Ann,

Thank you for everything that you did for the New England chapter over the
years, for keeping the group together, running our yearly meetings, and for
running our conference in Cambridge. It's been great working with you over the
years. I hope you enjoy the next stage of your working life. Looking forward to
run into you at some concerts.

Dear safranim,

I wanted to share the news with you that after 39 years, I've decided to retire
as the Librarian of Temple Israel, Boston, on June 21, 2024.

(I know - some of you are thinking -- wait, didn't she retire already? That's
ok if you're thinking that - you're not alone! )

As you can imagine, this is a mixed decision for me, as I have loved my job,
and everything that came with it. I have been very fortunate to have had this
fun, enriching, purposeful career, and you were an important part of why it
was so fun, enriching and purposeful! And, often, you made me look very good
when I needed help with a research request and you came to the rescue!

And, it is time to move on.

And in response to the question I often get, "So, what are you going to do,
now?"

I've also been fortunate in that I've been teaching English to adult immigrants
and other English learners for six years, and will teach full-time, starting in
the fall. I have loved this work - especially the students - and it's been a
gift to learn a new skill at this time of life. So, although I'll greatly miss
my work as a librarian, I feel lucky to have a fairly soft landing as
retirements go.

I want to say thank you to all of you for your many years of collegiality, and
wonderful times at conferences! I have learned so much from you, and, as a
solo librarian like many of us are, I never felt alone with AJL in the wings.

And, for anyone in the Boston area, if you're interested in coming to a Friday
night service on June 21 where I'll have the opportunity to thank the
congregation for this wonderful career, please let me know and I'll send you
the details. (It will also be zoomed).

Wishing you all a Shabbat filled with Shalom,

Ann

Norm's books should be in every Judaica library. As the lovely obit says, he
filled in lots of the gaps in Jewish history (especially Jewish) for older
children and teens. I hadn't heard about his book on Cahan and the Forward, but
now I'm very much looking forward to it.

He attended at least a few of our conferences over the years. I think he was a

I want to repeat Ann Abrams comment that Norman was a mensch.

Norman had been a librarian in the Brookline public school system and for 38
years taught at the Prozdor high school program at Hebrew College. He also
worked and taught at Camp Yavneh in the summers.

At Prozdor Norman taught courses on Jewish history. One of his most popular
courses was on Jewish criminals.

Norman used the Hebrew College Library extensively for researching his many
books. He was also one of the Prozdor teachers who insisted that his classes
learn how to use the library and make use of it for their studies.

I enjoyed kibbitzing with Norman. He always had a story and a smile. His books
covered a wide range of topics, things he was curious about. I also frequently
ran into him and his wife Rosalind at movies, concerts, and lectures. The last
time I had seen him he had told me about the two books he had in the press, on
the Yiddish Forward editor Abe Cahan, and a history of antisemitism. I had just
recently heard from his brother-in-law that he was exploring ideas for his next
book.

Although I haven't been in touch with Norm for many years, I have many fond

In the late 1980's, when I was looking around the Boston area for people to
help me figure out what kind of software product to purchase to automate my
library's collection, Norm graciously invited me to his school library, and
demonstrated the program he was using. (I ended up choosing that product, and
was, and still am, very happy with it.)

In 2006, when the New England Chapter of AJL (NEAJL) hosted AJL's annual
conference in Cambridge, Norm was on the planning committee and it was an
honor and a pleasure to work with him.

2023-07-12 Thread Sukenic, Harvey via Hasafran
Dan Cohen, Vice Provost for Information Collaboration, Dean of the Libraries,
at Northeastern University, who was the keynote speaker at the AJL Conference
in Boston in 2018, wrote an article in the Atlantic in 2019 that got a lot of
attention, "The Books of College Libraries Are Turning Into Wallpaper". He
argued that print circulation in academic libraries throughout the country was
crashing.
I don't know if that is the same for synagogue and temple libraries.
I know that is the case for the Hebrew College Library. We went from
circulating about 15,000 books a year in Brookline in the 1980's down to about
600 print books circulated this past fiscal year.
It was hard justifying keeping the print collection that we had when it was not
being used.

This is happening to my temple library too. We have sold our current building
and are renting it back for 3 years, but the outer building where the library
filled two rooms with over 7,000 volumes has been unavailable to us from the
time of the sale. The books are all packed in boxes and stored in the attic of

Michelle,

I don't know the ReSourceMate catalog program. Is there a way you can remove
the catalog records of the books you are not keeping in a batch process, and
not have to do so one by one? Are there barcodes on the books that you can scan
into a file and then upload them to the library system to delete those records?

