[hlds] New crash exploit

2009-07-09 Thread Nephyrin Zey
Sometime early this morning this fellow:
http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198005902725
crashed one of my servers and bragged about it, since his buddy:
http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197995252712
was banned for speedhacking. He rejoined, presumably to crash the server
again, and was instantly banned for connecting as 'unconnected'.

Log files just end, no crash dump. I was asleep, so i didn't get a
chance to check the console. I've turned on much more logging and
console dumping, so if it happens again i'll track it down. If anyone
knows of this exploit, send me a email and i can work on a block plugin.

It was not the rcon exploit, i have a block in place for that.

The second guy you mention was already banned on my servers for some kind of
exploit that freezed one of my servers.

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit

2009-07-09 Thread 1nsane
I had this. Also I'm getting complaints of some "lag exploit" on one of my
servers.

I know it's not caused by a plugin since I disabled the plugins and it's not
caused by the network issues as 3 other servers on that box are fine.

Here's a graph from HLSW while it happens:

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit

2009-07-09 Thread Spencer 'voogru' MacDonald
I just experienced an attack from "94.113.20.11", this address is from Czech
Republic, I had wireshark open during the attack and confirmed the packet
said "Hi".

I dove through my player database and didn't have an exact IP match, but
Czech players on my server are quite rare and there was a player that
connected 1 time and played for a total of 1 minute, 40 seconds with the IP
address of "94.113.13.240", both of these being the same ISP.

The SteamID that is tied with the 94.113.13.240 IP is "STEAM_0:0:22769399"
(76561198005804526)

Just a heads up.

<3 player database.

[hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-19 Thread Justin
I don't know how its happening, but my windows tf2 server keeps crashing
after a player with a blank name joins.
The crash happens instantly after the player connects and logs of the ip are
not made; I don't know what this player has against us but he's really
trying my patience

[hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-20 Thread Winston Doan

Hello.

I'm emailing you today because of a cracked server for your game, Team Fortress
2. It isn't anything bad, far from, I just wanted to say that I would like to
thank you for allowing someone who can't really afford the game just yet to be
able to play it. Yes, I know, I can't afford a game for $20 with tax. But with
the economy of Canada and the USA failing, along with my family hitting some
hard times, most of my paycheck goes to paying bills, and the rest of it goes
to paying for groceries.

The server I was playing on, Pwndora's Box, was a cracked one, allowing people
without the actual game, to test your game out and play it. It gave me a chance
to just kick back and forget the issues at hand and play with some good people.

Though due to the possible crash exploit, that is no longer viable for me to do
anymore, seeing as the server had to go down due to the constant crashing of
some random occurance of someone or something logging on and taking down the
server. It is due to this, and the fact that I have become far to used to
playing your games, I shall be saving up all the money I can spare over the
next month in order to buy your game.

Sincerely
Winston Doan

2008-12-19 Thread Spencer 'voogru' MacDonald
I was trying to figure out what was going on here.

I noticed that you didn't mention your server so I went ahead and googled your
alias (mysteriousjustin) to see if I could find out what your server IP may be.

I found comments you seem to have wrote on this page:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJqbr4eV-Eg
(How to use Unlocked Weapons in TF2 with NoSteam *Not Gamestat.txt Trick*
[UPDATE NOV 12])

Someone with the name "mysteriousjustin" just so happened to write a comment in
this TF2 related video.

Mysterious indeed!

Your YouTube profile I suspect (http://www.youtube.com/user/mysteriousjustin)
also has some TF2 videos as favorites so from this point on, I will assume it
is your profile.

I also found this:

"(1 week ago by mysteriousjustin) Come play TF2 cracked @ 66.135.40.26:27015"
(Source:
http://xn--nxaglql2a.tk/video/tbZGfPv6TYA/crack-steampacsteampacsteamt.html)

I found the same thing in another youtube video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_8ej30Xftg

"mysteriousjustin (3 weeks ago) Show Hide -3 Marked as spam Reply Come play
TF2 cracked @ 66.135.40.26:27015
The only english/usa cracked tf2 server."

I decided that I would connect to the server to investigate, I couldn't help
but notice that I had an illegal (and impossible) STEAM ID.

