Greek Philosophy is Stolen Egyptian Philosophy by George G. M. James, Ph.D. University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff Introduction (Characteristics of Greek Philosophy) The term Greek philosophy, to begin with is a misnomer, for there is no such philosophy in existence. The ancient Egyptians had developed a very complex religious system, called the Mysteries, which was also the first system of salvation. As such, it regarded the human body as a prison house of the soul, which could be liberated from its bodily impediments, through the disciplines of the Arts and Sciences, and advanced from the level of a mortal to that of a God. This was the notion of the summum bonum or greatest good, to which all men must aspire, and it also became the basis of all ethical concepts. The Egyptian Mystery System was also a Secret Order, and membership was gained by initiation and a pledge to secrecy. The teaching was graded and delivered orally to the Neophyte; and under these circumstances of secrecy, the Egyptians developed secret systems of writing and teaching, and forbade their Initiates from writing what they had learnt. After nearly five thousand years of prohibition against the Greeks, they were permitted to enter Egypt for the purpose of their education. First through the Persian invasion and secondly through the invasion of Alexander the Great. From the sixth century B.C. therefore to the death of Aristotle (322 B.C.) the Greeks made the best of their chance to learn all they could about Egyptian culture; most students received instructions directly from the Egyptian Priests, but after the invasion by Alexander the Great, the Royal temples and libraries were plundered and pillaged, and Aristotle’s school converted the library at Alexandria into a research centre. There is no wonder then, that the production of the unusually large number of books ascribed to Aristotle has proved a physical impossibility, for any single man within a life time. The history of Aristotle’s life, has done him far more harm than good, since it carefully avoids any statement relating to his visit to Egypt, either on his own account or in company with Alexander the Great, when he invaded Egypt. This silence of history at once throws doubt upon the life and achievements of Aristotle. He is said to have spent twenty years under the tutorship of Plato, who is regarded as a Philosopher, yet he graduated as the greatest of Scientists of Antiquity. Two questions might be asked: (a) how could Plato teach Aristotle what he himself did not know?; and (b) why should Aristotle spend twenty years under a teacher from whom he could learn nothing? This bit of history sounds incredible. Again, in order to avoid suspicion over the extraordinary number of books ascribed to Aristotle, history tells us that Alexander the Great, gave him a large sum of money to get the books. Here again the history sounds incredible, and three statements must here be made. (a) In order to purchase books on science, they must have been in circulation so as to enable Aristotle to secure them. (b) If the books were in circulation before Aristotle purchased them, and since he is not supposed to have visited Egypt at all, then the books in question must have been circulated among Greek philosophers. (c) If circulated among Greek philosophers, then we would expect the subject matter of such books to have been known before Aristotle’s time, and consequently he could not be credited either with producing them or introducing new ideas of science. Another point of considerable interest to be accounted for was the attitude of the Athenian government towards this so-called Greek philosophy, which it regarded as foreign in origin and treated it accordingly. Only a brief study of history is necessary to show that Greek philosophers were undesirable citizens, who throughout the period of their investigations were victims of relentless persecution, at the hands of the Athenian government. Anaxagoras was imprisoned and exiled; Socrates was executed; Plato was sold into slavery and Aristotle was indicted and exiled; while the earliest of them all, Pythagoras, was expelled from Croton in Italy. Can we imagine the Greeks making such an about turn, as to claim the very teachings which they had at first persecuted and openly rejected? Certainly, they knew they were usurping what they had never produced, and as we enter step by step into our study the greater do we discover evidence which leads us to the conclusion that Greek philosophers were not the authors of Greek philosophy, but the Egyptian Priests and Hierophants. Aristotle died in 322 B.C. not many years after he had been aided by Alexander the Great to secure the largest quantity of scientific books from the Royal Libraries and Temples of Egypt. The Qur'an is the only non-Jewish scripture in the world where Jews have been honored and protected in so many verses (2:40, 2:47-52, 2:57-58, 5:20, 5:44, 10:47, 10:90-93, 14:6, 17:2-3, 20:47-52, 20:77-80, 44:30-32, 45:16, etc.), good Jews have been praised and they have also been offered salvation if they follow the true teachings of Moses (2:62, 2:121-122, 3:113-115, 3:199, 5:12, 5:65-66, 5:69, 29:46, etc.). The Qur'an is the only non-Christian scripture in the world where Jesus and Mary have been honored with very high respect (3:42-55, 5:44-46, 5:110, 43:59, Chapter 19 on Mary, etc.), good Christians have been praised and they have also been offered salvation if they follow the true teachings of Jesus (2:62, 2:121-122, 3:113-115, 3:199, 5:65-66, 5:69, 5:82, 29:46, etc.). Unlike Bible that prescribes death penalty for idolatry and polytheism (Deuteronomy 17:3-5, 13:6-16; 2 Chronicles 15:13; Ephesians 5:5; Revelation 21:8; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Exodus 20:4-5; etc.), the Qur'an doesn't have any temporal punishment for the same (22:17, 6:107-8, 22:67-69, 17:84, 49:11). The Qur'an teaches that the pre-Qur'anic people will be judged according to their own deeds and actions (2:134, 10:47, 35:24, 16:36, 40:78, 4:164, 17:15, 62:5, 5:44, 20:133-4, etc.). The Qur'an is the only religious Book that strongly condemns female infanticide and killing children because of poverty (16:58-59, 81:8-9, 6:137, 6:140, 6:151, 17:31). The Qur'an teaches in various ways to free the slaves that come into possession as a result of war (90:12-13, 9:60, 5:89, 2:177, 4:3, 4:25, 4:92, 24:33, 58:3, 8:67, 47:4, etc.). The Qur'an strongly condemns terrorism and oppression (4:75, 22:39-40, 9:13-14, 42:39-43, 38:28, 2:190-193). Journey to eternity... An Arab Religion, Right? By Nichole Arel Often I find myself reflecting upon how blessed I am. The life that I lead now is a world away from the one I expected to lead just a year ago: my first thoughts upon waking in the morning, my imagined path in life, and especially my heart and soul. I would never have dreamt that in less than a year my life would take such unexpected turns. Not only that. The path I now take has led me to roads I never knew existed. Indeed where you start your journey is in no way indicative of where you end up. As a child, I longed to be taken to church. The feeling of community and worship held my mind in fascination. I longed for the feeling of drawing close to God even before I could formulate such thoughts in my own mind. Something incomprehensible held my young soul in awe, so much so that I made a habit of waking my father every Sunday by begging him to take me to church. Unfortunately my family was much like average American Christians, content to call themselves religious based on their twice-yearly attendance to Catholic Mass: on Christmas and Easter Sunday. Thus I grew accustomed to hearing the phrase, not today, maybe next week. Dejectedly, I would sulk back into my room and wait for next Sunday to arrive, only to repeat the disappointing process all over again. It was an insistent nagging that never left me alone no matter what I did to drown it out. As I grew older, I learned to stop asking since my attempts had all been in vain. I became content to spend all my free time in solitude reading, usually books on world cultures and religions. As I learned more about the history of my religion, Catholicism, I was repulsed by its condemnation of questioning the doctrine. Surely this cannot be the right sect of Christianity, I thought. Time ticked by and still I had not found the religion that seemed to speak to my heart. Perhaps I was expecting to find something to stir the same feelings that I felt as a child in church, although I knew this was a naïve wish. The alienation from religion occurs only when one begins to understand religions' claims and contradictions. I couldn't wrap my mind around the claim of the Trinity no matter how hard I tried. I couldn't understand how I was supposed to believe in concepts that were incomprehensible. I was angry that reason was assumed to have no place in Christianity and the act of questioning doctrine was considered a sign of weak faith. What then could be the reason God gave man the ability to rationalize? Eventually I gave up altogether and assumed that I would never find the truth. I was resigned to believe that there was a God but that humans would never be able to know God's nature or the true religion for man until we met Him one day. I lived many years with this belief until very recently when it seemed that something inexplicable was urging me back to my quest for the truth. This urge was almost a voice but not in the normal sense. It was an insistent nagging that never left me alone no matter what I did to drown it out. So naturally I bought a Bible to read, thinking that the truth must be hidden between the pages. Maybe I just missed it all those years ago. This was closer to the truth than I could ever have guessed. But Islam had to be an Arab religion, right? During my reading of the Bible I happened to be obsessed with the current events of the world. I found myself spending all my free time alternating between writing letters to my government's officials pleading for the rights of the Palestinians and the Sudanese as well as against wars that are so commonplace around the globe, and reading about sects of Christianity. I planned on volunteering in Palestine if I could gather the money to travel there. Naturally, given the turmoil in the region and my travel plans, it seemed necessary to read about Islam and understand the faith of the people that I yearned to help. I was enthralled by what I read about the Muslim faith. The concept of One God not a trinity, the reverence for all of the prophets which I found lacking in the Bible, the scientific aspects of the Qur'an, the all-encompassing facets of Islam, the respect for mothers, the sanctity of family. This was the only religion that I had ever happened upon which made sense to a rational mind yet was still filled with the mystery of God. But Islam had to be an Arab religion, right? It can't be the faith that young American women gravitate to, can it? I soon discovered that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, that the majority of Muslims are not Arab, and that some of the most rapid growth of Islam in the West is among my demographic group of young white women. This is the biggest misconception in Islam, no doubt resulting from the constant stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. Politics in so called Muslim countries may or may not have any Islamic basis. Often dictators and politicians will use the name of Islam for their own purposes. One should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means 'submission to God' and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'. Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion doesn’t dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered a 'way of life' for Muslims and they make no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Like Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock. NOWHERE DOES ISLAM ENJOIN THE KILLING OF INNOCENTS... The Qur'an says: Fight in the cause of God against those who fight against you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors. (2:190) If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things. (8:61) War, therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the rigorous conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term 'jihad' literally means 'struggle'. Muslims believe that there are two kinds of jihad. The other 'jihad' is the inner struggle of the soul which everyone wages against egotistic desires for the sake of attaining inner peace. 2. Islam oppresses women! The image of the typical Muslim woman wearing the veil and forced to stay home and forbidden to drive is all too common in most peoples’ thoughts. Although some Muslim countries may have laws that oppress women, this should not be seen as coming from Islam. Many of these countries do not rule by any kind of Shari'ah (Islamic law) and introduce their own cultural standpoints on the issue of gender equity. Islam on the other hand gives men and women different roles and equity between the two is laid down in the Qur’an and the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Islam sees a woman, whether single or married, as an individual in her own right, with the right to own and dispose of her property and earnings. A marriage gift is given by the groom to the bride for her own personal use, and she keeps her own family name rather than taking her husband's. Both men and women are expected to dress in a way which is modest and dignified. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: The most perfect in faith amongst believers is he who is best in manner and kindest to his wife. Violence of any kind towards women and forcing them against their will for anything is not allowed (4:19). A Muslim marriage is a simple, legal agreement in which either partner is free to include conditions. Marriage customs thus vary widely from country to country. Divorce is not common, although it is acceptable as a last resort. According to Islam, a Muslim girl cannot be forced to marry against her will: her parents simply suggest young men they think may be suitable. 3. Muslims worship a different God! Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. Allah for Muslims is the greatest and most inclusive of the Names of God, it is an Arabic word of rich meaning, denoting the one and only God and ascribing no partners to Him. It is exactly the same word which the Jews, in Hebrew, use for God (Eloh), the word which Jesus Christ used in Aramaic when he prayed to God. God has an identical name in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Allah is the same God worshiped by Muslims, Christians and Jews. Muslims believe that Allah's sovereignty is to be acknowledged in worship and in the pledge to obey His teaching and commandments, conveyed through His messengers and prophets who were sent at various times and in many places throughout history. 4. I was missing something in life, but I did not know what it was. I wore myself out and had no fear of life or death. Especially death was never on my mind. In my mind, life was forever. I wasn’t aware that my life could end at any moment. And what would happen if I died was never on my mind. I never knew at that time how lucky I was. I had a loving family and a good life. At the age of 15 my parents didn’t know what to do with me. There was nothing stopping me. The only one who could stop this self-destruction was me. One time my aunt, that hadn’t seen me for 5 years, was shocked to see what I’ve become. She had a chat with me to try to change my behavior. I acted as if I was listening to her just to get her away from me as soon as possible. But there was one thing I did catch and it struck me. She said, “I will not and cannot change you, because society has nothing to say against you and your behavior. All of the things you’re doing are being promoted. You are the only one who can change yourself and you should only do it for yourself. You deserve it.” Such simple words and logic seemed very odd to hear. After she left I cried my heart out. I was hurting myself without knowing it. This was the moment I knew I had to change my life. The only problem was I didn’t know where to begin. I noticed I started talking to God in my room before going to bed. That was strange, because I’ve always lived a life where God wasn’t on my mind. This must be what people call ‘fitrah’. I asked for guidance, signs, peace of mind, a major change and a meaning in life. There was this girl in my history class who was a Christian. She never openly talked about her religion, but she always wore a cross. I knew other religious people at my school and they were mostly very disciplined and satisfied with their lives. I used to make fun of them with my friends. But to think of it, I was secretly jealous of them. The name of the Christian girl was Laura. I asked her about God and about Christianity. She told me that God loves me and that I should accept Jesus as my savior and to acknowledge that he is the son of God. We had many debates about Christianity. About the many sects of it, about that there are so many versions of the Bible and about the divinity of Jesus (pbuh). My heart and mind told me God exists, but it was not okay for me that he has a son. I could also not believe that Jesus (pbuh) died for my sins. My sins are for me to bear and for no one else. And I also did not believe in the concept of original sin. Every time I looked at a baby, so beautiful, so pure, my mind just tells me that it couldn’t be true. She told me to read the Bible and she said that she had the latest version. This was already an indication that it was nothing for me. But I did try to read the Bible. The ‘according to Luke etc.’ bits did not feel good to me. It reminded me of gossips. If someone told me a gossip, I could never say it the same to another person. Eventually there were many different versions of a gossip. The original formation of the Bible also didn’t feel good. Some Gospels weren’t even chosen to be in the Bible. I wondered why. There were also too many contradictions and the Trinity was unexplainable. Faith wasn’t enough for me. Eventually I decided that Christianity was a very beautiful religion, but incomplete. I also wondered that if Jesus (pbuh) was here in this time and saw the Christians of today, would he approve them? Or have they gone so astray from his original and pure message, God is one? The prayers are prayed fives times in the mosque in congregations everywhere. Ramadan is loved and practiced by millions who choose to live as temporary ascetics and the Hajj is still the Hajj of old. The basic bedrock of the faith remains. This is the great miracle in this age that a religion born out of a time so utterly different, but does not make comprises whatsoever. Every other corrupted religion is making comprises giving into the pressures of this age. Just recently the Dalai Lama mentioned that maybe Buddhism isn't against homosexuality after all and how Christians seem to invent new forms of worship every year. Our beautiful ummah is the last bastion of authentic monotheism and upright religion. And anybody from a different religious faith who really knows what religion is all about rather than just turning it into a woolly minded social service will have nothing but respect for us, s/he might disagree with us, but s/he knows that we still see things as they are. If the world shouts down to us, we do not change. Aberration is not of us. We are the only one who continues to uphold a complete sacred beautiful vision of life amidst the shouting meaningless of late modernity and the shallowness of consumer, advising, nihilism that is the modern human condition and THAT IS WHY OUR SHIP IS GOING TO PULL THROUGH THESE STORMY WATERS. Everybody else (all forms of religions in the modern era) have given in and let too much water in and are now forced to aboard our ship sooner or later because we're all that's left. Only we have that radiant figure of the centre of our faith, a Prophet who is the perfect role model and an untainted revelation still accessible to the masses. All this should lead us to extraordinary gratefulness to Allah and give us hope despite this changing world in a time where everybody else has given up basically and gone with the secular preoccupation and priorities of the modern world, we continue to be on the straight path. The world’s leading Scholars, thinkers and politicians, have not yet; come up with a one Single most definition of terrorism or terrorist which will be acceptable to all. So far, whoever has defined terrorism; it is either politically motivated or religiously biased. Therefore we are not able to develop common consciences over this crucial issue. The matter even gets more complex when each country, state, Nation or a group of Individuals, start creating their own definition according to their need. If this latest trend, continues and the world peace loving majority did not come to a common ground on this issue, than those people who are charged with political religious zealous will keep their tunnel vision, focused only on very few terrorist organizations namely Al-Qaeda few alike, while hundreds of other terrorist groups (including few States nations) will continue their barbaric activities under our noses, in the name of survival, self-defense, law and order, civil disobedience etc etc. Therefore, we the common people, of this planet have the responsibility to identify and fight against all every evil, without any discrimination or personnel biased. Having said that, I would like to present you, with my understanding of this menace: “Any one, who deliberately, in his right state of mind, causes harm to another, life or lives (Human and or Animal) and property(s) without any legal or Moral Justification, supported by the local (country, state) and or international law, in my humble opinion, is a terrorist and whatever, comes out, as a result, of his action, is Terrorism”. By, “anyone” I mean, single or a group of individuals, country, State or Nation and when I say “harm”, it could be anything from a simple injury, harassment and vandalism to a killing, massacre and mass destruction as well as psychological, social and financial trauma to others. After this explanation, it is not so hard to figure out that Terrorism is not a new invention of 21st century, but existed throughout human history. However, most of us start hearing about this, only after the unfortunate incident of 9/11. Even though, in the late 20th century we would hear sporadically, about terrorist activities but with the growth of electronic media, especially the Internet, news are spreading in the world within matter of seconds, compare to days even months in the past. Here are few examples, of past, recent past and present, terrorists terrorism: 1. Long before Islam Christianity, Egyptian pharaoh expelled thousands of Jewish, Children, women, Elderly to Sinai dessert where they lived for forty years. Even though considering the nature of Jews (not Jewish or Israelis), who might have created some problem for the King but no matter what, punishing the entire Nation for the mistake of only few, is not an excuse. 