[ha-Safran] Books Needed for the Emerging Jewish communities in Nigeria

2023-12-28 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
PLEASE SEE MESSAGE BELOW FROM RABBI HOWARD GORIN AND RESPOND TO HIM DIRECTLY AT
hdgori...@gmail.com:

Are you looking to deaccession or downsize your library? The emerging Jewish
communities in Nigeria would welcome your books.

* Basic Judaism / Introductions to Judaism (practices, values, history,
etc.)

*   Chumashim (Hebrew/English) - Artscroll/Stone, Etz Hayim, UJR, Hertz -
the JPS Torah Commentary

*   Chumash with Rashi (Hebrew/English)

*   Torah Commentaries - e.g., Artson's Bedtime Torah, Frankel's The Five
Books of Miriam

*   Siddurim (ArtScroll is preferred)

* Tanakhim (Hebrew/English or English only)

* Soncino Press - Tanakh, Talmud, Midrash, Zohar

* Overviews of World Jewish History (histories of specific communities
are not as useful)

*   Kittzur Shulchan Arukh (Hebrew/English); books on the 613 Mitzvot;
books on minhagim; etc.

* Musar - Mesilat Yesharim, Orchot Tzaddikim, etc. - and Jewish ethics

* Books on Israel and Zionism

* Books to counter missionaries' arguments

The intended recipients are earnest but their Hebrew knowledge, for the most
part, is still developing. Their outlook is what we might call Orthodox.

March 31, 2023 / 9 Nisan 5783

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Today, we are in the midst of the countdown to פסח/Passover/Pesach, which
begins on Wednesday evening, April 5.
Exodus 12 teaches us where to start counting:
 הַחֹ֧דֶשׁ הַזֶּ֛ה לָכֶ֖ם רֹ֣אשׁ חֳדָשִׁ֑ים רִאשׁ֥וֹן הוּא֙ לָכֶ֔ם לְחׇדְשֵׁ֖י
הַשָּׁנָֽה׃

"This month shall mark for you the beginning of the months; it shall be the
first of the months of the year for you." (Exodus 12:1-2).

Our text continues with the laws and statutes that unpack and explain the
story, and the meaning behind the story. Each bit of the story offers an
intricate detail. Each verse offers a different perspective. All the verses are
important–the whole story would be incomplete without them. Every letter, every
word, offers meaning, and endless opportunities for commentary.

In November 2019, the Gender Equity in Hiring Project attempted an experiment
in collaborative transparency by collecting and counting: inaugurating a salary
sharing spreadsheet to help Jewish communal professionals benchmark and analyze
their salary and benefits. In less than 6 weeks, over 730 individuals
contributed their data.

Our dream was–and still is–that each and every one of us would count, and that
our communal striving toward pay equity, transparency and compensation equity
would initiate conversations and changes on the ground. We want to help our
organizations plan to count each person–to make sure that each one of us
matters.
Your collective enthusiasm about this project, and your desire to support its
continuation has truly inspired us. The launch of the revised Open Salary
Spreadsheet (OSS) coincides with our preparations for Pesach as we count the
days toward the first seder on the 15th of Nisan. We are pleased to share this
with you and invite you to contribute, and to count.

We are grateful for your willingness to share in this experiment, to populate
it anew with data, to rededicate it and reinaugurate our collective accounting
for a new decade and a new time, in this season. The data that you contribute,
like the story of the Exodus and our sacred texts, will offer a different and
important perspective, and all contributions are important, as our work would
be incomplete without them.

Contribute to the Open Salary
Spreadsheet (OSS)

Learn more about the OSS
here.

Access our Media Kit
here.

We invite you to build this resource with us, to count with us and to have
yourself counted.

Consider sharing your data, anonymously, so that we together will build a
community that can learn and grow from one another, and so that all may rise by
sharing information transparently and publicly.

Wishing you a joyous spring and Passover - make it count!
In partnership,

Sara, Sara Beth & Jackie
The Gender Equity in Hiring Project Team

Re: [ha-Safran] Short 4th Grade Activity to Choose a book to Check out

2022-12-12 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Hi Janice,

Here’s a brainstorm combining the “blind date with a book” program with the
grab bag game that we play at our family Hanukkah party:

· Wrap up a selection of books in plain brown paper or wrapping paper.

· Use a sharpie to write key words of phrases that describe the book.

· Have the kids pick numbers out of a hat.

· #1 chooses a book, reads the keywords out loud but does not unwrap it.

· #2 can either steal #1’s book or pick a different one.

· #3 can either steal #1 or #2’s or pick a different one and keep going
until everyone has a book.

· If your book gets “stolen” you go back to the table and pick a new one.

· After everyone has a book, they can unwrap them to see what they got.

Of course, if they don’t like what they got, or have already read it, they can
choose something else from the shelf but this could be fun. And, 4th graders
are usually pretty good sports. Let me know if you try it and how it goes.
Good luck!