# 40 "[NSHB]243" STEAM_0:0:18903256 09:42 98 0 active

Reading the website in the MOTD of this server I found a forum
(http://pwndorasbox.net/fourm/), and someone with the name "mystery" just so
happens to have the same exact problem as you, just today to boot!

They have a thread discussing this very issue:
http://pwndorasbox.net/fourm/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=30&sid=6ff91a53dd20622c6ef01e7c94b7f9ef

I think I'm finished here.

So, with all of that said, I think you should probably stop running a pirate
server. As that very well could be the cause of your problems. I have
screenshotted everything FYI, so if you try to cover it all up, it won't work.

Pirates are not eligible for support I don't think.

Happy 15th birthday, ask your parents to buy you a legal copy of TF2, it's only
$9.99 now. They'll be thrilled.

Mystery solved, thanks to Google!

Have a nice day!

- Spencer

Yes, but you must apply a crack to break the authentication if you wish to
allow people with pirated clients to connect to the server.

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-19 Thread Spencer 'voogru' MacDonald
Yes, it does. It's also possible for legitimate accounts to connect to it.

In order to 100% be sure it's pirate (because I would normally have a STEAM
ID), I have log on to steam in another location. Connecting to a legitimate
server knocks you off with "Steam account already in use in another
location", where as a pirate server will accept the connection and hit you
up with a fake STEAM ID.

Which will be either,

Steam_Id_Cracked
STEAM_0:0:0
STEAM_666:88:666 (or something in that form)
Or possibly in the future, an ID that may not be your real STEAM ID.

I had to confirm it with his server before I said anything, even though all
of his posts on the internet's were pretty incriminating.

How did it get derailed? The problem with the server was that it is
pandering to filthy pirates who don't want to pay ten measly American
dollars for an excellent game. Problem solved.

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-19 Thread 1nsane
I believe a bunch of us banned you for using those server crashing cvar
exploits a while ago.

Infact didn't Nephyrin or someone else make a thread about it here too?
Funny you'd ask for our help now. Get off my mailing list, fattie (the last
part is confirmed).

Yeah well its funny how you had cracked servers a while ago(wheres your slap
on the wrist?)
honestly stop being a player whore and remove your packet manipulation
plugin or take it off your server altogether.

Personally I think supporting pirates is worse than spoofing player

Both could be used to do the same thing and that's to get traffic onto a

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-19 Thread Kitteny Berk
Just to clarify myself a little;

Cracked servers are always going to be a touchy subject among gamers and
admins.

Personally, I'm not *completely* against running /*private*/ cracked
servers, I ran one for CoD4 for 2 weeks at release for my community, the
result was that 25 people from my community who wouldn't have bought the
game ended up buying it. (I know some people here will be against this,
but the only affect it had on anyone was more sales as people had got to
love the game bought it) and that was a one off for my community, as
the uptake was slow for such a fun game. net result? 25 more sales for
activision.

What you're doing, advertising yourself as "The only english/usa cracked
tf2 server." does nothing but encourage piracy, and I suspect cheating
to some degree, which is bad for players and bad for valve.

You're giving nothing back to valve, it's unlikely you've caused more
sales by advertising your server as you have, and now you're lashing out
at others who seem to run legit servers.

2008-12-19 Thread Kitteny Berk
But in advertising your cracked server to the public, and keeping it
cracked (well over a year after release) that strikes me more like
you're running cracked servers and condoning piracy.

Haha, he's banned from most servers so he has to run his own shitty server
and I guess no one wants to play with him.

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-20 Thread Justin
Actually im not banned from most "servers" i really don't consider them
servers,
And I have a lot of people who want to play with me and the crashing servers
shit was to make valve fix the damn exploit after it was happening to my
server in may-march(don't remember when)
But being banned is the least of my worries, I got plenty of non big box
servers to play on that arent whores(like is1337 or lotus which is your
shitty servers)

The guy has a point

There are alot of things that aren't right in the world like the price of
software, piracy, microsoft's idiocy, valve not caring about server admins,
the price of tea in China. but we don't need to add to it by being
abusive.

