Re: [ha-Safran] FW: ALA resolution boycotting companies working with IDF

2015-01-28 Thread Joe Easterly
Putting the resolution's merits/lack-thereof aside, the resolution itself is
politically toxic to everyone, no matter where you stand. Passing the
resolution will foster divisiveness in the library community, and instill fear
and uncertainty, which can only weaken us. It's chilling.

It also puts academic libraries at odds with the upper administration of our
universities. The association of American universities passed a statement
condemning academic boycotts. The president of the University of Rochester
issued a statement saying that the University is against the boycotts.

The resolution not only affects how we see ourselves as a library community, it
can damage the reputation of libraries within their organizations. The
resolution doesn't just offend librarians, it offends our provosts, deans,
presidents, boards of trustees, and donors.

It is not only evil and hateful, it's also a fools errand.

2015-01-28 Thread Toby Harris
In my mind, this goes against the values of core librarianship which ALA
states. I like many of the points raised in the “fact sheet” opposing the
resolution. I don’t support ALA politicizing – I don’t look to them or
maintain my membership to get political information or be told what I should
and shouldn’t support politically. I look to them for professionalism. This
is antithetical to their mission. I also agree that it is narishkeit (thank
you, Yaffa) to single out Israel but I would avoid use of the term “hateful
bigotry” when speaking up as it takes the argument in a different direction –
another discussion altogether. Thank you, Emily, and others going to ALA who
will speak up on our behalf!

Dear Yaffa,

I have received you mail from Elhanan Adler, who proposed that you might assist.

It was brought to our attention that in the coming ALA (winter) the attached
resolution would be adopted by ALA council.

1. Are you aware of this initiative? I found no mentioning of such
resolution, and I don't know if this is a real thing or not.

2. Does ALA take such resolution and if so in what forum?

3. If so, how can we help prevent such resolution? Who can help? What is

4.Can AJL assist in such effort?

2015-01-28 Thread Weisman, Yaffa
Hi all,
First, I am encouraged by the outpour of support from AJL members, mostly
unfamiliar to me, who stepped out of the shadows and made helpful suggestions.
This is incredible, and I only regret having to spend so much energy on
responding to bullies and detractors, instead of investing in programs.
Second, I think it's time to stop perfecting the document - I put it together
in a short time, incorporated some earlier amendments, and now I say, Dayeinu.
Let's focus on reaching out to our allies at ALA and to its officers, as well
as to friends outside ALA who can give us some good points.
So to all of you who plan to attend the ALA Council meeting - thanks for
putting yourselves in the line of fire. Sometimes just showing up is enough,
sometimes pushing back is necessary.
And finally, to all of you who responded with support and suggestions - I hope
you plan to attend our conference in DC this year. If you do, please grab my
proverbial buttohole and introduce yourselves. I can't wait to meet you
thank you

What is
required?

4.Can AJL assist in such effort?

Thank you in advance,

2015-01-27 Thread Emily Bergman
For what it's worth, this is not an academic boycott, per se; it's a
divestment of stocks in three companies that do business with Israel. That
is what I'm working on putting together a statement for. My first thought
was why not all the other countries that commit genocide and war crimes,
but if there are no companies with stocks that ALA owns, it doesn't help my
argument. Emily

Re: [ha-Safran] FW: ALA resolution boycotting companies working with IDF

2015-01-27 Thread Weisman, Yaffa
Emily, and all who are partnering in the effort to end this “narishkeit”
(a.k.a. “foolishness”) at this point:
Here is a statement I composed that I believe should be presented to the ALA
Council. Feel free to use it, replicate and distribute it as needed. I will try
to create & scan it on AJL stationary & send it around.
Thanks for doing it:

THE ASSOCIATION OF JEWISH LIBRARIES’ STATEMENT REGARDING THE PROPOSED RESOLUTION
“On ALA Divestment from Caterpillar, Hewlett-Packard, and Motorola Solutions”

The Association of Jewish Libraries is an international professional
organization that fosters access to information and research in all forms of
media relating to all things Jewish. The Association promotes Jewish literacy
and scholarship and provides a community for peer support and professional
development.
The AJL is an affiliate of ALA and stands firm in its opposition to any attempt
to politicize the ALA through bigoted and hateful targeting of the State of
Israel and its citizens, through veiled threats against any American company
doing business in Israel. The AJL also condemns the blatant censorship
exercised by the Council by scheduling this meeting on the Sabbath, thus
effectively denying the rights of observant Jewish members of ALA to
participate in this discussion.
The AJL believes that the mantel of “broad social responsibilities,” is crucial
to the spirit of ALA, and therefore should be applied responsibly and equally
to address issues such as religious freedom, genocide, terrorism, denial of
equal rights and free speech to women and LGBT citizens– all practiced by many
Arab countries BUT NOT BY THE DEMOCRATIC STATE OF ISRAEL!