Association of Jewish Libraries
Digital Conference 2023: Call for Proposals

The Association of Jewish Libraries is now soliciting proposals for its
upcoming Digital Conference 2023: A World of Possibilities, Monday, June
19–Thursday, June 22, 2023.

Librarians, scholars, educators, archivists, authors, and library advocates are
invited to submit proposals for papers and presentations on all aspects of
librarianship and on topics related to Jews, Judaism, the Jewish experience, or
Israel. Presentations should be relevant to library professionals working in
academic and research institutions, archives, synagogues, day schools, or
Jewish community centers as well as public schools or libraries serving Jewish
communities. Past topics have included collection development and management,
programming, reader advisory services, special and rare collections, archival
science, cataloging and classification, Jewish literature and literacy, digital
and electronic resources, and emerging technologies. All presentations will be
delivered over Zoom.

This year's conference theme is A World of Possibilities. We especially
encourage submissions that highlight new ideas, programs, and systems you have
learned about, used, and/or developed over these tumultuous three years. Topics
could include but are not limited to long-term changes in library design, new
Judaica programming or collection areas in Jewish studies, and international
collaborations possible in the virtual era. Since our digital conference is not
bound by geography, we welcome submissions from our colleagues around the world.

Co-presenters and panel presentations are welcome; however, each presenter must
submit a separate proposal. All submissions must be received by January 31,
2023. Proposals will be reviewed by the programming committee and all
applicants will be notified in March 2023. Questions? Contact
confere...@jewishlibraries.org.

[ha-Safran] Film Recommendation Needed

2022-11-09 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
We are resurrecting our once popular "Chinese Dinner & a Movie" event this year
on December 22. I am looking for a light, fun film to show at the synagogue
that will appeal to a mostly older crowd of empty-nesters, active retirees and
seniors. Could be a feature film or a documentary; comedy or something in the
"edu-tainment" category; Jewish content but NOT Holocaust; preferably in
English but sub-titles are OK too. In the past we showed Dreaming of a Jewish
Christmas, Fiddler, Dough and Land of Milk & Honey. We also showed The New Jew
during the pandemic and that was a hit so an episode or two from a series could
work as well. We don't want to conflict with our local JCC and Israeli film
festivals so I'm thinking maybe there is an older/classic film that would be
fun to revisit.

Please let me know if you have any "tried & true" suggestions that fit the
above requirements for this event.

Thanks!

Re: [ha-Safran] Is the collection The Man Who Sold Air in the Holy Land - Short Stories, by Omer Friedlander written by Hebrew ?

2022-10-03 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Hi Amalia,

I believe Omer Friedlander writes in English. While he was born in Jerusalem
and grew up in Tel Aviv, he has a BA in English Literature from the University
of Cambridge and an MFA from Boston University. He currently lives in New York.
 Go to
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.omerfriedlander.com/aboutomer__;!!KGKeukY!2x9eF9x-DJQGJtqB-EMvbiyOYnpv_4a0nz-FRFMjMILF1uTJ7gXUoTzu5DMaUsH70PQIhDrZU2bCtP9LrwkZxg$
   to learn more.

I discovered him when his short story “Alte
Sachen” was one of the finalists for the Chicago Tribune’s Nelson Algren Literary
Award and the story was published in the paper in June 2020. I located two of
his other stories online (“Jellyfish in
Gaza” and “Operation
Tamar”) and discussed them with my short story discussion group during the
pandemic. So I was really excited to see that his debut collection of stories,
The Man Who Sold Air in the Holy Land, was being published this year by Random
Hoyse. "Alte Sachen" and "Jellyfish in Gaza" are still my favorites but "Jaffa
Oranges," "Checkpoint," “The Sephardi Survivor,” and the title story are
excellent too. While some of the other stories aren't as strong, Friedlander is
a fresh, new young voice and this solid collection definitely deserves a place
alongside Israeli and expat writers like Etgar Keret, Ayelet Tsabari, Eshkol
Nevo, and Nicole Krauss. I highly recommend it!

[ha-Safran] Judaica Roadshow: Your Jewish Library with Melton International

2022-08-25 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
I thought AJL members might be interested in this online workshop from Melton
International:

Judaica Roadshow: Your Jewish Library
Thursday, September 1, 6:00-7:00pmCT

Join Joellyn Zollman, Ph.D. for a curated conversation about our most treasured
Jewish books. Dr. Zollman will use an Antiques Roadshow-style approach to
explore how our own Jewish books and literature are resources for understanding
American Jewish history, identity, and our own personal tastes. Registrants for
this class will have an opportunity to share their own Jewish bookshelf or
favorite Jewish book and have their own treasures explained by Dr. Zollman.
Together, participants will consider how these books connect to Jewish history,
Jewish memory, and the creation of Jewish life in America. Dr. Joellyn Zollman
holds a Ph. D in Jewish history from Brandeis University. This class combines
two of her areas of specialization, American Jewish history and Jewish culture.
Dr. Zollman serves as a scholar-in-residence for Melton's U.S. based Jewish
Heritage tours, and she is an avid reader.