2. Destruction (1st) of the Salomon’s temple, a national heritage of Jewish, by Nebuchadnezzar and subsequent exile of Israelites, from their homeland, is another example of an act of terrorism. However keep in mind, none of these people, mentioned in 1 2 were Muslims or Christians, but rather worshipers of kings, Queens or multiple other gods like today’s Hindus in India. 3. Similarly, second third time destruction, of the Salomon’s temple by the Greeks Romans respectively, who were either Zoroastrians or some other types of Polytheists. 4. The entire world especially, Muslim Christian, cannot forget the atrocity of the “crusaders” who slaughtered hundreds of thousand, Muslims, their children, females elderly in a cold blood. These people, just like Yazeed, were the followers of a Peaceful religion but this time, it was Christianity. 5. Who can ever forget the world’s most infamous terrorists namely Hitler Stalin, who killed millions of innocent people elsewhere, including in their respective countries. Interestingly, both were born Christian; however Stalin, in his adulthood became a communist. 6. Who is the inventor of Atomic bomb? Of course a JEW, Albert Einstein, who used his God given brain and knowledge to produce an evil, for the destruction of his own race and Civilization? 7. Now, who were those, who bombed the Hiroshima Nagasaki with the Atom bomb, killing thousands of innocent Japanese, destroying their, buildings, livestock, plantations and the rest is well known to all of us? Why Islam? From Dr. Laurence B. Brown to all seekers of truth Let's talk frankly. Almost never do non-Muslims study Islam until they have first exhausted the religions of their exposure. Only after they have grown dissatisfied with the religions familiar to them, meaning Judaism, Christianity and all the fashionable -isms - Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism (and, as my young daughter once added, tourism) - do they consider Islam. Perhaps other religions do not answer the big questions of life, such as Who made us? and Why are we here? Perhaps other religions do not reconcile the injustices of life with a fair and just Creator. Perhaps we find hypocrisy in the clergy, untenable tenets of faith in the canon, or corruption in the scripture. Whatever the reason, we perceive shortcomings in the religions of our exposure, and look elsewhere. And the ultimate elsewhere is Islam. Now, Muslims would not like to hear me say that Islam is the ultimate elsewhere. But it is. Despite the fact that Muslims comprise one-fourth to one-fifth of the world's population, non-Muslim media smears Islam with such horrible slanders that few non-Muslims view the religion in a positive light. Hence, it is normally the last religion seekers investigate. Another problem is that by the time non-Muslims examine Islam, other religions have typically heightened their skepticism: If every God-given scripture we have ever seen is corrupt, how can the Islamic scripture be different? If charlatans have manipulated religions to suit their desires, how can we imagine the same not to have happened with Islam? The answer can be given in a few lines, but takes books to explain. The short answer is this: There is a God. He is fair and just, and He wants us to achieve the reward of paradise. However, God has placed us in this worldly life as a test, to weed out the worthy from the unworthy. And we will be lost if left to our own devices. Why? Because we don't know what He wants from us. We can't navigate the twists and turns of this life without His guidance, and hence, He has given us guidance in the form of revelation. Sure, previous religions have been corrupted, and that is why we have a chain of revelation. Ask yourself: why would God send another revelation if the preceding scriptures were still pure? Only if preceding scriptures were corrupted would God need to send another revelation, to keep mankind on the straight path of His design. So we should expect preceding scriptures to be corrupted, and we should expect the final revelation to be pure and unadulterated. If impure, it too is due to be replaced, for we cannot imagine a loving God leaving us astray. What we can imagine is God giving us a scripture, and men corrupting it; God giving us another scripture, and men corrupting it again … and again, and again. Until God sends a final revelation He promises to preserve until the end of time. Muslims consider this final revelation to be the Holy Qur'an. You consider it … worth looking into. So let us return to the title of this article: Why Islam? Why should we believe that Islam is the religion of rruth, the religion that possesses the pure and final revelation? Oh, just trust me. Now, how many times have you heard that line? A famous comedian used to joke that people of different cities cuss one another out in different ways. In Chicago, they cuss a person out this way, in Los Angeles they cuss a person out that way, but in New York they just say, Trust me. So don't trust me - trust our Creator. Read the Qur'an; read books and study this website. But whatever you do, get started, take it seriously, and pray for our Creator to guide you. At the very least, he is the undisputed father of modern optics, or so we are told at school where our textbooks abound with his famous experiments with lenses and prisms, his study of the nature of light and its reflection, and the refraction and decomposition of light into the colours of the rainbow. Yet, the truth is rather greyer; and I feel it important to point out that, certainly in the field of optics, Newton himself stood on the shoulders of a giant who lived 700 years earlier. For, without doubt, another great physicist, who is worthy of ranking up alongside Newton, is a scientist born in AD 965 in what is now Iraq who went by the name of al-Hassan Ibn al-Haytham. Most people in the West will never have even heard of him. As a physicist myself, I am quite in awe of this man's contribution to my field, but I was fortunate enough to have recently been given the opportunity to dig a little into his life and work through my recent filming of a three-part BBC Four series on medieval Islamic scientists. Modern methods Popular accounts of the history of science typically suggest that no major scientific advances took place in between the ancient Greeks and the European Renaissance. But just because Western Europe languished in the Dark Ages, does not mean there was stagnation elsewhere. Indeed, the period between the 9th and 13th Centuries marked the Golden Age of Arabic science. Great advances were made in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, physics, chemistry and philosophy. Among the many geniuses of that period Ibn al-Haytham stands taller than all the others. Ibn al-Haytham is regarded as the father of the modern scientific method. As commonly defined, this is the approach to investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge, based on the gathering of data through observation and measurement, followed by the formulation and testing of hypotheses to explain the data. This is how we do science today and is why I put my trust in the advances that have been made in science. But it is often still claimed that the modern scientific method was not established until the early 17th Century by Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes. There is no doubt in my mind, however, that Ibn al-Haytham arrived there first. In fact, with his emphasis on experimental data and reproducibility of results, he is often referred to as the world's first true scientist. Understanding light He was the first scientist to give a correct account of how we see objects. He proved experimentally, for instance, that the so-called emission theory (which stated that light from our eyes shines upon the objects we see), which was believed by great thinkers such as Plato, Euclid and Ptolemy, was wrong and established the modern idea that we see because light enters our eyes. What he also did that no other scientist had tried before was to use mathematics to describe and prove this process. So he can be regarded as the very first theoretical physicist, too. He is perhaps best known for his invention of the pinhole camera and should be credited with the discovery of the laws of refraction. He also carried out the first experiments on the dispersion of light into its constituent colours and studied shadows, rainbows and eclipses; and by observing the way sunlight diffracted through the atmosphere, he was able to work out a rather good estimate for the height of the atmosphere, which he found to be around 100km. Enforced study In common with many modern scholars, Ibn-al Haytham badly needed the time and isolation to focus on writing his many treatises, including his great work on optics. An unwelcome opportunity was granted him, however, when he was imprisoned in Egypt between 1011 and 1021, having failed a task set him by a caliph in Cairo to help solve the problem of regulating the flooding of the Nile. While still in Basra, Ibn al-Haytham had claimed that the Nile's autumn flood waters could be held by a system of dykes and canals, thereby preserved as reservoirs until the summer's droughts. But on arrival in Cairo, he soon realised that his scheme was utterly impractical from an engineering perspective. Yet rather than admit his mistake to the dangerous and murderous caliph, Ibn-al Haytham instead decided to feign madness as a way to escape punishment. This promptly led to him being placed under house arrest, thereby granting him 10 years of seclusion in which to work. Planetary motion He was only released after the caliph's death. How do you link the movement against Hindutva with the wider human rights movement in India? A: Hindutva, as I see it, is the modern form of Brahminism. I believe that Brahminism and fascism share much in common, and just as the philosophy of fascism is based on the negation of human rights, so, too, is the philosophy of Brahminism. In fact, Brahminism is a philosophy based on the gross violation of the fundamental rights of entire social groups - women, Shudras, Dalits and tribals, as well as groups such as Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and Sikhs, who, when added up, form the vast majority of the Indian population. The violation of the rights of so many millions of people because of the caste system upon which the Brahminical religion is based is as important a concern for us as the violation of rights by individuals or the state. Unfortunately, not many groups in India today, even within the human rights movement, are giving due importance to this societal violation of human rights. Fascism is a major source of human rights' violations the world over. It has its own philosophy which takes different forms and adopts different methods in different contexts, but the philosophy remains the same. M.N. Siddiqi, Ph.D. Intolerance is on the increase in the world today, causing death, genocide, violence, religious persecution as well as confrontations on different levels. Some times it is racial and ethnic, some times it is religious and ideological, other times it is political and social. In every situation it is evil and painful. How can we solve the problem of intolerance? How can we assert our own