We unfortunately named our group (which now has 1800 or so people)
a year ago with '24/7 2fort' in the name, which is no longer
 accurate, or L4D friendly :)

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available - broken?

On Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 21:09, Jason Ruymen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
A required update for the Left 4 Dead Demo has been released.

Right before this update, my 16 public servers were full. I did a
shutdown, updated the servers, and waited for the existing games to
finish. After they did, I started my server up in the exact same
manner I had earlier, but now my servers lie empty. My command line
is:

./srcds_run -netconport 281## -netconpassword foo +hostport 271## +map
l4d_dem_hospital01_apartment -steamport 261## +clientport 251##
+matchmakingport 241## +systemlinkport 231## +tv_port 221## -fork 16

Specifying the IP doesn't help. My server.cfg only sets hostname and
rcon_password. I tried connecting to one of my servers through the
console and it worked fine. As soon as I connected, other people
started connecting, so I quit. I watched the console and the game
filled and later emptied; then stayed empty. I do NOT set
sv_steamgroup and sv_steamgroup_exclusive and checked they're both at
the default of empty and 0, respectively.

I took a look at the server browser and found 60-70ish servers in the
Internet tab. Every single one of them was non-empty. But there were
several hundred in the custom tab, almost all of them empty.
Including my own servers. I would guess that sv_steamgroup_exclusive
is stopping non-empty servers from being joined even when set to 0.

I can confirm that this is a problem - everyone sees the four servers I

It also seems like opening certain menus then returning to the main menu

Ok, we're getting ready to ship the first round of the group
 features we've
 been working on this week.

There is a new cvar called sv_steamgroup, which takes the Steam
 group number
(which is now visible on the group's administrative page). The
 server will
still be part of matchmaking, but users that are in that group
 will be able
to browse directly to it from the main menu. Also, if this value
 is set,
there will be a button near the message of the day that allows
 users to go
directly to that group's page. This allows them to join that
 group if they
like, and then be able to browse back to it in the future.

There is another convar in there called sv_steamgroup_exclusive,
 which isn't
completely implemented yet. The goal if it will be to make a
 server only
joinable by users within that group, but there are some edge
 cases where
matchmaking could still potentially put users on there. People
 are welcome
to play around with it for now, and we should have it fully
 implemented in
the next few days or so.

Hopefully this addresses some of the concerns server admins have
 brought up.

How about an ID and password feature? Soon enough people will be adding
their servers as part of big groups whit out being related to the groups at
all. It's not at all hard to get the Group ID. Might become annoying when
random servers popup with horrible admins under respectable groups :/.
Someone might even decide to do some odd scam attempts by assigning the
server to the Valve group and convincing players that they are from Valve or
something along those lines.

Still getting this issue also. It doesn't happen to me every time, but in a
group of four players, it inevitably nails someone and we all hafta wait 5+
minutes for it to either calm down, or restart the client.

Sometimes restarting the client doesn't even fix it.

The game is going out in two days just release a freaking and functionnal

I can confirm that this is a problem - everyone sees the four servers I
linked to the group, but it takes 30 seconds or so for them to appear
  on
   the
menu, and only one person has ever actually got one of the servers to
   show
up in the join group server menu itself. I've tried manually running
heartbeat, adding more master servers, etc. to no effect.

It also seems like opening certain menus then returning to the main

will stop the group servers list on the main menu from ever appearing.

Someone else reported the same problem: If I waited 30 seconds or so

the
main menu, I eventually see servers scrolling by for 'Steam group

but this takes a while, as they do not appear immediately like friends
playing on servers does.

However when I click on them to go to the 'find games' screen, there
  are
never any results for games to join, Ive tried waiting at this screen

several minutes too.

Fourthing this. I appreciate the technical aspects behind it, as they
probably use the group name as some kind of database primary key, but
it would be worth it to the community at large to use some kind of

Just an addition, it would be very nice to have the ability to list our
servers in the steam community group. Perhaps even a web based server list
with all of the servers, would be handy to have for the players who have

I've noticed a slight bug in the Steam Community Server Join feature. I am
the admin of our group, but also belong to a couple of other groups. When I
click on the Play Campaign/Steam Community option, it brings me to the
browser and my server pops up in the list. The bug is that it shows one of
my other groups icons, instead of my primary group. It does eventually
change to my groups icon, but I thought that was kind of odd. Has anyone
else experienced something like this?