Cost: $18, sponsored by Melton International and the Jewish Book Council.

Note: They are still accepting submissions for Dr. Zollman to discuss in class.
If you register and would like your bookshelf to be considered for inclusion,
please email ast...@meltonschool.org with a
picture and description.

Re: [ha-Safran] synagogue archivists at AJL

2022-06-10 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Hi Jane,

This is a great topic for our BIRDS OF A FEATHER: SSCPL ROUNDTABLES session at
the conference on Wednesday, June 29 at 9am! The session will provide an
opportunity to "flock together" with similar librarians. First, we'll break
into schools, synagogues, centers, and public libraries groups to discuss
institution-specific topics and concerns. Half-way through the session, groups
will break up to conduct roundtable discussions on specific topics such as
weeding, gift policies, advocacy/promotion, PJ Library book donations, etc. I
think we can definitely add synagogue archives to the list.

If anyone else has ideas for topics, contact Sean Boyle at
boyles...@gmail.com. This will be a great
opportunity to learn from each other!

See you in Philly!

[ha-Safran] Judaica Appraiser

2022-04-04 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
We are looking for an expert Judaica appraiser to appraise the synagogue's
museum collection which includes works from the 18th century to modern times
from around the world. The collection consists of paintings, sculptures,
prints, rare books and Judaic ritual objects such as menorahs, spice boxes,
crowns, rimonim, pointers, breast plates, a unique tik, and more. We have a
fairly complete inventory, with photographs and descriptions, but the
collection hasn't been appraised in many years and we have added new items.
Trusted leads are most appreciated.

Re: [ha-Safran] Holocaust books for children and grade school

2022-03-24 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Hi Katalin,

All of our Holocaust picture books, fiction and non-fiction, are shelved
together in the J section (not in our picture book collection). Middle grade
Holocaust fiction/chapter books are shelved by author in the J Fiction section
but they have a special Holocaust sticker on their spine so that they can be
easily identified (these are the ones we use:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.demco.com/https:/*www.demco.com/subject-classification-labels-holocaust-500-roll__;Lw!!KGKeukY!mbZ7aemuP63I4QOrsq7vxYlhdeSMjjoerNzhQFMloQwlzN32iryr0ylb9I43Ft0_SOw$

).

While I always try to steer students to age appropriate material, if a
religious school student picks out a Holocaust book to check out and I’m
concerned that they may not be ready for it, I send an e-mail to the parents.
Something along the lines of: “Evan picked out the book X from the Library
today and I wanted to give you a heads up. Here’s the publisher’s description
and it’s recommended for ages XXX so you may want to take a look at it first or
read it together. You are welcome to come to the library with him next week to
select something different, if you prefer.” Reactions to my e-mail have ranged
from “thank you for letting me know, we will return it and choose something
else” to “that’s totally fine, he’s already read a ton of books about the
Holocaust.” The response has always been appreciative; never negative.

Good luck!

Hi,
In my library, we have been toying with the idea of separating out books having
to do with the Holocaust for young and grade school children to their own
location. We worry about parents getting upset if a child picks out a book,
without proper preparation for the topic. I would appreciate some feedback

Re: [ha-Safran] Obsolete media in synagogue libraries

2022-03-01 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Last summer we actually paid for a service to come to the synagogue to pick up
and recycle over 700 pounds of VHS tapes, audio-tapes, and CDs that had been
collecting dust and taking up space in the library, schools, offices and
storage closets. It wasn’t cheap but I felt confident that NOBODY wanted this
stuff. It had no resale/historical/archival value. Our only other option was to
put it all in the dumpster but then it would end up in a landfill which didn’t
sit right with me. Luckily, our executive director agreed and the funding did
not come out of the library budget!

This is the company we used:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://bluestarrecyclers.org/__;!!KGKeukY!nmo4_SiAA1VNxjwa-Bekr9ziVsAyfK4Y7ZTQ3knUVkoFeIANvjuqVLtdkd-gtV6R8yc$

I’m guessing there are similar services in other areas.

Good luck!

Have you all tossed your VHS collections? I’ve kept ours because we still have
equipment to play them. But really, is it past time to toss them? Any criteria
for keeping some? People don’t even use DVDs or CDs anymore. In our large (22k
items) collection we have lots of both. I’d be interested in hearing opinions
and experience of others.

[ha-Safran] The Jews are Coming

2022-02-24 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
A colleague is looking for an episode of the Israeli comedy sketch show The
Jews are Coming (with English subtitles) - the one where Batsheva is trying to
coax Solomon to come out of his room. It doesn't seem to be available on You
Tube (while several of the other episodes are) or any of the streaming
services, including ChaiFlicks. If anyone has any leads (free or for a fee),
I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Re: [ha-Safran] in-person preschool storytime?