AJL membership is a rainbow of political convictions vis-à-vis Israel, but we
firmly believe that Israel’s right to exist is not debatable, and that the work
of our colleagues in Israel promotes professional librarianship, literacy and
innovation, coexistence and peace. We proudly stand by our tradition of
pursuing justice and seeking peace, and respectfully ask the Council to reject
the divestment resolution before it.

Dr. Yaffa Weisman, President,
And the Executive Board of the Association of Jewish Libraries.

Elliot & Shoshana, and any other AJL member who has a voice in ALA – is it
too late to submit an AJL sponsored statement to ALA’s Council? How does one do

This is not new(s) and I suggest we highlight the hypocrisy of signaling out of
Israel as opposed to countries and terrorist organizations who commit genocide

anti-Semitism to politicize a professional organization. We should also mention
that scheduling such meetings on the Sabbath is offensive to Jewish members of

AJL membership is a rainbow of political convictions vis-à-vis Israel (Thank

I hope we all in AJL affirm Israel's right to exist and flourish. But I do
not see anything in this resolution that denies that right. What do others
see in this resolution that denies Israel's right to exist?

Re: [ha-Safran] FW: ALA resolution boycotting companies working with IDF

2015-01-27 Thread Clare Kinberg
I should make clear I think AJL should oppose the boycott resolution, just
not on the grounds that it denies Israel's right to exist. Personally, I
oppose this resolution because this kind of thing makes us Jews circle the
wagons, which in turn prolongs the untenable situation. Israel should NOT
be singled out for crimes committed by so many other much more brutal
regimes. The resolution can be opposed on those grounds. But we Jews need
to become much more resolute to end the occupation.

This was sent to me from Elhanan Adler via Yaniv Levi of NLI. Both the
pending resolution and the case against it are attached. So it is a real
attempt in real time.

Elliot & Shoshana, and any other AJL member who has a voice in ALA – is it

This is not new(s) and I suggest we highlight the hypocrisy of signaling out

Dear Yaffa,

I have received you mail from Elhanan Adler, who proposed that you might

It was brought to our attention that in the coming ALA (winter) the attached
resolution would be adopted by ALA council.

1. Are you aware of this initiative? I found no mentioning of such

2. Does ALA take such resolution and if so in what forum?

3. If so, how can we help prevent such resolution? Who can help? What
is required?

4.Can AJL assist in such effort?

Thank you in advance,

[ha-Safran] FW: ALA resolution boycotting companies working with IDF

2015-01-27 Thread Weisman, Yaffa
This was sent to me from Elhanan Adler via Yaniv Levi of NLI. Both the pending
resolution and the case against it are attached. So it is a real attempt in
real time.
Elliot & Shoshana, and any other AJL member who has a voice in ALA - is it
too late to submit an AJL sponsored statement to ALA's Council? How does one do
it? I can write a short one but I need to know which ALA body has the authority
to publish it.
This is not new(s) and I suggest we highlight the hypocrisy of signaling out of
Israel as opposed to countries and terrorist organizations who commit genocide
& war crimes (Nigeria, Hamas, Sudan, etc.), and using anti-Zionism and
anti-Semitism to politicize a professional organization. We should also mention
that scheduling such meetings on the Sabbath is offensive to Jewish members of
ALA and is a de-facto act of censorship.
AJL membership is a rainbow of political convictions vis-à-vis Israel (Thank
God!), but I am sure we can all agree that Israel's right to exist is not
debatable, and that the work of our colleagues in Israel promotes coexistence
and peace and shouldn't be reviled and railroaded by ALA.

Subject: ALA resolution boycotting companies working with IDF

What is
required?

4.Can AJL assist in such effort?

Thank you in advance,

Yaniv
