[ha-Safran] Jewish Placemaking Training and Teaching - a Survey by COST Dynamics of Placemaking

2023-10-24 Thread Dov Winer via Hasafran
Dear colleagues,

Fonrobert (2009) identified what she called a new spatial turn in Jewish
Studies producing
a "veritable boom ... of projects that investigate questions of place and
space". Diana Pinto
and Joachim Schlör are among those who pioneered this trend already in the
late nineties.
Many recent conferences and publications on Jewish Spaces testify that this
is an ongoing
vigorous trend.
We have now an opportunity to map how teaching and training programs
focused on
Jewish Placemaking are being carried out.

The COST Action Dynamics of Placemaking
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.placemakingdynamics.eu/__;!!KGKeukY!2qJ2qI7rlEwBLXtrWVyvtXdsLromTAqHB-BsE-DocPsEpFwLbDdtwFvfrp3K1CBZ47iIGdRC7pCaKwxi_aUfCAAPCyPhbA$
 > seeks to increase knowledge on
experiences
of placemaking training and teaching.

This COST Action is an initiative of the late Eszter Gantner Z"L. She
edited the thematic issue
of the Anthropological Journal of European Cultures on: "Jewish Space
Reloaded!"

The results of the survey will be made available at the site of the action:

Results *pertaining to Jewish Placemaking will be posted here.*

We expect entries coming worldwide and in any language. Readily available
translation
tools now enable an inclusive approach.

Conceptually, the scope is also broad. It is *not restricted* to
placemaking based on urban
planning approaches. This thread, founded by William H. Whyte in the 1960s,
has been
thriving since then, and continues with creative innovations.

Other approaches to teaching placemaking also are welcome. Examples may
include:

Courses stemming from Pierre Nora's concept of "Lieux de mémoire". Any
significant entity,
which by dint of human will or the work of time has become a symbolic
element of the
memorial heritage of a community. Cultural landmarks, places, practices,
and expressions
from a shared past.

Teaching placemaking that involves the concept of social production of
space as conceived
by Henri Lefebvre. Space produced and constructed socially and as a set of
human relations.
This conception became an agenda for a sociology of space and feeds
agonistic political
developments related to placemaking.

In all humanities disciplines, scholars find themselves confronted with the
rapidly increasing availability of digital resources (data), new
technologies to interrogate and analyze them (tools), and the question of
how to engage with these developments. The digitisation boom of the last
two decades, and the rapid advancement of digital tools to analyse data in
myriad ways, have opened up new avenues for humanities research. The field
of Jewish Studies is no exception. How can these digital developments be
harnessed to address specific questions and problems in our field? And what
is the current state of the art?

To probe these questions, the international conference *#DHJewish - Jewish
Studies in the Digital Age* will bring together more than 60 scholars and
heritage practitioners to discuss how the digital turn affects the field of
Jewish Studies.

The conference will take place online through the Morressier virtual

The role of digital/online resources in the Jewish Diaspora communities
*Dov Winer*

Abstract
Globalization, in its earlier stages, was expected to erode national and
ethnic identities. In contrast, ethnicity and
ethnic affiliations persisted, growing socially and politically. This paper
examines the role of the globalizing new
communications technologies on this process, focusing on Diasporas. The
study of trans-state networks based
on ethnic solidarity, connections and affinities in the framework of social
and political science is quite recent.
Following a clarification of the distinction between classical and modern
Diasporas we analyse a particular case
study, that of the Jewish Diaspora. This diaspora was an early adopter of
computer-based communications
and the Internet for a wide range of purposes. Early events are described
including the diffusion of the Internet
to Israel, the planning of a Global Jewish Information Network, Israel 2020
macro scenarios for Israel and
the Jewish People and the decision on Jewish Peoplehood through
communication technologies. A survey of
historical systems (Responsa, BBS, and Usenet) is followed by a description
of the Jewish population and the
wide variety of Jewish Web based activities today. These include the
Institutional landscape; Jewish media —
press, radio, video and blogs; the impact on Jewish religious observance;
Jewish genealogy; Online dating;
Social networks; Jewish education; Online learning; Jewish Studies and
Digital Humanities; Jewish memory.
Judaica Europeana supports the activities previously described by
aggregating and facilitating the access
and the re-use of Jewish digital culture. Europeana is the leading global
digital library for cultural heritage
as well as a lively eco-system for relevant stakeholders.

[ha-Safran] EVA/Minerva Brazil International Conference on Advanced Technologies for Culture 14-15 May 2019, São Paulo, Brazil

2019-04-18 Thread Dov Winer via Hasafran
*EVA/Minerva Brazil*

*International Conference on Advanced Technologies for Culture*

*14-15 May 2019, São Paulo, Brazil*

This conference is part of the EVA Conference International
network and organized as a joint
initiative with the EVA/Minerva Jerusalem Conference
.
The partners producing the conference are UNESP (University of the State of
São Paulo); PUC-SP (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo);
and the Jewish Museum of São Paulo.

Conference Web Site: https://www.evaminerva.net.br

Registration: http://tinyurl.com/evaminerva-br

Program: https://tinyurl.com/program-BR

Brochure: https://tinyurl.com/folder-BR Poster:
https://tinyurl.com/poster-BR

*Purpose*

Cultural Heritage is a key element to promote socio-economic development,
but its full potential –as an engine for innovation and growth,
remains unfulfilled. To bridge this gap there is need to address the
complex links between traditional cultural assets and policies
(cultural heritage, dynamic cultural institutions and services) and the
opportunities provided by new demands and societal needs. This
implies involving actors that work in the cultural heritage field with
those developing and implementing advanced technologies attuned
to the new civilization. Such civilization has evolved due to the impact on
society of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies)
in its various guises - the New Media, the Internet, the Web, mobile
services and the IoT (Internet of Things).