beliefs and positions without being intolerant to others? How can we bring tolerance into the world today? I would like to discuss some of these issues from an Islamic point of view. What is tolerance? Literally the word tolerance means to bear. As a concept it means respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of the world's cultures, forms of expression and ways of being human. In Arabic it is called Tasamuh. There are also other words that give similar meanings, such as Hilm (forbearance) or '`Afu (pardon, forgiveness) or Safh (overlooking, disregarding). In the Persian and Urdu languages, we use the word rawadari which comes from rawa meaning acceptable or bearable and dashtan meaning to hold. Thus it means to hold something acceptable or bearable. Tolerance is a basic principle of Islam. It is a religious moral duty. It does not mean concession, condescension or indulgence. It does not mean lack of principles, or lack of seriousness about one's principles. Sometimes it is said, people are tolerant of things that they do not care about. But this is not the case in Islam. Tolerance according to Islam does not mean that we believe that all religions are the same. It does not mean that we do not believe in the supremacy of Islam over other faiths and ideologies. It does not mean that we do not convey the message of Islam to others and do not wish them to become Muslims. The UNESCO principles on tolerance say: Consistent with respect for human rights, the practice of tolerance does not mean toleration of social injustice or the abandonment or weakening of one's convictions. It means that one is free to adhere to one's own convictions and accepts that others adhere to theirs. It means accepting the fact that human beings, naturally diverse in their appearance, situation, speech, behavior and values, have the right to live in peace and to be as they are. It also means that one's views are not to be imposed on others. Tolerance comes from our recognition of: 1. The dignity of the human beings, 2. The basic equality of all human beings, 3. Universal human rights, and 4. Fundamental freedom of thought, conscience and belief. The Qur'an speaks about the basic dignity of all human beings. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke about the equality of all human beings, regardless of their race, color, language or ethnic background. Shari`ah recognizes the rights of all people to life, property, family, honor and conscience. Islam emphasizes the establishment of equality and justice, both of these values cannot be established without some degree of tolerance. Islam recognized from the very beginning the principle of freedom of belief or freedom of religion. It said very clearly that it is not allowed to have any coercion in the matters of faith and belief. The Qur'an says, There is no compulsion in religion. (Al-Baqarah: 256) If in the matters of religion, coercion is not permissible, then by implication one can say that in other matters of cultures and other worldly practices it is also not acceptable. In Surat Ash-Shura Allah says to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, If then they turn away, We have not sent you as a guard over them. Your duty is but to convey (the Message)… (Ash-Shura: 48) In another place Allah says, Invite (all) to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious. Your Lord knows best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance. (An-Nahl:125) Further, Allah says to the Believers, Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and beware (of evil): if you do turn back, know then that it is Our Messenger's duty to proclaim (the Message) in the clearest manner. (Al-Ma'idah: 92) One can also cite Allah's words: Say: 'Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger: but if you turn away, he is only responsible for the duty placed on him and you for that placed on you. If you obey him, you shall be on right guidance. The Messenger's duty is only to preach the clear (Message).(An-Nur:54) All these verses give note that Muslims do not coerce people; they must present the message to them in the most cogent and clear way, invite them to the truth and do their best in presenting and conveying the message of God to humanity, but it is up to people to accept or not to accept. While staying in a European society, I express my joy and jubiliation, that the people living in these societies do not change their religion nor do they deviate from their faith for the sake of economic, political or social temptations nor do they rush to embrace any religion, unless it works as a strong incentive and an effective factor to open up their hearts and generate spiritual tranquillity. Otherwise, they remain contented with infidelity and apostasy. Here then, if one pauses to consider, one will come to the conclusion that my own act, or for that matter, the act of any individual in the European society, of embracing Islam does not imply earning economic profits or attaining social advantages. The matter is rather the other way round. Firstly, we, the peoples of the European society, attach no importance to religious matters. However, if there is anyone from among the European society who cares for religion, the aim of such a one is nothing but to find God. As such, my own interest in Islam meant nothing but search for the Truth and the direction of right thinking. A desire of search for the Truth arose in my heart. A longing to find the Truth crept into my self. This was when I saw that many doubts and misgivings had been growing and rising in my imagination and memory about the Christian beliefs and its fundamentals. At the same time, the capacity of Christianity fell short of providing resistance and protection against those doubts and misgivings. Christianity used to press that all its tenets be admitted without proof and argument. To cite an example, my heart is not inclined to accept the Christian belief that Glorious Almighty God sent Prophet Jesus Christ for the whole world as an expiator of the sins of all the slaves of God. It also did not appeal to me that the entire humanity was sullied with various colours of sins including disobedience, and all the sins of the slaves of God were forgiven, following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. I also felt that God Himself inevitably possesses full power to save His slaves and to keep them away from committing sins and crimes. I also felt that He has all the might to forgive, on His own, the sins of His slaves without any explanation being necessary. Thus, Glorious God does not need any explanation to forgive the sins of His slaves. Even so, I felt that the belief of making the Prophets a ransom for the sins of the entire humanity is tantamount and similar (God forbid) to imputing motives of wrong-doing and injustice to All-Mighty God. On the other hand, man may commit sins and crimes without any hesitation and hitch. Whenever I expressed these doubts to any Christian scholar or priest, he advised me to banish from my mind these doubts and instigated me to accept those beliefs of Christianity, without any reservation. They strongly pressed me to give up the idea that they are not convincing, so that these doubts and views may not grow nor flourish in my mind. The desire to search for the Truth had been constantly growing till I arrived at a very critical juncture which denies all faith and (revealed) laws. In those days I had the opportunity to come across a religious and capable Muslim who, inspite of being charmed by the glamour of European culture and civilization, used to take pride in stating that he was a Muslim. He affirmed that, through the blessings of Islam, he enjoyed contentment of the heart and mental tranquillity. On the other hand, a feeling of weirdness and disgust against the name of religion had got hold of my heart. This assertion of his filled my heart with a sense of astonishment and I was drowned in a sea of thought: Is there a religion which provides heart's contentment and mental peace to those who profess and follow it? This idea induced me to acquire knowledge about Islam and its disciplines. Now I claim by dint of my studies that Islam is the immortal religion of Allah which has the ability to elate the hearts of those who submit to it. This was usually the first reaction I encountered when my former classmates, friends and co-pastors saw me after having embraced Islam. I suppose I couldn't blame them, I was a highly unlikely the person to change religions. Formerly, I was a professor, pastor, church planter and missionary. If anyone was a radical fundamentalist it was I. I had just graduated with my Master's Degree of Divinity from an elite seminary five months before. It was after that time I met a lady who had worked in Saudi Arabia and had embraced Islam. Of course, I asked her about the treatment of women in Islam. I was shocked at her answer, it wasn't what I expected, so I proceeded to ask other questions relating to God and Muhammad [may the blessing and mercy of God be upon him]. She informed me that she would take me to the Islamic Center where they would be better able to answer my questions. Being prayed up, meaning-asking Jesus for protection against demon spirits, seeing that what we had been taught about Islam is that it is Demonic and Satanic religion. Having taught Evangelism, I was quite shocked at their approach, it was direct and straightforward. No intimidation, no harassment, no psychological manipulation, no subliminal influence! None of this, Let's have a Quranic study in your house, like a counter part of the Bible study. I couldn’t believe it! They gave me some books and told me if I had some questions they were available to answer them in the office. That night I read all of the books they gave. It was the first time I had ever read a book about Islam written by a Muslim, we had studied and read books about Islam only written by Christians. The next day I spent three hours at the office asking questions. This went on everyday for a week, by which time I had read twelve books and knew why Muslims are the hardest people in the world to convert to Christianity. Why? Because there is nothing to offer them!! (In Islam) There is a relationship with God, forgiveness of sins, salvation and promise of Eternal Life. Naturally, my first question centered on the deity of God. Who is this God that the Muslims worship? We had been taught as Christians that this is another god, a false god, when, in fact, He is the Omniscient-All Knowing, Omnipotent-All Powerful, and Omnipresent-All Present God - The One and Only without co-partners or co-equal. It is interesting to note that there were bishops during the first three hundred years of the Church that were teaching as the Muslim believes, that Jesus [may the blessing and mercy of God be upon him] was a prophet and teacher!! It was only after the conversion of Emperor Constantine that he was the one to call and introduce the doctrine of the Trinity. He, a convert to Christianity who knew nothing of this religion, introduced a paganistic concept that goes back to Babylonian times. Space, however, does not permit me to go into detail about the subject, but God willing, we will another time. Only, I must point out that the word TRINITY is not found in the Bible in any of its many translation nor is it found in the original Greek or Hebrew languages! My other important question centered on Muhammad [may the blessing and mercy of God be upon him]. Who is this