2021-12-01 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Hi Heidi,

I’ve been leading in-person storytime for the 2, 3 and 4-year-old preschool
classes since last January, plus library visits for the PK-7th grade Religious
School classes since September. We have a statewide indoor mask mandate in
Illinois so I’m wearing a mask and all of the children (even the 2-year-olds!)
and staff are too. Last year, I only saw 1 preschool class per day. This
year, I see two preschool classes per day and up to 4 religious school classes
on Sunday mornings and 2-3 classes on Tuesday/Wednesday afternoons. I have my
3rd shot and vaccination rates are high in our community even among the 5-11
year olds.

Here are my suggestions for you – take any or all of them!

· Put a piece of tape on the floor so that the kids are sitting at
least 6 feet from you.

· Move storytime out of the library to a larger space in the synagogue
(like the social hall) so that everyone can spread out more.

· Shorten storytime to 15 minutes. According to our health department,
you are only considered a close contact of a positive case if you are within 6
feet of the person for 15 minutes or longer.

· Only schedule 1 class per day.

· Use a voice amplifier. I have this one and it works great:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XWV9CCQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1__;!!KGKeukY!gJgCtatSJyqaYfn6Q9JmlpU9MpKXjv405x2FnywxsJwiZlerXifDFGNPhQsCEpduE68$

It really saves your voice and makes it easier for everyone to hear you when
you’re wearing a mask, especially in a big room and/or with a larger group.

Good luck!

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] in-person preschool storytime?

Hello, Heidi:

I have a few thoughts... we definitely all have different comfort levels with
covid. At our preschool, all kids and staff are masked - even if the masks are
not a perfect fit on younger children. For me, I feel protected with my mask on
and 3 vaccines and feel i'm taking an informed low risk in terms of exposure
and low level illness if I do get it - perhaps that's a false sense of security
but for me, it seems reasonable. But that's once a week, not every day.

I do read stories with my mask on and don't seem to have a problem. I believe
you should wear a mask in person or at least a shield. I can generally project
well and be animated pretty well even with the mask on but i'm only doing it
once a week. I find cloth masks much more comfortable.

When I did storytime on zoom last year, I spotlighted my face but pointed an
external camera at the book page or used ebooks so that the pictures were nice
and close. I also only read for 10-15 minutes, shorter periods of time than
in-person.

I do not find it as satisfying personally when the camera is not close enough
to the illustrations and text when I observe other storytimes, which I would
think could be the same for young children unless you are really super dramatic
and able to hold the book up to the camera (which i have trouble doing). But
for some reason, seeing someone reading while sitting in a chair onscreen - i
do not feel a connection. Not sure if that's a helpful suggestion or not. Maybe
you can compromise on in-person once a week and zoom the other days.

Good luck and happy chanukah!
Toby

I'm the librarian in a large synagogue preschool and this year I've been doing
storytime with classes over Zoom (I'm in the library, the kids are in their

director is asking to have the kids come into the library for storytime, with
me reading to them in a transparent mask. The kids are all too young for
vaccines and many are too young for masks.

I've been super cautious during the whole pandemic, so this makes me nervous,
especially with the new variant on the way. Does anyone have any thoughts about
the safety of spending time with multiple groups of unvaxxed unmasked kids on a
daily basis? Or how I can make it safer, if going outdoors is not an option?

Thanks for any ideas,
Heidi

Re: [ha-Safran] Gently used PJ Library books

2021-06-07 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Hi Ann,

I have been accepting them for years (but no, I don’t want yours!)
Fortunately, I have a closet where I can store them. Anytime we have a program
with young children/families, we set-up a “PJ Library Take Table” and I put out
a selection of donated books (usually related to the upcoming holiday) and let
every kid take one or more home. They always do! Obviously, we didn’t give as
many away this past year but we still put them out at all of our outdoor Tot
Shabbat and other programs. Families seem to enjoy trying to find one that
they don’t already have! I also allow the preschool and religious school
teachers to “shop” the closet and take whatever they want for their classrooms.

Good luck!

Dear safranim,

I'm guessing we're all getting this question:
"Would you like our used PJ library books?"

We have accepted some, but don't have the need/capacity to continue to accept,
indefinitely.

Are there libraries who could use them?