The conference will be a meeting of the relevant professional communities
from Brazil and from abroad enabling exchange of experiences,
mutual learning and to build joint projects. This initiative is in synergy
with the increased cooperation between the European Union and
Brazil. The co-financing arrangements for RTD were extended in May 2018 to
the whole country while previously they were available
only in eight states.

Re: [ha-Safran] Announcing the launch of the website Jewish Digital Collections

2018-11-27 Thread Dov Winer via Hasafran
Dear Dianne,

Chapeau! This is a very helpful resource and very well done.

The challenge for our community now is to aggregate as much as
possible these digital libraries. This can be carried out both in
Europeana <http://europeana.eu> as well as at the Digital Public Library of
America <http://dp.la>.

In this context I am happy to tell you that Judaica Europeana II has just
been approved by the European Commission and should begin in
early 2019. The resource you have developed will expand our
catching net for additional of Jewish Cultural Heritage digital libraries
to be aggregated to Europeana. A Culture Chatbot is also coming
soon...

Best regards,
Dov

[ha-Safran] Israel Country Report on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Education for 2018

2018-07-03 Thread Dov Winer
The HaSafran community may have a particular interest in the section of
the following report that deals with educational digital contents made
available by the Israel Ministry of Education

The *Israel Country Report on Information and Communication Technologies
(ICT) in Education for 2018* has
just been published by the European Schoolnet (EUN). The report is
available at: https://tinyurl.com/2018-doh-IL .
The full set of national reports published by the EUN is available at:
http://www.eun.org/resources/country-reports

The Israel Ministry of Education national computerization program reaches
95% of the teachers (150,000 teachers)
as well as about 50% of the students (800,000). This program is a central
tool to further the achievement of the
work programme of the Ministry for 2019-2020 that set quantifiable
achievable goals in areas like: Excellence in
learning; Equal opportunities; Society of Values; and Quality of Human
Capital.

The report reviews the different policies pursued in this area and specific
initiatives. It details the integration of
digital technologies in the curriculum: School improvement; digital
technologies and the curriculum framework;
Digital Technology based assessment; student's digital competences and
their assessment.

Digital content development includes the provision of cheaper textbooks,
digital textbooks and textbook loans;
content sharing and creation and the active role of teachers; accessibility
for learners with disabilities; learning platforms.

Teacher education for digital learning review some outstanding programs. It
details how digital technologies are
deployed in initial teacher education; in in-service teacher education; and
the ambitious national program for
teachers' professional development, Ichud mul Iichud (generalities vs
particularities) that provides opportunities
for teachers in most disciplines to incorporate in their teaching the most
innovative new pedagogies anchored in ICT.

[ha-Safran] Launched: National Portal Museums in Israel

2017-11-30 Thread Dov Winer
Cheers to Shirit Keessem (cc'ed) head of the Department of Museums and

Plastic Arts and her team at the Ministry of Culture who led the
development of

this important portal

The National Portal Museums in Israel was launched last week at the
14th EVA/MInerva Jerusalem Conference on Advanced Technologies for Culture.
<http://digital-heritage.org.il/program2017.html>

The portal:

http://www.museumsinisrael.gov.il/en/Pages/default.aspx

The announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

http://mfa.gov.il/MFA/IsraelExperience/Culture/Pages/The-Museums-in-Israel-
National-Portal-Culture-and-History-for-the-Digital-Age-.aspx

The Museums in Israel National Portal
<http://www.museums.gov.il/en/Pages/default.aspx> is the new virtual home
for dozens of Israel’s
museums, providing visitors with unlimited access to more than 63,000
photographs,
items, and exhibits with a touch of a button.

The five year project, which began in 2012, through a joint venture of
Israel’s Ministry of
Culture and Sport, the Prime Minister’s Office, and Israel’s Heritage
Division, is the first
of its kind large scale initiative to consolidate Israel’s museums under
one digital roof.

The portal, which features works of art, archaeological artifacts,
extensive Judaica, and
original historical documents from prehistoric times to today, will add
tremendous value
to students, researchers, and visitors interested in a number of fields. In
addition to some
of Israel’s most outstanding collections, the portal also gives visitors
access to millions
of items featured in Europeana, <https://www.europeana.eu/portal/en> the
European digital cultural library, through an agreement
signed between the two parties.

Enjoy!

Re: [ha-Safran] Credibility of direct order for Mirik Snir books

2015-11-22 Thread Dov Winer
Shalom Karen,

I have checked and the following appear as contact information
in the Mirik Snir Hebrew site:

email: i...@mirik-snir.com
Phone for orders +972.3.5587990 ext. 3 or +972.504546021 (talk to Shay).

The two order links in the English site now are either to Kar-Ben
(link failed and transferred to http://www.karben.com/
 and the
other to Amazon,
Maybe the site was hacked when the order you mention was posted
and perhaps Blue White Direct is a rogue site.

Regards,
Dov

  Hello, fellow librarians!

I just found out about the Bible Accordance database, which is pretty
impressive and would be useful for our Tanach classes. But I wanted a
database that would perform these tremendous concordance feats as well as
contain text and analysis tools for other sefarim in addition to the
Tanach. My colleague mentioned the Responsa Project, run by Bar Ilan
University, which looks like a dream. The problem is, it doesn’t contain
texts with English translations. Is there anything similar to the Responsa
Project that also has English translations of everything? What amazing
Judaic databases other than Jewish Studies Source and EJ Online are day
 school teachers using?
