The group servers work fine now, the only problem is that it sometimes
displays the wrong group avatars.

Do they fully work?

When I'm browsing the group servers, I am able to join if there is someone
in the server. However if the server is empty, it won't connect through
group server menu or by using connect in browser.

And yes, also having the problem of people listing their servers under my
group's steam community too.

I take it someone has found a way of working back (or just guessing) the

Shouldn't a group admin have to approve adding a server to the group page?

[hlds] left4dead demo server and client update on saturday the 15th

2008-11-16 Thread brian lyons
I am having some new difficulties which did not exist prior to the update
saturday afternoon. specifically altency and lag issues for both the client and
server. being dropped from the server or server timed out. messeges that say
retrying connection. now I have gone back and lokked at the servers
configuration file and it has not changed. nothing of th hardware has been
changed. I ran network tests from dslreports to calgary, losangeles , miami and
texas all report no problem. something within the update has caused the
problem. if there is anything you need me to check please respond with the
info.
thankyou, Brian L.

Some people left my server, and the group menu kept saying my servers were
full, it seems that it doesn't update the player numbers if some players
leave.

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-16 Thread David Kellaway
Aside from it not being particularly hard to guess the number of a
random group (as I posted earlier, it's probably just the primary key
for that group in Valve's database, since they seem to be sequential by
group age), I don't think there's deliberate misassigning of servers -
there seems to be a bug on the client end where a server from group 1234
will show up to anyone in group 123, and so on. I'd guess this is
because it's not looking for the exact number, it's just seeing if that
number is a substring of the server's tags (which it is, because
"grp:123" is a subset of "grp:1234").

What this ultimately means is until this is fixed, the earlier your
group(s) were created, the more bogus results you're going to see. I'm
in multiple groups with two-digit IDs, so the menu is getting a bit
unmanageable - it'd be nice if this was fixed as fast as the menu itself
was added...

That's not what it does, someone posted that earlier. It's just a

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-16 Thread Eric van Beesten
Maybe a stupid question,

Yesterday i have added sv_steamgroup to my server.cfg. rebooted
the server and when I connected to my l4d demo I saw, in the main menu, my
servers. But now I can't find them anymore ingame. Even when I search for
them. I'm sure the sv_steamgroup is set and has the correct groupid. Really
strange..

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-16 Thread Eric van Beesten
Correction,

I see my servers after 30 seconds/1 minute in the main menu. This is the
same problem already posted by other people on the mailinglist. So problem
is already known.

Really
strange..

Is this right for multiple steam groups?

sv_steamgroup "123456,23456,45678"

or

sv_steamgroup "123456"

sv_steamgroup "23456"

Thx,

Patrick

Re: [hlds] Server white-list?

2008-11-16 Thread gameadmin
As it's not been made explicit: are you talking about left4dead or some
other game?
If it's left4dead, which doesn't have 3rd party admin mods yet, you can set
sv_steamgroup to the value of a steamgroup you control access to (you can
get the group ip from the admin page on steam community) and set
sv_steamgroup_exclusive to 1. Setting exclusive _should_ stop your server
appearing if it's empty and you're not in the steam group. Once at least
one player has joined, the server is visible to all, and this feature isn't
completely implemented yet, so exclusivity isn't guaranteed.
If you're not using left4dead, there's bad news and good news. The bad news
is that that feature doesn't exist, the good news is there are any number of
third party admin mods that will do it for you. :)

Re: [hlds] Server white-list?

2008-11-16 Thread Flubber
Can't wait for a sourcemod update, "sv_steamgroup_exclusive" is clearly not
working, and i don't see the point of aking the server visible once omeone
join. The purpose of linking a server to a community is to allow people to
play together if anyone can join and take a community member place that's
just useless. I relly hope it will be exclusive before a game is launch and
after. And a least that we will be able to create lobby before immediately
joining the server. has i described in another thread.

[hlds] L4D Community Server System Objective

2008-11-16 Thread Nick Emson
Hi all,

I'm pleased to see Valve implementing some changes to the originally bundled
matchmaking system, but still a little bit confused as to what their objective
is based on its current form.

Navigating in from the main menu we see the new community server list (most of
the time) and are able to click on it to bring up the community server browse
list. From here you can highlight a server and you have 2 choices: 'Create
Lobby' and 'Join Server'. 'Create Lobby' is a bit misleading as it seemingly
has nothing to do with the communtiy aspect that you have navigated to and
takes you to the typical Online Campaign lobby screen - i.e. random server
allocation and player matchmaking. If you choose 'Join Server' on an empty
server then you are thrown straight into it and up launches the game after
seeing the lobby screen flick by for a brief half-second with no control.