Thank you, and hope you and your families are well and hanging in there,

WEEKLY CONFERENCE UPDATE #7

AJL Conference organizers are excited to announce that we will again use the

>From Sarah to Sydney:
The Woman Behind All-of-a-Kind Family
Tuesday, June 29, 9:00amEDT
In the upcoming biography of Sydney Taylor, From Sarah to Sydney: The Woman
Behind All-of-a-Kind
Family (Yale University Press, 6/22/2021), June Cummins (z”l) paid close attention
to how libraries shaped Taylor’s thinking about moral and civic development and
how they impelled her to write stories with positive Jewish characters. Not
only did libraries and librarians figure in Taylor’s books but they also played
a significant role in her success. Along with the public school and the Henry
Street Settlement House, the New York Public library provided a framework for
the child Sarah and the adult Sydney. After Taylor won the second annual
Charles W. Follett Award in children’s literature for All-of-a-Kind Family in
1951, she became a celebrity among librarians for her positive portrayal of
“Kathy the Library Lady” and for championing public libraries in her speeches
and school visits. Alexandra Dunietz, who partnered with June to bring this
publication to life, will focus on June’s portrayal of Taylor’s relationship to
libraries, while also discussing the book as a whole and honoring June, a dear
friend to AJL who is deeply missed.

[ha-Safran] Book Club Recommendation: The Imperfects by Amy Meyerson

2021-05-09 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
ATTENTION BOOK CLUB FACILITATORS:
The Imperfects was just released in paperback and Amy
Meyerson is eager to connect with Jewish book clubs. She zoomed with four of my
groups last fall and the book made for a great discussion and everyone enjoyed
"meeting" her. We also combined it with a virtual screening of the documentary
50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs.
Kraus and filmmaker Steven
Pressman even joined in for one the discussions.

The Imperfects centers on the dysfunctional Miller family, who discover a
historic diamond that's been missing for a century among their grandmother's
belongings when she passes. The Millers are forced to set their differences
aside in order to discover how their grandmother, a Jewish Austrian immigrant,
possessed the valuable diamond and whether it lawfully belongs to them. In the
process, they uncover a past more tragic and powerful than they ever could have
imagined, forever changing their connection to their heritage and each other.

Does anyone have a copy of the video of The Cafeteria by Singer. World Cat
seems to indicate two different ones; 1984 and 2000.

It looks like it was never made into a DVD. The item is no longer available for

Of course, I'd take it in any form.

If so, would you be willing to lend it to me for use in a class?

Film Event: The Last Cyclist

The Last
Cyclist is a scathing satire, originally written in Terezín, in which bicycle riders
are blamed for all of society’s ills and systematically hunted down and
murdered. The play was banned because the Jewish Council of Elders feared that
the allegorical sendup of the Nazis was too dangerous. Nearly lost to time, The
Last Cyclist was painstakingly reconstructed, first as a play and more recently
as a film, earning several awards at 2020 festivals. Conference attendees will
receive a link and promo code to stream the film from home in advance of the

The 2021 Feinstein Lecture
Sunday, June 27, 12:00pmEDT
"The Hidden Treasures of Jewish Ephemera"

Should we preserve, research, and display only precious works of art, rare
manuscripts, and “officially” printed books in the fields that concern us?
During the annual Feinstein Lecture, Dr. Shalom Sabar will present the case for
treating ephemera in general and Jewish ephemera in particular as invaluable
resources for exploring and learning our past and present cultures, and a most
enjoyable personal hobby.

Shalom Sabar is Professor Emeritus of Jewish Art and Folklore at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem. His research and publications concentrate on the
history of Jewish art, ceremonies and rituals, objects in the life and year
cycles, visual folklore, and material culture of Jewish communities in
Christian Europe and the Islamic East. He has published more than 230 essays
and several books on these topics. His latest book is The Sarajevo Haggadah:
History and Art (2018), issued by the National Museum of Bosnia and
Herzegovina, where the codex is kept. He is also a collector of Jewish folk
objects and Israeli ephemera and guides traveling seminars to study Jewish
communities and monuments in many countries in Europe, Central Asia, North
Africa, and India.

About the Feinstein Lecture:
The Association of Jewish
Libraries received a grant from the Foundation for Jewish Culture (FJC) given by the
Myer and Rosalind Feinstein Family to fund an annual lecture. Lectures on
Judaic bibliography and librarianship were delivered at the annual conferences
from 1996-2010. The FJC is no longer active, but it left AJL with monies to
continue these lectures. The Feinstein Lecture resumed at the 2019 AJL
Conference and will continue to encourage and inspire Judaica librarians at
future conferences.

The 2021 Keynote Address
Thursday, July 1, 1:00pmEDT
“The Keepers: Librarians and Archivists as Preservers of the Truth”

Richard Ovenden, Bodley’s Librarian, the senior Executive position of the
Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford, will deliver the closing
Keynote Address during the 2021 AJL Digital
Conference. The preservation of knowledge has been overlooked as a vital function for
society, allocated to libraries and archives for the past three millennia. Mr.
Ovenden will highlight the role of librarians and archivists in delivering this
mission, of increased importance in an era when facts and truth have become
increasingly disputed, to the detriment of open societies, democracy, and the
maintenance of communities.