Ahh, Thank you. I hadn't seen that discussion. I can definitely understand
that
view point, although I'm not sure why the group name is any worse than the
avatar or the Abbreviation for a griefing attack. Goatse and meatspin could do
quite a bit of damage to ones reputation before its reported/taken down. :)
Its a shame that it'd be a huge pain in their butt to have a method to request
a
name change which depends on someone approving it.

If someone at valve does want to go with a moderated submit/approve I'll
volunteer to look over a few hundred in exchange for getting mine changed :)

Anyways, thanks for pointing me at the official stance thing.

   - Fixed a crash when exiting the game
   - Fixed a few cases where the game would crash when using ALT-TAB
   - Fixed a problem that could cause texture corruption on some ATI

   - Fixed a bug that could cause infected horde to disappear

And we've added more documentation for dedicated servers in the file

Re: [hlds] Steam Community Group: Changing Group Name

2008-11-15 Thread Roman Hatsiev
Seems like rather far-fetched argument to me. Pity it is somewhat official...

On Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 9:39 PM, Burton Johnsey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
The name of a group is basically it's primary identity. Let's say I create
a group called Left 4 Dead UK, tons of UK gamers who are excited about
Left 4 Dead then join it.

Later I rename the group to Racist/Pedophile Slur Here (you get the idea),
now everyone who had joined is associated with this text unintentionally. Is
that what you would want as a group member? Rename is ripe for abuse because
it essentially allows the owner to change what I as a member have identified
myself with. It's not being implemented because of that, as well as because
of the confusion it creates for users when the name suddenly changes.

It's quite intentional that in order to perform a rename now you have to
create a new group and re-invite everyone. That gives them the chance to say
no, I don't want to be part of these new group with a different identity.

Fourthing this. I appreciate the technical aspects behind it, as they
probably use the group name as some kind of database primary key, but
it would be worth it to the community at large to use some kind of
  dissociated UUID primary key.

tl;dr: this would be an awesome feature.

[hlds] L4D Server issue, and GroupID is gone

2008-11-15 Thread hlds
Hello all, I'm new to this list so I appologize if this has been covered.

First of all, I have 11 servers.. 3 of which seem to bring players, the
others say hibernating. Last night 1,2,3,4 were working.. but today 7,8,9
are working, and 1,2,3,4 are no longer working.. Is this intentional to
only allow the servers to be active part of the time? Or is something
wrong.. I've also tried adding the Master servers manually and that has
not helped either. Before the last few updates all were full constantly.

Second question:
I was going to implement the new GroupID setting on the servers.. but it
seems like the GroupID has vanished from the Group admin page as of today!
It was there last night. Has this idea been abandoned?

[hlds] Server white-list?

2008-11-15 Thread Alex Smith
Hi there

Is it possible to configure a server with a white list. Yes, I know about
sv_password. But, I would prefer to just create a list of steam-IDs similar
to the ban list, of users that are allowed to join the server. I don't have
to worry about my server password being leaked with a white list, which in
my opinion makes it easier to manage my private servers.

I assume that srcds alone cannot do this. Is there any plug-in that exist
that can do this.

Thanks,

Alex Smith

Hey Valve,

So you release an update at 9pm on Friday night which pretty much renders
dedicated servers unjoinable and unplayable and now we're not hearing
anything back from you

I hope that we see better effort when we're playing the full game we paid
for. I can sort of forgive because this is a free demo and it's not fully
supported, but this is pretty ridiculous. I would suggest play testing your
changes before releasing them to the public, that might be better served in
the future.

yes this is still happening on servers. We have it on all 12 of our

I'm hoping that we will see a fix for this.

It would be nice to hear someone from the L4D group to at least

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-15 Thread Cc2iscooL
I figured out the issue with the disconnect/reconnect bug. It definitely has
something to do with the rates on the clientside.

Scenario to test: Set your client rates to the following.

cl_cmdrate 100
cl_updaterate 100
rate 5

Beat the first level.