Hebrew College moved to a new campus in January, a smaller campus. We went from
what had been a few years ago a 90,000-volume library down to about 14,000
volumes. Preparing for the move we had selected the books we are keeping by
putting colored stickers on the books.
I hired some teenagers scan the barcodes for those books we had selected to
keep into a number of files, and I changed the holding records for the books we
are keeping to a new collection in the library system using a batch program. I
was then going to delete all of the remaining records in the old collection
with another batch program.
During the move we were told by the movers that we had packed more books than
we had room for. I knew that beforehand but was told we could bring them over
to the new building and deal with weeding more out later. We had no space in
the new building to store the books so the last two days of the move we were
told we had to pull out an additional 4-5000 books. Those included books that
had the holding records already changed to the new collection.
I am now in the processing of scanning again all of the barcodes of the books
that we kept for the library and again changing the holding records to our new
collection. I will then use a batch process to remove the 50-60,000 records
from catalog that are in the old collection that are no longer here. By the end
of the summer, I should be finished.

I totally agree with you, Emily, and really appreciate all the effort that you
put into getting Heidi, and thus AJL, onto the ALA Ethnic and Multicultural
Information Exchange Round Table session, “EMIERT Chair’s Program Promoting
Multicultural Library Services in Virtual Spaces,” which took place this
morning at ALA Virtual.

All three participants, Heidi; K.C. Boyd, Library Media Specialist at Jefferson
Academy in the Washington, DC Public School system; and Andrea Jamison,
Librarian and Lecturer at Valparaiso University (Indiana) and
Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect of EMIERT, articulated their jobs, patron base,
collections, charges, and challenges really well. While representing “just”
two ethnic communities (on the surface), Jewish and African-American, they
demonstrated the diversity and multiculturalism of both and how meaningful
their work and the resources that they highlighted are. What they do is
beneficial to all of their users, internal and external. Andrea, while serving
as the moderator, contributed much to the discussion, not only with her
questions but contributions to the conversation. A really good session.

And Heidi proved once again why she is not only a Jewish kidlit meyven, but so
knowledgeable way beyond her “bailiwick!”

Great job! Yasher-koyekh and kol ha-kavod on your fabulous presentation,
Heidi, and Emily for making sure it happened!

See you all next week!

I just watched Heidi present with K.C. Boyd at the EMIERT Chair's Program

their website, so I will send the link so everyone can see it.

How did this happen? I pushed to be on the EMIERT Program Committee. The
Chair's Program was already set and was to be a very theoretical program about
ethnic materials. When everything changed, the in-person program wouldn't work
online, and the committee had to come up with a new program quickly, I
suggested Heidi to join a DC school librarian to talk about this topic, and we
are so lucky she agreed.

I can't tell you how happy I am with how the program turned out. It really
brought out the diversity of materials to have speakers from such different
backgrounds.

Thank you, Heidi, for stepping up and preparing for this program on short
notice that will reach a broad audience. You are a superstar.

Thanks. And thanks to OPALS. I didn't realize that was an option in OPALS. I
just checked and found the 586 drop-down list. This will save time in the
future.

We don’t subscribe to the Index to Hebrew Periodicals but you can see the
description of the Index on their website:
https://lib.haifa.ac.il/systems/ihp/index.php/en/about-eng It’s a
“bibliographic indexing project covering articles from Hebrew periodicals and
monographs” from 1977 on.

Given the price we have it installed on one computer in the library. We keep
the USB with our reference CD-Roms and DVDS and have patrons check out the USB

Shalom amazing safranim,

How do small libraries handle the Bar Ilan Judaic Library on USB?

Do you keep it on one computer only, or do you allow it to circulate?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Re: [ha-Safran] Upcoming retirement

2019-12-21 Thread Sukenic, Harvey via Hasafran
While I've personally sent my wishes to Jim, I want to thank him for a few more
things. I first met Jim when I started as a grad student in Jewish history at
Brandeis 42 years ago. He was always helpful in my years of grad school with
his amazing bibliographic knowledge. I worked for 2 years in his office as a
grad student quick cataloging Hebrew books and he was a great teacher and
supervisor. Jim, along with Ann Abrams, has been the main force behind the
annual meetings of the New England Jewish Librarians. I worked on two Boston
AJL conferences with Jim and his attentions to details is amazing. He has
always been willing to provide advice when I've sought his advice on issues at
the Hebrew College Library. He most recently agreed to be a consultant as
Hebrew College plans for a library of the future when we move to a new building
in a few years. I will try not to cut too much into his retirement reading time

Dear friends and colleagues -- I will be retiring after 43 years at Brandeis.
Monday will be my last day at work. I've enjoyed my years of involvement with