Muhammad? I found out that Muslims do not pray to him like the Christians pray to Jesus. He is not an intermediary and in fact it is forbidden to pray to him. We ask blessing upon him at the end of our prayer but likewise we ask blessings on Abraham. He is a Prophet and a Messenger, the final and last Prophet. In fact, until now, one thousand four hundred and eighteen years (1,418) later there has been no prophet after him. His message is for All Mankind, as opposed to the message of Jesus or Moses (peace be upon them both) which was sent to the Jews. Hear O Israel But the message is the same message of God. The Lord Your God is One God and you shall have no other gods before Me. (Mark 12:29) Because prayer was a very important part of my Christian life I was both interested and curious to know what the Muslims were praying. As Christians we were as ignorant on this aspect of Muslim belief as on the other aspects. We thought and were taught, that the Muslims were bowing down to the Kaaba (in Mecca), that that was there god and center point of this false deity. Again, I was shocked to learn that the manner of prayer is prescribed by God, Himself. The words of the prayer are one of praise and exaltation. The approach to prayer (ablution or washing) in cleanliness is under the direction of God. My Story: How I Came to Islaam Shariffa Carlo The story of how I reverted to al-Islam is a story of plans. I made plans; the group I was with made plans, and Allah made plans. And Allah is the Best of Planners. When I was a teenager, I came to the attention of a group of people with a very sinister agenda. They were and probably still are a loose association of individuals who work in government positions but have a special agenda - to destroy Islam. It is not a governmental group that I am aware of, they simply use their positions in the US government to advance their cause. One member of this group approached me because he saw that I was articulate, motivated and very much the women's rights advocate. He told me that if I studied International Relations with an emphasis in the Middle East, he would guarantee me a job at the American Embassy in Egypt. He wanted me to eventually go there to use my position in the country to talk to Muslim women and encourage the fledgling women's rights movement. I thought this was a great idea. I had seen the Muslim women on TV; I knew they were a poor oppressed group, and I wanted to lead them to the light of 20th century freedom. With this intention, I went to college and began my education. I studied Quran, hadith and Islamic history. I also studied the ways I could use this information. I learned how to twist the words to say what I wanted them to say. It was a valuable tool. Once I started learning, however, I began to be intrigued by this message. It made sense. That was very scary. Therefore, in order to counteract this effect, I began to take classes in Christianity. I chose to take classes with this one professor on campus because he had a good reputation and he had a Ph.D. in Theology from Harvard University. I felt I was in good hands. I was, but not for the reasons I thought. It turns out that this professor was a Unitarian Christian. He did not believe in the trinity or the divinity of Jesus. In actuality, he believed that Jesus was a prophet. He proceeded to prove this by taking the Bible from its sources in Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic and show where they were changed. As he did this, he showed the historical events which shaped and followed these changes. By the time I finished this class, my deen had been destroyed, but I was still not ready to accept Islam. As time went on, I continued to study, for myself and for my future career. This took about three years. In this time, I would question Muslims about their beliefs. One of the individuals I questioned was a Muslim brother with the MSA. Alhamdulllah, he saw my interest in the deen, and made it a personal effort to educate me about Islam. May Allah increase his reward. He would give me dawaa at every opportunity which presented itself. One day, this man contacts me, and he tells me about a group of Muslims who were visiting in town. He wanted me to meet them. I agreed. I went to meet with them after ishaa prayer. I was led to a room with at least 20 men in it. They all made space for me to sit, and I was placed face to face with an elderly Pakistani gentleman. Mashallah, this brother was a very knowledgeable man in matters of Christianity. He and I discussed and argued the varying parts of the Bible and the Quran until the fajr. At this point, after having listened to this wise man tell me what I already knew, based on the class I had taken in Christianity, he did what no other individual had ever done. He invited me to become a Muslim. In the three years I had been searching and researching, no one had ever invited me. I had been taught, argued with and even insulted, but never invited. May Allah guide us all. So when he invited me, it clicked. I realized this was the time. I knew it was the truth, and I had to make a decision. Alhamdulillah, Allah opened my heart, and I said, Yes. I want to be a Muslim. With that, the man led me in the shahadah - in English and in Arabic. I swear by Allah that when I took the shahadah, I felt the strangest sensation. I felt as if a huge, physical weight had just been lifted off my chest; I gasped for breath as if I were breathing for the first time in my life. However, he reminded Muslims of their big responsibility in spreading the message of Islam among others. Hamoud Al-Shimimry of the Islamic Education Foundation also highlighted the importance of dawa work. During the times of Abu Bakr, slavery was a deep rooted institution, and was a conspicuous feature of Makkah. Most of the Quraish were slave owners and thus in the society of Makkah there was a considerable sprinkling of slaves. These slaves were the victims of exploitation, and were treated in an inhuman way by their masters. Many of the slaves were attracted by Islam, for in its teachings lay a charter of freedom for the distressed humanity. Islam preached the cult of equality. It stipulated that all persons were the slaves of God, and no person could be the slave of another person. When many slaves accepted Islam, the slave owners of Makkah felt much concerned, and considered such conversions as a threat to their economic interests. Persecution of the slaves. Of all the persons who became Muslims, the slaves were the most vulnerable. These men of the Quraish who were converted to Islam continued to enjoy the protection of their respective tribes. The slaves enjoyed no such protection. In order to arrest the progress of Islam among the slaves, the Quraish accordingly resorted to a campaign of persecution and torture against the slaves who professed to be Muslims. Bilal. Bilal, an Abyssinian who later became the 'Muadhdhin' of Islam was a slave of Umayyah bin Khalaf. Bilal accepted Islam and thereupon his master subjected him to great torture. Umayyah would make Bilal lie down on the burning sand, and would place a huge block of stone on his chest. Umayyah would then ask Bilal to give up Islam, or he would be tortured to death Umayyah would, sometimes tie a rope round the neck of Bilal, and had him dragged in the streets. Sometimes Bilal was made to put on steel armor, and stand in the hot sun for hours. In spite of these tortures and threats, Bilal remained firm and steadfast in his faith in Islam. The condition of Bilal excited the pity of Abu Bakr. He purchased him from his master and set him free. Abu Fakih. Abu Fakih was a slave of Safwan bin Umayyah. Abu Fakih accepted Islam, and when Safwan came to know that Abu Fakih had become a Muslim, he subjected him to great torture. He would bind him with a rope, and drag him on the burning sand. Abu Fakih was asked to worship the idols, but he said that he would worship Allah alone. His master put a very heavy stone on his chest which brought out his tongue. In spite of these persecutions, the faith of Abu Fakih in Islam did not waver. When Abu Bakr came to know of the pitiable condition of Abu Fakih, he purchased him from his master and set him free. Lubaynah. Lubaynah was a slave girl of Umar. She accepted Islam, and Umar who had not accepted Islam by that time would beat her mercilessly until he was tired. He would then say, I have only stopped beating you, because I am tired. She would say. May God treat you in the same way. He asked her to renounce Islam, but she stuck to her faith. When Abu Bakr came to know of her sad state, he paid for her, and set her free. Al Nahdiah. Al Nahdiah and her daughter who became Muslims were the slaves of a lady of Bani Abdul Dar. Their mistress subjected them to great torture when she came to know that they had accepted Islam. Abu Bakr remonstrated with the lady at the treatment she meted out to her slaves. The mistress said, You have corrupted them; you may free them if you are so sympathetic to them. Abu Bakr paid the price asked for, and liberated the women. Umm Ubays and Zinnira. Abu Bakr also liberated two women slaves, Umm Ubays and Zinnira. Abu Jahl beat Zinnira on her conversion to Islam to such an extent that she lost her eye sight. When she lost her eye sight the Quraish said that she had lost her sight because of the curse of Al Lat and Al Uzzah. She was asked to recant, but she remained steadfast in her faith in Islam. She prayed to God, and miraculously her eye sight was restored. Abu Bakr paid for these women and set them free. Slaves liberated by Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr purchased the freedom of eight slaves-four men and four women. The men were Bilal, Abu Fakih, Ammar, and Abu Fuhayra. The women were: Lubaynah, Nabdiya, Umm Ubays, and Zinnira. Abu Bakr's father's reaction to the liberation of slaves. Most of the slaves liberated by Abu Bakr were either women or old and frail men. The father of Abu Bakr said to him, Son, I hear you are freeing old and weak persons; why don't you free healthy and strong persons who could be a source of strength to you? Abu Bakr replied that he was freeing the slaves for the sake of God, and not for his own sake. Divine approval. He left no suicide note, and the meaning of his final words is still the subject of conjecture. But in a time when Christians and Muslims in Europe lurch from one crisis to the next, the poetry-quoting, retired Lutheran minister is being proclaimed a self-martyr ââ¬â the latest victim in a growing conflict between the cross and the crescent. What's sad is that many people are so quick to believe that he killed himself to protest Islam. They want to believe it, said Bishop Christoph Kaehler, who leads the German Protestant Church in the eastern Thuringia state, which includes historic Erfurt, where the 16th-century Reformation trailblazer Martin Luther took his first religious vows. Weisselberg has become a magnet for fears and suspicions about Muslims, Kaehler said. It's an unfortunate lesson in how tense things have become. Germany has felt that uneasiness in many ways recently. Last month, a Turkish-born lawmaker sought protection from death threats after calling Islamic head scarves a symbol of oppression of women. In Berlin, an opera company has become Europe's latest freedom of expression flash point. A planned production of Mozart's Idomeneo outraged Muslims with a scene depicting the severed heads of the Prophet Muhammad along with other religious figures including Jesus and Buddha. A morning service was under way for Reformation Day, the anniversary of Luther's famous 95 Theses, which helped inspire the Protestant break from Rome. Police say Weisselberg cut through a gap between a hedgerow and a metal fence circling a construction pit for a new library ââ¬â on a site where more than 250 people died during Allied air strikes near the end of World War II. Weisselberg pulled out a canister of gasoline hidden under his coat. An instant later, he was ablaze. Witnesses told authorities he cried two words: Jesus and Oskar ââ¬â considered a reference to the Rev. Oskar Bruesewitz, who set himself on fire in 1976 as an apparent protest against the communist East German regime. Weisselberg died the following day. No formal suicide note was found. But his widow ââ¬â who has refused to speak publicly ââ¬â told a church official that her husband left behind a letter describing his angst over Islam's rising power in Europe. Within hours, Weisselberg's story was being told and retold as an act of self-martyrdom. Anti-Muslim groups across Europe have exalted his name. What makes Muslims believe that the Quran is not written by Prophet Muhammad? Does the Quran claim that it is from God? Could the Prophet have copied some portions of the Bible? Are there scientific facts in the Quran? Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad is not the author of the Quran. God is its Author. The following points bear the fact: 1. First of all, the Quran itself, at a number of places and in different ways, says that it is a Revelation from God (Quran 56:77-80; 53:4; 20:4; 36:5; 45:2; 32:2; 26:192-4; 16:102; 14:1; etc.). One of the claims runs thus: This is indeed a Quran most honourable, a Book well-guarded...a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds. (Quran 56:77-80) (Here, one ought to know the features of the Quran to understand the claim better. For instance, if the Quran had consisted of a number of books, and each book was made up of a number of chapters, then each of the books had to claim that it was from God in order to render the WHOLE volume as coming from God. But, this is fortunately not so with the Quran. The Quran is just ONE Book made up of 114 chapters. So, if the Quran claims, in any of its chapters, that the Book is from God, then the WHOLE Quran is from God. Yet, the Quran does not make the divine claim only once, but several times in different phrases and in different chapters.) 2. The Prophet was unlettered. However, even if he was educated and had written the Quran, how could he be bold enough to make this statement: Do they not consider (ponder over) the Quran (with care)? Had it been from other than God, they would surely have found therein discrepancies. (4:82) Abdullah Yusuf Ali, commenting on this verse (verse 4:82) in his English translation of the Quran, says: From a mere human point of view, we should have expected much discrepancy, because (1) Prophet Muhammad who promulgated it was not a learned man or philosopher, (2) it was promulgated at various times and in various circumstances, and (3) it is addressed to all grades of mankind. Yet, when properly understood, its various pieces fit together better than a jigsaw puzzle even when arranged without any regard to chronological order. There was just the One Inspirer and one inspired. 3. If the Prophet had written the Quran - a Book par excellence - surely he would have claimed credit for it, but he did not. He could not claim what was not his. Indeed God says: This Quran is not such as can be produced by anyone other than God. (10:37) 4. The Quran took 23 years to complete. Had the verses of the Quran (which contains more than 6,000 verses) been written by the Prophet, he would have needed a number of drafts and the work would have needed editing, updating, etc. But this did not happen, yet the information is consistent throughout the Quran. The verses were taken down as dictated by the Prophet only once and no redrafting, editing or updating took place after that. 5. At a number of stages during the 23-year period, challenges to reproduce, even a chapter of the Quran, were made. If the Prophet had written the Quran, he would not have made the challenges, for fear that the learned Arabs and eminent poets of his time would have taken up his challenges and shamed him. One of the challenges goes thus: And if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed (from time to time) to Our servant (Muhammad), then produce a chapter like thereunto... (2:23) 6. The Quran says that the Prophet was not learned (62:2; 7:157-158). So, if the Prophet was educated in some institution but mentioned in the Quran that he wasn't, he would have been accused of being a liar and his mission would have fallen through. 7. Even if the Prophet was learned, how could he have written such an inimitable Book of Information and Wisdom without resorting to consultation with prominent scholars and the best books from the best libraries in the world?! If he did this, it would surely have been known, since every move he made was known to people. The Prophet was a historical figure, not a mythological figure. 8. The Prophet was the busiest and most active person in history. So, how could he have found the time to write (even if he were educated) such a comprehensive and extensive Book of Guidance which would have needed years of seclusion and concentration to complete? 9. In the Quran, in Chapter 111, it is mentioned that Abu Lahab, one of the Prophet's uncles who was always against Islam, would never accept Islam. This Revelation came some ten years before the death of Abu Lahab. How could the Prophet have dared to write this chapter because all he (Abu Lahab) needed to do to prove that the Quran was not the Words of God, was to accept Islam dishonestly? 10. The Arabic word Islam means submission and derives from a word meaning peace. The Quran proclaims in verse 3:19 The only religion approved by GOD is Submission. (Islam) - In a religious context it means complete submission to the will of GOD and anyone who does so is called a Muslim, If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to GOD) it will never be accepted of Him (Quran 3:85) Jesus told his followers just like the prophets that had come before him that they should surrender their will to the will of GOD; (which is Islam) and GOD warned them to stay away from the false Gods of human imagination. The banner of Christianity was little more than a potent symbol, a rallying cry to bless the more secular urges of powerful Europeans. In fact, the particular religion of the natives never figured highly in the West's imperial push across the globe. Europe may have spoken upliftingly about bringing Christian values to the natives, but the patent goal was to establish colonial outposts as sources of wealth for the metropole and bases for Western power projection. And so it's unlikely that Christian inhabitants of the Middle East would have welcomed the stream of European fleets and their merchants backed by Western guns, he says adding that Imperialism would have prospered in the region's complex ethnic mosaic--the raw materials for the old game of divide and rule. I would like to focus more attention to Christianity in this article because I think there are some issues which need to be cleared up. Regarding Christianity, it is crucial to understand the role of Paul of Tarsus, which many Christians and Muslims dont realize. For all practical purposes, and by definition, Paul of Tarsus was a Prophet. This Prophet claimed to receive a revelation from God, came with a new law, and presented a Holy Scripture for men to follow. Thou Paul of Tarsus preferred to be called an Apostle, in reality he was much more than an Apostle; he was a Prophet too. After Jesus left this earth, some years later, Paul of Tarsus claimed to receive a revelation from God and became a Prophet. Jesus Christ never left a single page of writing behind, nor did he leave a institute of higher learning, so Paul did not have to append his scripture to a already existing scripture, nor did he have to join an already existing party or organization established by Jesus, and work his way up to President. Paul of Tarsus was not the only Prophet at that time, there were actually many different men who appeared and claimed to be Prophets, Paul of Tarsus was just one of them. Paul claimed that he had the true religion, and that he possessed the true message of Christ, Paul established himself as the sole source for all information pertaining to Jesus Christ, while proclaiming that his competitors were frauds. Nevertheless, his competitors thought that Paul was the one who was the fraud. To make a long story short, Pauls church eventually beat out its competitors, and arose as the sole victorious Church which is present today (not to mention, Pauls Church divided into many sects like Catholic, Protestant, JW, and Baptist..etc). This is a very important fact of history, because it is Pauls church, which had the privilege of selecting all the books of the New Testament. And not only that, but Pauls Church has provided 100% of all Christian beliefs, for example: Trinity Original Sin Salvation Blood atonement Baptism Now some Christians may say, Thats not true, we also have the writing of the very Disciples of Christ, like Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. Well, not exactly, because it was Pauls Church which selected these gospels and claimed that they were the writings of Christs disciples. But there is no way which we can independently confirm that these 4 gospels were actually written by them, there simply is no proof at all. The only reason why Christians believe that these gospels were written by the disciples is because Pauls Church said so. As I mentioned above, it is Pauls Church, which provided 100% of all Christian beliefs. Why Are Women Turning to Islam By an ex-Christian Lady At a time when Islam is faced with hostile media coverage particularly where the status of women in Islam is concerned, it may be quite surprising to learn that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, and even more ironic to discover that the majority of converts to Islam are WOMEN . The status of women in society is neither a new issue, nor is it a fully settled one. And where Islam is mentioned, for many the term 'Muslim Women' prompts images of exhausted mothers chained to the stove, 'victims' suppressed in a life of indoctrination, frantic to be westernized and so on. Others will go to great lengths to explain how the hijaab is an obstacle, clouding the mind, and comment that female converts are either brainwashed, stupid or traitors to their sex. I reject such accusations and pose to them the following question: why is it that so many women who have been born and brought in the so called 'civilized' societies of Europe and America are willing to reject their 'liberty' and 'independence' to embrace a religion that supposedly oppresses them and is widely assumed to be prejudicial to them? As a Christian convert to Islam, I can only present my personal experience and reasons for rejecting the 'freedom' that women claim to have in this society in favour of the only Religion that truly liberates women by giving us a status and position, which is completely unique when compared with that of our non-Muslim counterparts. Before coming to Islam, I had strong feminist tendencies and recognized that where a woman was concerned, a lot of shuffling around had been going on, yet without