Re: [hlds] What's the word on people being unable to use some unlocks?
I had the unlocks, and Steam Friends went down, then came back. I wanted to change back to the normal weapons, and this just wouldn't work. I clicked "equip" like 10 times for every weapon, and it would just stay on the unlockable weapon. I guess every time steam friends goes down, you need to restart steam to change your unlocks :/ 2009/2/28 Dustin Wyatt > Looks like a server restart fixed it for me. > > I would normally just do that before posting here, but the server was > full... > > On Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 7:28 PM, Brent Veal >wrote: > > > I've noticed on some servers I can't use the unlocks. Re: [hlds] Moving on
I totally agree with this. I personally love playing the game on occasion and slowly earning the achievements, then being rewarded with a new toy, so I would be happiest if that wasn't taken away. People who choose not to do that and hack or farm to get the achievements don't bother me. I find them ridiculously impatient, but that's their problem. Give us a little checkbox for enabling the weapons regardless of achievements, and I believe everyone will be happy. I've noticed on some servers I can't use the unlocks. I'll have them when I first join, but as soon as I die and respawn, all unlocks dont work. But again, it's only on certain servers. Re: [hlds] Moving on
Well, if you guys recall.. For the first few weeks when the medic pack came out you had to meet a lot more achievements (all of them) to get the last weapon. One of the larger achievements was to heal a million points and that was a requirement to get before you could unlock the ubersaw. From what I heard some people complained about the time required to get that achievement, and henceforth we have only needed to do a certain few number of achievements to gain all the milestones. Anyway, long story short.. I don't mind the achievements being bound to the weapons, but there needs to be a check or some huge goal in place to keep people who don't play scout (or said class) often from getting all the weapons. If people learned to put time into their larger achievements there would be less of a rush to get out there and farm them. Of course, then those that just use the unlocker programs become vastly more unfair. Long story short, people love challenges. Just look at WoW, or the other MMO's.. People sit on there for months just to get to a level they can use their armor, or whatever. I don't waste my time with MMO's but it's just basic human instinct that if a great deal of time is put into something then the reward is more appreciated and equally revered by those that are in the process of acquiring it or interested in meeting the achievement themselves. I'm not saying it should take TONS of time to unlock something, but it would be nice for the unlocking process to require all the achievements be done before the last unlockable is given.. Also, it would help for the achievement actions to be more server-side, and less client-side so it wouldn't be so easy for people to cheat their way through with an unlocker program. Maybe some type of verifiable bit framework would be helpful, and to check/sync the achievement database everytime the client connects so if their achievements were not in the database, they wouldn't get their weapon unlocks. inb4 you know this is valve we're talking about. -Matt On Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 5:29 PM, Rick Payton wrote: > I'm in the "untie weapon unlocks from achievements" camp myself - that > would definitely end the fighting on the list from the past few days. > > -mauirixxx > - Sent from my #hlserveradmins IRC fanboyism > > -Original Message- > From: hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com > [mailto:hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com] On Behalf Of Cc2iscooL > Sent: Friday, February 27, 2009 12:57 PM > To: Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list > Subject: Re: [hlds] Moving on > > Maybe a better system would be to let the player decide. > > For instance...have an optional interface. > > If they change it to giving all weapons without achievements, it will > give them all the weapons and the achievements could be for a more "fun" > purpose. > > Or for the players that like getting achievements, they could have the > option of disabling the weapons until they get enough achievements for > the actual milestones. > > Honestly either way people are going to get the weapons, whether they > "cheat" and farm them or not...so why not let the player decide what > they want to do? > > On Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 4:19 PM, Spencer 'voogru' MacDonald < > voo...@voogru.com> wrote: > > > IMO, they should just do away with the unlockables and make the new > > weapons available. > > > > Everybody gets them anyway, one way or another, so it's a little > pointless. > > > > All you end up with is a corrupt achievements system where the > > majority of players farmed the achievements, solely to get the > unlocks. > > > > -Original Message- > > From: hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com > > [mailto:hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com] On Behalf Of Jake Skenna > > Sent: Friday, February 27, 2009 4:55 PM > > To: Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list > > Subject: Re: [hlds] Moving on > > > > I like getting them too, but the way the game has turned with people > > banning because of achievements or people downloading programs to get > > achievements is sort of ridiculous. Re: [hlds] Moving on
IMO, they should just do away with the unlockables and make the new weapons available. Everybody gets them anyway, one way or another, so it's a little pointless. All you end up with is a corrupt achievements system where the majority of players farmed the achievements, solely to get the unlocks. -Original Message- From: hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com [mailto:hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com] On Behalf Of Jake Skenna Sent: Friday, February 27, 2009 4:55 PM To: Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list Subject: Re: [hlds] Moving on I like getting them too, but the way the game has turned with people banning because of achievements or people downloading programs to get achievements is sort of ridiculous. Re: [hlds] [TF2] Rcon / SM Command to show players CLASS
The information is logged, but I don't believe there's a way to access it through the console. You can rig up an SM plugin to do it using GetClientTeam(clientIndex), where 1 <= clientIndex <= GetMaxClients() and IsClientInGame(clientIndex). Note that RED = 2 and BLU = 3. Unknown/Spectator are 0/1. I like doing achievements (not grinding or using plugins and such, working towards them) to get the weapons, the big scout/heavy/medic/pyro/etc boom only lasts a few days and everything goes back to normal, plus an extra scout or two per team for the next few weeks, not that terrible. I agree that having the new weapons available right away does make sense. Less grinding is better, and the overload of one class would end sooner. Not to mention that new players would no longer be alienated by not having all the different weapons to try out right away. Although that's just my opinion. I use HLSW to admin my server from the outside. If you add the rcon password in and click on get get log {internet} it will begin to show you who is on what team, if they are spectaiting or not. Sometimes you will see a blank spot in a space. [hlds] Moving on
