 pm
Israel time for our DH Clinic #4 event:

*Implementation of Big Data Tools in Jewish Texts Analysis*

*Dr. Isaac Hershkowitz & Dr. Leore Sachs Shmueli, Jewish Philosophy
Department, Bar Ilan University will present on* new ways to address
classical questions of Jewish studies. We wish to demonstrate how text
mining tools can be useful for “distant” reading of large corpuses and shed
light on pivotal, even centuries’ old, questions and challenges of Jewish
scholarship.

Perplexity regarding authenticity and authorship, spatiotemporal and
interschool transformations of texts and ideas, identification and analysis
of major patterns, concepts, and social shifts reflecting cultural
significance—these are some of the challenges that we attempt to outline
and undertake.

Examining methodological challenges and initial findings of Big Data tools
in Jewish studies in this presentation may pave important paths to the
future of the field, and the role of libraries in it.

This session is sponsored by AJL’s RAS Division and is open to all members
of AJL. Members only.

movement of Jewish texts and ideas from place to place and across time.
Workshop participants will have the chance to learn about the conceptual
and methodological development of the project, and discuss with the

[ha-Safran] Wikidata Beginners' Workshop (Wednesday, May 26)

2021-05-19 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Please join us next Wednesday, May 26, between 12:30-2:00 pm EST
(9:30-11:00 AM PT or 7:30-9:00 pm in Israel) for the *Wikidata Beginners'
Workshop.* The workshop will be led by Neil Manel Frau-Cortes, chair of
the AJL Cataloging Committee and Assistant Head, Cataloging and Metadata
Services at University of Maryland Libraries.

Wikidata is a free, open, structured data platform that anyone can edit. At
the same time, it offers enough granularity and connectivity to be used for
authority management. Today more and more libraries are considering
Wikidata as an environment for the creation of linked data entities,
particularly for digital and special collections. In this workshop you will
learn the basics of entity creation and will have the opportunity to start
editing records with the help of our instructors.

This session is sponsored by AJL's RAS Division and is members-only. All
AJL members are welcome.

*Note:* *Please register in advance.* *For those that wish to participate
in the hands-on session, please create a Wikidata account and bring two
examples of personal names you want to establish. Before the workshop, you
will be contacted by the instructor with further details.*

[ha-Safran] May 13 roundtable: "Digitization basics for small synagogue and community archives"

2021-05-06 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Please join us on *Thursday, May 13, 2021, 12:30 pm EST/5:30 pm London/7:30
pm Israel*, for the roundtable:

*Digitization basics for small synagogue and community archives*
Moderator:* Amalia S. Levi, RAS Division President*

Would you like to digitize your collections to provide online access, use
them for engaging the public, or as a preservation means to avoid ‘tear and
wear’ of the originals? Are you a small organization and would like to
learn a bit more about funding, equipment, staffing and standards? This
roundtable is meant as a ‘light’ introduction to many aspects of
digitization that might seem daunting, and will allow plenty of time for
discussion.

This members-only event is presented by the RAS and SSCPL Divisions. Please
find information on how to register in your emails.

Sincerely,

[ha-Safran] Upcoming DH Clinic #2: "Visualizing Networks in Archival Documents" (April 28)

2021-04-23 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Please join us next week for the second in our DH Clinic series with the
title:

*Holocaust Studies and Digital Humanities: Visualizing Networks in Archival
Documents*
Wednesday, April 28, 2021
9:30PM PT / 12:30PM ET / 7:30PM Israel Time

*Presenting: Dr. Abby Gondek, Morgenthau Scholar-in-Residence, Roosevelt
Institute/FDR Library*