Given the current problem with the "sv_steamgroup_exclusive" "1" whereby
outsiders from your community can still connect once a member has joined, it is
currently near impossible to get 4 buddies on our server before it fills up.
Therefore, if we are to accept this system we at least need a lobby to get
everyone in and ready with some organisation. Secondly, if this were the full
game then I imagine you would be wanting to select the intended campaign. I
guess in short my question is, should it be behaving this way and should I be
expecting to see a lobby screen for our community dedi servers (as mentioned it
briefly flicks by)?

Finally, is there any news on an entirely exclusive mode ("2" - entirely
exclusive regardless ?) or re-implemented password system so that upon the
games release I dont find myself "kickid"'ing in a frenzy to get my mates on
our server against the masses.

Still a bit confused by all these hastily arranged changes - but pleased to see
Valve are listening to much-needed change.

Regards, TC.

[hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-16 Thread Jason Ruymen
A required update for the Left 4 Dead Demo has been released. Please run
hldsupdatetool to receive the update. The specific changes include:

- Fixed a bug where the connection to a server would get stuck in a looping
state
- Made sv_steamgroup_exclusive not connect to matchmaking. Removed
sv_unreserve, private servers should sv_steamgroup_exclusive now
- Improved the speed in finding a game lobby
- Fixed a bug that could cause you to search for a game lobby indefinitely

is there suppport for multiple steam groups in sv_steamgroup ?

For example:

sv_steamgroup "1234,5678,6543"

or

sv_steamgroup "1234"
sv_steamgroup "5678"
sv_steamgroup "7652"
sv_steamgroup "8643"

Regard,

This might have been my bug or sv_unreserve, however with sv_unreserve
removed and this supposedly fixed I guess it doesn't really matter.

> - Made sv_steamgroup_exclusive not connect to matchmaking. Removed

Hmm fair enough sv_unreserve was removed, can people still join mid-game?

As for sv_steamgroup_exclusive Is it going to have multiple values? I was
thinking I might start with having 1 community member join then get
populated by matchmaking and later on maybe making it full exclusive?

So sv_steamgroup_exclusive

0 - Disabled
1 - Exclusive for first group member?
2 - Full exclusive only group members?

sv_allow_lobby_connect_only is back, is this normal?

20:39:27 "sv_allow_lobby_connect_only" = "1"
  - If set, players may only join this server from matchmaking
lobby, may not connect directly.

And even with it set to 1, you can still direct connect because direct

I don't get it i got sv_steamgroup_exclusive set to 1 but still people who
are not part of our group can still joined the server. How exactly does it
work, excluse to the first player or exclusive to players from a group even
when a game is running. We really want our servers to be closed to anyone
but our steam community members.

If I remember right,
Setting it to 1 excludes the first player, and setting it to 2 will block

Either way, if you're having issues that you can't see to figure out. Start
the server without any configuration with no command line options
and one by one add command line options and then configuration.

I think that's the intention. You are direct connecting to the server after
all. Anybody else can direct connect using the connect command after you

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-16 Thread Kitteny Berk
If it was intended, I'd expect no lobby, or a functional one, not a
barely a lobby that doesn't serve any purpose, remember, this applies
on joining one of my group's servers, not just on a standard manual DC,
so it's the same as every client in every community will see when they
join a community server. doesn't really strike me as ideal.

I'd like to see a lobby when you connect from the group server list, so
people can set a game up before it starts, rather than having to run a
few votes, just to get the game they intended to play.

Also, it seems servers with sv_password set don't show in the group
server list, so there's no functional way to protect them and have
servers that are *only* joinable by my community, while not having to
teach people how to open the console and direct connect manually.

I'm personally really liking the direction valve are taking with this,
but it needs refining a bit to be functional enough to replace a server
browser.

[hlds] How do servers handle checksum mismatch?

2008-11-16 Thread Barc0de_
I ve been modelling for awhile now, and i kept telling all the download users
that they can modify the textures of the models i made.

so now, it comes to my concern that if a user/mapper modify the texture(causing
the texture into a different size, different checksum). How well does server or
client handle this?

This will be the same scenario as a player connecting to server A. Then
connecting to server B which has the same name of the map but different
version. Will the player keep downloading the current map everytime when he
connects to different server?

thanks for your patience, i appreciate any replies..

Question passed on by Kat_Fish, original question @
http://www.fpsbanana.com/threads/138989?1

Note: Personally I am not even sure what he is talking about, it sounds just
like custom textures which would be perfectly fine if modified.

Re: [hlds] How do servers handle checksum mismatch?

2008-11-16 Thread bl4nk
I'm pretty sure that unless a server is pure (without the proper
whitelist) or enforces consistency that custom models and such are fine.
Maps are different however; they're required to be the same. The server
will check if the client has the map, and if they do, check the checksum
against their map. If it's not the same, they'll be kicked with a
message telling them that they're map differs from the server's.
