Re: [hlds] New inexplicable rate restriction making 26x+ servers laggy.

2009-02-02 Thread ERIK OLSEN
I can also confirm that all of our 32 player servers have not been hit by
lag that was non-existent before. My players (about half of which are paying
customers) are understandably upset, and my in-box is being hammered with
complaints about TF2 server performance since the update. I should note that
we run very high-end hardware, with one 2.6 Ghz core and 2GB of memory
dedicated to each TF2 instance, and never saw any server-side lag prior to
this patch. In addition, our sv_maxrate has always been set to 3.

Couple that with the fact that the intermittent timeout on map change bug
still rears it's ugly head several times per day, AND we've been hit by the
DDOS exploit/attack (until a community member came up with a fix), and I
have to wonder exactly what WAS fixed in the last patch?

Honeslty, why keep on working on new content, when there are so many
game-breaking bugs that need to be addressed? I hate to see the performance
of everyone's TF2 servers once they are getting hammered with even more
traffic by achievement-seekers if the Scout update is released without
fixing these glaring problems with the underlying game engine.

I'm really sorry about clogging the list with irrelevant message but I
need a bit of help from my fellow admins.

Here is my problem - I'm looking for a places to ask technical
questions about dedicated servers of the following games: BF2, BF2142,

Should you know these please let me know. I would be really grateful

I uncapped the rate on all my TF2 servers and all is well (it seems to have a
ceiling of 3). The lag issues are gone, so it seems this works as a
workaround.

set sv_maxrate 0

I want to confirm that this patch has caused my 31-player servers to
exhibit lag/warping players. All players can see the effects and are
(understandably) very angry about it. net_graph 3 confirms frequent
high choke values (40-60) when they're typically 0 prior to the patch.
FWIW, my sv_maxrate was 3 before the patch and performance was
fine.

Doesn't change anything. Rate is still limited on the client to 30,000. You
see this when you query the value by typing rate in the player console.

Ya, at least one of my servers had sv_maxrate 3 and it was better
 before
the patch. It seems like in addition to making a max rate, they also
 botched
 something else up.

I want to confirm that this patch has caused my 31-player servers to
exhibit lag/warping players. All players can see the effects and are
(understandably) very angry about it. net_graph 3 confirms frequent
high choke values (40-60) when they're typically 0 prior to the patch.
FWIW, my sv_maxrate was 3 before the patch and performance was
 fine.

Please address this issue (and the timeout bug, and the team change bug)!

It is a error with sv_minrate not sv_maxrate, upon setting sv_minrate 0
you can set your client rate to anything you want (but also not force a
minrate), sv_maxrate will still limit the max value to whatever you have
set.