During this DH clinic, Dr. Gondek will discuss how she used Nodegoat, an
open access database and network visualization tool, to track the influence
of women in the U.S. Treasury department (especially Henrietta Klotz) on
the decisions made by Henry Morgenthau Jr. (the Secretary of the Treasury,
1934-1945) regarding the rescue and relief of refugees during World War II.
Henrietta Stein Klotz was the woman who supervised the organizing and
indexing of the Henry Morgenthau Jr. Diaries. She also directly impacted
the stance and actions taken by the FDR administration through her 37-year
relationship with Henry Morgenthau Jr. Gondek selected nodegoat because of
its versatility; it enables users to design their own data models and
visualize historical social networks chronologically and geographically.
Another key reason is that it supports the crafting of multi-layered
networks in which various types of nodes (“objects”) and relationships can
be displayed simultaneously or independently, promoting a “continuous
process of interaction with data” leading to deeper “levels of
interpretation.” Examples of multiple “nodes” that can be displayed at one
time in nodegoat are: people, organizations, and racial or religious
identities. Nodegoat enables the visualization of “broader social
institutions” and the mindsets of individuals simultaneously.

The roundtable will allow plenty of time for discussion. This is a
members-only event, presented by the RAS Division, but all members are
welcome to attend. Please find registration information in your inboxes.

[ha-Safran] April 12, AJL Presents 'Books about Books': Joshua Teplitsky, "Prince of the Press"

2021-04-06 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Dear list members,

Please join us for the upcoming event in the series "AJL Presents: Books
about Books" to hear Dr. Joshua Teplitsky discuss his book Prince of the
Press: How One Collector Built History's Most Enduring and Remarkable
Jewish Library
.
The event will take place on April 12, 2021 at 12:30 pm EST; 5:30 pm UK;
7:30 pm Israel.

David Oppenheim (1664–1736), chief rabbi of Prague in the early eighteenth
century, built an unparalleled collection of Jewish books, all of which
have survived and are housed in the Bodleian Library of Oxford. His
remarkable collection is a testament to the myriad connections Jews
maintained with each other across political borders. Oppenheim’s world
reached the great courts of European nobility, and his family ties brought
him into networks of power, prestige, and opportunity that extended from
Amsterdam to the Ottoman Empire. His impressive library functioned as a
unique source of personal authority that gained him fame throughout Jewish
society and beyond. His story brings together culture, commerce, and
politics, all filtered through this extraordinary collection. Based on the
careful reconstruction of an archive that is still visited by scholars
today, Joshua Teplitsky’s book offers a window into the social life of
books in early modern Europe.

*This event is presented by AJL's RAS Division, but it is open to everyone,
members and non-members alike.* Please click here

[ha-Safran] Today: Demystifying cataloguing roundtable

2021-03-16 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Dear list members,

Join us today at 12:30 pm EDT for Cataloguing de-mystified, a joint AJL-AJS
members-only roundtable.
*Please note the daylight saving time in the US. The event will take place
16:30 pm UK time and 18:30 pm in Israel.*

Our very own Haim Gottschalk, Jasmin Shinohara and Neil Manel Frau-Cortes
and will be there to discuss any cataloguing questions you might have. This
cataloging roundtable will demystify the work catalogers do. Did you know
that when a scholar submits their manuscript to a publisher, the publisher
will send the galleys to the Library of Congress to catalog the work before
it is published? Did you know that catalogers do the intellectual activity
that allows access and discovery of the scholars' work that allow other
scholars access to that work and further research. Catalogers play an
important role in the scholarly ecosystem.

For registration information, please see your inbox.

Our next event, which is open to the public, will be on April 12, 2021,
12:30 pm EDT. As part of the series "AJL Presents: Books about Books,"
Joshua Teplitsky will present his book *Prince of the Press*. We have
several other exciting RAS events lined up for March, April and May. Please
see here
.
Looking forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Amalia S. Levi

[ha-Safran] AJL PRESENTS "Books About Books" series: Sefer Tagin Fragments from the Cairo Genizah

2020-12-30 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Don't forget to sign up for the upcoming lecture about the new book *Sefer
Tagin* Fragments from the Cairo *Genizah*
, during which Torah scribe Marc
Michaels will take us on a journey through some scribal oddities.

The event will take place online on January 19, 2021 at 9:30am PT / 12:30pm
ET / 7:30pm Israel Time.

