Thanks to Bobby's help we believe we have tracked down this problem, a
fix will be included in the next update. For the technically minded
amongst you it was caused by a precision problem in a float time counter
(after a day or two of operation the exponent of the float got large
enough to loose the precision we need).

Re: [hlds] 1000fps bug in SRCDS still exists

2005-03-22 Thread Peter Lawyer
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
It seems to me that my server (HL2TDM) would run for approximately four days
and the server will drop out for two reasons. First my server runs on a cable
modem that has its bandwidth change throughout the day and if the bandwidth is
poor at any given time this will accelerate the degradation. Second, I run a
newbie server, so alot of the time I have players that have high ping rates.
This also degrades the server quickly. In fact the server has degraded so
quickly that I have, on occasion, had to reboot in less than a full day. I run
a TFC server on the same box and generally it is unaffected, however, it does
rob some of the bandwidth and might cause accelerated degradation on the Source
server. Also I like custom maps and some of then have terrible frame rates,
this seems to have some influence too. The server is a 2800 AMD Athlon with 1.5
gig, Win 2k. The only other program beside the OS is TFC and HL2 Client. If I
play HL2DM, the server FPS will bottom out quickly if its full
and players have high ping rates ( so I don't play under those conditions). I
have Admins running HLSW (both servers) from England, Calgary and L.A. on my
Washington DC server, 24 Hours. My bandwidth is about 6.5/7.5 meg down and 700k
up on a high average. HL2TDM=12 Players/TFC=14 Players. Source:sv_maxrate
"7500" sv_maxupdaterate "15" sv_minrate "3500" sv_minupdaterate "15" This is
very reproducable and I won't go beyond two days on average without resetting
the servers to avoid this problem. AOL Smells.

Add "-BudgetPanel" to the command line and you can see a nice breakdown of
exactly how much time the server is spending in each sub system. Note that this

The Windows/Linux (happens on both, have had Linux drop to 32/16 fps, I think
Windows was 32) framerate halving bug is easily reproducable, you just leave a
server for a few days without restarting it. Pretty sure I can sort out a
server to be not restarted for a few days if you need to help isolate it.

Add -tickrate 100 in the startuprow, the server works mutch better with it.

RE: [hlds] 1000fps bug in SRCDS still exists

2005-03-21 Thread Alfred Reynolds
If you can send me a way to reproduce the problem (i.e running an idle
server for a few days) then we can look into it. I haven't heard this
one before. We are hunting down a frame rate halving bug (still no
reproduction case for this however, so if you find one mail me).

So is there any plan to fix this annoying bug? After a source server
runs for several days, eventually the FPS will climb to 1000 and lock
there. You can still ping the server, but it's very slow, usually about
3-4 times higher than normal. I don't think you can join it. It's tough
to monitor for this kind of thing since it's still running.

This is on Win2k3, running HL2MP, though I saw it with CS:S too.