Richard Ovenden has been Bodley’s Librarian since 2014. Prior to that he held
positions at Durham University Library, the House of Lords Library, the
National Library of Scotland, and the University of Edinburgh. He moved to the
Bodleian in 2003 as Keeper of Special Collections, becoming Deputy Librarian in
2011. He was educated at the University of Durham and University College
London, and holds a Professorial Fellowship at Balliol College, Oxford. He is a
Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, the Royal Society of Arts, and a Member
of the American Philosophical Society. He was made OBE in the Queen’s Birthday
Honours 2019. Richard serves as Treasurer of the Consortium of European
Research Libraries, as President of the Digital Preservation Coalition, and as
a member of the Board of the Council on Library and Information Resources (in
Washington DC). He is a member of the Grolier Club (New York) and the Roxburghe
Club.

Re: [ha-Safran] To be posted, please

2021-01-07 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
I would recommend the following:
Florence Adler Learns to Swim by Rachel Beanland
The Imperfects by Amy Meyerson
The Hours Count by Jillian Cantor
The Last Watchman of Old Cairo by Michael David Lukas
On Division by Goldie Goldbloom
The Third Daughter by Talia Carner
The Two-Family House by Lynda Cohen Loigman
Windy City Blues by Renee Rosen

These were all well received by my book groups and I think they are especially
accessible reads and would appeal to a wide audience. Many of these authors
would likely be willing to “zoom” with your group for a short Q&A after your
discussion which really adds to the meeting and generates larger participation
(in my experience).

I also recommend that you choose a book that is easily available from your
public library system and is available as an eBook and audio-book. Large print
is super helpful too.

Good luck!

I am working with a local Jewish assisted living & nursing home facility to
develop a book club for residents (and possibly their families).
We'd like to start with a light, easy to read book with Jewish content but one
that will be accessible to non-Jewish residents also.

I love suggestions of books that would meet that criteria.

[ha-Safran] New Jewish Fiction Presentations Available

2020-11-20 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Dear Colleagues & Friends,

I wanted to let you know that I have two presentations that I recently prepared
for the American Jewish University's B'Yachad Together program: Lost (and
Found) in Translation: New Israeli Literature in
English and Recommended Reads: New & Award-Winning Jewish
Fiction. I would be happy to present these on Zoom to your library, synagogue,
organization, or school community. They would be perfect for Jewish Book Month
and to give readers recommendations for the long winter days ahead. I have
given similar presentations for Hadassah, the Women's League for Conservative
Judaism, AJL, and other organizations, and they are always very well received.
I am constantly updating my presentations to include the newest books. I can be
available during the day, evenings, or on Sundays. My bio. is below and I would
be happy to provide references. Please reach out to me if you would like to
discuss further.

[ha-Safran] Recommended Reads: New & Award-Winning Jewish Fiction

2020-10-28 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Dear Friends,

I will be presenting on new and award-winning Jewish fiction for the American
Jewish University "B'Yachad Together"
Program on Tuesday, November 17 at 2:00pm PT/4:00pm CT/5:00pm ET.

Recommended Reads: New & Award-Winning Jewish Fiction
Learn all about the new and award winning Jewish fiction titles that you should
have on your to-read list right now.
Synagogue librarian and book club facilitator Rachel Kamin will cover literary
fiction and genre fiction, buzz-worthy names in Jewish literature and the
lesser gems that you may have missed, the best books for discussion groups, and
notable forthcoming titles.
Bring your thoughts and opinions about the books you've read recently for a
lively audience discussion, too!

Some of the books I'm discussing were included in the AJL Fiction Award
Committee's presentation at the 2020 Digital Conference this summer but I'll
also review newer titles too. I would love to see some familiar faces on my
screen (but no pressure since there is a registration cost!)
https://www.aju.edu/whizin-center-continuing-education/events/Recommended-Reads-New--Award-Winning-Jewish-Fiction

Also note that Nicole Krauss will discuss her new collection of short stories,
To Be a Man, on Thursday, November 5 at 12pm PT/2:00pm CT/3:00 pm ET (free of
charge).
https://www.aju.edu/byachad-together/events/Nicole-Krauss-Discusses-Her-New-Release-To-Be-a-Man

PT/4:00pm CT/5:00pm ET.

[ha-Safran] Lost (and Found) in Translation: New Israeli Literature in English

2020-10-07 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Dear Friends,

I will be presenting on new Israeli literature in translation for the American
Jewish University "B'Yachad Together"
Program on Wednesday, October 14 at 2:30pm PT/4:30pm CT.
Lost (and Found) in Translation: New Israeli Literature in English
It's an established fact in the literary world that Americans just aren't that
motivated to read fiction in translation. Only three percent of all books
published in the United States each year are in translation but the small
number of books being translated from Hebrew has been steadily increasing.
We'll discuss some of these new books that are now available to those of us who
aren't quite fluent enough to read them in their original Hebrew as well as
trends in Israeli literature and books written in English by native Hebrew
speakers.
This is an updated version of the presentation that I gave at the 2019 AJL
Conference in Woodland Hills. I would love to see some familiar faces on my
screen (but no pressure since there is a registration cost!)
To sign-up, go to
https://www.aju.edu/byachad-together/events/Lost-and-Found-in-Translation-New-Israeli-Literature-in-English.
Note: The deadline to register is Thursday 10/8, after which a late fee applies.