As we have all seen the Achievements locked to weapons is a bit divisive in the community. I personally would like to see a split from this to you get the weapons straight out plus you have a nice amount of achievements that actually mean something other than Ive got to get these to get those weapons. I play DODS this game has 50 or so achievements that are not tied to weapons, imho its more fun and means more to get these achievements. Takes less of the pressure off to be able to compete with every one else. If we moved away from the unlockables and to just achievements and weapons, we would also kill the farming servers, the "unlocker", moronic plugins, and would also cut down on all 1 class all the time as seen in every previous update. I feel that now is the right time to have a serious discussion on the matter in light of F7 clans honey pot plugin and the drama its caused. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds

Re: [hlds] Achievement Farmer Honeypot
This is supposed to be a list about how to admin servers. msleeper's post about his plugin is valid as it serves to admin servers in a way. Likewise, discussion about how some feel about it is valid as a response. Continuing this discussion in the vein of trashing people and clans should stop, as it serves no purpose here. Sometimes the forum portion would be nice because you could lock an out of control thread. -Original Message- From: Blood Letter [mailto:bw_bloodlet...@hotmail.com] Sent: Friday, February 27, 2009 1:12 PM To: hlds@list.valvesoftware.com Subject: Re: [hlds] Achievement Farmer Honeypot Read some of the stuff there... Re: [hlds] Achievement Farmer Honeypot
Yeah, I think some of us here have come to the conclusion that this whole thing might a tad bit of an overreaction. I don't think we need to grind that back and forth any longer. And I agree with 100% with Patrick that this kind of list is something that should be kept primarily private. I don't see anything wrong with releasing it to those who ask for it but I hate to think of someone importing a list of people banned for 'farming' by a careless admin thinking it's a list of hackers or something of that nature (which is exactly the first thing going through my head on first reading the original post). I know you feel strongly that achievement servers are 'cheating', but your opinions aren't really relevant here, not more than any other contributors. It's a gray area, I don't think you seem to realize that. And this really isn't the list to be promoting server-side plugins other than ones created primarily to fix bugs/exploits/crashes, etc. Major NuT wrote: > I took some time to digest this whole HoneyPot on Cheese (achievements) for > the Scout that msleeper of F7lans has thrust upon the TF2 Game. Re: [hlds] Scout cant double jump since latest update
Plugin or not, I'd like to get back to the original logic msleeper used to create that plugin, and that is that farming is cheating. Which I disagree with, and feel that argument shouldn't be the basis for why people (admins) use the plugin. It's just rediculous. -Matt ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds
Re: [hlds] Achievement Farmer Honeypot
Another annoying thing about this is that the ban list he creates can and might possibly be spread around. God knows i'm the first the admit i dont read everything properly (Scout cant double jump thread!) - so some other admins might just see that the list is a general cheaters list and add them to their ban list. If his goal was to police his own F7lan clan or whatever its called, then keep the list private just for that. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds
[hlds] Achievement Farmer Honeypot
I took some time to digest this whole HoneyPot on Cheese (achievements) for the Scout that msleeper of F7lans has thrust upon the TF2 Game. Many of you have responded directly to msleeper for his logic (or illogic) behind his methods of creating such a venue and some to his defense. That venue being to put up a sign that says, Come on in and get your Cheese!! We have all kinds for your palette!! (X duration passes. BANNED for 30 Days) - my personal POV of it msleeper, sorry. I do have an issue with how this was pitched by msleeper and I think it’s where most of the other server admins root offense to msleeper is derived. The fact is that msleeper’s description of the plugin on various sites has the wording “ACHIEVEMENT FARMERS, BE WARNED! SERVER ADMINS ARE FIGHTING BACK!” and “TAKE BACK TEAM FORTRESS!” (This one is on Steam forums, but I have seen them similarly elsewhere). Again, msleeper’s reasoning is because he believes or his “opinion” is that Cheese farming is “cheating”. This is what I gather is the foundation for the plugin. Two things come out of this with respect to the majority of the server admins here: 1) …Server Admins are fighting back snippet implies every server admin is doing this, when in fact that is so far from reality or common sense, and 2) How msleeper qualifies cheese farming in his view to be cheating. I’m not here to say what other people should or should not be doing. I give credit to msleeper’s poorly executed joke early on of citing his HoneyPot as a Chris Hansen operation. Damn dude, cheese farming is SO like breaking the law. For me that was just distasteful b/c it gave a sense that you were being noble in some way. I also give credit in that some people see this topic differently though (eg, I hate farmer altogether, BAN them, I like to farm in certain ways, or who the eff cares, etc.). We all have our Communities, created by whatever means we (server admins) chose. The problem here is not cheese itself, nor Valve, nor the players. The problem, even with all the stipulations msleeper delineated, is the idea or notion that other Server Admins are doing this also (ie. Server Admins are Fighting Back, etc.). This was my interpretation of msleeper’s announcement. Maybe some of you felt the same or other. I personally do not associate myself to this as I chose to be proactive with my Community and just password the server. This allowed our Community to play TF2 “normally” or “typically” the way we play without random players. No cheese map at all. If ppl want to farm, then they can try, but they were told not to expect not getting killed or w/e due to others choosing to play typically. Just sharing what the [FLASH] venue is during this Scout Update. Finally, every issue in life, especially polarizing ones, requires some sort of qualification, basis, justification, etc. This also means that assumptions even need the same. Standing behind “…its just my opinion” just does not cut it when its in the same sentence or words of some righteous act for server admins abound. Ahhh, hell…this is a puter game!!