A crazy idea for everyone in this particular topic:

Shut up.

The rest of us really don't care about this stupid back and forth that
apparently has no end. So on behalf of everyone else on this list, everyone
needs to just drop it and move on.

But guys stop harassing him, he does what he chooses to do, if that is
illegal then on his shoulders it is. Not ours. Don't get involved.

But in advertising your cracked server to the public, and keeping it
cracked (well over a year after release) that strikes me more like
you're running cracked servers and condoning piracy.

I agree with this. Let's keep this off the list. There are far more direct
ways of ... amusement.

Yeah I've played on his server a long time, and I've been admin in it as
well, and he's a pretty nice kid. He's never shown any regards to keeping
the server cracked all the time, we talked about uncracking on pretty often,
but feared we would lose most of our members in the process, and would have
to take it down due to the member quota set by the server hoster, and that's
why we had it cracked, due to the low amounts of activity on the server when
it was non-cracked.

That may or may not be fair enough, depending on how an individual weighs
the morality. But surely you can see why he's never going to get any help
from the official list, and why believing that he would is grounds for an
amount of ridicule?

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-20 Thread Siddhartha Gandhi
I want to say that anyone suggesting that cracking your server does not push
people to buy the legit version of the game is ridiculous.

Let me tell you the story of myself, and over 200 other TF2 players. Back in
the months January - June a cracked server called Onan's Disciples was
started. It turned out to be one of the biggest American servers, having a
consistent 32 players for much of the day. When the server was shut down and
replaced by a legit server, almost all of us bought the game on Steam. Just
about everyone who was a regular on that server now owns the game legit, and
the vast majority of them originated as pirates.

That server achieved two things:

a) People bought the game who, if they hadn't gotten the cracked version of
the game, probably wouldn't have.

b) It created a community that lasted even when the server went legit.

Sure, that server allowed people to illegally play the game, some of whom
never went out and bought it (more often than not, because they didn't have
the ability to buy it), but if that server did not exist, would the ones who
did buy it have bought the game? The answer is no.

I'm not justifying piracy, I don't think anyone is, but before you censure
this man consider that piracy doesn't always lead to lost sales.

Really, if you can't afford that, you have serious issues that go beyond
your country failing, mine is too, but $20 isn't exactly a killer.

That's cheaper bog roll and a few bottles of store brand soda for a few
weeks.

You think this would work if I went to EMI and asked to pirate their music
because I couldn't afford it. NO. Stop being lame. If you cant afford it
then don't play it, you don't deserve it!
You don't also think valve is feeling the pressure of the economy? If
everyone stopped buying games but still play them then valve won't last for
very long.

But to come on here asking for a fix for something you didn't pay for
are you crazy or has the world gone mad.

Why not just use the multiple free weekends that valve gives you to try the

I'm not going to deny that there are some people like that. But taken in the
context from things, no, that's not the case. About half of the people
switched to legit after the server went legit, the other half bought the

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-20 Thread Karl Weckstrom
Software Piracy is exactly like Masturbation.

Everybody does it, but no one wants to admit it. And people love to ridicule
those who admit it, even though it's something all of you are doing regularly.

Welcome to the internet - where masturbaters and software pirates are its 2
biggest audiences, with online gaming being a VERY distant 3rd.

Move on.

Alright, I don't even believe this that nobody on here has even pirated
software for any reason. I'm sure most of you have pirated something and
still have it on your computer, honestly shut up about costing valve money
because they get a lot of money just because of noob hackers who think they
can bypass VAC.
Im tired of the dictatorship that valve has become.

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-20 Thread Steve Stifler
Look, he broke the rules... He broke the law It seems to be human
nature and 99% of us do it in one form or another. He ran a cracked server
and promoted software piracy. For the rest of us it could be speeding,
running a stop light or lifting something from work. We can get away with it
so we do it. Get over it and move on. This thread is going nowhere and
harassing him (also against the law) will get us nowhere.

Please, stop the posts and the thread...

Re: [hlds] New crash exploit?(TF2)

2008-12-21 Thread Arg!
To say that there are people who do not pirate at all is a complete fallacy.
There are those among us who decide to actually pay for the software we
decide to use.