Shoshanah,

This is an author of young adult books about a real school assignment having
students debate the final solution. Two teens refused to do the assignment and
wanted it cancelled. That is the basis for Weimer's novel, and she's a dynamic
speaker. For those of who serve young adults, especially so many who have had
to deal with antisemitism, this presentation will be helpful.

[ha-Safran] Books for preschoolers about starting school, wearing masks, etc.

2020-07-17 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
At this point the synagogue preschool is planning to open in the fall. The
director would like me to create some storytime videos to send out to the
families beforehand particularly about the virus, masks, starting school,
anxiety, etc. I found What is COVID-19 by Alexis Roumanis and Germs Are Not
For Sharing by Elizabeth Verdick on Hoopla through my local public library as
well as Keep It Clean: Germ Free! by Cecilia Minden and Clean Hands, Dirty
Hands by Joann Cleland (plus some cute videos) on
Epic. But I haven't found anything for preschoolers
on wearing a mask and/or wearing a mask to school. Please let me know if you
have any recommendations - eBooks or videos are preferred. Also, are there any
Jewish books that would tie-in with these lessons?

Many thanks!

2020-04-23 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
Last year Heidi Rabinowitz and Chava Pinchuk put together this comprehensive
list of all Holocaust titles recognized by the Sydney Taylor Book Award
Committee. It is available in the AJL Bibliography Bank:
http://databases.jewishlibraries.org/sites/default/files/bibliography-bank/stba_holocaust_books_0.pdf

My personal recommendations to you would be White Bird by RJ Palacio, the 2020
Sydney Taylor Award Winner. I would also recommend My Chocolate Year, Yellow
Star, The Journey that Saved Curious George, Hana’s Suitcase, and When the
Soldiers Were Gone since they are all shorter than typical middle grade novels.
You might also want to look at the short story collection Mara’s Stories by
Gary Schmidt.

Good luck!

In each update we will highlight information to help you make your conference

The 2020 AJL Conference will be held at the Hilton Orrington, a 4-star hotel
in the heart of downtown Evanston, a block away from the Northwestern
University campus. The conference rate is $159/night (plus taxes and fees).
Click
here
to reserve a room. After you select the dates you want, click on "MORE
OPTIONS" and then on "Add Special Rate Codes." Enter the code AJL20 in the box
marked "Group Code." To reserve by phone, call 1-800-HILTONS referencing "AJL
Annual Conference, Chicago Vicinity June 2020" to receive the group rate. The
cut-off date for this rate is Friday, June 5.

* Our Conference will kick off with lunch and a keynote address on
Monday, June 29 at 12:00pm. However, we encourage you to attend the ALA
Conference the day before which is taking place in downtown Chicago (more
information will be forthcoming). There will be some committee meetings on
Monday morning as well as the Newcomer's Welcome at 10:30am. Registration will
open at 8:30am and the Exhibit Hall will open at 11am.

* The Conference will conclude with lunch and the annual Feinstein
Lecture on Wednesday, July 1, 12:15-1:45pm. Optional tours will be offered on
Wednesday afternoon, departing from the Orrington at 2pm. Stay tuned for more
information and plan to extend your stay.

* The full conference Early Bird Rate for AJL members is $450 (by April
30). This includes all conference sessions and meals (lunch on Monday;
breakfast, lunch & dinner on Tuesday; and breakfast & lunch on Wednesday). Per
diem and other special rates will also be available.

* We received more than 70 presentation proposals on a wide range of
topics related to various aspects of librarianship, Judaism, the Jewish
experience and Israel that will be relevant to library professionals working in
academic and research institutions, archives, synagogues, day schools, and
Jewish community centers as well as public schools and libraries serving Jewish
communities. Acceptance letters will be going out the first week of February.
Twenty-eight sessions will be offered - it's going to be a great conference!

* Several special programs during the conference are being planned,
including an author showcase at the Evanston Public
Library (right across the street from the hotel) on
Monday, June 29 at 7:00pm. Plus, invitations have been extended to the
award-winning authors of the AJL Fiction Award and the Sydney Taylor Book
Awards.

In the coming weeks and months, we will be posting additional information about
registration, travel, vendors, tours, session details, volunteer opportunities
and more. The 2020 AJL Conference promises to be innovative, exciting, and
interesting plus it's always "Cooler by the Lake"!