Now, on the second level, you should have latency issues.

Now, set your settings to the following.

cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 30
rate 2

The latency issue will disappear until the next time you reach that level,
and then you will have to set all of your rates to the top again, and then
back to the bottom to fix it once more.

Eureka! I've found it! :D

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-15 Thread hlds

Ok great, I can put that in the config file for my client can I not?

I figured out the issue with the disconnect/reconnect bug. It definitely
 has
something to do with the rates on the clientside.

The update they released today at 6(PST = Valves Time Zone) fixed
everything.. not break it. What problems are you having?!?!

-Welder

I would suggest play testing
 your
changes before releasing them to the public, that might be better served
 in
 the future.

why I didn't think of that earlier since it won't move on to the next

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-15 Thread turb0z
In my complete disgust for last night's update (and having to restart my
servers every 2 hours), I completely missed the fact that they released this
update.

I still maintain that they need to be more thorough in their play testing
with changes like this. This isn't the first time or the first game where
an update has broken something and it could have been easily avoided by
doing a bit of planning.

Re: [hlds] L4D Server issue, and GroupID is gone

2008-11-15 Thread turb0z
My servers are still running in to the same loop problem that plagued them
before the update.

It seems to occur after a full round of 2 maps and it restarts the campaign,
or if someone votes to restart a campaign.

Right now I have people on the server playing, but again, I'll have to
reboot them after this round is over and they're lagging out due to whatever
is causing the console loop to occur.

Re: [hlds] Steam community group features

2008-11-15 Thread Flubber
I finally got my servers working and showing in the Steam Group Servers,
well it's nice but so buggy. What is need to make it functionnal :
- When you choose an empty server make people allowed to create a lobby by
blocking this server for this private lobby in order to start the campaign
with friends
- Fixed the sv_steamgroup_exclusive 1 in order to make server reserve to a
specific community (i know it's a wip at this time)
- Make server which are password protected be visible if they are in your
community servers list
- Fixed the random port, my servers are changing port non stop not really
easy to track them thru webpage (working for a magazine we have our server
info and status on the home it's running the info each time), i'm not even
talking about firewall port opening let us force port for the game
- Show on the community server details the name of people in the game
- Fixe the client interface (windows disapearring over each other, not
showing up or disapearing when you click on the background), not showing and
add a real server bowser
- More to come surely... :'(

Re: [hlds] Server white-list?

2008-11-15 Thread Flubber
Maybe wait for a slot reserved once sourcemod or some other real admin
system is released.

2008/11/16 Alex Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hi there

Is it possible to configure a server with a white list. Yes, I know about
sv_password. But, I would prefer to just create a list of steam-IDs
 similar
to the ban list, of users that are allowed to join the server. I don't have
to worry about my server password being leaked with a white list, which in
my opinion makes it easier to manage my private servers.

I assume that srcds alone cannot do this. Is there any plug-in that exist
 that can do this.

 Thanks,

 Alex Smith

[hlds] Left 4 Dead rcon_address

2008-11-15 Thread Ian Barr
Why is there no rcon_address? I'm getting cannot connect to remote
server in-game even though I'm on the same network.

[hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-15 Thread Jason
I have no idea why it didn't have my text...

The error I posted was where the server sometimes goes into an infinite Host
loop which it never starts a game and causes 100% cpu usage.

We had this problem on the last update and this one has not fixed it. Running
Server 2003 R2 with the latest L4D Update.

Jason

You don't have sv_unreserve in your server.cfg do you? If you do, remove
that.
Maybe you should post your server.cfg as well(Remove rcon password so we
don't see)

I do have sv_unreserve in the server.cfg but that is so that people can join
mid-game?

Or has this been changed?

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-15 Thread hlds
I would suggest removing that... People can join mid game anyway(Not from
a lobby, but manually). When you do that, its pretty much telling the
server that the Lobby that reserved it no longer wants it.. And it
executes server config at game restart, so everytime its doing a new game,
its ridding itself from the lobby reservation, which may be causing it to
loop. Because it may be dropping those players, then new players join the
server, and get dropped too, and it repeats. so I THINK that is the issue.
I could be wrong... but I suggest you remove that and try it again.