being able to pin her on the social map. The problem was ongoing: new 'women's issues' being raised without the previous ones being satisfactorily resolved. Like the many women who shared my background, I would accuse Islam of being a sexist religion, discriminating, oppressing and giving men the greater privileges. All of this, coming from a person who did not even know Islam, one who had been blinded due to ignorance and had accepted this deliberately distorted definition of Islam. However, despite my criticisms of Islam, inwardly, I wasn't satisfied with my own status as a woman in this society. It seemed to me that society would define such terms as 'liberty' and 'freedom' and then these definitions were accepted by women without us even attempting to question or challenge them. There was clearly a great contradiction between what women were told in theory and what actually happened in practice. The more I pondered, the greater emptiness I felt within. I was slowly beginning to reach a stage where my dissatisfaction with my status as a women in this society, was really a reflection of my greater dissatisfaction with society itself. Everything seemed to be degenerating backwards, despite the claims that the 1990's was going to be the decade of success and prosperity. Something vital seemed to be missing from my life and nothing would fill this vacuum. Being a Christian did not do anything for me, and I began to question the validity of only remembering God one day a week - Sundays! As with many other Christians too, I had become disillusioned with the hypocrisy of the Church and was becoming increasingly unhappy with the concept of Trinity and the deification of Jesus. Eventually, I began to look into Islam. At first, I was only interested in looking at those issues, which specifically dealt with women. I was surprised. What I read and learned, taught me a lot about myself as a woman, and also about where the real oppression of a woman lies: in every other system and way of life outside of Islam. Muslim women have been given their rights in every aspect of the religion with clear definitions of their role in society - as had men - with no injustice against either of them. As Allah says: Whoever does deeds of righteousness, be they male or female, and have faith, they will enter paradise and not the least injustice will be done to them. [Nisaa 4:124] So having amended my misconceptions about the true status of women in Islam, I was now looking further. I wanted to find that thing which was going to fill the vacuum in my life. There are many questions I have received from friends and family members since my conversion and most of them have been related to this topic. Some of the main questions from people who know little about Islam were: Won't your husband be oppressive, and isn't the hijab oppressive? Wont your husband beat you? Please, ladies, know your rights in Islam! Men are not allowed to beat women in Islam. In fact IF they DO touch you, they can't even leave a mark on your skin, there should not even be a red mark (you know, that fades away in seconds). The hijab is a woman's choice, it is not forced upon them. Anyone that forces their women to wear it is ruled by culture, and not by Islam. Most women make the choice to wear hijab because it FREES them from oppression. Do you truly think a half naked woman sitting on a car to SELL the car is not oppression? Women being used as sexual objects? A woman in hijab is looked at with the highest respect, and for her mind, and not her beauty. About men being allowed 4 wives. Do you think a woman would really want four husbands? Would YOU want 4 husbands to take care of at the end of the day?! It¡¯s hard enough caring for one! (laundry, dinner, ETC) The whole reason behind men being allowed 4 wives is for social needs. In the times of the Prophet (peace be upon him) there was a lot of war. Men would leave their wives and kids and not return home. What were these women supposed to do to care for her family? There was no social support in those days. Everything about Islam is an answer to a problem. You don't see too many Muslim men taking more than one wife these days because he has to treat each one equally. That means, a house for each wife, he has to spend the same amount of time with each wife, therefore you have to be WELL OFF in order to do this. And in fact, while polygamy is allowed, even Allah SWT in the Quran says one is better. Another question I get is this If a father dies, why the son gets more than the daughter? In the Quran, it says that the son is to receive double of what the daughter would get. HOW IS THIS FAIR???¡± Well I will tell you how it is fair. The Quran also says that the son must care for all the women in his family until his sisters are married, and if the mother doesn't remarry it is the son's responsibility to care for her entirely, just as his father did. That means, any money that he received, he will likely not see a penny of it for himself after he cares for his sisters and mother. ALSO the money the daughter receives is her in its entirety. While the son is paying for her living expenses and food, the money she gets, she may spend on whatever she likes, it is hers and nobody can touch it. Now does that seem fair? How about women in Islam that don't have jobs and slave away at home. Well, that is the woman's choice. A woman can either work, or stay at home and care for her children. Since it is the man's duty to provide for his family, the woman usually prefers to watch her kids grow, then to have them in daycare while she makes money. If she does decide to work however, any of the money she makes is hers to spend on whatever she likes, and she does not have to put a single penny of it towards the household. Women in Islam are seen as more precious then diamonds and pearls. We are held high. It is US that carry life inside of us for 9 months, it is us that raise the children. Allah (SWT) gives men and women equality or rights. We as women however are not the same as men. Men were made to be able to provide for a family, to be strong in times of need, to be the king of the home. But as history tells this story, No king can run a country without a right hand. It deepens America’s respect for Muslims here at home and around the world.1 Today, Muslim Americans are a cornerstone of our American community. They enrich our political and cultural life; they provide leadership in every field of human endeavor, from business to medicine, to scholarship.2 These public pronouncements of President Clinton to Muslim Americans are indicative of how Islam has become established as a major religion in America. For most of America’s history, Islam had been a marginal presence. Muslims were mostly foreign nationals or resident aliens, with only a few naturalized United States citizens, and even fewer second or third generation Americans. Christian churches relegated evangelism of Muslims to foreign missions. The typical American Christian rarely, if ever, encountered a religiously active Muslim. Now, however, Islam is a noticeable religious force in America. Christians need to be as knowledgeable of Islam’s presence as they are of any other religion in America. Islam is no passing fad, and it is growing quickly in America. American Muslim leaders are quite open about their hopes and dreams. In an editorial entitled “Time to Make an Imprint,” Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi writes: “North America needs our contribution, and it is up to us to make an imprint in founding a truly Islamic civilization on this continent.”3 Very few Americans lack an opinion about Islam. There are numerous views concerning the religion, many not favorable. “According to a recent Roper Poll, 50% of those polled believed all Muslims to be inherently anti-American. Today, the bywords of the relationship between the Muslim and the Judeo-Christian worlds are alienation and suspicion.”4 Carl Ellis, a noted African-American Christian leader, asserts that Islam “is the most serious threat to the church in America.”5 Muslim Influence. Just how influential is the Islamic community in America? Since September 1999, Muslims have conducted Friday congregational prayers inside the U.S. Capitol building. American Muslim opposition to a Burger King restaurant opened in the West Bank in Israel caused the corporation to close it down. The United States military has tripled the number of Muslim chaplains in its ranks (serving more than 4,000 Muslim members of the military). Amazon.com changed a video review (of the movie Not without My Daughter) in response to Muslim complaints.6 In 1999 Georgetown University began a three-year project “to document the impact of Muslim Americans on the American horizon.”7 Islamic Horizons, one of the most influential Muslim journals in America with a distribution of more than 60,000,8 asserted in the article “Why Muslim Americans Need to Vote” that “Muslim Americans have power and its accompanying responsibility. We represent $75 billion of collective annual income, more than any Muslim country can produce.”9 This same issue relates how Muslim American complaints about a CNN online posting referring to Jerusalem as “the capital of Israel” prompted CNN to make appropriate changes quickly.10 The growing presence of Muslim Americans has not been lost on politicians either. For example, in New Jersey (home to an estimated 400,000 Muslims), former Governor Christine Todd Whitman signed a bill making New Jersey “the first state to enact a law ensuring the authenticity of Halal food.”11 Two Muslim Americans made history by delivering the benedictions on the first day of both the Democratic and Republican national conventions this past year.12 Also in 2000, Congress called on the United States Postal Service to issue a postal stamp commemorating the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Muslim Population and Growth. Is Islam the fastest growing religion in the world? Is it the fastest growing religion in America? The demographics tell us that the answer is yes to both questions. Establishing population demographics for Muslims is not easy. Even without completely accurate statistics, we find numerous independent studies in fairly close agreement. Most major studies estimate a worldwide Muslim population for the year 2000 at roughly 1.25 billion people; that is, about one-fifth or 20 percent of the world’s population.13 In comparison, Christianity is the largest religion in the world with about 33 percent of the world’s population.14 According to most reports, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.15 For example, in Europe, according to