IN CELEBRATION OF 70TH ANNIVERSARY
NORTH SUBURBAN SYNAGOGUE BETH EL PUBLISHES NEW HISTORY BOOK

[cid:image003.jpg@01D48027.3BD6CDC0]HIGHLAND PARK, IL (November 14, 2018)
-Tradition by the Lake: A Historical Outline of North Suburban Synagogue Beth
El by Morton M. Steinberg was published in November 2018 and distributed to
over 600 guests at the gala celebration honoring Rabbi Vernon and Bryna Kurtz
and the 70th anniversary of the synagogue. With over 200 pages of text and more
than 70 photographs and archival documents, Tradition by the Lake details the
founding and growth of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El into one of the leading
Conservative congregations in the United States. The book relates the
challenges, difficulties and conflicts encountered throughout the synagogue's
history, but also describes its amazing accomplishments, achievements and
successes.

Mort Steinberg's life-long affiliation with North Suburban Synagogue Beth El
began in the synagogue's first nursery school class and continued through
Hebrew High School. He later served as secretary and then as president of the
congregation. More recently, he has been the synagogue's historian and
archivist and continues as a member of its Board of Trustees. "The story of how
our synagogue grew from small parlor meetings in Glencoe during and after World
War II to a community of over 1,100 families, and sparked the growth of an
extended Jewish presence on Chicago's North Shore, is a story that we are very
proud of," Steinberg notes.

Tradition by the Lake is available for $18 in the synagogue's Sisterhood Gift
Shop or can be purchased online from
Amazon.com.

Re: [ha-Safran] Younger Borrowers

2018-10-21 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
I’m struggling to fathom why any school, synagogue or community center library
that maintains a circulating children’s collection would create obstacles that
would prevent children from checking out books. Why do you need an OK from a
responsible adult? My children check out library books from their public
school library and I have never been asked to provide consent. It is part of
the curriculum. I would doubt that day school librarians require parental
consent to use the school library. I’m not sure why a supplemental Hebrew
School ay a synagogue (or JCC) should be viewed any differently.

As I wrote to Lee privately, children at our synagogue begin checking out books
from the Library starting with the 3-year-old preschool classes and continuing
with all of the religious school classes PK-7th grade. At the beginning of the
school year we enter all of the students into our system. We also send home a
letter to the parents, letting them know their children will be checking out
books, explaining the library program, and inviting them to visit with their
children to check out even more books. During the 2017-2018 school year,
religious school students checked out 540 items and our preschool students
checked out 911 items. Over 98% were returned before the summer. Close to
1500 hundred Jewish books went into Jewish homes – this is what we are all
about. I consider the loss of a couple dozen books each year the cost of doing
business. Moreover, most of the missing books are eventually found or
returned. (I also look at it as natural weeding!).

I really discourage you from creating lots of rules and policies. It will just
make more work for you and make the library less inviting, less accessible, and
less used!

Feel free to contact me if anyone has any questions or wants to discuss
further. I am also happy to share our circulation policies.

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Younger Borrowers

Per my earlier note to this list (copied below) I promised to summarize
responses I received. I heard from three colleagues, reporting their
experience and opinions about adding younger borrowers to our temple library's
lending service.

The responses were unanimous that we needed the ok of a responsible adult for
accountability.

Regarding a cut-off age for lending, their as a wide range of opinion. One
library allows children as young as preschoolers to borrow books, while the
others suggested 13 as the minimum age. In retrospect, I can see how libraries
might differ on such points depending on their circumstances. Since our library
is unstaffed most hours and we use a self-check system, we cannot expect
younger children to manage the process on their own.

Next, I plan to bring our proposal to the Temple school staff to initiate the
process.

Thanks for the help.

I'm seeking the "wisdom of crowds" in order to plan how to expand lending
privileges to young adults in our congregation. Currently only adult members
are enrolled in our online borrowing system but we've reached a point that we
feel we can expand the borrower base to include young adults. I have no
experience with school or children's libraries and am hoping members of the
list can answer some questions and/or share insights about points I've missed.

- Do we need adult sign-on a) for permission to add minors to the lending
system and/or
b) to establish responsibility for
items borrowed?

- How do you determine eligibility? Hebrew high students? Post-B'nai
Mitzvah? Anyone over 13?

Any other considerations?

I should mention here that our lending system uses email address as the key
field. This means that each enrolled member must furnish a unique email
address. Young adults would need to provide their own email address to be
added to the system with their own account, or they could borrow items on their
parents' accounts. In other words, not enrolling them separately does not deny
them access to the collection. But they have more autonomy if they have their
own account.

Last, I plan to confer with the rabbi and staff who oversee the Temple school
to coordinate this initiative. I hope to hold an introductory class session in
the library as part of the enrollment process. But I'd like to have a plan –
one that benefits from this list's collective experience – before broaching the
topic.

I appreciate whatever you are