This event is sponsored by AJL's RAS Division. All members and non-members
are welcome. It is part of the *AJL PRESENTS "Books About Books" series. *To*
r*egister:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUud-CgrjkoGdQ2lYnk0-IYLU1vPqmeUoFK__;!!KGKeukY!m9hcNK_e1uBx1QS28iIPSil_pB0P1T6b60_fIdUn4Hb_YUM6j1VUg45evq58t16zD4Q$

Abstract:

In his new book Sefer Tagin *Fragments from the Cairo* Genizah, Sofer STa"M
Marc Michaels transcribes and recreates fragments of arguably the earliest
found manuscript of the manual for *sofrim* (scribes) concerning the
decorative *tagin* (tittles) and 'strange' letter forms that adorn certain
words in the *Torah*. Comparing these found fragments against other core
and secondary sources of *Sefer Tagin* (including several pages of a new
secondary source), Michaels establishes the most likely readings to assist
the reconstruction of the fragments and shed light on the original
intention of the author of *Sefer Tagin*. Learn about how the book came to
be, the new finds and see some of the manuscripts that bring these old
traditions to life.

Looking forward to seeing you in this talk, and in the other AJL events
during January.

[ha-Safran] November 4 RAS roundtable: Funding Challenges

2020-11-03 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Please join us tomorrow (November 4) for this month's RAS roundtable.

*Topic: Funding Challenges*

*Time: 9:30am PT / 12:30pm ET / 7:30pm Israel Time*

Libraries and archives face increased challenges not only due to budgetary
cuts, but also because COVID has meant loss of income, user restrictions,
and cuts in staffing, among other issues. Archivists and librarians are
increasingly called to “do more with less” while continuing to serve their
patrons and at the same time safeguard their collections.

This roundtable is meant as a space of open discussion and sharing of
experiences and ideas. Some points we seek to discuss are: In what ways
have you been impacted by funding challenges? How have you adapted and
improvised to “do more with less”? Is this really possible? What new
avenues for funding have you sought?

The roundtable has been scheduled so as to accommodate international
participation. We look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow!

*This roundtable is sponsored by AJL's RAS division, but all members are
welcome. *

Sincerely,

Amalia S. Levi

[ha-Safran] Reminder: RAS Roundtable on Digital Resources (Tuesday, October 6)

2020-10-05 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Thanks to all those who have already registered for tomorrow's members-only
roundtable. You still have time to register to join the discussion
tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6. Times: 9:30 am PST; 12:30 pm EST; 5:30 pm
BST; 7:30 pm Israel. The roundtable will be moderated by Haim Gottschalk
(Library of Congress).

Here is what we will be discussing:
At the AJL 2010 conference in Seattle, the keynote speaker, Dr. Joseph
Janes (University of Washington) remarked that while in the past people had
to physically go to the information they were seeking by going to the
library, today the library is available 24/7 and the information comes to
them. This RAS Roundtable will focus on digital resources. We explore
various facets especially its impact on collection development and
management.

Some general questions to help guide the discussions are:
1.In considering digital resources, would your library also acquire the
print edition or not - Why and why not?

2.Considering Open Access - a. What are the challenges of identifying
and maintaining OA resources? b. In the event that some journals are not
maintained and vanish, is there a back-up plan to replace these journals in
your library?

3.A philosophical question - the relationship between user/patron and
information - a. Do you think that digital resources has impacted that
relationship or not? b. If we were to compare digital resources to the
introduction of the multi-layer text of the Talmud (Soncino or Bomberg),
would you say the impact is similar or different?

Looking forward to seeing you and to the discussion.
Regards,
Amalia S. Levi

[ha-Safran] RAS roundtable tomorrow: "International Collection Development"

2020-09-08 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Please join us tomorrow, Wednesday, September 9, for this month's RAS
roundtable. To accommodate our international members, the roundtable takes
place at 12:30 pm EST.

The topic will be international collection development. Restrictions and
difficulties of collecting from international locations, budgetary cuts,
and the promotion of electronic resources present many challenges for area
studies and Jewish Studies in particular. Recognizing these challenges, AJL
had previously issued a statement on Collecting, Serving Our Users, and
Supporting Vendors in the Time of COVID-19
, and more recently it has joined
efforts with other area studies associations in support of a common
statement on Equity and Access in Higher Education and Academic Libraries
Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic .

Some of the topics we would like to discuss are as follows:

   -

How has your organization’s collection development been impacted by
COVID? What measures, if any, has your organization taken to mitigate
   such challenges?
   -

What steps can we take to support the scholarly ecosystem that sustains
Jewish Studies scholarship, such as vendors in the US and abroad, small
publishers of specialized topics, and other networks of people who provide
   materials and expertise?
   -

How can AJL’s professional network support organizations in matters of
   international collection development?

Looking forward to seeing you there.

[ha-Safran] Archivists at local Jewish historical societies

2020-09-04 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Hi Racheli,

This email raises an important point: engaging archivists from small(er),
local Jewish historical societies.

It's a great topic, and I'd like to remind AJL members that the December
RAS roundtable (scheduled for December 2, 7:30 pm) is dedicated to the
topic of "Archival Material in Synagogue Libraries." We will certainly make
it broader to include archival collections in museums and local historical
societies too.

Furthermore, it will be great to inventory such collections that very often
are 'hidden' (not fully catalogued, and thus not findable in online search
engines). Such collections will be important to document through AJL's new
mapping initiative.

Amalia S. Levi

Subject: [ha-Safran] Archivists at local Jewish historical societies

Dear all,

I am posting for a faculty member. Please respond to him directly (email
below) and forward this note to colleagues at local Jewish historical
societies, if you know any:

For a book I am co-authoring on local Jewish historical societies I am
seeking also to learn about the professional connections of the employees
of those groups. There is no national organization bringing together local
Jewish historical societies. Societies that also are connected to museums
have the opportunity to connect professionally through CAJM (Council of
American Jewish Museums.) Archivists of local Jewish historical societies
could connect professionally through AJL.

I am seeking to determine whether any archivists employed by local Jewish
historical societies do belong to AJL and network through it. I would
welcome hearing from you at joel.gereb...@asu.edu.

Thank you,

Rachel

[ha-Safran] Statement on Equity and Access in Higher Education and Academic Libraries Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic.

2020-08-18 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
AJL has joined several area studies associations in support of a common
statement on Equity and Access in Higher Education and Academic Libraries
Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic . It
aims to draw attention to issues of access and equity for research in
fields that are adversely affected by "e-first" collection policies and
budgetary cuts. The statement was written collaboratively by the Joint Area
Studies Task Force members, and you can see the full list at the end of the
statement.

AJL had previously issued (its own) statement that you can read here.

The page is meant to give Spanish-speaking colleagues an overview of AJL's
mission and activities, and right now is static.

We'd appreciate help from members who can contribute to enrich the Spanish
content of the site and promote outreach. You can either translate existing
content, or write a review or a blog post in Spanish.

If you have questions or suggestions, please let us know.

*Subject:* Brenda S. Banks Travel Award of the Society of American
Archivists (SAA)

Dear Colleagues,

I am a member of the Brenda S. Banks Travel Award Committee of the Society
of American Archivists (SAA), an organization seeking to increase diversity
among the more than 6,2000 professional archivists who are employed by
governments, universities, businesses, libraries, and historical
organizations nationally. SAA promotes the value and diversity of archives
and archivists and develops programs and initiatives to ensure the
diversity of our membership, leaders, the profession, and the archival
record. One of our efforts to increase diversity is to offer competitive
travel awards to members of underrepresented groups. I am writing to ask,
on behalf of SAA, if you might be willing to post information to your
members about the Brend S. Banks Travel Award and membership in SAA, which
is given to each recipient complimentary for one year.

Perhaps some of your members are currently employed in archives and
interested in professional development and networking opportunities. The
Brenda S. Banks Travel Award supports a member of an underrepresented group
to attend the SAA Annual Meeting including registration and related
expenses. Details about the SAA's awards scholarships can be found by
clicking on the link below. Thank you for your support!