What makes Muslims believe that the Quran is not written by Prophet Muhammad? Does the Quran claim that it is from God? Could the Prophet have copied some portions of the Bible? Are there scientific facts in the Quran? Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad is not the author of the Quran. God is its Author. The following points bear the fact: *First of all, the Quran itself, at a number of places and in different ways, says that it is from God. One of the claims runs thus: This is indeed a Quran most honourable, a Book well-guarded...a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds. (Quran 56:77-80) (Here, one ought to know the features of the Quran to understand the claim better. For instance, if the Quran had consisted of a number of books, and each book was made up of a number of chapters, then each of the books had to claim that it was from God in order to render the WHOLE volume as coming from God. But, this is fortunately not so with the Quran. The Quran is just ONE Book made up of 114 chapters. So, if the Quran claims, in any of its chapters, that the Book is from God, then the WHOLE Quran is from God. Yet, the Quran does not make the divine claim only once, but several times in different phrases and in different chapters.) *If the Prophet had written the Quran _ a Book par excellence _ surely he would have claimed credit for it, but he did not. He could not claim what was not his. Indeed God says: This Quran is not such as can be produced by anyone other than God. (10:37) *The Prophet was unlettered. However, even if he was educated and had written the Quran, how could he be bold enough to make this statement: Do they not consider (ponder over) the Quran (with care)? Had it been from other than God, they would surely have found therein discrepancies. (4:82) Abdullah Yusuf Ali, commenting on this verse (verse 4:82) in his English translation of the Quran, says: From a mere human point of view, we should have expected much discrepancy, because (1) Prophet Muhammad who promulgated it was not a learned man or philosopher, (2) it was promulgated at various times and in various circumstances, and (3) it is addressed to all grades of mankind. Yet, when properly understood, its various pieces fit together better than a jigsaw puzzle even when arranged without any regard to chronological order. There was just the One Inspirer and one inspired. *The Quran took 23 years to complete. Had the verses of the Quran (which contains 6,666 verses) been written by the Prophet, he would have needed a number of drafts and the work would have needed editing, updating, etc. But this did not happen, yet the information is consistent throughout the Quran. The verses were taken down as dictated by the Prophet only once and no redrafting, editing or updating took place after that. *At a number of stages during the 23-year period, challenges to reproduce, even a chapter of the Quran, were made. If the Prophet had written the Quran, he would not have made the challenges, for fear that the learned Arabs and eminent poets of his time would have taken up his challenges and shamed him. One of the challenges goes thus: And if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed (from time to time) to Our servant (Muhammad), then produce a chapter like thereunto... (2:23) *The Quran says that the Prophet was not learned. So, if the Prophet was educated in some institution but mentioned in the Quran that he wasn't, he would have been accused of being a liar and his mission would have fallen through. *Even if the Prophet was learned, how could he have written such an inimitable Book of Information and Wisdom without resorting to consultation with prominent scholars and the best books from the best libraries in the world?! If he did this, it would surely have been known, since every move he made was known to people. The Prophet was a historical figure, not a mythological figure. *The Prophet was the busiest and most active person in history. So, how could he have found the time to write (even if he were educated) such a comprehensive and extensive Book of Guidance which would have needed years of seclusion and concentration to complete? *In the Quran, in Chapter 111, it is mentioned that Abu Lahab, one of the Prophet's uncles who was always against Islam, would never accept Islam. This Revelation came some ten years before the death of Abu Lahab. How could the Prophet have dared to write this chapter because all he (Abu Lahab) needed to do to prove that the Quran was not the Words of God, was to accept Islam dishonestly? *The Prophet was mentioned by name in the Quran only five times whereas Jesus Christ's name was (honourably) mentioned 25 times. Such a person is Robert Spencer, the Christian neo-con who is friends with the crazy witch named Ann coulter, who called for mass forced conversion to Christianity, on top of that this Christian neo-con is friends with Ali Sina the lunatic who called for the Muslim world to be nuked. And then Spencer claims its Muslims who are violent! If anyone reads Robert Spencer's rubbish site one will always see that he blames Islam for everything, as the neo-con writes: Yes, that sentence is sarcastic. It is designed to call attention to the absurdity of the public dogma that Islamic terrorism has nothing to do with Islam -- a blind dogma that prevents honest discussion of the elements of Islam that jihadists are using to recruit terrorists, and of what can be done about them. So the neo-con is saying there are certain Quranic passages and hadiths that are responsible for some events we see around the world, he is basically referring to the verses in the Quran that deal with Jihad. The neo-con writes about ?what can be done about them', what this neo-con basically means is that what can be done about Jihad verses and hadiths? The answer is simple, to teach them properly, how they should properly be followed, and in what context, and to examine the verses and hadiths to see what context they were in, that is how you deal with them. But this neo-con has other agendas in mind, what he wants to do is either remove Jihad verses and hadiths, or re-interpret them to such an extent that they no longer hold their original meanings, and this Spencer will NEVER happen. Muslims will never remove passages and hadiths dealing with Jihad, nor will we re-interpret them to your petty desires. It is obvious as to why this neo-con wants the concept of Jihad to be thrown out of Islam, because this will leave the way open for his likes to oppress, and hurt Muslims and get away with it, he basically wants Muslims to remove Jihad so they cant defend themselves in certain situations, and that isn't a surprise. Spencer would like nothing more than to bomb, attack, and kill Muslims with Muslims laying down and not rising to defend themselves, Spencer allies himself with people who openly call for Muslims to be entirely wiped out or forced to conversion, so Spencer cannot deny he doesn't want that. So no Robert, Jihad, and the true concept of Jihad taught by the prophet will forever remain. And also let me clear something up for this neo-con, when I say Jihad will never be ended, or thrown out, I am not saying that Jihad means bombing civilians, and so on, Spencer should go learn Jihad from the top scholars and he will see that his twisted and blatant lies about Jihad will be crushed. But you see folks, it doesn't end there, Spencer doesn't just want Jihad to be thrown out of Islam, or to re-interpret it, once he does this Spencer will move on to say that all verses calling Christianity false must be removed as well or re-interpreted to mean something else! It will keep moving until he wants Islam and the Quran to say that Christianity is true, and that Muslims cannot defend themselves against a violent physical and ideological crusade! And that is his true hidden agenda, the man is a Catholic, he has a Catholic agenda, he wants Islam destroyed, or re-interpreted in such a way that it no longer opposes the false pagan religion of Catholism. Off course the neo-con will deny it, but his work and words are evident for his twisted agenda, remove Jihad, and don't call Christianity false! And this is not a Christian Catholic agenda?! Since Spencer knows he will never be able to disprove Islam, he wants to try and re-interpret Islam to make it conform with his pagan Catholic beliefs, and to do this he will bring the help of apostates who claim to be ?moderate' Muslims, it is basically a new missionary tactic, he is a missionary in disguise putting the face of a neutral scholar. Now a common point that both us Muslims and Christians can agree on is that God is all powerful, he is not weak, feeble, nor is he dependant on others, rather it is us humans and other creations who are in need of him. We are both in agreement in this, and anyone who is not in agreement with this should consult the Quran and the Bible and they will see this for themselves. So since we have this point cleared, we can move on to the main point. So to the Christians I ask you this, do you really believe that God came out of a womb? That God came out of a womb covered in blood, shaking, and crying? Think of this, do you really believe that? Do you believe the all mighty and all powerful God came out in such a state? Is that not a paradox? How can God be all powerful yet he comes out as a tiny weak baby who is crying and shaking? However so forget the paradox, just think of this situation, that the all mighty powerful God, the God who created me and you, and the sun, and the moon, and the heavens and all that is around us, this God came out of a womb shivering and covered in blood?! Now let us move on, let us move on to the after-birth, when the baby is a few days old, do you really believe that God was once a tiny small baby, who needed to be breast fed?! Do you believe God used to be a tiny baby who would fall asleep as babies do?! Do you believe God was a tiny baby who sometimes cries in the middle of the night?! Remember, God is the all powerful, the all mighty, do not forget this. Do you know the skin of a new born baby is very soft, the bones have not even formed, for instance, do you know if you were to slightly push on a babies head with your finger alone that it would actually cause the babies head to cave in at the specific pressure point, this is how weak a baby is, and you believe this is God? Look at the babies hand, and feet, look how small and tiny they are, do you believe this is God? Look at how the baby eats, with food falling from its mouth and making a mess, do you believe this is God?! Also as we all know, babies also wet themselves; do you believe God used to wet himself?! Please, use your rationality and logic, do you not realize these grave insults you are ascribing to the all mighty creator?! Do not start giving me a sermon neither quoting 100 verses from your Bible, as I said USE YOUR LOGIC, forget the books, use your God given brain which he gave you to think logically and rationally. Let us move on, a baby now grows up to be a teenager, and during this age the human begins to get his sexual hormones up, and starts to have sexual feelings, this is just how the body works, and this is biology, the body wants to mate. So are you telling me when God reached that age that he began to have his sexual hormones raging?! Now other things that are in our human nature is sleep, and when we sleep we have dreams, good and bad ones. Are you telling me, that God had nightmares?! Nightmares about what? As we all know, there will be at least one time in our life where we will have such a bad dream it will wake us up in fear and sweat. Are you telling me God once had such a bad dream that he woke up sweating and in fear?! I could go on and on, but this should do, this should make you think and ponder what you actually say, and if it does not then you can never be helped I'm afraid. If you think that God went through all of the above, then you are without a doubt a very lost soul, and a soul who is in deep trouble for the hereafter, because God will not allow such insults to be ascribed to him, he is merciful in this life that he at least gives you the free will to say what you want, but make no mistake that justice will be served in the hereafter, and this is something that every non-Muslim should really ponder because it is not a game at all.
